Unemployed? Watch This 21-Year Old’s Ingenious “Hire Me” Video Feat. Star Wars Action Figures
College Senior Brandon Yoon created a clever Star Wars video that arrests potential employers’ … [+] attention
Brandon Yoon
Like every professor in the world, I’m teaching my Spring UC Santa Barbara startup courses remotely. My office hours are now conducted via Zoom, which can be a challenge, given that I’m teaching over 400 students this quarter.
Not surprisingly, our office hours’ time has been consumed by questions related to, “How To Get A Job In A Pandemic.” Recruiting is a normal topic during the Spring quarter, as many of my students are graduating and those remaining at the university are seeking summer internships. However, in the midst of a pandemic, students’ anxiety and fears are amplified exponentially.
I remind my students that great companies are always hiring great people, irrespective of exogenous conditions. Thus, their task is to grab their target company’s attention and convey, in very specific terms, their passion to join their team and the value they will add. They must express their enthusiasm in a memorable and unconventional manner, without coming across as zany or unprofessional.
Standout – Be Different
During office hours last week, I discussed several ways a recruit can differentiate themselves from their competition, including making a brief video.
One of my star students, graduating Senior Brandon Yoon, took on this challenge and crafted a highly engaging and creative video which articulates why he wants to become an Academic Advisor within UCLA’s Political Science Department. You can watch his ingenious 2:00 minute video below.
Brandon initially attempted to film a video of himself speaking into the camera. However, this approach was stilted, causing him to come across as ill at ease. Per Brandon, “After an hour of failed attempts, I realized that this just wasn’t going to work. I was laughing at how ridiculous I looked trying to endorse myself so seriously. So instead, I decided to try something different that can be more enjoyable for everyone to watch.”
As an alternative, he took the script he created for his “talking head” video and used it as a voiceover to a stop-action animated video, starring Star Wars action figures.
He opens the video by saying, “I’m a soon-to-graduate student from UC Santa Barbara. I’m really excited to be applying for this position within UCLA’s political science department. Here are three valuable traits I have to offer as a future advisor.”
He goes on to describe three characteristics he possesses which lend themselves to success as an academic adviser: Adaptability, Active Listening and Initiative. Rather than just stating his traits, he reinforces them with concrete examples. After watching the video, I don’t see how a recruiter wouldn’t take the time to interview Brandon.
It took Brandon about four days to make the video. “Animating and editing took much patience, of course, but filmmaking is always a creative process I enjoy. The first day of planning was the most difficult though, because I was just imagining everything in my head and committing to the idea itself. I was thinking about things like ‘Why am I making this? Will my potential employers understand my humor? What if they just think I’m incredibly strange?’”

Brandon created his video without special equipment or training
Brandon Yoon
You don’t need any particulars skills or equipment to emulate Brandon’s approach, other than a smartphone, free video editing software and a lot of patience. Brandon explained that his “training” was a third grade, “Stop Motion Filmmaking summer camp… There was just something delightful about seeing mundane and inanimate objects come to life and express human-like personality. People definitely don’t need expensive equipment to make their own unique videos. As long as they are enjoying themselves and using their creative imagination, anyone can make an interesting film. If you have fun while making it, then it’ll be worth it no matter what.”
Clearly Brandon’s use of action figures might be too whimsical for certain positions. However, given that he is young, and his prospective job involves working with young people, the tone and sentiment of his video is congruent with the job he is seeking.
Other Recruiting Tips In A Pandemic
Make Meaning – One of the most common job search mistakes applicants make, seems intuitive. They believe that the more companies they reach out to, the better their odds of securing a position. In fact, this is the opposite approach you should take.
Determining why you want to work at a prospective employer is the most important step in your job search process. Rather than sending your resume to a slew of companies that you don’t know well, select five to ten companies whose mission speaks to you. If you believe in the ways a company is changing the world for the better, it will be easy for you to express an authentic desire to join their team. Go to school on these “target companies,” learning everything you can. This will differentiate you from your peers during the interview process.
Certifications – Once the virus subsides, expect employers to ask you, “What did you during your corona-staycation.” Many people, especially students, currently have more discretionary time, as evidenced by the doubling of the average U.S. consumer’s daily content viewing, from four hours, to eight (source: OnePoll’s recent survey of 2,000 viewers).
You can increase your marketability by applying your free time to augment your professional skills and knowledge. To this end, there are a number of free / nearly-free online certifications.
Select subjects which relate most closely to your intended career field. For instance, if you’re interested in sales, become proficient with Salesforce by accessing the company’s Trialhead materials. Interested in marketing? Google and the HubSpot Academy offer a number of free courses and certifications.
Similar accreditations are available for ubiquitous software solutions, such as Oracle, Microsoft, Adobe and SAP, though not all are free. If you’re not sure which tech tools your target companies are using, HG Insights offers a free chrome plugin that lists companies’ tech solutions. <Note: I’m on HG Insights’ Board>
Lifelong Learning – If your career does not lend itself to accreditations, you can still enhance your marketability by taking free, online courses. If you want to learn a bit about coding, consider the Khan Academy and Codeacademy. You can also take general courses through Cousera,
Avoid Gatekeepers – In the best of times, it can be challenging to capture the attention of a target company. During a pandemic, it can be nearly impossible, especially if you utilize conventional methods, such as approaching a company’s human resources department.
Instead, contact the potential hiring manager directly. The most effective way to gain their attention is to get a reference from a current or former employee. Do this by reaching out to such folks via LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. Ask them if they can give you 15-minutes on the phone (or a quick coffee in non-pandemic conditions). If you can establish a comfortable rapport, they might even agree to introduce you to your target hiring manager via email. At the very least, you will gain valuable insights about the target company’s culture, your potential boss and other information that will prove useful once you begin the interview process.
Brandon submitted his application to UCLA, with a link to the video, a few days ago. He hasn’t heard back yet, but to hedge his bets, he’s in the process of making additional “hire Me” videos, saying, “I will most definitely continue experimenting with animation techniques when applying for future jobs! To me, the most important thing is for potential employers to catch a glimpse of my personality. If I have genuine reasons for wanting to work with them, I want them to see why they should value me as a future team member as well.”
