What's the deal with the GB/GBA Emulator Leak?

On April 18th 2022 on 4chan's /vp/ board, 3 links have been posted:

0100d870045b6000_dev.nsp: A NSP file containing a NES Nintendo Switch Online build.

hiyoko_unsorted.7z: Various builds of a Game Boy / Color Emulator for the Switch in seperated NCA files.

01008bf00a1c8000.nsp: A NSP file containing a Game Boy Advance Emulator for the Switch.

No additional context has been given other than four screenshots of the GBA emulator.

All of the files are signed for Switch development kits, meaning that they have to be resigned to work on a retail unit.

All of these things were developed by NERD (Nintendo European Research & Development), responsible for many things, but are more recently known for their emulation work since the Nintendo DS Virtual Console emulator on Wii U.

I'll try to explain what each of these things are seperately, and why I think they are legitimate.

NES Nintendo Switch Online

The first link in the post links to a build of NES Nintendo Switch Online app dated October 4th 2019. This would be a month since the release of SNES Nintendo Switch Online, and when the monthly updates of additional NES games would have stopped.

It contains all of the games in order of Switch release until August 21st, 2019, then continues with the games that would be released on December 12th and later, and quite a few that have yet to be released, if ever.

Noteworthy unreleased games include the entirety of the Mega Man series, each including their own Special Versions, Castlevania 1 & 2, Adventure Island, Galaga, Pac Man, Kung Fu, Lode Runner, Tetris, and a few more.

All of them are playable, some even including multi language descriptions. There isn't that much more to say about it, it is really just the usual user interface, but with more games.

Technically, anyone can add more games to this, people have done this before. All of these games have unique identifications too, someone could just take the information we have of these IDs, and somewhat appear legitimate if you include nice scans of box arts.

However this would mean someone took the time to write unique descriptions in multiple languages, too, and when you include the rest of the leaked files, there's I think more reasons for its legitimacy.

Hiyoko - GB/C Emulator

Hiyoko is a name that we have seen since the NES Nintendo Switch Online 2.0.0 update, dated December 2018. It had accidental inclusion of SNES game descriptions, which news sites have also covered at the time. Other people have also noticed a couple names as well, part of an emulator type enumeration which I will list:

Canoe is known since the SNES Classic Mini as the SNES emulator, Kachikachi is also known since the NES Classic Mini as the NES emulator. Then there's the mention of Hiyoko, and Count.

Count is nothing more than for keeping count of how many emulator types there are, this is pretty standard practice, we can safely say this is not the name of an emulator.

But Hiyoko was an emulator name we haven't heard of before, and lots of speculation arose on what it could be, if it was a Game Boy emulator, a Nintendo 64 emulator, and so on.

Eventually the N64 Nintendo Switch Online app would exist, and takes on the name "Hovercraft". Then we also had rumors of a Game Boy NSO service coming from several reliable people, which could have suggested that Hiyoko could be the GB/C emulator. Turns out that was it.

The archive contains 15 different title IDs, for a total of 23 builds of Hiyoko, each a different standlone app including its own ROM. Only the following games were used:

Super Mario Land

Tetris

Qix

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX

Most of the builds are just optimized builds, and 3 of them are debug builds including pretty much every information necessary for debugging, which also gives us precious information about its development. Those debug builds can't seem to be used at the moment because of a corrupted SDK file? There's also a bunch of weirdness to the files, many Meta and Program NCAs, but an odd amount of Control NCA files…

The version of one of them seems to be v0.0.20190306.dev. When pulling out the third value, the code specifically seperates 2019 03 06, so there's our potential build date here.

So this Game Boy Color emulator has quite a lot of features, and I will try to be clear about them:

Emulates different types of Game Boy screens, like the original Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, and Game Boy Color, including the screen ghosting effect.

Emulates the Game Boy Advance's GBC Mode, which certain GBC games can detect and unlock features.

Emulates MBC7 partially, the Memory Bank Controller famously used for Kirby Tilt 'n Tumble. The GBC emulator on 3DS Virtual Console would not even boot this game. The tilt sensor and the save is not emulated, but the base code is solid for more.

Supports emulating two Game Boy / Color systems locally with link cable support, enabling local multiplayer on the same system.

Supports rollback with prediction multiplayer netplay.

Supports asymmetric netplay. (I don't know exactly what that means.)

What this essentially means is that NERD seems to be making a pretty robust emulator, the builds we have are a bit buggy, but shows real potential for a better emulator than previously made. The naming also suggests this emulator was made from scratch.

