the app?
to get updates on the city's campaign against poor people??
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“We’re again rushing to penalize people who are just trying to survive on the streets,” said [J.C.], an attorney with the Oregon Justice Resource Center. [...] “We don’t have the adequate infrastructure to house and protect people in a safe manner,” [J.C.] said. “And yet we are passing a law that could lead to excessive punishment when truly there aren’t enough options for people.” [...] Violators can be punished with a fine of up to $100, up to seven days in jail or both. “If you are really, really poor, $100 might as well be $100,000,” [S.K.] said. [...] The new policy is already in effect. The mayor said notifications will be sent out [via a new app] so everyone knows the rules as it is enforced.

The Portland City Council passed a new version of an outdoor camping ban Wednesday morning, capping off weeks of fiery debate, particularly between Mayor Ted Wheeler and Commissioner [R.G.], about how aggressively the city can police encampments without running into the same kind of court challenge that halted the original ban last year. [...] [T]he council vote was unanimous [...]. The new ban passed as an emergency ordinance, allowing it to take effect immediately rather than after the usual 30 days. In a news release, Wheeler's office said enforcement will begin in the coming weeks [...]. "We do fear [...]," said [L.A.] with Sisters of the Road, a social justice nonprofit in Old Town. "We are hoping that we actually return to actual root causes solutions like lowering rents in Portland," said Armony. [...] Violators can be punished with a fine of up to $100, up to 7 days in jail, or both [...]. "When it comes to fining people in poverty, all that does is deepen their poverty," said [S.K.] [...] of Blanchet House, a nonprofit that helps care for people living on the streets. "A $100 fine to the people we serve might as well be a $100,000." [...] Wheeler said new technology is in the works to help organize efforts around the ordinance. "All of this is going to be tracked using an app that was developed by my team," [Mayor] Wheeler said on Wednesday. [...] The council enacted the original daytime camping ban in June of last year, [...] but homeless Portlanders challenged the ban in court and a Multnomah County Circuit Court judge placed an indefinite hold [...]. Wheeler introduced his new proposed version last month, which he said was designed to withstand a court challenge [...].

Life update! This is going to be a looooong post! Lots of things have changed!
So about a year ago, ***** and I broke up (I'm keeping his name out of this). It was a long time coming but ultimately it was what we both needed. Everything fell apart. We were polyamorous for the majority of our relationship - but we were bad at it. I hated it for a long time before I finally became more comfortable. When I did feel more comfortable, ***** felt more insecure and closed us off again, with the intention of opening things back up later. But basically, I fucked up and caused the breakup.
I met someone, Marek, and developed feelings quickly. I fell for them hard and told ***** how I felt. ***** forbade me from talking to Marek, but I continued to indirectly talk to them through posts I made about them on the app we met on. I would post about them, they would post about me, and eventually, ***** found the posts and ended the relationship.
I was devastated at first and was overwhelmed by the guilt. Losing the person I was with for over 8 years was awful. But then I started to process the things that happened over the course of that relationship and realized it was beyond unhealthy for both of us. Neither of us were fully to blame for that toxicity. We fed off each other. The relationship was deeply codependent and had so many issues that honestly, it should have ended years before it did. But the codependency kept us together. It was bad.
BUT!!!!
Tumblr media
Now life is amazing! Marek and I started actually dating and they are beyond a doubt the best thing that's ever happened to me. The relationship is healthy. Everything feels good and I am deeply in love. We communicate well, our interests and desires in life align, I feel safe with them and never doubt their love for me. They are perfection in human form. I've never met anyone I vibe with so well, genuinely. We will have been together for a year on September 1st! (。💚▽🩷。)
Since the breakup, my mental health has improved significantly! I feel joy these days! I am far more stable, my confidence has improved drastically, I have finally met myself, I'm healing my inner child, and I'm far more independent than I ever have been. Marek supports me and makes me feel like I can do anything. I fully believe I was being held back by my last relationship because of the previously mentioned codependency. I wish ***** the best, but I'm happy we aren't together anymore. We both deserve better than what we got from each other.