I wish Brandon and all the other 2020 college graduates around the world, tremendous success in launching their post-college careers in this challenging environment.

1. What are the various tools? Name a few? A few more Cognos Decision Stream Oracle Warehouse Builder Business Objects XI (Extreme Insight) SAP Business Warehouse SAS Enterprise ETL Server Along with the above, need to include the below tools --Informatica --Abintio --DataStage 2. What are snapshots? What are materialized views & where do we use them? What is a materialized view? Materialized view is a view in wich data is also stored in some temp table.i.e if we will go with the View concept in DB in that we only store query and once we call View it extract data from DB.But In materialized View data is stored in some temp tables. 3. What is fact less fact table? where you have used it in your project? Fact less table means only the key available in the Fact there is no measures available. factless fact table means that contains only foreign keys with out any measures example:attendance report of employees in a particular company contains no measures only 4. Can we look-up a table from source qualifier transformation. ie. unconnected lookup? You cannot lookup from a source qualifier directly. However, you can override the SQL in the source qualifier to join with the lookup table to perform the lookup. 5. Where do we use connected and un connected lookups? If return port only one then we can go for unconnected. More than one return port is not possible with Unconnected. If more than one return port then go for Connected. If you require dynamic cache i.e where your data will change dynamically then you can go for connceted lookup. If your data is static where your data won't change when the session loads you can go for unconnected lookups 6. Where do we use semi and non additive facts? Additve: A masure can participate arithmatic calulatons using all or any demensions. Ex: Sales profit Semi additive: A masure can participate arithmatic calulatons using some demensions. Ex: Sales amount Non Additve:A masure can't participate arithmatic calulatons using demensions. Ex: temparature 7. What are non-additive facts in detail? A fact may be measure, metric or a dollar value. Measure and metric are non additive facts. Dollar value is additive fact. If we want to find out the amount for a particular place for a particular period of time, we can add the dollar amounts and come up with the total amount. A non additive fact, for eg measure height(s) for 'citizens by geographical location' , when we rollup 'city' data to 'state' level data we should not add heights of the citizens rather we may want to use it to derive 'count' 8. What is a staging area? Do we need it? What is the purpose of a staging area? Data staging is actually a collection of processes used to prepare source system data for loading a data warehouse. Staging includes the following steps: Source data extraction, Data transformation (restructuring), Data transformation (data cleansing, value transformations), Surrogate key assignments 9. What is a three tier data warehouse? A data warehouse can be thought of as a three-tier system in which a middle system provides usable data in a secure way to end users. On either side of this middle system are the end users and the back-end data stores. 10. What are the various methods of getting incremental records or delta records from the source systems? One foolproof method is to maintain a field called 'Last Extraction Date' and then impose a condition in the code saying 'current_extraction_date > last_extraction_date'.
Oracle ETL Interview Questions 11. What are the various tools? - Name a few? A few are Abinitio DataStage Informatica Cognos Decision Stream Oracle Warehouse Builder Business Objects XI (Extreme Insight) SAP Business Warehouse SAS Enterprise ETL Server 12. What is latest version of Power Center / Power Mart? The Latest Version is 7.2 13. What is the difference between Power Center & Power Mart? Power Center - ability to organize repositiries into a data mart domain and share metadata across repositiries. Power Mart - only local repositiry can be created. 14. What are the various transformation available? Aggregator Transformation Expression Transformation Filter Transformation Joiner Transformation Lookup Transformation Normalizer Transformation Rank Transformation Router Transformation Sequence Generator Transformation Stored Procedure Transformation Sorter Transformation Update Strategy Transformation XML Source Qualifier Transformation Advanced External Procedure Transformation External Transformation 15. What is ODS (operation data source)? ODS - Operational Data Store. ODS Comes between staging area & Data Warehouse. The data is ODS will be at the low level of granularity. Once data was poopulated in ODS aggregated data will be loaded into into EDW through ODS. 16. What is the difference between etl tool and olap tools? ETL tool is ment for extraction data from the legecy systems and load into specified data base with some process of cleansing data. ex: Informatica, data stage ....etc OLAP is ment for Reporting purpose.in OLAP data avaliable in Mulitidimectional model. so that u can write smple query to extract data fro the data base. ex: Businee objects,Cognos....etc 17. What is the metadata extension? Informatica allows end users and partners to extend the metadata stored in the repository by associating information with individual objects in the repository. For example, when you create a mapping, you can store your contact information with the mapping. You associate information with repository metadata using metadata extensions. Informatica Client applications can contain the following types of metadata extensions: Vendor-defined. Third-party application vendors create vendor-defined metadata extensions. You can view and change the values of vendor-defined metadata extensions, but you cannot create, delete, or redefine them. User-defined. You create user-defined metadata extensions using PowerCenter/PowerMart. You can create, edit, delete, and view user-defined metadata extensions. You can also change the values of user-defined extensions. 18. What are the various test procedures used to check whether the data is loaded in the backend, performance of the mapping, and quality of the data loaded in INFORMATICA? The best procedure to take a help of debugger where we monitor each and every process of mappings and how data is loading based on conditions breaks. 19. I am new to SAS, can anybody explain the process of extracting data from source systems, storing in ODS and how data modelling is done? There are various ways of Extracting Data from Source Systems. For example , You can use a DATA step, an Import Process .It depends with your input data styles. What kind of File/database it is residing in. Storing ur data in an ODS can be done thru an ODS stmt/export stmt/FILE stmt, again which depends on the file & data format ,You want your output to be in. 20. Techniques of Error Handling - Ignore, Rejecting bad records to a flat file, loading the records and reviewing them (default values)? Rejection of records either at the database due to constraint key violation or the informatica server when writing data into target table. These rejected records we can find in the badfiles folder where a reject file will be created for a session.we can check why a record has been rejected. And this bad file contains first column a row indicator and second column a column indicator. These row indicators or of four types D-valid data, O-overflowed data, N-null data, T- Truncated data, And depending on these indicators we can changes to load data successfully to target. 21. What is Full load & Incremental or Refresh load? Full Load: completely erasing the contents of one or more tables and reloading with fresh data. Incremental Load: applying ongoing changes to one or more tables based on a predefined schedule. 