The debug build shows a lot of the way it is programmed, and I have very little doubt in my mind that this is real, this does not correspond to any emulator you could find online.

While I could only try on Yuzu, the Nintendo Switch emulator, which means I won't necessarily have the best performance to play, the emulator seems really legit at first glance.

Sloop - GBA Emulator

Sloop is an odd one. The naming would definitely confuse most people who doesn't know it is a real english word for a type of boat (It did for me). This isn't the only emulator from NERD with this kind of name, I think Canoe, the SNES emulator and Hovercraft, the N64 emulator. Both of them are actually based on other emulators, specifically the Wii U Virtual Console ones which came from other developers than NERD.

The emulator contains a menu made with Dear ImGui, an open source IMGUI library, and used as industry standard for quick debug menu implementations. The menu is seperated into several groups:

Single-player games (1P)

Multi-player scenarios (2P)

ROM patches (monitor bugs)

Image Filters

Selected features

Accuracy testing samples

Clearly, this is meant to be a showcase of features, possibly to higher ups for judging or a proposal of sorts. It supports the following features:

Gamma Change: Lowers the gamma of the screen to alleviate the very bright colors intended for the original GBA screen with no backlight.

LCD Persistence Emulation: Emulates the slight ghosting of the GBA screen, some games actually uses this for certain effects like transparency or anti-aliasing.

ROM Patching.

Supports rewind.

Supports emulating two Game Boy Advance systems locally with link cable support.

Supports netplay with random matchmaking.

The menu shows many ways to make use of these features, the link cable ones are pretty interesting as they show regular multiplayer for a couple games, Trade with Pokémon Pinball, Single Pak Multiplayer exemple so you can play with other players who don't have the cartridge, Golden Sun Clear Save import into Golden Sun The Lost Age.

The ROM patches are mostly the anti-epilepsy kind with less blinking and flashing.

Image Filters shows off the LCD Persistence emulation and Color gamma comparisons with specific games.

Accuracy testing samples includes Nintendo's own test (AGS Aging Test), but also a bunch of open source ones to guarentee accuracy testing. The regular Nintendo test is also a very good test for accuracy in general, and turns out that Sloop actually passes all of the tests except one, which not many emulators can actually do.

Selected features shows features like replays, save importation, the ability to record with rewind supported (TAS?), and the most controversial of all, exporting a save state to the EZ Flash format; Nintendo has been very vocal against flashcarts public, but the developers don't seem to be against using them.

After all, using old development kits with different standards nowadays, can be very annoying and cumbersome. Some would doubt the legitimacy of this because of the mention of illegal flashcarts that Nintendo fought against in public.

I think the emulator's uniqueness is essentially what makes it potentially legit anyway: We haven't yet found any references to other emulators, even the AGS Aging Test results are fairly unique to the emulator.

Inside the emulator files, we find somehow a Git repository with quite a bit of logs from a NERD employee and a Panasonic Vietnam employee for some reason, just for menu, ROM files, save files, etc, the most recent being August 19th, 2020, so this might be our build date, or at least the closest to that.

It is something that can be faked, but god would it require a lot of time for little payoff, honestly?

Conclusion

The thing about this leak, it is very weird that we randomly get builds of official emulators that are dated 2019 and 2020 only now. It makes me question who the heck leaked this.

Because of these build dates, it is not really possible to extrapolate to a potential nearby release regarding those, as they're quite dated by now, and may have changed a lot since in terms of features and stability.

We can't really use this as evidence of those systems and games coming to Nintendo Switch Online in the near future as a result, so I'd just suggest to treat these builds as an exemple of what Nintendo has internally, without any goals in mind. It is not new by Nintendo's standards to keep stuff under wraps until they really need it, unfortunately.

Personally though, due to the uniqueness of the GB/C and GBA emulators, if it was a fake, then someone took a lot of time, and also a lot of knowledge, just to fake us. There's a lot of believable fakes sometimes, but this isn't a fake made with good use of art tools, this is a real thing with serious development put into them. I think all of these builds are legitimate.

This year in JavaScript: 2018 in review and npm’s predictions for 2019

This study is adapted from my presentation npm and the Future of JavaScript. No data is perfect; if you have questions about ours you can read about the methodology used to gather this data.

npm has over 10 million users who download well over 30 billion packages every month. On an average Tuesday—npm’s busiest day—users download more than 1.3 billion packages of open source JavaScript. This gives us a lot of information about what JavaScript users are up to. On top of that data, in partnership with the Node.js Foundation and the JS Foundation we survey of over 16,000 developers to ask what they’re up to.

