it is once again wip wednesday—well, most places; time is a construct anyhow, right? and as we know (which is to say: no one but my wife knows), thursday mornings are always moderately unpleasant for me, so i am once again here. posting.
so uh. set at end of episode 13, a sequel to the one fic i've actually posted properly.
'Fang Xiaobao,' says Li Lianhua, ‘let me take care of you.’
Fang Duobing makes a soft, dismissive noise, but it sounds more out of exhaustion than anything else. Li Lianhua settles behind him on the bed and strokes his shoulders, digging his thumbs into muscles he knows must ache. Di Feisheng hadn't gone easy, and for Fang Duobing to have evaded him as long as he did—
Li Lianhua wonders when his failures will stop hurting the people he should be protecting. He'd been slow to join them outside, hesitant to show himself when he was still visibly injured and trusting too well that Di Feisheng, whatever he might think of Li Lianhua, wouldn't harm Fang Duobing.
Even now, he can’t stop himself seeing it when he closes his eyes: Fang Duobing kneeling between Di Feisheng’s thighs, his head tipped back against Di Feisheng's shoulder. Di Feisheng's thumb drawing circles of Fang Duobing's sternum, offering him the tenderness that he’s so clearly desperate for. As if comforting him. It seems wrong that Di Feisheng should have been the one to offer whatever comfort Fang Duobing might have found in this room.
Li Lianhua can be tender. He can be tender for this man. Li Lianhua is no one's brother, no one’s son, no one's father, no one's shifu. He is nothing of this world, but he can be tender for the man he remembers, the man Li Xiangyi’s failures have deprived Fang Duobing of.
The debts he can’t hope to repay only ever mount.

I needed to kill some time tonight so I watched Tales from the Hood (1995) since it’s currently free on Tubi and, dang, was it right up my ally. It’s campy. It’s serious. It’s Gothic. It’s modern. It was perfect to watch as Halloween looms around the corner.
Now, this movie might not be everyone’s cup of tea. It deals with some very serious topics like racism, police brutality, drug abuse, domestic violence, & gang violence. Lots of foul language as well. Also, there is a prolonged strobe effect starting around 1:24:00 (when Crazy K is put in the sensory deprivation chamber). Lastly, while I thought the practical effects were rather good, the effects done by computer are more, let’s say, par for the 90’s.
With all that out of the way, if you can stomach it this movie is really fun. It’s a frame story and an anthology with a twist ending. The combination of modern & classic styles really sells the film in my opinion. The soundtrack utilizes both spooky classical music along with gangsta rap to set the mood. The visuals are a mix of typical American urban and suburban environments & Gothic tropes like funeral homes, cemeteries with undead, possessed vintage dolls, or laboratory-asylum-dungeons. Blood and gore is present, but not egregiously so. It’s more the kind of horror movie that pulls you in with its thrills or leaves you with something to think about after the plots are resolved than the kind that relies on the disgust factor to get a reaction from its audience. Overall, 10/10 would watch again.