22. How to determine what records to extract? When addressing a table some dimension key must reflect the need for a record to get extracted. Mostly it will be from time dimension (e.g. date >= 1st of current mth) or a transaction flag (e.g. Order Invoiced Stat). Foolproof would be adding an archive flag to record which gets reset when record changes. 23. Do we need an ETL tool? When do we go for the tools in the market? ETL Tool: It is used to Extract(E) data from multiple source systems(like RDBMS,Flat files,Mainframes,SAP,XML etc) transform(T) them based on Business requirements and Load(L) in target locations.(like tables, files etc). Need of ETL Tool: An ETL tool is typically required when data scattered accross different systems.(like RDBMS,Flat files,Mainframes,SAP,XML etc). 24. Can we use procedural logic inside Infromatica? If yes how, if now how can we use external procedural logic in informatica? Yes, you can use advanced external transformation. for more detail you can refer the manual of informatica transformation guide in that advance external transformation. You can use c++ language on unix and c++, vb vc++ on windows server. 25. Can we override a native sql query within Informatica? Where do we do it? How do we do it? Yes,we can override a native sql query in source qualifier and lookup transformation. In lookup transformation we can find "Sql override" in lookup properties.by using this option we can do this. 26. What are parameter files? Where do we use them? Parameter file defines the value for parameter and variable used in a workflow, worklet or session. 27. How can we use mapping variables in Informatica? Where do we use them? Yes. we can use mapping variable in Informatica. The Informatica server saves the value of mapping variable to the repository at the end of session run and uses that value next time we run the session. 28. What is a mapping, session, worklet, workflow, mapplet? A mapping represents dataflow from sources to targets. A mapplet creates or configures a set of transformations. A workflow is a set of instruction sthat tell the Informatica server how to execute the tasks. A worklet is an object that represents a set of tasks. A session is a set of instructions that describe how and when to move data from sources to targets. 29. What is Informatica Metadata and where is it stored? Informatica Metadata is data about data which stores in Informatica repositories. 30. How do we call shell scripts from informatica? Specify the Full path of the Shell script the "Post session properties of session/workflow". 31. Can Informatica load heterogeneous targets from heterogeneous sources? yes, you can use heterogenous source and target in single mapping. But to join data from heterogenous source you have to use joiner transformation. 32. What are the different Lookup methods used in Informatica? Connected lookup Unconnected lookup Connected lookup will receive input from the pipeline and sends output to the pipeline and can return any number of values.it does not contain retun port. Unconnected lookup can return only one column. it containn return port. 33. What are active transformation / Passive transformations? Active transformation can change the number of rows that pass through it. (decrease or increase rows) Passive transformation can not change the number of rows that pass through it. 34. What are the modules in Power Mart? PowerMart Designer Server Server Manager Repository Repository Manager 35. Compare ETL & Manual development? ETL - The process of extracting data from multiple sources.(ex. flat files,XML, COBOL, SAP etc) is more simpler with the help of tools. Manual - Loading the data other than flat files and oracle table need more effort. ETL - High and clear visibilty of logic. Manual - complex and not so user friendly visibilty of logic. ETL - Contains Meta data and changes can be done easily. Manual - No Meta data concept and changes needs more effort. ETL- Error hadling, log summary and load progess makes life easier for developer and maintainer. Manual - need maximum effort from maintainance point of view. ETL - Can handle Historic data very well. Manual - as data grows the processing time degrads. These are some differences b/w manual and ETL developement. 36. When do we Analyze the tables? How do we do it? The ANALYZE statement allows you to validate and compute statistics for an index, table, or cluster. These statistics are used by the cost-based optimizer when it calculates the most efficient plan for retrieval. In addition to its role in statement optimization, ANALYZE also helps in validating object structures and in managing space in your system. You can choose the following operations: COMPUTER, ESTIMATE, and DELETE. Early version of Oracle7 produced unpredicatable results when the ESTIMATE operation was used. It is best to compute your statistics. EX: select OWNER, sum(decode(nvl(NUM_ROWS,9999), 9999,0,1)) analyzed, sum(decode(nvl(NUM_ROWS,9999), 9999,1,0)) not_analyzed, count(TABLE_NAME) total from dba_tables where OWNER not in ('SYS', 'SYSTEM') group by OWNER 37. What is partitioning? What are the types of partitioning? If you use PowerCenter, you can increase the number of partitions in a pipeline to improve session performance. Increasing the number of partitions allows the Informatica Server to create multiple connections to sources and process partitions of source data concurrently. When you create a session, the Workflow Manager validates each pipeline in the mapping for partitioning. You can specify multiple partitions in a pipeline if the Informatica Server can maintain data consistency when it processes the partitioned data. When you configure the partitioning information for a pipeline, you must specify a partition type at each partition point in the pipeline. The partition type determines how the Informatica Server redistributes data across partition points. The Workflow Manager allows you to specify the following partition types: Round-robin partitioning. The Informatica Server distributes data evenly among all partitions. Use round-robin partitioning where you want each partition to process approximately the same number of rows. For more information, see Round-Robin Partitioning. Hash partitioning. The Informatica Server applies a hash function to a partition key to group data among partitions. If you select hash auto-keys, the Informatica Server uses all grouped or sorted ports as the partition key. If you select hash user keys, you specify a number of ports to form the partition key. Use hash partitioning where you want to ensure that the Informatica Server processes groups of rows with the same partition key in the same partition. For more information, see Hash Partitioning. Key range partitioning. You specify one or more ports to form a compound partition key. The Informatica Server passes data to each partition depending on the ranges you specify for each port. Use key range partitioning where the sources or targets in the pipeline are partitioned by key range. For more information, see Key Range Partitioning. Pass-through partitioning. The Informatica Server passes all rows at one partition point to the next partition point without redistributing them. Choose pass-through partitioning where you want to create an additional pipeline stage to improve performance, but do not want to change the distribution of data across partitions. 38. What are snapshots? What are materialized views & where do we use them? What is a materialized view log? Snapshots are read-only copies of a master table located on a remote node which is periodically refreshed to reflect changes made to the master table. Snapshots are mirror or replicas of tables. Views are built using the columns from one or more tables. The Single Table View can be updated but the view with multi table cannot be updated. A View can be updated/deleted/inserted if it has only one base table if the view is based on columns from one or more tables then insert, update and delete is not possible. Materialized view A pre-computed table comprising aggregated or joined data from fact and possibly dimension tables. Also known as a summary or aggregate table. IBM, Marriott and Mickey Mouse Take On Tech’s Favorite Law