From these two sources, we’ve uncovered some insights about the makeup of the npm community, as well as information about what the community considers to be best practices. This will help you make your technical choices in 2019.

JavaScript is the world’s most popular programming language

It’s no news to anyone that JavaScript is incredibly popular these days. Stack Overflow’s 2018 developer survey has JavaScript as the most popular programming language (with fellow web languages HTML and CSS at the #2 and #3 spots). GitHub’s most recent Octoverse infographic ranks languages by the number of pull requests received, and JavaScript is the top there, too.

The total number of JavaScript developers is hard to estimate. Slashdata’s 2018 survey suggests there were 9.7M by the end of 2017 and growing quickly, meaning there are well over 10M at this point. npm’s own estimates suggest there are over 10M npm users, and we see similarly rapid growth. There are JavaScript developers who do not yet use npm, but as a percentage of all JavaScript developers they are quite small, possibly fewer than 10%.

The npm Registry contributes to the popularity of JavaScript

Without question, JavaScript’s popularity is driven by its ubiquity as the only language directly usable for developing web applications. However, a fascinating paper by Leo Meyerovich and Ariel Rabkin at Berkeley studied the factors contributing to programming language adoption and found that, overall, the availability of open-source libraries relevant to the task at hand was the most important factor in selecting a programming language.

Our own survey data support the conclusions of this study. The most common reason respondents gave for choosing JavaScript was the number of libraries available.

With over 836,000 libraries currently available, npm is the largest single collection of open-source libraries in the world, by a significant margin—although JavaScript’s tendency towards smaller libraries means this comparison isn’t entirely apples-to-apples. Regardless, this enormous reservoir of open source code means that the popularity of JavaScript and npm works both ways: the language gains popularity because of the Registry, and vice versa.

npm is used to build every kind of application

We asked users where the JavaScript they write is used. An overwhelming 93% of respondents said that they write code for the web, with a still-substantial 70% saying they write JavaScript that runs on servers, i.e., Node.js. However, many other application areas including Internet of Things (IoT), desktop applications, native mobile applications, and others saw substantial numbers of users, too.

This is a significant change for those of us who work at npm, Inc. and maintain the npm command-line tool. npm was invented to serve the needs of server-side app developers, and the needs of web developers are different. Becoming a majority-web platform has meant changing our priorities, which has ledto new features like package locking by default.

npm is essential to web development

When npm, Inc. started in 2014, a tree of a few dozen JavaScript packages was typical. These days, the average modern web application has over 1000 modules, and trees of over 2000 modules are not uncommon. In fact, 97% of the code in a modern web application comes from npm. An individual developer is responsible only for the final 3% that makes their application unique and useful.

This is a huge success story for code reuse, for the strength of the npm community, and for open source in general. The time saved by not re-inventing the code in thousands of modules is saving millions of developers hundreds of millions of coding-hours.

npm has focused on security in 2018

To a great many developers, npm has simply become the way you build a website. This is a responsibility we take seriously. In our survey, 77% of developers said they were concerned about the quality and security of the open source libraries they used, and a worrying 52% said the tools currently available were inadequate. We went into more depth on these results in our post Attitudes to Security in the JavaScript community earlier this year.

In April, we announced that we acquired ^Lift Security and their product, the Node Security Platform. Today, the NSP is integrated directly into npm, and every install of npm includes security audits that notify users if they are installing insecure modules. We also furnish tools to easily correct these vulnerabilities by automatically installing secure versions of their modules. In addition, users of npm Enterprise and paid npm Organizations users receive notifications of embargoed vulnerabilities not yet publicly disclosed.

The demographics of npm users

The basic demographics of our survey respondents are covered in our methodology post, but there are several important facts worth highlighting:

1. We are mostly new. 25% have been using JavaScript for less than 2 years, and 51% have been using npm for less than 2 years. This is a side effect of the community doubling in size in that time!

2. We are mostly self-taught. 69% of npm users mostly taught themselves JavaScript, with the next highest being 22% who learned on the job.

We don’t just write JavaScript. People who use npm aren’t always strictly JavaScript developers—30% each report writing Java, PHP, and Python, and smaller numbers of lots of other languages.

We don’t just work at “tech” companies. 55% of npm users describe themselves as working at a company that wouldn’t be considered a “tech” company.

