The wildflowers are blooming and the sun is shining, so let’s hop in the 4x4 and explore the superbloom across the Anza Borrego desert and mountains! I’m so grateful to share such a beautiful day in the low and high desert surrounded by blooming desert sages, chuparosas, blazing star sand verbenas, fiddlenecks, sacred dulturas, and so many more. The desert mountain botanicals are just on another level this season after just the right mix of rain and sun over the winter.

Hadruridae

Hadrurus arizonensis 

Dark crescent shape that goes across the median eyes

Body can be light or dark

Found in the southwest between Arizona, Nevada, California, and the southwestern tip of Utah

Hadrurus spadix

Whole body and prosoma uniformly dark

Found in the West from Nevada, into southern Idaho and southeastern Oregon, and in California and Arizona

Hadrurus anzaborrego 

Lighter triangle shaped coloration that goes from the front of the prosoma to the median eyes

Found in Southern California

Hadrurus obscurus

Front of the prosoma slightly lighter, makes an almost bracket shape 

Last tergite on the metasoma might also have light coloration on it

Found in Southern California

Hadrurus arizonensis, showing a dark and pale form.

Hadrurus spadix, note the solid black prosoma. 

Hadrurus anzaborrego, note the distinct triangle shaped mark. 

Hadrurus obscurus, has more variation but will have a more square or bracket shaped light mark and the last tergite might have lighter markings.

Blasting across the desert at high speeds is one thing the KTM 1290 Super Adventure R does well. But it’s also a great cruiser when you want to slow down to check out the scenery. During a recent trip out to the Anza Borrego Desert for the Adventure Rally & Camp, a must-stop destination in the area was Salvation Mountain and Slab City. Weird desert art doesn't get much weirder than this. Salvation Mountain was the brainchild of the late Leonard Knight, a self-proclaimed sinner who wanted to spread the word of God through a colorful paper mache mountain he created. Next door, Slab City is an unincorporated, off-the-grid community of squatters living together in harmony. Ready to check out of your daily grind? This is where you go. And don't forget to stop at East Jesus for some additional entertaining weirdness. It rivals Salvation Mountain for intrigue and you can spend several hours walking around soaking in all the different art displays. If your travels take you anywhere near the South Eastern part of the state, it's definitely worth a detour! Having GPS or knowing your trails and staying on then when driving at night is important. Especially when you wake up and see you’re on the safe side of this sign in picture two.😂 From a solo night drive a while back linking up with friends that departed at separate times and out of reach from cell and radio communication due to the area.