WASHINGTON — Disney and its powerful trade association have fought to stop the law’s spread abroad.Marriott has asked Congress to amend the law.IBM has a plan to slim it down.An unusual constellation of powerful companies and industries are fighting to weaken Big Tech by limiting the reach of one of its most sacred laws. The law, known as Section 230, makes it nearly impossible to sue platforms like Facebook or Google for the words, images and videos posted by their users. The companies’ motivations vary somewhat. Hollywood is concerned about copyright abuse, especially abroad, while Marriott would like to make it harder for Airbnb to fight local hotel laws. IBM wants consumer online services to be more responsible for the content on their sites. But they all see an opening as both Democrats and Republicans increasingly raise their own concerns about the power of the tech industry and the law. Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996 has helped Facebook, Google and YouTube grow into giants by holding only the people who post the billions of pieces of content on their services responsible for libel or other legal issues.Former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. said in a recent interview that Section 230 should be immediately “revoked.” Senators Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican, and Brian Schatz, a Hawaii Democrat, are drafting bills that could increase the tech companies’ liability. The Justice Department is conducting a review of the law.“People are either mad at tech companies and, legitimately in some cases, want to constrain their power for a lot of reasons,” said Daphne Keller, a professor at Stanford Law School who used to be a lawyer for Google. “Or companies are competing with tech companies and want to constrain their power for competitive reasons.“And a lot of those reasons are really complicated, but the easiest lever to hurt tech companies that a lot of people see is 230.”So far, the companies critical of the law have had mixed success with their lobbying. In 2018, Congress gave victims and prosecutors more power to sue websites that knowingly aided sex trafficking. The law passed with support from companies like Disney, Oracle and IBM.But the recent trade pact with Canada and Mexico contained Section 230-like protections, potentially locking in tech-friendly rules abroad. Now critics of Section 230 are focused on pushing to keep similar language out of future trade pacts. A handout distributed by Disney’s lobbyists last year warned Congress that trade deals with the provision would make it difficult for Congress to change the law in a way that improved the internet.“On an almost weekly basis,” the handout said, “additional concerns are being raised: illegal opioid sales, spread of terrorist propaganda, foreign government election meddling, spread of material and tools that help pedophiles connect.”Companies like Google and Facebook say that without Section 230 protections, building a business that gives individuals a platform for their content online would be impossible. They say it also shields online platforms from lawsuits when they police criminal or distasteful content.Silicon Valley can employ significant resources to make its case. Google and Facebook spend millions a year on federal lobbying and are regular donors to outside policy groups. Their allies on Capitol Hill, like Senator Ron Wyden, Democrat of Oregon, have defended the law.Michael Beckerman, the president of the Internet Association, an industry group whose members include Google and Facebook, said Section 230 was “foundational to almost everything people do online.”“It enables products and services that consumers love and rely upon every day,” Mr. Beckerman said in a statement. While criticism of Section 230 had mounted for years, the coalition of corporate interests questioning the value of the protections took root in late 2017 when Disney and 21st Century Fox backed the bill allowing lawsuits against web platforms for knowingly facilitating sex trafficking.“I had never seen them getting involved in any Section 230 issues before,” said Jeff Kosseff, a lawyer who wrote a book about the law. Now, hotel companies worry about Airbnb’s use of Section 230 in lawsuits seeking to block local ordinances regulating home-sharing platforms. Judges have ruled against the company in many of those cases. The Washington lobbying group that represents companies like Marriott, Hilton and Hyatt has backed a bill that would amend Section 230 so it didn’t apply to home-rental services in many cases.Airbnb declined to comment.IBM, which like other enterprise software providers is trying to distance itself from businesses like Facebook, has supported adjusting Section 230 so that companies must take “reasonable care” to keep unlawful uses of their platforms in check. The proposal would apply to companies that not only hosted information but also made it available to the public. That means it would cover a consumer service like Instagram but not to a cloud computing provider like IBM.The Motion Picture Association and the News Media Alliance, a group that lobbies for news organizations, have urged the Trump administration not to allow the protections in a future trade deal with Britain. The film group’s concern is that it could make copyright enforcement more difficult. (The New York Times is a member of the News Media Alliance.)Many of the consumer groups that have been critical of Section 230 don’t share the companies’ motivations. But they welcome the help from the companies, which have vast lobbying networks and the ability to get a meeting with the right aide at just the right time.Gretchen Peters, who leads the Alliance to Counter Crime Online, a group critical of Section 230, said her small organization was spread thin. If “somebody else, like the Disney folks or the hotel folks,” set up a meeting, she said, “I’ll come along.” Read the full article

Lego has finally followed up its amazing Porsche 911 GT3 Technic kit with a kit that's arguably more amazing, and certainly has more pieces. It's the 2018 Bugatti Chiron, and the 1/8 scale kit features 3,599 pieces, which is nearly 1,000 more than the 911. Those pieces make up an impressively detailed model just on looks alone. The blocky LED lights up front, the wide light bar at the rear and the trademark horseshoe design elements all translate surprisingly well to the Lego format. The interior has detailed seats and instruments, and there's even some Chiron luggage that fits under the trunk where there exists a unique serial number. But the really impressive stuff is under the plastic skin. Moving piston engines aren't new to Technic, but it is cool to see that Lego managed to create a tiny version of the W16 engine. You can clearly see each bank of narrow angle V8s and watch all the pistons dance. The engine is even hooked up to a real 8-speed sequential transmission. The transmission can be shifted via paddles in the driver's side footwell. The rear wing moves up and down, too, and is lowered for high-speed mode with a key you build out of Lego pieces. You'll want to make sure you have plenty of space on your table top for the finished product, since it's nearly two feet long. And budget plenty of time for assembling those thousands of pieces. But once you're finished, you'll have your own Bugatti Chiron with many of the same functioning features for so much less money. On that topic, the Chiron kit will cost $349.99, which isn't entirely cheap, but it is coming with a lot of parts and functionality. It's available through Lego stores both physical and online right now, and hits other stores on August 1. Meet the Instructor: A Passion for Databases & Exploring Career Paths
When Aspen Olmsted began college in Buffalo, NY in the 1980s, he was an economics major. While working part-time for the Buffalo Philharmonic he was introduced to the power of programming and databases and quickly added a minor in computer science.