Some smaller things than a massive relationship change:
I now live in a geodesic dome
I have become completely and utterly OBSESSED with Kirby
My hair is green
My sense of fashion has become super maximalist and colorful
I have control over my eating disorder and I'm finally at a healthy weight
I went to Scotland
I have made friends in the Portland area
I was officially diagnosed with borderline personality disorder which has made therapy far more effective for me
I have fallen deeper into my hobbies
I have a massive plant collection now. 57 plants to be precise.
SO MANY GOOD THINGS.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall, life has been really, really good in the past year. I'm truly happy now. I never thought I'd get to this point, but here I am! I'm thriving!
(ノ⊙ヮ⊙)ノ*:・゚✧
Tumblr media
My happiness shines through and I am so grateful. (~ ̄▽ ̄)~
Also here are some (not all) of my plants!!

Published: May 7, 2024
Want to know how Woke activists take over buildings, smash windows, trash university campuses, and still have the press call them "non-violent"?
Well, as it turns out these are well trained activists using intelligent, highly developed tactics. Here's a primer:
Tumblr media
First off: none of this is spontaneous.
IE: The protestors in the video going around have shields. (pic 1)
In 2020 we learned these shields can take hours to make and are made by volunteers working all day. You don't do that spontaneously. It takes planning. (pics 2 +3)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's a thread on the shields used during the 2020 Portland protests. They are well built and are distributed to those wishing to engage in "direct action" (AKA violence and vandalism).
Not all shields are built like this, but this is typical:
Tumblr media
Another clue that this is all VERY well planned is the fact they tend to all have the same tent.
This is because the organizations that run and fund the protests purchase the tents in bulk and then give them to the protestors as needed.
Again, It is all VERY well planned.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Further, these are NOT "student protests."
Lisa Fithian is a 63 year old professional protestor, not a student. She's planned protests for decades.
According to the NYPD 1/3 of the people arrested at Columbia, and most of the people arrested at the CCNY, were not students
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now we need to understand the TACTICS that are being used here.
The first strategy is to put their target in a "decision dilemma." This is where they select a method of protest that leaves the person with no good options. No matter how the target reacts they look bad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As John Searle explained in his 1971 book "The Campus War," the strategy is to leave the University with no good options:
Tumblr media
They either let the protestors take over, or call police and then students play victim and use the optics to look like sympathetic martyrs for the cause.
The decision dilemma strategy is paired with: "the real action is your targets reaction." You use someone's reactions to your protest against them.
IE: Taking over a building. If the police arrest you, you film it and play the martyr. If they don't, you control the building
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Those two strategies are used hand in hand to create actions which activists can turn to their advantage.
When they do this correctly they can paint themselves as the sympathetic powerless underdogs even when they are the aggressors.
It's social and political jiu-jitsu  This is performative, but not in "look good to your peers" kind of way.
The principle is "play to the audience that isn't there." Activists protesters want to LOOK good to the people on Youtube or watching the news.
It's the OPTICS that matter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Please pay careful attention to this:
Activists want to LOOK like they are trying to change the minds of people they protest against, but that's just for show. They see their targets unrepentant evil doers that are just props in the drama they are staging.
This is awful.
Tumblr media
The point of the protest is not to change the mind of the people whose building they have taken over, the goal is to use the protest as a way of building social and political pressure against the people they are trying to make give it.
THAT is the goal.
This next strategy is self-explanatory: "do the media's work for them."
This is where activists find press releases and film footage that make them look good get into the hands of sympathetic journalists. This explains a lot of what gets on TV
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So how do they do all this and still get sympathetic coverage?
The strategy is: "lead with sympathetic characters." It's EXACTLY what it sounds like. They put sympathetic people out front to garner sympathy and create the APPEARANCE of underdogs fighting against the powerful.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is why in the coverage of these protests you rarely see the images of smashed glass, trashed buildings, broken doors, and blood on the street, but you will often see pictures of the people below which are meant to make the protestors look sympathetic.