There are also some ways that npm users don’t differ from the general population of software developers, which is itself interesting. For example, npm users work at every size of company, in roughly the same proportion as those companies exist. JavaScript isn’t a “big company” or a “small company” tech. npm users also are evenly distributed across every industry, as well as other demographics such as age and education level.

Everybody would like less tooling

JavaScript in 2018 is somewhat notorious for requiring a lot of tooling to get going, which is quite a reversal from the situation in 2014, when Node.js was considered an “everything included” framework. Today, most developers wouldn’t consider Node to be a framework at all. True to that, all of our survey respondents would like to see less tooling, less configuration required to get started, and better documentation of the tools that do exist. But what tools?

We went in-depth into the popularity of JavaScript frameworks in our “State of JavaScript Frameworks” series (part 1, part 2, part 3) earlier this year. We won’t reiterate all the findings of that analysis, but rather dive into a few updates of what’s changed in the 9 months since then.

As a reminder, it’s important to understand the “share of registry” metric we are using here: a “flat” graph in this case means strong growth, just not growth relative to the growth of the registry, which is always growing quickly.

React’s growth has slowed

React continues to dominate the web scene. Over 60% of npm’s survey respondents say they are using React, and it has grown further since then. However, that growth in 2018 has been slower than in 2017.

Angular downloads have stayed flat

The two major flavors of Angular combined have stayed roughly flat in terms of market share.

Ember’s popularity has rebounded

In a very unusual phenomenon, Ember’s popularity, which appeared to be declining, has continued a strong rebound. By September, more than twice as many developers were using Ember as at the beginning of the year. We’re going to keep a close eye on this story, but we think Ember’s resurgence is part of the explanation for the slowdown in React.

Vue’s strong growth has continued

Vue was already growing quickly and that continued in 2018. Many Vue users report that they picked it over React because in their opinion it’s easier to get started while maintaining extensibility. Our current theory is that React’s growth has been slowed by many newer users picking Vue.

GraphQL continues hyper-growth

GraphQL, tracked by its most popular client library Apollo, continues to explode in popularity. We think it’s going to be a technical force to reckon with in 2019.

Transpilers rule, led by Babel—and a surprise: TypeScript

Babel is familiar to any React user as the tool used to transpile React’s next-generation JavaScript into the currently-supported JavaScript standards. In line with React’s 60% market share, 65% of npm users report using Babel. (It also has uses outside of the React ecosystem.)

Something of a surprise, however, was TypeScript, with 46% of survey respondents reporting they use Microsoft’s the type-checked JavaScript variant. This is major adoption for a tool of this kind and might signal a sea change in how developers write JavaScript. We are definitely going to be asking more questions about TypeScript usage in the next version of our survey.

npm’s predictions for 2019

It’s always difficult to make predictions about an ecosystem as huge, varied, and fast-changing as JavaScript, but our data has led us to make a few predictions for 2019 that we think we can commit to.

1. You will abandon one of your current tools. Frameworks and tools don’t last in JavaScript. The average framework has a phase of peak popularity of 3–5 years, followed by years of slow decline as people maintain legacy applications but move to newer frameworks for new work. Be prepared to learn new frameworks, and don’t hold on to your current tools too tightly.

2. Despite a slowdown in growth, React will be the dominant framework in 2019. 60% market share for a web framework is unheard-of, and that’s partly because React isn’t a full framework, just part of one. This allows it to flexibly cover more use-cases. But for building a web app in 2019, more people will use React than anything else, and that will result in a big advantage in terms of tutorials, advice, and bug fixes.

3. You’ll need to learn GraphQL. It might be too early to put GraphQL into production, especially if your API is already done, but 2019 is the year you should get your mind around the concepts of GraphQL. There’s a good chance you’ll be using them in new projects later in the year and in 2020.

4. Somebody on your team will bring in TypeScript. 46% adoption implies that TypeScript is more than just a tool for enthusiasts. Real people are getting real value out of the extra safety provided by type-checking. Especially if you’re a member of a larger team, consider adopting TypeScript into your 2019 projects.

2021 predictions for mobile marketing

Last year’s predictions post: 2020 predictions for mobile marketing. Note: this is the first part of a two-part prediction series. Part two will be published next Monday, December 28.

I considered not publishing a predictions post this year because 2021 feels fundamentally unpredictable. Apple’s announcement at WWDC that it will deprecate the IDFA and introduce the App Tracking Transparency framework was foreseeable; I presented a hypothetical chain of events catalyzed by IDFA deprecation back in February, and frankly, I had expected the IDFA to be deprecated at WWDC 2019.