“The Buffalo Philharmonic bought a client server system with a database behind it to do their ticketing and fundraising. I was just a part-time worker, but the rest of the organization sort of ran the other direction,” Olmsted said. “I started writing code against the database so I could produce things like their season tickets or their renewal notices. I was really hooked from that point.”
Today, Olmsted is hooking others as an adjunct faculty member in the New York University Tandon School of Engineering in the Computer Science and Engineering department and instructor for the latest MicroBachelors® program on edX: Introduction to Databases. In this interview, he shares more about why he got into databases, the skills you’ll learn in the MicroBachelors program, and the types of career paths database skills unlock.
youtube
What’s compelling about databases? Why were you hooked?
Having access to your data and figuring out the key points to capture so you can then report on it is a big piece of most businesses today. Try to think of an application that doesn’t have a database behind it, it’s really hard. Games have databases behind them. Websites have databases behind them. Business software has databases behind them. Databases are everywhere.
I’m really a minimalist. When I was a programmer, I was a C programmer, which is this really compact language. Database programming is very similar. I can deliver a lot of value in a consulting job with one line of code. I like that minimalism of databases. It’s also this concept of non-procedural programming. In languages like Java or C++ or C, that’s procedural programming where you say, “Okay computer, now do this. If this is true, do this other thing.” But in databases you say, “Go get this for me. I don’t care how you do it, just do it.” It’s more rewarding, right? Just seeing the results come back. You can teach people quickly to get some benefit from them, so even learning a little bit of database skill, you can see that benefit come back.
What will students take away from the Intro to Databases program?
The Introduction to the Databases MicroBachelors program is a very applied program. There are 52 labs that are hands-on experience for the students across the three courses.
youtube
The best part is when you walk away with this course, you’ve written 52 successful queries that solve real problems. At the very end of that last course, I have a lecture sharing other things you need to learn—I give you the links for reading, we talk about other commercial databases like Microsoft SQL, Oracle, IBM Db2, MariaDB, and noSQL databases. Students really walk away with concrete skills they can use, but also knowing where they need to go next.
Did you know? NYU’s MicroBachelors program in Introduction to Databases covers much of the material required to take the MySQL8.0 Database Developer Oracle Certified Professional exam.
What types of career pathways do database skills unlock?
I really think there are two pathways for students. One pathway is you’re working and you want to find a way to transition from your current job to a more technical job. The other pathway is you’re going to apply for another job someplace else that’s more technical.
Applying Database Skills to Your Current Job or Experience
Whenever I’ve taught a project management course to an undergraduate class, I always say you’ll probably find yourself someplace in the world working where you have a project that you’re a stakeholder in where you’re bringing in a piece of software, and you may be the user of that software and making decisions about it. That’s a great context to think about learning new skills because lots of people have been involved with a software change at their work, or some sort of change that we’ve all just gone through here with COVID-19 where suddenly people are working from home and we have different functional requirements working from home. We look at these challenges and there’s opportunities there. If you can pick up the technical skill, your organization can start leveraging you. Databases is typically one skill your organization is short on. There’s never enough people who could answer questions efficiently.
You can be into marketing or customer service or lots of different domains and leverage that to help the organization capture better data. Often my best advice is don’t throw away what you already have. If you work in Best Buy, great. You know a lot about retail, you know a lot about things they do, you know a lot about that customer experience. How can you marry that with these new skills you’re learning to find the right job? It may not be at Best Buy, but in that retail sector where you’ve got all this domain experience.
A Critical Foundation for Cybersecurity and IT Jobs
In our first MicroBachelors program, Computer Science Fundamentals, you learn three things. 1) Programming, and we program in Python; 2) operating systems, so we spend five weeks going through the structures that operating systems use; and 3) networking. Databases builds on top of that because we learn programming in a different way: non-procedural programming.
Did you know? MicroBachelors programs are designed to be stackable. Each program comes with real, transferable college credit that, combined with previous credit you may have already collected or plan to get in the future, puts you on a path to earning a full bachelor’s degree.
Students with these core skills across these two MicroBachelors can go into more computer science areas, information, technology areas, cybersecurity areas. These skills are really the foundation of almost any of these technical disciplines. [For example,] to have any discussion about cybersecurity, you really need to know all of these areas we have in these first two MicroBachelors programs. You need to understand programming to understand the vulnerabilities we leave behind us. You need to understand the operating system to understand how the host in the machine has vulnerabilities. You need to understand networking and how we transmit data and the vulnerabilities there. Then in databases, that’s how we store critical information and that’s often where those vulnerabilities are exploited. It’s really a critical part going into cybersecurity. It’s a critical part going in information technology, because these are the systems we maintain. It’s a critical knowledge base if you’re going to computer science because now you’re going to build on top of this with things like artificial intelligence, machine learning, more software engineering, or core programming, those sorts of topics.

Description
Which programming language is often seen as a badge of honor among software developers? C++
Which programming language can you learn that when added to your resume, will often get you a job interview? C++
Which programming language is routinely ranked in the top 5 programming languages by popularity, and been consistently in the top 10 for close to 20 years? C++
Why you should learn C++
Much, if not most of software written today is still written in C++ and this has been the case for many, many years.
Not only is C++ popular, it is also a very relevant language. If you go to GitHub you will see that there are a huge number of active C++ repositories and C++ is also extremely active on stack overflow.
