How Ray Got His Groove Back by Aristide and Bone, due South, Fraser/RayK
A quintessential due South RayK fic and a classic of the fandom for a reason! I knew when I started this whole crazy adventure of binding fanfic that I wanted to make hard copies of things across the fandoms that have been a part of over the years, and due South will always have a special place in my heart, since that's where I met my wife.
I'm to be able to share this fanbind with @the-cimmerians just in time for Fanfic Writers' Appreciation Day! (And thanks to @renegadeguild for encouraging us all to share with the authors we love this day in particular.)
The title of How Ray Got His Groove Back is a riff on the movie How Stella Got Her Groove Back, and the fic even has its own fanlore page. Because it was imported into AO3 from another archive as part of an Open Doors initiative, you too can enjoy some genuine vintage formatting as part of the reading experience! (Get your pre-AO3 mailing list flashbacks right here...)
The spine is Duo magpie bookcloth, and marbled paper found by chance in a household gift shop last winter (I wish they'd restocked it!), and the lettering is stencilled acrylic paint.

I leaned into the romance novel vibe for the typesetting, using the notorious yellow paper of the great paper misorder of 2023 for an aged paperback vibe, and a flowery frame for the cover. Gelli-plate printed endpapers, and a hand-sewn double-core endband in hot pink and purple thread to match.
And about that marbled paper and the stencilled title... this was the book where I discovered that the other paper I had stencilled on with no problems (mulberry fibre Lokta paper, it's lovely) is the exception rather than the rule, and some emergency repairs were needed when the stencil vinyl started to pull up the paper. I did my best with some paint and a fine-tipped maker and a pencil, but hoo boy. We won't be trying that again with this paper.

I'm glad to have this piece of personal fandom history, and also to say, happy Fanfic Writers' Appreciation Day, Aristide & Bone!

Character Story: IV — The Chamber of Silence
❛ She had sculpted so many gods with gentle hands. But none came for her in the end. ❜
The fall was not graceful.
Aristides’ fragile frame struck the stone floor of the palace courtyard with a sickening finality. Bone cracked, pain bloomed—and then came the silence. Her legs, once barely strong enough to carry her weight, were shattered beyond repair. Servants gasped, nobles turned away. Her family said nothing. Mydeimos could only watch. Unable to do anything to help his sister. It was too late for her.
There was no physician summoned. No prayers offered to Nikador, the Titan they so fervently worshipped. No warmth. No tears.
Only a quiet order: ❛ She is no longer of use. Take her to the old chambers. Let the gods decide her fate. ❜
The chamber they chose for her was one of dust and memory, long forgotten beneath the marble corridors of Castrum Kremnos. There, on a crumbling pallet beneath faded banners of war, Aristides waited—for healing, for mercy, for anyone. None came.
Her art tools lay untouched in the corner, a cruel reminder of hands that could no longer reach them. Time blurred. The pain remained. Her once-ethereal voice faded into brittle silence, and her body, curled in agony, became a sculpture itself—frozen and forsaken.
She did not rage.
She did not cry.
And in that cold, empty room, where no warriors knelt and no hymns were sung, with her brother sitting beside her, hoping she would return, Aristides of House Kremnos died. Not as a princess. Not as a prodigy. But as a discarded thing, swallowed by shadows deeper than stone.
Yet the stillness did not claim her soul.
Only reshaped it.