Tumblr media
The protestors have a highly developed theory of protest optics. They understand videos can be sliced and diced to tell any story, and the story that "resonates" with people most, wins. So they are intentional in trying to create moments on video that can go viral...
That isn't to say they aren't also intentional in doing damage. They are. The book Black Bloc, White Riot: Anti-Globalization and the Genealogy of Dissent by author AK Thompson is the starting place for their theory of what counts as violence, and when violence is justified.
Here is Alex Hundert writing is rabble defending "a diversity of tactics" which is a euphemism for allowing violence at protests. Hundert explicitly states a commitment to non-violence is "dogmatic" and "stifles debate" about which tactics to use.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So the violence and vandalism at these protests is intentional. Where the elderly protestor is meant to win hearts, the black bloc is there to intimidate. If police react to the violence with arrests protestors claim the police "attacked students."
See how the game works?
The point is that none of these protests are happening spontaneously.
These are well planned protests, using high level tactics that are given to people supported by a well organized protest infrastructure (where did you think the tents and shields came from?)
These radical protestors have organized an infrastructure to, in their words, disrupt, dismantle, and deconstruct your society.
I don't want to scare any of you, I just want you to know what's happening because you can't push back against what you don't understand.
Every single one of these protests operates according to a set of methodologies, principles and tactics and theories that have been created with the specific goal of allowing the radicals to gain social and political victories by creating and controlling the narrative.
As @realchrisrufo points out, the conflict at Harvard is reaching a "decision point," but Harvard can't end the conflict without looking bad and damaging their own reputation.
This is the result of activist tactics applied perfectly against Harvard.
Tumblr media
Do not underestimate the ability of radical leftist protestors to win the narrative battle, particularly since we have a media complex sympathetic to leftist causes.
The goal here is not to scare you, but to show you what's going on under the hood of these protests....
Beating woke activists means understanding their tactics are so you can anticipate them and respond in a way that is effective. If universities had anticipated the Activist tactic "occupation" They would have known the goal was to put them in a "decision dillemma" (pic 2)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the activists will explicitly tell us that these occupations are "well planned" (that's why I keep using that phrase" and that they want to expose the "power holders" (in this case universities) inability to enforce the rules. That's literally the whole point...
Tumblr media
Had universities known this they would have understood that the right move is to eject the encampments the minute they start. There was not way to negotiate with the protestors because, as the activists themselves tell us, negotiating is not the point. The point is to create a situation where the University has no good option and expose the university as weak, and then use that to extract concessions and make the university fold because they have ZERO good options.
Knowing that this is the strategy allows you avoid the trap by taking the PR hit and ejecting the protestors and tearing down the encampments on day 1. You're taking a PR hit no matter what, so take the hit day 1 and then ride it out. The longer the protests last, the bigger a story they become, so end it quick and kill the momentum.
Instead universities did not know the tactics, thought they could reason with the protestors or negotiate in good faith, and now they are in exactly the bind that @realchrisrufo lays out here:
Tumblr media
Learn how the woke activists operate, learn how their tactics function, and learn how to respond accordingly when they seek to impose their will on you using these tactics.
Thanks for reading.

Honestly, this seems pretty freaking obvious. Hamas can't defeat Israel by firepower; the way they win is by fighting the propaganda war and manipulating the rest of the world into fighting against Israel instead.
Still, it doesn't matter how much you quote their own words, there's still certain people who will say right to you that it isn't true, it's not happening.

Owing Taxes
Last night’s low reached 38 degrees, and the high today made it to 51. There’ was rain off and on during the rest of the afternoon.
My blood sugar this morning was back in a good range, at 151. I opted for hot coffee this morning, hoping to provide some relief for all the pains I was feeling. When we finished our brain games, we fixed oatmeal for breakfast.
