Ayakashi Koi Meguri/Ayakashi Romance Reborn production behind the scenes (part 7)
(click here for full series of Behind the Scenes posts)
Ten Night of Dreams gacha
It’s Obon season in Japan, so they ran this gacha with an ethereal vibe to the the illustrations, themed after Natsume Souseki’s “Ten Nights of Dreams” short stories. Akiyasu is themed after the second night, Touichirou after the eighth, and Aoi after the tenth. You can read summaries of the stories on Wikipedia. Not sure if the full body of work are available in English, but the Japanese versions are free to read.
Behind the cut are character Behind the Scenes for Yura, Gaku, and Ouji. If you have not read their routes, proceed with caution.
I wondered why they grouped these three, and they writer said because they’re the “Retiree/elderly citizens squad” LOL...
Yura
Yura and Gaku were spawned from the idea that “we should make twins” and “we want to have this character that looks like a child but is actually old inside”. In the end the only one who is grandpa-ish is Yura, LOL. Ouji doesn’t act THAT old and Gaku is just your average youngster. The staff gave Yura that Ye Olde Speake so that he’d seem more “old fashioned” rather than “grandad”. Maybe because that’d have been weird for the readers (not sure if this would’ve been translatable to English, but there’s this way of talking in Japanese that is considered “old man speak”)
Yura’s route involve a lot of inner struggle, because Yura has made up his mind about something that the MC cannot dissuade him against.
The writer says that on a meta level, they kind of want to convey to the readers that sometimes you don’t have to confront your problems. It’s fine to turn to escapism/run away from the trouble (as long as it’s not leading into something even more harmful). Even though Yura faced his curse and came out of it happy, you don’t have to force yourself to do the same.
Gaku
Gaku’s character is that while he’s all "big brother supremacy”, but he has a completely different attitude. So in opposite of the old-fashioned Yura, Gaku is very up to date with the current age. Since they wanted Gaku to be a “genius”, originally they thought of making Gaku a famous writer, but changed it to a mechanic because they felt Gaku has more of a scientific-leaning profession.
Gaku has this very dependable image, almost like he’s the big brother, but when it comes to Yura he turns into mush LOL.
His effort to break Yura’s curse for 1000 years is a difficult task, and how tough that whole thing is seems to be a bit hard to convey properly in writing. Like, that’s an unimaginable amount of time for us and all. Gaku never gave up, and that’s “really cool”.
The writer mentions the Wish Upon a Star(?) event (it’s the event we recently had in Eng, I forgot the name) and says that conveys a lot about Gaku and Yura’s relationship. The two has such opposite attitude even towards the curse (Yura gave up breaking it, Gaku doesn’t want to give up no matter what). But they have interconnected stories, so the writer hopes that you’d read both of them.
Ouji
They weren’t initially sure how old to make Ouji be, LOL. He was also initially designed to have a womanizer vibes (so maybe like Ikesen Shingen, if you play it?), but it was toned down into more of an “everyone likes him” sort of character.
In the JP profile it was clearly written that he still have lingering feelings about someone in the past (this part was removed from the Eng profile), so the writer acknowledged that this might be a hurdle for those who more or less self inserts into the MC.
Ouji’s age is like Up There beyond normal, but it’s more approachable than the etherealness that is Yura and Gaku’s 1000 years. So Ouji’s attitude is more of a typical “age gap/generation gap” type stories, and the MC will slowly learn to understand and approach this barrier better.
There is an interesting event in November (will come to Eng November 2021) that kind of handles this difference in mindset. Ouji has a relaxed “maybe someday” attitude, that the writer feels is typical of older people, while the MC has a more “if we don’t do this now we might miss the chance”, an attitudes more typical to younger people. And it’s all about seeing both perspectives and meeting in the middle and stuff.
This event formally reveals in canon that the cafe's name (in Japanese) is Lien because it’s the French word for “bonds”. Not sure why Eng renames it something different. Maybe "Raccord” is more grammatically correct in French?