But 2021 is different. Every player in the ecosystem has been put into a defensive posture and sits on far less stable ground than they did at this point last year. Perhaps the lack of clarity around how the mobile advertising ecosystem will evolve in 2021 renders a post like this even more necessary. But if the degree to which 2020 has progressed through a series of anxiety-inducing announcements continues unabated, 2021 certainly promises to be lively.

2021 will be dominated by the privacy-focused changes initially from Apple and then maybe from Google. We already know the format of the SKAdNetwork changes to some extent, but the ramifications of those changes will be seen throughout the year.

Firstly, I believe that that will be an arms race for the ownership of conversion values. Ultimately the owner of the conversion value will dictate where the majority of UA spend on iOS goes. This will result in Facebook, MMPs, and developers contesting who decides the schema of conversion values. My bet is Facebook wins by owning or effectively owning conversion values through a bridge to their internal data set.

I do not believe that Google will make privacy-related changes to the extent that Apple has. Google already believes that GAID is privacy compliant, and given that they are an ad network at heart, they have much more skin in the game when considering the impacts to their revenue.

Data is a lagging indicator, and as such it has led to a set of high-iteration, low-value behaviors in UA. The above privacy changes will, in my opinion, result in the pendulum swinging back to somewhere between product marketing and performance marketing. This will lead to a general increase in the quality of creative that we see and a reduction in the “Data only” focus that the majority of UA teams have.

I believe this year will be the year that we truly see a decline in Hyper-casual. The main driver of this will be the fact that the advertisers who were bidding high CPIs on that traffic, in the hope of finding one or two high-value payers that pay for all of the other wasted impressions, will dissipate. The reason for this is advertisers who use high-risk, high-cost, high-reward strategies will no longer have the user-level information that they had before to enable them to understand which strategies work and which do not at the level of the individual user. The only thing that they will understand is aggregate level information and as such, they will be more risk-averse, leading to lower CPIs and lower eCPMS on the ad monetization side. The margins will become too fine for Ad networks and as such hyper-casual will become unviable.

I do not believe that having many DAU combined in hyper-casual titles is actually a viable strategy against IDFA deprecation. The reality is the percentage of those users that have IAP capable payment processing means is extremely low and as such the value is really only in showing another advertising impression. This means the strategies that companies like Zynga have employed to stave off the risk of IDFA deprecation will prove to be shortsighted.

Lastly, the true winners of 2021 will be the products that understand that LTV and CPI are two sides of the same coin. Hyper-core will be a dominant strategy in 2021. Games that have high IPM, low eCPI, but exceptionally high early conversion to payer will be the staple in 2021. We will not see another Game of War-esque success.

The biggest challenge for people in our space, especially in 2021: get out of our comfort zone and adapt to the paradigm shift in tracking as privacy impacts how we execute and measure marketing. Two cliché buzz words we need to “deconstruct” and relearn are: creative and incrementality. Health warning here: these are all predictions, inherently data fewer theories!

Creative, which is often misconstrued as the least scientific aspect in our field, is indeed becoming perhaps the only element we can have real total control of in marketing, so what it really needs is a solid data infrastructure to support it. If you took a simple approach, we could breakdown into 3 distinct pieces:

a background, setting the scene,

a midground showing the MC of the message (human, alien, machine, etc),

a foreground with some interaction, or speech, or object, etc.

These are the variables you can control with your assets and they can be associated with a verified KPI, ideally IPM. Once we have built a significant number of assets in this fashion, we can then run intelligently as many permutations as needed to scientifically find the winning combination that drives successful creative.

2021 might just be the year we finally push business intelligence to creative in order to “rinse and repeat” these permutations because as your audience grows, so should your message change to appeal to different personas. Of course so should the store page but let’s park that can of worms.

Whatever becomes more data-driven in 2021, creative or not, we need to demystify incrementality. In a business where there is no “official truth” (aside from what the stores pay you in revenues!) you have to establish the meaning of “lift” relevant to your business by answering a few simple questions (which could be cohorted by geo/channel/platform) e.g. freemium game :

How much more conversion to pay are we seeing from paid media?

How much more FTUE conversion is being observed by buying users?

How much is the revenue incremented by investing in both channel A and channel B or can we just invest in channel A?