Because we had gotten up so early, we took a short nap before Nancy had to leave for her hair appointment. When she got home from the appointment, we went by the drugstore to return the wrong lancets they provided me. Later, I discovered the replacements were also the wrong kind. I’ll return them soon.
We stopped at the credit union to get some cash, but the drive-thru ATM was being serviced, so we went on without extra money.
Our next stop was Market of Choice. At the top of our list was oatmeal, raisins and walnuts for our breakfast. We also picked up a couple of soups, a couple of soaps, a bottle of pinot gris for Nancy, and another item or two.
Then we went to Natural Grocers, back down Coburg Road, to get cough syrup for the cough I have developed over the last day or two.
Finally, we went to pick up our taxes. This year we owe the Feds $306 and get back a little bit from both Oregon and Arizona. The prep cost was $260. That’s more than we spent in Tucson, but, as we have discovered, many things are more expensive here in Oregon. Even without sales tax.
Once we got home, I called Henry to let him know that I did not feel well enough to go to the men’s recovery meeting tonight. Then Nancy and I took another nap.
When I went to wake up the desktop, it would not respond, so I plugged in the touch pad and discovered that the Bluetooth had turned itself off. I had to reboot the desktop, the second time in as many days. I did already look into a new model, and with the storage and memory I want, it will cost me $2,800. And we’ll have to go up near Portland to buy one. I could have it delivered, I suppose, though that’s not something I really want to arrange.
Once I got it booted up and went to check the latest on FB, I found several more fake accounts trying to “friend” me. There are a lot more of these lately. I’m also getting a bunch of fake emails with attachments that likely contain malware. Luckily, I have become familiar with a lot of the internet scam attempts.
We had cheesy eggs, leftover bacon and toast for dinner. The eggs came from the dozen we bought from Carrie over the weekend.
Then I went out for a walk around the neighborhood. Nancy opted out. I did 1.36 miles in 30:22 minutes, for a total of 3,400 steps. It started to drizzle lightly when I reached Thurston, though it did not feel terribly cold, even while the weather app said it was 47 degrees. It’s nice to have an extra hour of daylight to do a walk after dinner.
Our evening streaming consisted of the third episode of “Blackshore,” which ended with the reveal of the murderer in the primary case. There are three more episodes, and they will appear one per week, each Monday. We followed that with the final case in “Helsinki Crimes,” part of “Walter Presents” on PBS. There is a second series, but it is not available on PBS at this point.
Tonight’s low is forecast to be 37 degrees, with tomorrow’s high at 52. It looks like the rain will be delayed until about 5 p.m., although there was rain today when none appeared on the forecast. That is often the case here in Oregon, we think.

Custom Software and App Development | Germinate
Tumblr media
Mobile and web applications have become essential for businesses looking to streamline their operations, engage with customers, and increase revenue. Whether you're a startup in Portland, a growing enterprise in Eugene, or an established organization in Bend, custom app development Oregon can be the key to driving your business forward. A well-designed, custom-built app tailored to your business needs can give you a competitive edge, improve customer satisfaction, and boost your overall efficiency.
In this blog post, we’ll dive into why custom app development is an essential investment for Oregon businesses and how you can leverage this technology to achieve long-term success.
What is Custom App Development?
Custom app development involves creating a software application specifically designed to meet the unique needs and requirements of your business. Unlike off-the-shelf apps that are designed for the mass market, custom apps are tailored to your specific workflows, user experience, and business goals. Whether you’re looking to build a mobile app for your customers or a web-based application for internal use, custom development ensures that the final product serves your precise business objectives.
Why Custom App Development in Oregon?
Oregon is home to a thriving tech community, with a robust ecosystem of talented developers, designers, and tech companies ready to help bring your app vision to life. Here’s why custom app development in Oregon can be the right choice for your business:
Personalized Solutions for Unique Needs: Off-the-shelf apps may not fully address the unique challenges your business faces. Custom app development allows you to create a solution tailored to your specific requirements, ensuring that the app enhances your business operations rather than forcing you to adapt to a pre-designed solution. Whether it's integrating with your existing systems, automating tasks, or offering specific features to your customers, a custom app can provide a highly personalized solution.
