Tumblr media
Born into a family of parlementaires (members of Paris's Parlement), Marie de Cotteblanche was the daughter of Guy de Cotteblanche, a lawyer at the Paris Parlement, and Catherine Hesselin, whom he married in 1517. Her older brother Elie accumulated many honors, becoming a gentleman of the Chambre du Roi in 1571 and knight of the Order of Saint Michel in 1578. Marie had a sister Marguerite, as we learn from the cosmographer François de Belleforest's dedication to them of his pastoral poem, Chasse d'Amour (Love's Hunt, 1560). The bibliographer La Croix du Maine notes that she was a "Damoiselle Parisienne, très docte en Philosophie et Mathématiques" (Damoiselle Parisienne, very learned in philosophy and mathematics).
Marie de Cotteblanche was also adept at languages. Her only extant work, Trois dialogues de M. Pierre Messie, touchant la nature du Soleil, de la Terre, et de toutes les choses qui se font et apparoissent en l'air (Three Dialogues by M. Pierre Messie, concerning the nature of the sun, the earth, and all things that happen and appear in the air), a French translation of three Spanish dialogues by the cosmographer Pedro Mexia (or Mejia, Pierre Messie in French, 1497-1551), was published in 1566 and reissued some twenty-nine times between 1566 and 1643, either independently, in Claude Grujet's translation of Messie's Diverses Leçons, or in an anonymous translation of the complete dialogues of Pierre Messie.
Cotteblanche bases her translation on both the original Spanish version (either the 1547 or 1548 editions) and an Italian rendition by Alfonso d'Ulloa published in Venice in 1557. In her numerous marginal annotations, Cotteblanche compares the Spanish and Italian versions, opting sometimes for the one or the other or sometimes coming up with her own formulations. In her dedicatory letter to her friend and patron, Marguerite de Saluces, maréchale de Termes, she thanks the latter for having taught her Italian. She states her knowledge of only Italian, a privileged language at court and among a select group of translators who were state secretaries, writers, and lawyers. Marie de Cotteblanche combines her knowledge of languages with her interest in the sciences. Of the six dialogues by Messie, she retains only the three that concern geophysical and cosmological topics (the sun, the earth, and the meteors). Her choice of a scientific subject matter was not an unusual one for a woman of the elite class. Many learned women of the nobility and upper gentry were well read in the sciences. Catherine de Médicis, for instance, was interested in astronomy and the natural sciences, Marguerite de Valois and Diane de Poitiers in medical treatises, and Catherine de Clermont, maréchale de Retz, in philosophy and mathematics.
Cotteblanche's choice of the dialogue form, a favorite humanist genre, appealed to a wide readership eager to expand its learning. In her preface, she states her great love for books ("seuls m'ont faict fidèle compaignie" [they alone have been my faithful companions]), study and learning. She was also commited to writing. She viewed her translation as a stylistic exercise, a first attempt to produce a work that would eventually lead to another publication reflecting her own creativity. No other work by her has been published.

Advice/hard truths for writers?
The best piece of practical advice I know is a classic from Hemingway (qtd. here):
The most important thing I’ve learned about writing is never write too much at a time… Never pump yourself dry. Leave a little for the next day. The main thing is to know when to stop. Don’t wait till you’ve written yourself out. When you’re still going good and you come to an interesting place and you know what’s going to happen next, that’s the time to stop. Then leave it alone and don’t think about it; let your subconscious mind do the work.
Also, especially if you're young, you should read more than you write. If you're serious about writing, you'll want to write more than you read when you get old; you need, then, to lay the important books as your foundation early. I like this passage from Samuel R. Delany's "Some Advice for the Intermediate and Advanced Creative Writing Student" (collected in both Shorter Views and About Writing):
You need to read Balzac, Stendhal, Flaubert, and Zola; you need to read Austen, Thackeray, the Brontes, Dickens, George Eliot, and Hardy; you need to read Hawthorne, Melville, James, Woolf, Joyce, and Faulkner; you need to read Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, Turgenev, Goncherov, Gogol, Bely, Khlebnikov, and Flaubert; you need to read Stephen Crane, Mark Twain, Edward Dahlberg, John Steinbeck, Jean Rhys, Glenway Wescott, John O'Hara, James Gould Cozzens, Angus Wilson, Patrick White, Alexander Trocchi, Iris Murdoch, Graham Greene, Evelyn Waugh, Anthony Powell, Vladimir Nabokov; you need to read Nella Larsen, Knut Hamsun, Edwin Demby, Saul Bellow, Lawrence Durrell, John Updike, John Barth, Philip Roth, Coleman Dowell, William Gaddis, William Gass, Marguerite Young, Thomas Pynchon, Paul West, Bertha Harris, Melvin Dixon, Daryll Pinckney, Darryl Ponicsan, and John Keene, Jr.; you need to read Thomas M. Disch, Joanna Russ, Richard Powers, Carroll Maso, Edmund White, Jayne Ann Phillips, Robert Gluck, and Julian Barnes—you need to read them and a whole lot more; you need to read them not so that you will know what they have written about, but so that you can begin to absorb some of the more ambitious models for what the novel can be.
