Setting Up Plex Media Player on Apple TV 3 (no jailbreak req)

For Mac OS:

Download Plex Content

Unzip file and move it to your Applications Folder

Setup a Static IP (fixed IP address). Scroll to the top left, click the Apple icon > system preference > and open “Network”). 

Click, Advanced > TCP/IP. Under “Configure IPv4″ select “Manually”

Under IPv4 Address, use a unique address not in use.

Click “OK” and “apply”. Ensure your DNS, has your router address. (advanced > TCP/IP, note the “Router” number. Then click the DNS Tab and double check the router address is present under DNS Server, click ok and apply.

Download, install and run Plex Media Server , and add all your media.

Generate Plex Certificates by opening “Terminal” (Applications > Utilities > Terminal). Copy and paste the following with quotes ( ” )

openssl req -new -nodes -newkey rss:2048 -out ~/Desktop/trailers.pem -keyout ~/Desktop/trailers.key -x509 -days 7300 -subj "/C=US/CN=trailers.apple.com"

openssl x509 -in ~/Desktop/trailers.pem -outform der -out ~/Desktop/trailers.cer && cat ~/Desktop/trailers.key >> ~/Desktop/trailers.pem

This will create 3 files on your desktop. trailers.key, trailers.cer, trailers.pem. Copy these files to Applications > PlexConnect-master > assets > certificates

Run Plex by typing in exactly the following command into “Terminal” and press enter 

sudo "/Applications/PlexConnect-master/PlexConnect.py"

If you want Plex to launch at Start-Up enter the following

cd "/Applications/PlexConnect-master/support/OSX" sudo ./install.bash

Configure Apple TV by doing the following on your Apple TV: Settings > General > Network > Wi-Fi. Then Select your Wi-Fi Network Name

Change the DNS setting from "Automatic" to "Manual" Under Configure DNS

Click DNS and change the DNS to the Unique IPv4 Address you chose from before. Mine was 192.168.0.69. Then Click “Done”

Last but not least, load the certificates into your Apple TV 3

Go to “Settings” on your Apple TV

Select “General” then scroll down and highlight “Send Data To Apple” and set it to "No".

With "Send Data To Apple" highlighted, press the “Play” button on the remote (not the “Select” button) and you will be prompted to add a profile.

Enter in the following:

http://trailers.apple.com/trailers.cer

Click “Done” and thats it. To access your library, open the “Trailers” app on your Apply TV.

Make sure there is media loaded on your Plex Media Server. ***Note, your computer has to be on for the media to load on your Apple TV.