Scalability and Flexibility: As your business grows, your app needs to evolve too. Custom apps are designed with scalability in mind, so as your user base increases or your business expands into new markets, your app can adapt to accommodate these changes. Custom development ensures your app can grow with your business without facing limitations or restrictions, unlike off-the-shelf solutions that might require costly upgrades or replacements.
Competitive Advantage: In a crowded market, standing out from the competition is crucial. Custom-built apps can differentiate your business by offering unique features or functionalities that your competitors may not have. By developing an app that’s specifically tailored to your brand and customers, you can create a stronger connection with your audience and improve their experience with your business.
Local Expertise and Collaboration: Oregon is home to a wealth of skilled app developers and tech professionals who understand the local business landscape. By choosing a custom app development Oregon, you can tap into local talent that understands the regional market, consumer behavior, and business trends. Working with a local developer also allows for more effective collaboration, ensuring that your vision for the app is accurately brought to life.
Integration with Existing Systems: One of the main advantages of custom app development is the ability to integrate the app seamlessly with your existing systems, whether they be customer relationship management (CRM) tools, accounting software, or other back-end processes. This integration ensures a smooth user experience, improves workflow efficiency, and eliminates the need for manual data entry.
The Custom App Development Process in Oregon
Building a custom app is a collaborative process that involves several key stages. Here’s an overview of what you can expect during the development process:
Initial Consultation and Requirement Gathering: The first step in custom app development is understanding your business needs. During this phase, you’ll work with the development team to discuss the app’s goals, target audience, desired features, and functionality. This is the foundation of the project, as it ensures that the app is designed to meet your business objectives.
App Design and User Experience (UX): Once the requirements are clear, the design phase begins. This is where the user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design come into play. A well-designed app should be intuitive, easy to navigate, and visually appealing. Your development team will create wireframes and prototypes to give you an idea of what the app will look like and how users will interact with it.
App Development and Coding: With the design in place, the development team begins the coding process. This involves building the app’s back-end and front-end functionality. During this phase, developers write the code that brings the app’s features to life, ensuring it works smoothly across different devices and platforms (iOS, Android, Web).
Testing and Quality Assurance: Once the app is developed, it undergoes a rigorous testing phase. The QA team tests the app to ensure it’s free from bugs, performs well under different conditions, and meets all the requirements set forth in the initial consultation. The testing phase is crucial to ensure that the app is reliable and ready for launch.
Launch and Deployment: After successful testing, the app is launched to the public or deployed within your organization. This phase includes uploading the app to app stores (for mobile apps) or hosting it on a web server (for web apps). The launch phase also includes setting up any necessary support systems, such as customer service channels or app updates.
Post-Launch Support and Maintenance: Custom apps require ongoing support and maintenance to ensure they continue to function smoothly. This includes fixing any bugs, implementing updates, and adding new features as needed. A good app development company will offer post-launch support to ensure that your app stays up-to-date and continues to meet your business needs.
Why Choose Custom App Development Over Off-the-Shelf Solutions?

Validated Shark Tank Update - Validated Net Worth 2025 - Validated was an application designed to address parking and travel expenses for city consumers. It assisted individuals in saving money when they purchased items from shops. This concept also aided stores in attracting customers again. The app was developed by Ian Lyman, Tov Arneson, and Alex Wilhelm. They requested $250,000 in return for 8% ownership of their business.  The application functioned in two locations Seattle and Portland. It collaborated with nearby shops and eateries. Customers would gain travel credits when they made purchases at these locations. Nevertheless, the sharks failed to recognize its potential. They thought of the application. Will the entrepreneur get a deal on Shark Tank? Check out the Validated update to find out!   Validated net worth 2025 Ian Lyma...