There are many, many leading software titles written entirely or partly in C++. These include the Windows, Linux and Mac OSX operating systems!
Many of the Adobe products such as Photoshop and Illustrator, the mySQL and MongoDB database engines, and many many more are written in C++.
Leading tech companies use C++ for many of their products and internal research and development. These include Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, PayPal, Google, Facebook, Oracle and many more.
Can you see how learning C++ will open up more career opportunities for you?
If more professional companies are using C++, it stands to reason that there is going to be more of a demand for C++ programmers.
But the main reason programmers should probably learn C++ is because it is so powerful!
What do I mean by powerful?
C++ is super fast, and is a general purpose programming language that supports both procedure and object oriented programming making it very flexible.
It can scale easily. And it can be portable as well.
C++ can do many things that other languages just can’t.
That’s why nearly every major language has a way to interface with code written in C++.
Since C++ has influenced so many languages, if you know C++ you’ll likely see elements from C++ in new languages you learn.
How can a beginner learn C++ ?
Find a good course, taught by an instructor with many years of experience in C++ is critical, as is the need for the instructor to have the necessary skills to be able to teach you the language.
Frank Mitropolous, the instructor in this course has been using C++ for over 2 decades and has taught students in both university courses and industry training courses. He even worked on a C++ compiler development project while he was in industry.
So not only will you be learning C++ from an expert C++ programmer, but you’ll also be taught by an instructor who has successfully taught at university level for many years.
As a result, you can take this course with confidence, knowing that you will learn C++ the right way, and in the shortest possible timeframe.
Which version of C++ should I learn?
C++ has had many version releases and updates over the years. It’s a sad fact that most C++ courses do not teach Modern C++, but focus on old, obsolete versions of C++.
Frank teaches you Modern C++ (specifically C++ 11 and C++ 14).
Learn C++ the right way, with Modern C++, as taught by Frank in this course.
Is C++ difficult to learn?
With all the power and flexibility of C++ comes complexity.
There is no question that C++ is one of the most complex programming languages out there.
But with the right instructor, and the right training, you really can get up to speed with C++ quickly, and that’s what this course is all about.
What will I learn in this course?
The course assumes no previous experience with C++ (or even programming in general), and you will end up with the skills to create your own programs in C++.
Key topics covered include.
* Looping with while, do/while for, range-based for statements and recursion * Performing calculations and displaying results * Functions * Pointers * Using existing classes and creating objects * Creating your own classes * Using Basic Standard Template Library classes such as Vector * Constructors and Destructors * Copy and Move semantics including Copy constructors, Move constructors, and copy and move assignment * How to overload operators * Using inheritance and class hierarchies * Using Polymorphic functions and dynamic binding * Using smart pointers * Using stream I/O * An introduction to the C++ STL * An introduction to Exception Handling * And much more.
How is this C++ course different to other courses?
You will learn Modern C++, for one. Many, perhaps most other courses on Udemy teach you old, obsolete versions of C++. If you are going to learn C++, it’s imperitive that you learn the Modern version to maximise your career opportunities and to ensure your skills are up to date.
The course format includes theory and concepts which are then reinforced with live code examples. Often the C++ debugger is used to step through code and analyze variables to better understand the behavior of C++. The instructor also uses a pen tablet to write on the screen and provide even more visual explanations.
You won’t find better C++ training anywhere, and you will struggle to find someone with as much industry and training experience than your instructor Frank has.
What do I get out of learning C++ ?
More career options for one! C++ is one of the most popular programming languages used in games development. It’s also heavily used in embedded applications. Your investment in time in learning C++ will reward you time and time again with more pay, and more opportunities, and frankly, more fun!

How to be joined by the company easily? You can find the answer to your question in this post. Read the following.
Updated March 12, 2020
When you’re job searching, employers will be looking for evidence that you possess the right strengths to get the job done as they screen your resumes, cover letters, and job applications. You will also be asked questions aimed at uncovering your strengths during job interviews.
What are employers looking for? Which are the best strengths to share with employers when you're job hunting?
Keep in mind that the lists will vary based on the job for which you're applying and the employer's job requirements.
It is a good idea to have a list of strengths, as well as a list of weaknesses, ready to share with the hiring manager.
1. How to Use This List of Strengths
You can use this list of strength words throughout your job search process. First, look through the list and circle the strengths that you possess, and that is also important for the job you’re applying for. You can look back at the job listing to get a sense of the job requirements. Take a few minutes to match your qualifications to the requirements listed in the job posting.
Once you have a list of words that match both the job and your set of strengths, you can use these words in your resume. In the description of your work history, you can include some of these keywords.
You can also use these words in your cover letter. In the body of your letter, try to mention one or two of these strengths, giving a specific example of a time when you demonstrated each of them in the workplace.
Finally, you can use these words in an interview. Make sure you have at least one example of a time you used each strength to achieve results in your work, volunteer, and/or academic experiences.
In your interview, be prepared to mention the situations involved, the actions that you took, and the results that you generated while applying your key strengths. This is known as the STAR (situation, task, action, response) interview response technique. You can use this to highlight your most relevant strengths during job interviews.
2. Top Strengths Employers Seek in Employees
Analytics
Analytical skills refer to your ability to collect and analyze information, problem-solve, and make decisions. Nearly every job requires this kind of critical thinking on some level. An employee’s analytical strength can help solve a company’s problems and increase its productivity. Showing the employer that you can gather and analyze information, resolve problems, and make decisions will enhance your candidacy.
Assessing the needs and preferences of customers
Assessing outcomes
Creative thinking
Designing innovative products
Efficiency
Good judgment
Innovation

Communication
Written and oral communication skills are critical for almost any job. Whether you are giving a presentation, talking on the phone to a client, or emailing a colleague, you need to be able to communicate effectively and appropriately.
Your communication skills will be evaluated in the written materials you use to apply for a job. The hiring manager will also focus on how well you handle the interview and communicate with the people you meet during the hiring process.
Employers will also want to see that you can effectively engage with people. They want to know that you can listen to others, respond to their concerns, and demonstrate empathy for others. These interpersonal skills are particularly important in jobs that involve customer service or working on a team. You can demonstrate these skills in the way you engage with the interviewer.
