An Altar is a Physical Manifestation Of Your Inner Spirituality

Perhaps it’s the gentle fragrance of sandalwood incense lingering in the air, mingling with the soft glow of candlelight, that deepens your sense of tranquility. Maybe it’s the smiling Buddha statue or the carved wall sculptures of…
I don’t know about you, but I am certainly charmed by this antique statue of Buddha, created in Laos ca 1920-40. I adore how the patina is different from front to back of the figure, with the front showing that at the most recent point in its history, its been painted a green color, while showing some traces of lacquer and gold leaf over wood. The back of the figure is painted in rich tones of pink and saffron yellow. The Buddha has such character, and I’m imaging him perched somewhere where you could see him from all sides (you do you, though). The Buddha is seated in the "Calling Earth to Witness the Defeat of Evil" Posture. With fingers slightly touching the ground, this position represents the Subduing of Mara the Evil One. One of two full-size ancient Greek bronzes discovered in 1972 off the western coast of Calabria in southern Italy. The statue, cast circa 460-450 BC, stands 198 cm (78 in) tall. The lips and nipples are made of copper, the teeth are silver and the eyes formed from calcite. At one time this bronze warrior held a spear and shield, but they were never found. The figure may also have worn a wreath around his head. ( Photography by Luigi Spina. )