Note: I haven't read every single writer on that list; there are even three I've literally never heard of; I can think of others I'd recommend in place of some he's cited; but still, his general point—that you need to read the major and minor classics—is correct.
The best piece of general advice I know, and not only about writing, comes from Dr. Johnson, The Rambler #63:
The traveller that resolutely follows a rough and winding path, will sooner reach the end of his journey, than he that is always changing his direction, and wastes the hours of day-light in looking for smoother ground and shorter passages.
I've known too many young writers over the years who sabotaged themselves by overthinking and therefore never finishing or sharing their projects; this stems, I assume, from a lack of self-trust or, more grandly, trust in the universe (the Muses, God, etc.). But what professors always tell Ph.D. students about dissertations is also true of novels, stories, poems, plays, comic books, screenplays, etc: There are only two kinds of dissertations—finished and unfinished. Relatedly, this is the age of online—an age when 20th-century institutions are collapsing, and 21st-century ones have not yet been invented. Unless you have serious connections in New York or Iowa, publish your work yourself and don't bother with the gatekeepers.
Other than the above, I find most writing advice useless because over-generalized or else stemming from arbitrary culture-specific or field-specific biases, e.g., Orwell's extremely English and extremely journalistic strictures, not necessarily germane to the non-English or non-journalistic writer. "Don't use adverbs," they always say. Why the hell shouldn't I? It's absurd. "Show, don't tell," they insist. Fine for the aforementioned Orwell and Hemingway, but irrelevant to Edith Wharton and Thomas Mann. Freytag's Pyramid? Spare me. Every new book is a leap in the dark. Your project may be singular; you may need to make your own map as your traverse the unexplored territory.
Hard truths? There's one. I know it's a hard truth because I hesitate even to type it. It will insult our faith in egalitarianism and the rewards of earnest labor. And yet, I suspect the hard truth is this: ineffables like inspiration and genius count for a lot. If they didn't, if application were all it took, then everybody would write works of genius all day long. But even the greatest geniuses usually only got the gift of one or two all-time great work. This doesn't have to be a counsel of despair, though: you can always try to place yourself wherever you think lightning is likeliest to strike. That's what I do, anyway. Good luck!

(Equestrian portrait of Madame de Saint-Baslemont, by Claude Deruet, 1646)
Alberte-Barbe d'Ernécourt, Dame de Saint-Baslemont - The amazon of Lorraine
Alberte-Barbe (1607-1660) was the eldest daughter of a distinguished family from Lorraine. This region between France and Germany is now part of France, but was at that time an independent duchy. Intelligent, robust and athletic, Alberte-Barbe was also generous and concerned with the well-being of the people who lived on her family estates.
In 1624, she married Jean-Jacques de Haraucourt, lord of Saint-Baslemont. The pair rode on horseback and hunted together. Of their children, only a daughter survived to adulthood. The couple would soon be parted as the Thirty Years’ War raged in Europe. Jean-Jacques left to join the Duke of Lorraine who was fighting against the French. It appears that Alberte-Barbe had sympathies for the French crown, as she sometimes gave safe passage to French troops. She nonetheless respected and supported her husband’s choice and paid his ransom twice when he was made prisoner.
Alberte-Barbe busied herself with defending her territories at the head of a small, but well trained militia. She led from the front, sword in hand and was often found fighting hand-to-hand with her enemies. She fought against French and enemy soldiers as well as marauding brigands, preventing them from pillaging her lands. Her first victory took place in 1636 when she defeated a band of 100 French cavalrymen trying to drive off her cattle herd.
She fought for eight years and her biographer states that she was never wounded or defeated. She also reportedly challenged a military officer who caused troubles on her lands to a duel and defeated him. The man thought he was fighting against “the knight of Saint-Baslemont” and was ashamed and astonished when Alberte-Barbe revealed her real identity before leaving. Her military reputation was so impressive that many refugees came to her lands.
Alberte-Barbe was nonetheless merciful and spared those who surrendered, she also offered medical care to the wounded, friends or foes alike. This benevolence could be observed in other aspects of her life, for instance, she established a weekly “soup kitchen” that fed 200 hundred people, often served by Alberte-Barbe in person. She gave dowries to young women and clothing to young men entering the monastery and cared for the sick.
She was also a very religious woman and attended the mass daily. Alberte-Barbe was also a playwright and wrote a religious tragedy title The twin martyrs and published in 1650. After her husband’s death in 1644, she refused to remarry. She died in 1660.

La Stasi s'installe à Paris
Mon cher lecteur,

21 Most Delicious Ways to Enjoy Healthy Greens
Healthy greens—like dark leafy greens—get a lot of hype in health world.