Business storytelling
Calming agitated clients
Clearly conveying features and benefits of products/services
Composing engaging copy for websites
Creating compelling presentation slides
Friendly and engaging personality
Likability

Dependability
Employers want to know they have employees they can depend on, and who are responsible and professional. You need to be able to show up on time and get your work done by designated deadlines. When asked about dependability, good examples to share are ones that describe how you were able to meet project deadlines or how you have a great track record of attendance and timeliness.
You can also demonstrate your professionalism in the way you present yourself during the interview. Be sure to arrive early and dress professionally. Look the employer in the eye, and maintain good posture. These small details will show the employer that you are a dedicated, responsible candidate.

IBM, Marriott and Mickey Mouse Take On Tech’s Favorite Law
WASHINGTON — Disney and its powerful trade association have fought to stop the law’s spread abroad.
Marriott has asked Congress to amend the law.
IBM has a plan to slim it down.
An unusual constellation of powerful companies and industries are fighting to weaken Big Tech by limiting the reach of one of its most sacred laws.
Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996 has helped Facebook, Google and YouTube grow into giants by holding only the people who post the billions of pieces of content on their services responsible for libel or other legal issues.
Former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. said in a recent interview that Section 230 should be immediately “revoked.” Senators Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican, and Brian Schatz, a Hawaii Democrat, are drafting bills that could increase the tech companies’ liability. The Justice Department is conducting a review of the law.
“People are either mad at tech companies and, legitimately in some cases, want to constrain their power for a lot of reasons,” said Daphne Keller, a professor at Stanford Law School who used to be a lawyer for Google. “Or companies are competing with tech companies and want to constrain their power for competitive reasons.
“And a lot of those reasons are really complicated, but the easiest lever to hurt tech companies that a lot of people see is 230.”
So far, the companies critical of the law have had mixed success with their lobbying. In 2018, Congress gave victims and prosecutors more power to sue websites that knowingly aided sex trafficking. The law passed with support from companies like Disney, Oracle and IBM.
But the recent trade pact with Canada and Mexico contained Section 230-like protections, potentially locking in tech-friendly rules abroad.
Now critics of Section 230 are focused on pushing to keep similar language out of future trade pacts. A handout distributed by Disney’s lobbyists last year warned Congress that trade deals with the provision would make it difficult for Congress to change the law in a way that improved the internet.
“On an almost weekly basis,” the handout said, “additional concerns are being raised: illegal opioid sales, spread of terrorist propaganda, foreign government election meddling, spread of material and tools that help pedophiles connect.”
Companies like Google and Facebook say that without Section 230 protections, building a business that gives individuals a platform for their content online would be impossible. They say it also shields online platforms from lawsuits when they police criminal or distasteful content.
Silicon Valley can employ significant resources to make its case. Google and Facebook spend millions a year on federal lobbying and are regular donors to outside policy groups. Their allies on Capitol Hill, like Senator Ron Wyden, Democrat of Oregon, have defended the law.
Michael Beckerman, the president of the Internet Association, an industry group whose members include Google and Facebook, said Section 230 was “foundational to almost everything people do online.”
“It enables products and services that consumers love and rely upon every day,” Mr. Beckerman said in a statement.
While criticism of Section 230 had mounted for years, the coalition of corporate interests questioning the value of the protections took root in late 2017 when Disney and 21st Century Fox backed the bill allowing lawsuits against web platforms for knowingly facilitating sex trafficking.
“I had never seen them getting involved in any Section 230 issues before,” said Jeff Kosseff, a lawyer who wrote a book about the law.
Now, hotel companies worry about Airbnb’s use of Section 230 in lawsuits seeking to block local ordinances regulating home-sharing platforms. Judges have ruled against the company in many of those cases.
The Washington lobbying group that represents companies like Marriott, Hilton and Hyatt has backed a bill that would amend Section 230 so it didn’t apply to home-rental services in many cases.
Airbnb declined to comment.
IBM, which like other enterprise software providers is trying to distance itself from businesses like Facebook, has supported adjusting Section 230 so that companies must take “reasonable care” to keep unlawful uses of their platforms in check. The proposal would apply to companies that not only hosted information but also made it available to the public. That means it would cover a consumer service like Instagram but not to a cloud computing provider like IBM.
The Motion Picture Association and the News Media Alliance, a group that lobbies for news organizations, have urged the Trump administration not to allow the protections in a future trade deal with Britain. The film group’s concern is that it could make copyright enforcement more difficult. (The New York Times is a member of the News Media Alliance.)
Many of the consumer groups that have been critical of Section 230 don’t share the companies’ motivations. But they welcome the help from the companies, which have vast lobbying networks and the ability to get a meeting with the right aide at just the right time.
Gretchen Peters, who leads the Alliance to Counter Crime Online, a group critical of Section 230, said her small organization was spread thin. If “somebody else, like the Disney folks or the hotel folks,” set up a meeting, she said, “I’ll come along.”

