Apollo 15 was the first Apollo mission to carry a rover and it had rather intense geological training for the astronauts prior to launch. As part of the effort to characterize the site's geology, the first step the astronauts planned was a "Stand up EVA" where they depressurized the Lunar Module and astronaut Dave Scott stuck his head out the top to describe the morphology of the surrounding landscape. Using data collected by the high-resolution Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera, NASA released this video recreating his view of the Hadley Rille landscape and stand up view.

I’ve been listening to Apollo 13 in real time, and it is both less and more dramatic than the film.

Collage of my NASA Apollo technician costume references & in-progress shots, and final. Put this together last year for the 50th anniversary. I used a white jumpsuit / coveralls I had (left over from a previous costume).
Managed to get a similar but not exact headset & converted it as best I could. Washed it (it reeked of cigarette smoke), took it apart, washed it, repainted it, reassembled it. Made some labels for it in Adobe Illustrator. Bought a white surgical scrubs cap and added a vintage NASA patch (from eBay). Used inkjet printer fabric to make my own Apollo ‘mission patch’ & NASA chest patch. Scavenged a big NASA back patch from a cheapie drawstring backpack (not shown). Recreated the area permit & employee ID using reference photos & images of actual IDs. Bought some period ID tag clips from eBay (not necessary, but I’m proud of that attention to detail). Got a short sleeved white dress shirt & a vintage tie. Took a lot of work & research, and I’m very pleased with this costume.

A few weeks ago, I resolved that I’d finally shoot the far-out sign for Apollo Liquors in Austin, Minnesota, and that I’d post it on the 50th anniversary of the lunar landing, which is today. As you can see, both have happened, and I’m happy for it! I actually built a four-state, four-day odyssey around ensuring I shot this. When I arrived the night before I photographed this, it was raining, the neon sign was turned off and the liquor store clerk suggested I return in the morning, which I planned to do, anyway. By dawn, the clouds had lifted and we had severe-clear blue skies, perfect conditions to shoot a sign of such beauty. The store, which grew into a chain, was the brainchild of Nick Kolas, a Greek immigrant who founded the store in the aftermath of the Apollo 11 mission in 1969. The Apollo name honors the historic lunar landing and Kola’s Greek heritage. Beautiful right? The manager who was on duty on the Saturday morning I visited shared some of the history, and even gifted me with an Apollo Liquors T-shirt, which I’ll post on my Instagram story if you want to check it out. Apollo Liquors -- for 50 years, a bucket-list beauty in the Land of 1,000 Lakes. #retrologist #apollo11 #apollo50 (at Apollo Liquor) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0JVO2EllDw/?igshid=18jrvz0cyy5wp

The Eagle has landed: the Apollo 11 50th Anniversary
By Vincent Bartholomew | Pieces of History
From July 3, 2019 through August 7, 2019, a special featured document display relating to the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11 Moon Landing is in the East Rotunda Gallery of the National Archives Building in Washington, DC.
July 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission. On July 20, 1969, Commander Neil Armstrong and Astronaut Buzz Aldrin landed the Apollo lunar module, Eagle, and spent the next 21.5 hours on the lunar surface, while Command Module Pilot Michael Collins orbited the Moon.
Approximately seven hours after Eagle touched down on the lunar surface, Armstrong became the first human to step onto the Moon. The moment was forever memorialized by Armstrong’s words: “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” This marked the Apollo 11 mission as the single greatest moment of human space exploration.