Your mom told you to eat your broccoli. Green juices and green smoothies are essentials for any juice cleanse. And Popeye the Sailor Man made spinach cool.
But have you ever wondered, “Why are greens so good for me anyway?” After all, you hear they are—but what are the facts?!
Here are 7 Reasons Why Greens are Good for You, plus 21 Delicious Ways to Get Your Greens On (Beyond Salads).
7 Reasons Why Healthy Greens Are Good for You
1. Healthy Greens Aid in Digestion
Fiber in vegetables give your digestion a “boost,” aiding in the process of “pushing food through” your digestive tract. Imagine fiber as the “car” that helps carry your proteins and healthy fats down the road of digestion.
Dark leafy greens contain more insoluble fiber, similar to other vegetables, including carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and Brussels sprouts. Insoluble fiber promotes the movement of material through your digestive system and increases stool bulk, so it can be of benefit to those who struggle with constipation or irregular stools.
2. Greens Promote Healthy Gut Bacteria
Fiber is not only essential for pushing food through your digestive tract. Fiber also promotes healthy gut bacteria. Although soluble fibers (like cooked & cooled potatoes, white rice, plantains and squashes) are the best “prebiotic” fibers (i.e. they feed healthy gut bacteria), insoluble fibers (found in leafy greens) increase gut transit rate and consequently reduce the amount of time available for (unhealthy) colonic bacterial fermentation of non-digested foodstuff (1). Dark leafy greens also promote the formation of short chain fatty acids (aka: “post-biotics”). Short chain fatty acids are the “byproducts” formed from well-fed gut bacteria that help produce MORE healthy gut bacteria.
3. Healthy Greens Strengthen Immunity
Dark leafy greens and other green veggies — from asparagus to broccoli — are crucial for a well-functioning immune system. Green veggies ensure that first-line-of-defense immune cells in the gut and the skin [known as intra-epithelial lymphocytes (IELs)] fire properly. One study of healthy mice that were deprived of green veggies two to three weeks, found that 70 to 80 percent of these protective cells disappeared (2). The conclusion? More greens could mean less illness, autoimmunity, allergies and skin breakouts.
4. Greens Make You Stronger
Popeye was on to something when he told us spinach was good for us—dark leafy healthy greens, like spinach, can help boost fitness naturally. One study (3) on healthy people who ate a small dose of spinach for three days found significantly improved endurance and performance while riding an exercise bike, concluding that it increased efficiency of the mitochondria that powered their cells.
Another study (4) compared the muscle functions of mice who drank nitrates (a component found in spinach) in their drinking water to that of a control group, finding a striking difference in the force production of their fast-twitch muscles (power muscles).
5. Boost Brainpower
A diet containing approximately one serving of green leafy vegetables per day is associated with slower age-related cognitive decline. In a study (5) of 960 older adults, researchers looked at the association between performance on cognitive tests and dark leafy vegetables. Over the course of 5 years, the participants underwent 5 annual checkups with tests that assessed cognition in five domains (episodic memory, working memory, semantic memory, visuospatial ability, and perceptual speed). Data about nutrient intake was also considered—particularly attention to dark healthy greens.
Findings revealed that consumption of green leafy vegetables was positively and significantly associated with slower cognitive decline. Participants who ate greens regularly (1-2 times per day) were up to 11 years younger cognitively, based on average global cognitive scores over time. In addition, there was no evidence that the association was affected by cardiovascular conditions, depressive symptoms, low weight, or obesity. Another study of kids, ages 8-10, found that the kids with higher levels of lutein in their brains performed significantly better. Lutein is a brain-boosting nutrient found in dark leafy healthy greens (6).
6. Prevent Heart Disease
Several studies have found a decrease in heart disease among individuals who consume dark leafy greens on a regular basis. One study (7) of over 40,000 participants, ages 20-70 found those that ate vegetables daily—particularly dark leafy greens—had significantly less oxidative damage, reduced inflammation, better blood sugar control, healthy lipoprotein (cholesterol) markers and even less risk of cardiometabolic disease than those who didn’t eat veggies regularly—regardless of smoking or living alone (two other factors that play a role heart disease).
7. Healthy Greens Help Detox the Body
Your liver is your body’s largest single organ. It converts nutrients from foods into forms your body can use; helps digest fat; stores carbs; and produces bile (waste) to send out of your body. (In other words: Your liver does alot!). Unfortunately, if your liver gets stressed from things like unhealthy foods, longterm medicine use, environmental toxins and tap water, it is unable to work as efficiently.
Enter: Dark healthy greens. Plants are an essential part of the human diet and contain various antioxidants which are closely related to liver health—including enzymes, glutathione, Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, resins (help form bile acids) and 4-Hydroxynonenal (cell signals and liver metabolism). Dark leafy greens are no exception, and their antioxidants are essential to a healthy functioning liver (your body’s detoxification powerhouses).