Diversions #7: Additional progress
Wow, so much has happened since #6. Where do I begin? Should I try to recap my travels to Portland or to Atlanta for WordCamp or FinCon? Should I summarize all of the progress we’ve made on the addition to our home? Should I write about my recent upgrade to an M4 MacBook Pro? Or, do I focus on the updates that have come to the ActivityPub plugin that has me rethinking how I use my personal website (yet again)?
How about all of it?!
I’ve posted a few photos from Portland, though I have many more photos that I’ve taken on film that I just haven’t developed yet. This weekend I went to do exactly that and hit a roadblock. It would help if I had fresh chemicals around!
I’ve also commented on what happened at WordCamp and wrote some key takeaways from FinCon. So I won’t rehash any of that.
Instead, I’ll focus on the reminder that traveling (in general) and going to events has a positive impact on your outlook, your network, and your business. Not all of them can be directly measured or are reflected on the bottom row a spreadsheet – but you can feel them as you move forward. You may face a challenge and end up thinking of a company or person you met at an event that can help. In short; go to events.
The addition is moving along quickly now. This sort of project seems to be one where the beginning parts; planning, drawing, documenting, etc. are the slow parts. Then, once the work begins, it is difficult to keep up with.
Working from home affords me the ability to jog outside once or twice a day to snap a photo or two of the progress. I’m very happy that I’m not the one doing the work this time.
Tumblr media
The foundation and floor base
I know snags are inevitable. In fact, the forecast at the end of this week already looks like it will slow down progress some. But that is how these sorts of things go.
The new lighter, faster 14″ M4 Pro MacBook Pro is really a delight to use. I hit a snag or two when upgrading the software that was Intel-only to their Apple Silicon counterparts (especially Adobe) but other than just a few hiccups — the upgrade/migration process is so easy.
My previous MacBook Pro was no slouch but this one is a screamer. Building projects, running local LLMs, or just having literally every single app open doesn’t seem to phase it. Using it as a laptop, something I was never able to do with my previous computer, is also really fun. I can actually get a lot of work done and the battery life is great!
My last bit of equipment upgrading is going to be a Thunderbolt dock and at least one external SSD. I need my port situation to be a bit cleaner and I’m hoping a dock will free me up to just have a single wire running into the laptop. And, as of today, I’m not backing up using Time Machine so I cannot delay getting a new SSD.
The social media landscape is a mess! Part of me loves the messiness. It is an interesting time and lots of people are experimenting with many things. New platforms, new ideas, new ways of sharing. Gone are the days of only one or two social networks thriving.
But another part of me is frustrated. I don’t really know what I want to do with my personal blog as it relates to the social web. I have the ActivityPub plugin installed, and it works well to distribute my posts onto the fediverse as a first class citizen. But it isn’t (and likely never will be) perfect.
If you’re at all interested in your website joining the fediverse, I recommend giving the plugin a try and learning how it works. This isn’t cross-posting. It makes your website “an ActivityPub endpoint” so that the account is your website (and/or its authors). It is very cool and interesting.
The reason the ActivityPub plugin has me rethinking my personal blog use, is that I can begin to see a future where all of my favorites, boosts, quote posts, etc. live here on my website – rather than my Mastodon account. But for that I’d want to restructure my site’s design a bit (and likely my RSS feed). Of course, if I explore this at all I’ll write about it.
Regardless of how this phase of the social web shakes out I know I’ll be publishing here on my blog.
An edition of Diversions wouldn’t be complete without some links:
Christoph Rauscher’s newsletter – I like how Christoph publishes his newsletter. Lovely.
Live at Delia’s Third Happening – Site Nonsite live album recording.
Tumblr media
Vault – By Commercial Type.
Rex Brasher Field Notes – Lovely little film about Brasher’s work as well.
Rachel Binx’s website – Go take a look.
Apple Pay Plates – This is me buying Crocs or fanny packs.