We are going to have to step out of our comfort zone that ROAS that has provided us for years with a false sense of “deterministic security” based on widely adopted inaccurate attribution models. With lift driven KPIs we can build scorecards for every channel based on the weight of each KPI and invest in that media accordingly. We should also be able to understand better the “true value” that the SANs bring to the table without having to “default” to them as standard.

Last thing for 2021: talent management. As the damned 2020 taught us, there are pros and cons to Work From Home, but most importantly we have to learn how to manage and retain talent in these distributed virtual teams. Most talent practices are constrained by physical presence and now we must strive to appreciate what matters to employees not just in the office but also at home. Management must get “personal” as we enter each other’s homes and OKRs should take care of one’s health and family as much as the business.

Product and UA teams become one

With iOS14 coming in January, more than ever the product and user acquisitions teams will need to be one and the same.

With SKAdNetwork’s complex timers for conversions, UA will start shaping more and more the way the player journey and monetization is designed within games (rather than the other way around). There will be an even bigger need to focus on the first 24 hours of the users and these two teams will really need to design together the First Time User Experience.

The Battle pass type monetization will grow in 2021 as it proves to be a model that is more compatible with the post-IDFA UA world. Games will be looking for higher conversion at lower price points because UA teams won’t be able to afford to bet $50 to acquire a whale when they can’t target historical monetizers. This will be especially true for hardcore games, which will need to shift their monetization strategy to focus more on the top of the funnel.

Lastly, this could also impact the nature of M&A in 2021, where more companies will be looking to acquire big user bases to potentially own their IDFVs.

2021 is likely to be a year of foundational stabilization: Apple disturbed the status quo, and the major participants in the mobile advertising ecosystem will need to establish new operating norms. This will entail a great deal of experimentation and trial-and-error, some of which may result in novel new advertising products and services.

ATT will be made mandatory in March. I don’t believe that Apple will offer any additional delays to ATT implementation or change its scope, and developers will need to implement ATT as it is currently understood. No substantive workarounds or loopholes will surface that allow developers to evade the impact of ATT.

App advertising spend on iOS will contract by 30-40% over the course of Q2 following the rollout of ATT. Advertisers will immediately scale their spend back once ATT is made mandatory as they observe how CPMs, install rates, etc. react. This pullback will persist over Q2 2021 and will be meaningful: 30-40%.

Advertisers with products in the “broad middle” will scale their ad spend in the second half of 2021. CPMs will decrease as competition for the best-monetizing users abates (since they are no longer specifically targetable), but some companies with products that fit into the “broad middle” of consumer appeal may not see their funnel conversion metrics degrade to the same degree, allowing them to scale spend.

Demand for PMPs and programmatic direct placements will increase. Large, multi-product companies will recognize the need to in-house programmatic advertising, with contextual analysis being seen as a competitive advantage. PMPs will become increasingly popular as companies seek to buy relevant, pre-vetted traffic, and so will direct placements.

Facebook experiments with projects that blunt the impact of ATT and marginally increase efficiency. Facebook will test a number of methods for improving ad targeting with contextual or aggregated signals and differential privacy techniques, some of which may be successful at marginally winning back some of the efficiency lost with ATT. I also think Facebook will make more aggressive moves in shifting content either entirely to within its app (eg. Facebook / IG shopping, which takes place in FB-loaded modals and is entirely first-party) or on the open web, such as with its new gaming platform. The war between Facebook and Apple will intensify, accelerating the world closer to the future of mobile content platforms.

Android becomes the new battleground for advertising inventory and some apps abandon iOS advertising altogether. Android might become the only platform on which certain types of apps are able to capably advertise; as some developers shift their focus to more broadly-appealing content themes, others simply stop advertising on iOS and focus exclusively on Android as their apps. The most attractive Android inventory becomes even more competitive than top-tier iOS inventory.

D2C advertising spend decreases by as much as 50%. Facebook dropped a bombshell on the advertising industry last week when it announced that app-to-web campaigns would be impacted by ATT restrictions, which means that D2C campaigns will become much less efficient as ad performance is aggregated at the campaign level. Most D2C companies are almost entirely dependent on Facebook’s ability to target historical spenders and email lookalikes for growth, and this change to app-to-web targeting and measurement will imperil the D2C business model.

Google will announce a privacy preservation policy with respect to the GAID near the end of 2021, but it won’t be as impactful as ATT. I don’t think that Google will fully deprecate the GAID, instead electing to keep it hidden from advertisers while still processing it via Firebase and passing it to ad networks (including its own!).
