This is the 77th installment of 'Since I've Been Gone'. Taken on the same night of the last post while on my Iowa hitch with @americanconservationexperience, I caught this tiny crawling water beetle that I believe is 'Peltodytes edentulus', but if someone wants to correct me, be my guest. Like others of their family, they are clumsy swimmers compared to driving beetles, not to mention not as well studied, which is surprising given how great they are to look at. #animal #animals #wildlife #iowawildlife #nature #iowanature #invertebrate #invertebrates #fauna #imago #iowainsects #insect #insects #insectagram #aquaticinsect #aquaticinsects #beetle #beetles #waterbeetle #crawlingwaterbeetle #crawlingwaterbeetles #animalia #arthropod #arthropods #arthropoda #insecta #hemiptera #nepidae #ranatra #ranatrafusca (at YMCA Camp Wapsie) https://www.instagram.com/p/CWMVBXxKCFP/?utm_medium=tumblr

You would be forgiven for believing this was a picture of an alien lifeform. In fact, it's the shed Exoskeleton of a Dragonfly (Suborder Anisoptera) that I found at Algonquin Provincial Park in July 2017. The creature that wore this skin was a denizen of freshwater, a hunter of other insect larvae or even tadpoles or small fish. It then emerged from the water and broke out of this shell to continue its life as an aerial predator, taking to the skies with 4 buzzing wings. Although it's a creature of our planet, and a fairly common one too, it is an incredible, complex, and beautiful animal that sheds some light into the world of insects. . . . . . . . #nature #ontario #naturalhistory #odonata #algonquinprovincialpark #algonquinpark #ontarioprovincialparks #ontarioparks #dragonfliesofinstagram #dragonflyexoskeleton #exoskeleton #exuvia #metamorphosis #dragonflylarvae #insects_of_our_world #insectlovers #insectlife #freshwaterecology #aquaticinsects #aquaticinsect #odonatology #entomologyphotography (at Algonquin Provincial Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCbXAHkHzW8/?igshid=vq4tf5i0ut1n

Diving Beetle (Genus Dytiscus) at my parents' farm last weekend. These Beetles spend both larval and adult life stages in water and both larvae and adults are predators of other aquatic insects. The individual in the photograph is a female, which can be noted by the grooves on its elytra (hardened outer wings). This female was possibly dispersing from a water source after mating, to move into another. . . . . . . #nature #ontario #dytiscus #dytiscidae #divingbeetle #beetle #beetlesofinstagram #macrophotography #naturephotography #backyardwildlife #norfolkcounty #norfolkwild #blognorfolk #insects_of_our_world #insect #coleoptera #aquaticinsects #invert_macro #insectguru (at Norfolk County, Ontario) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_AD_Vog-E8/?igshid=u8bc7jz4tpwc

This is the 87th installment of 'Since I've Been Gone'. Taken on the same night as the previous post while I was on my Iowa hitch with @americanconservationexperience, I found what I could only describe as 'Tropisternus sp.' Sucks that I don't know what species of hydrophilid I have here. I also ended up losing it while filming. I provided extra pictures for IDing. #animal #animals #wildlife #insect #insects #insectagram #iowawildlife #iowanature #nature #fauna #invertebrate #invertebrates #aquaticinsects #aquaticinsect #beetle #beetles #imago #waterscavengerbeetle #waterscavengerbeetles #aquaticbeetles #aquaticbeetle #animalia #arthropod #arthropods #arthropoda #insecta #coleoptera #hydrophilidae #hydrophilinae #tropisternus (at YMCA Camp Wapsie) https://www.instagram.com/p/CWOlYuEKFRo/?utm_medium=tumblr

This is the 45th installment of 'Since I've Been Gone'. Taken on the same day as the previous post while I was on my Iowa hitch with @americanconservationexperience, nightfall was arriving and all sorts of critters make themselves known. Originally struggling in the water, I rescued this giant mayfly (Hexagenia limbata) so I could get a picture of it. This is the imago form, of which the main purpose is to fly for a mate and do so before their brief lives end. It's assumed that mayflies live brief lives based on their imago lifespan, but the instar, or naiad, form is in fact where the majority of their life is spent. For this genus at least, they are fully aquatic and live in U-shaped burrows within the sediment of slow-moving bodies of water filter-feeding on detritus. Thanks Doc Kennedy @unt for teaching me all of this. #animal #animals #nature #insect #insects #insectagram #iowainsects #aquaticinsects #aquaticinsect #mayfly #mayflies #burrowingmayfly #iowanature #wildlife #fauna #imago #iowawildlife #arthropods #arthropod #animalia #arthropoda #insecta #pterygota #ephemeroptera #ephemeridae #ephemeroidea #hexagenia #hexagenialimbata #giantmayfly #aceinspires (at YMCA Camp Wapsie) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVOc_aRqo0O/?utm_medium=tumblr