AEROSPACE Engineering Interview Questions 11. What Is The Testing Done In Aerospace Engineering? The testing of small rocket engines and entails development by researching on aerospace. They are responsible to perform and experiment on laboratory facility, which is dedicated to aerospace. One should be capable of solving problems by applying knowledge by solving problem of the research done. They will be working with technical team of researchers and they should have ability handle projects alone. 12. How Would You Handle If Your Co-worker Were Not Cooperating With You? Talk to your co-worker directly and explain him that you are having a problem working with him and make him understand the situation, if he is not willing to listen or not cooperating, then direct the issue to chief pilot. 13. What Would You Do If Your Captain Were Not Following The Instructions Properly? Refer to your plane manual, discuss the same with your client, and ensure you make him understand the procedures and rules. If he does not respond, you will call your concerned aircraft officer at the airport, escalate, and make sure your voice frequency is recorded. 14. When Can One Deviate From Any Flight Rules And Regulations? Chief Pilot in command can deviate from rules and regulations during emergency period; he can do it to get the plane back to the normalcy or to meet the expected requirement of the emergency. 15. What If You Loose The Medical Round Or Interview For Your Pilot Position? One should always have a career back up plan, incase if your medical examination results are not positive, you could get into training department for pilots, or you could pursue your interests from your previous experience or education. 16. What Are The Disadvantages Of Being In Aerospace Industry? The biggest disadvantage is that it is a relatively small field, and the number of companies in the field is getting smaller (lots of mergers between big companies in the news lately). In addition, this used to be a field where America had 90% of the market, but now foreign companies are catching up; this means that American companies are streamlining their organizations in order to be competitive. 17. What Interests And Abilities Would Help Some One As An Aerospace Engineer? Successful aerospace engineers need lots of curiosity, problem solving skills, organizational skills, written and oral communication skills, people skills (as in leading and participating in teams) and computer skills. There are no physical requirements; in fact, we have many engineers with disabilities and it is not an issue for their job performance 18. How Important Are Aeronautical Engineers To Today's Society? Aeronautical Engineers the aircraft people use for business and holidaying would not be in the sky, it cannot be contested that society depends heavily on travel via aircraft. Aeronautical Engineer will provide the solution to increase overall aircraft efficiency, thereby helping to drive down the levels of emissions current aircraft produce. Aeronautical Engineers also help put the satellites in to space, the satellites we rely on for weather information, geospatial mapping data, environmental monitoring, telecommunications, and research. Therefore, in answer to the aerospace engineering plays a major role in society, producing and developing a lot of the technology we rely on heavily 19. How Many Types Of Emergency Landings Are There And Explain? There are three types of emergency landings like: * Forced landing : This is a situation where Air Craft engine fails and Pilot is forced to land the plane in the nearest airport. * Precautionary landing : This is used when Pilot faces a problem due to severe weather conditions, or being lost in the air space traffic or due to lack of fuel or expecting an engine trouble. * Ditching : This is when where Pilot cannot avoid this situation but to just land on water, which is safer than air bound. 20. How Important Is To Get The Passengers Switch Off The Mobile Phones And Laptops During Land Off. What Could Be The Consequences? It is very important to check if laptop and mobile phones are switched off or not, as the consequences can be, bad.because interference of aircraft communication devices and electronic devices interfere with each other and there could be chances of not proper landing. Therefore, it is highly recommended electronic and communication devices should be switched off during take off and landing 21. How Would You Handle The Extreme Pressure During Emergency If You Know That Plane Is Not Safe And It Might Crash Any Time? Few professions demand you to be selfless, and our respective clients would be the most important thing, that is why customer service differs completely in such fields compared to other streams. For example, Doctors, Lawyers, Pilots these are the professions where employee saving your customer is the up most important thing. Therefore, as a Pilot we should understand our duties and responsibilities and will ensure that whatever panic situation we could be in, we will continue to deliver our duties until the end and ensure passengers are safe all times. Simultaneously I will own the full responsibility of landing the Air Craft safe and in the steady position. 22. Can You Miss The Clearance Limit And Loose The Commands From The Air Craft Officer? Yes, there is a policy and procedure to be followed for the missing clearance limit problem, so a Pilot can leave and reach a different altitude for sometime within the limit and should come back to the proper clearance limit once things are in control. This time limit is only as per the procedure in the manual. 23. You Are About To Take Off The Plane In Few Seconds And A Catastrophic Engine Fails, And Your Captain Tells You Not To Take Off And Just Stay In The Center Line. What Would You Do? Once the take off procedure has started, it is no longer safe to stop the plane from take off. Instead, it is better to continue with the take off and its best handled in the air. All certified aircraft under 25 can run without an engine and there is no problem related to it for take off or to for plane landing. It is actually far better idea to handle the problem in the air than to face the situation on the runway, when plane engine is in high speed. 24. Without Air Traffic Control, What Is The Minimum Descent Rate You Can Descend The Plane? A Pilot can descend up to 500 bare minimum, without informing the ATC (Air Traffic Controller) and this is only during an exceptional cases. However, it is always better to be in regular touch with the Air Traffic Controller and to keep him informed about the descent rate. This will not have any traffic problems during landing in the runway. 25. When A Pilot Is Assigned A Speed, How Much Can One Deviate From That Speed? Complying and following the actual speed adjustment policies, a pilot can run and indicate plus or minus 10 knots or 0.02 Mach number of specified speed. It is always better to keep the land air officer in the loop before adjusting the air speed. Exceptions are always there to meet the emergency requirement. 26. Are You Prepared For Unexpected Turbulence? Yes, given the proper training am confident that I will be able to handle the turbulence and will drive the plane in the correct altitude. 27. What Is The Testing Done In Aerospace Engineering? The testing of small rocket engines and entails development by researching on aerospace. They are responsible to perform and experiment on laboratory facility which is dedicated to aerospace. One should be capable of solving problems by applying knowledge by solving problem of the research done. They will be working with technical team of researchers and they should have ability handle projects alone. 28. What Will Be The Responsibility Of The Spacecraft Operations, dynamics And Controls? People working on these areas as a aerospace engineers should have familiarity and exposure to NASTRAN and MATLAB with knowledge on space environment and modeling of flexible dynamics. These aerospace engineers will be responsible to work in the areas of structural control, momentum control, line of sight (LOS), spacecraft mission design, control of space boards payloads, operational engineering. 29. What Is The Requirement To Become A Professional Engineer (pe) In The Field Of Aerospace? Professional Engineer license is required for people who aspire to go in as officially approved engineer. The design specification is done by self employed people or working in small business. General aerospace engineers work for government or for big companies and hence few people are not very keen on becoming PE's. To become a PE one has to pass an exam on fundamentals of engineering which takes alot of hours to gruel and work under a licensed PE for about four years. Also they have to grow through a principle and practice of engineering exam which requires about 8 hours. 30. What Made You Choose Aerospace Engineer Line As Your Career? In aerospace engineering there are lots of interesting topics which include rocketry, aero planes, Lego's. As a school student I started sketching for future aircraft and space craft, military aircraft. I analyzed the importance of space travel, aviation history, and aerospace industry and hence decided to get into this field.