Mr. Malfoy was losing his patience, although nobody would have been able to tell by looking at him. He sat as still and poised as a child at school, dressed in his muggle best, in a room well out of sight of all the other bidders going home. They filed out past the closed door, some stumbling drunk, some laughing, all of them loud and uncouth. Muggles. One by one they all had left within the hour, so when he heard the trapdoor open and steps approaching from the other room, he knew exactly who it was.
“What took you so long?” he thundered at the figure that appeared.
“Pardonnez-moi, monsieur,” said Donatien, bowing deeply in the doorway.
“Bring it over, you incompetent cur.”
The young man stepped forward, moving more slowly than Malfoy would’ve liked, and with a deliberately mocking sort of grace, presented the package. Malfoy took it from him, brow cocked coldly at Donatien. The boy lacked his usual obeisance. He even dared to smile at him. It bothered Septimus, but not enough to distract him from the book. Donatien stood back and to his left, out of sight.
“You’re rather quiet. Done all your croaking for the day? Irksome frog.”
Donatien did not respond, not that he needed to. Mr. Malfoy made short work of the wrappings, tearing off the carefully tied bow and throwing it, velvet wrap and all, onto the ground.
“Petty frills and ostentations. Is this what they wasted your time with downstairs?”
“Oui, monsieur.”
Malfoy grunted something scathing as his dry hands fumbled with the box.
“You’ve been speaking English too often on my account,” he said. “That accent sounds quite wrong, boy. You haven’t forgotten your own language, have you?”
He was too distracted afterwards to pay any attention to Donatien, although he was not so insensitive as not to feel a wave of anger from above his shoulder. None of it mattered, not more than Malfoy’s own anger at being kept waiting on what was the most important night of at least the last ten years for him. His hands were nearly shaking.
It had taken years to track down this book, one of the very last of its kind. The other two were well out of his reach, and this one would’ve been as well if not for his careful planning. Finding out about the Baron was easy, but making his way into his secret auctions took more skill than any muggle endeavour was worth. If not for his connections among vampires he might never have made it this far, and to his great fortune Ambrogio far respected wizards above his non-magical peers. And now he’d finally made it. He had in his grasp, in his old lap, that book the whispers of which caused shivers to run down his spine when he’d first heard of it some thirty years ago.
The lid clattered to the floor and the book was in his hands. At last.
He opened it, fingers almost trembling and read the title page.
“There you are, my beauty,” Malfoy whispered. From over his shoulder, Donatien could see his bone-white fingers trace the frontispiece. The inky devil on its throne waved silently at him, small as the palm of his hand yet dignified and cold. Each line, a thread of darkness pressed into the white that centuries had barely touched. Above, Delomelanicon. Below, Aristide Torchia & LCF. “Mine… At last.”
It was a marvel. At every turn of the page a touch of magic. The illustrations, headings, footnotes, the text that went from edge to edge in neat stout paragraphs in Latin, it made for an intimidating piece of art that hid the foulest magic. It was, under Donatien’s admiring gaze, like a nightmare given birth.
The air around them stilled. Mr. Malfoy read under his breath a spell from a page he paused upon at random but he was too frightened to actually cast it, and as he held it in his hands he had the distinct impression that he was close to dropping the book to the ground. It was a dizzying experience as if he could sense the very turning of the earth or the rushing of his blood inside him... Somehow, he knew the book wished to be placed upon an illuminated surface, shared, and read. It took a great deal of self-control to close it again and the sound of its shut maw echoed through the room. He sighed and closed his tired eyes, and inwardly felt grateful that he’d come all the way to buy the book himself rather than send his useless son. Abraxas was too busy throwing wasteful dinner parties for his friends — not that reading had ever been his forte.
“Shall I take it from you, sir?”
“I did not ask for your help!”
Donatien remained quiet for a moment.
“But yes. Take it,” said the wizard, caressing the book on his lap one last time.
Then, with some reluctance, he held it up. Donatien took the book with care, lifting it from the old wizard’s hand and into his possession. Mr. Malfoy didn’t even have time to regret it for a satisfied peal of laughter followed and the old wizard felt the unmistakable press of a wand tip at his temple.
II
Tom looked into Mr. Malfoy’s eyes like a baker checking a bun in the oven. He smiled at what he saw. Complete and utter contentment was there together with the usual arrogance, all in a mind that presently tried to catch up to its reality.
“Thank you, Donatien. You may go on ahead. Place it in my suitcase at the hotel.”
By now the Polyjuice potion had faded away and all of Tom’s features were his own, but that made no difference to Mr. Malfoy, not in the state he was in. He’d be lucky if that Obliviate didn’t leave his brains scrambled forever, but Tom had been planning for a while now exactly what memories to alter and which to wipe.
“Yes, sir,” he said with an overly enthusiastic bow.
His, finally his, and even old Malfoy didn’t stand in his way anymore. He’d eliminated everyone else who could — Oso, the Baron, even Donatien and Clement who foolishly thought they could have robbed a man like Malfoy themselves. Tom was so pleased with himself that it felt a real shame to give this book away to somebody like Burke, not after all the trouble he went through. But there was enough time left to make some arrangements.
With a chuckle, he turned to leave the room, book safe in hand. It had been given to him freely, after all. No spell could prevent him from taking it out of the building now… And by the time Malfoy returned to England empty-handed and realised something was wrong, the book would be far from Italy as well. Its protection spell, however cleverly designed, was no match for Tom’s designs.
But his smile died when he looked up and saw who was standing in the doorway. In her fingers, hanging limply, was a thin piece of paper — the receipt he had forgotten to take.
“Oh, fuck.”
Confusion, fear, panic. His heart dropped at the prospect of having to Obliviate her as well. She saw him still wearing Donatien’s clothes, saw him hold his wand and cast the spell, witnessed the unravelling of Mr. Malfoy’s mind — which was probably why she hadn’t said a word the whole time she was there. Now, she looked at him in innocent and sweet confusion and with every fevered heartbeat he could see her putting it all together in her head. She wasn’t just an ordinary muggle, after all. Her profession exposed her many times to the notion that magic was real… And now she’d seen it.
But instead of stepping away, pointing a finger accusingly at him and calling him ‘witch’, or even any hint of fear — instead of all of that, she came to him, admiration in her eyes. She looked at the enchanted Mr. Malfoy, his gaze no more intelligent than that of a child’s, and then at Tom again. He was breathless for long moments, and for the first time in a while felt… scared. Just as he’d been in fifth year when Dumbledore refused to let him stay at Hogwarts over Christmas. He felt the same violent surges as then, his whole self reduced to a volatile point. He was so distracted that he could hardly read what was going on behind her eyes.
“Tom,” she said with an uncertain smile.
“Yes?” he said, a little roughly.
“Why are you wearing Donatien’s clothes?”
“He, erm, let me b-borrow them?”
“And… did Mr. Malfoy let you borrow his book as well?”
“Yes, as a matter of fact. I’m… looking after it for him.”
“Are you?” she said, her eyes lit with playfulness. She had the same sugary tone she did when they came across a stray cat and she wanted to entice it close enough to pet.
“I will see it all the way to England, in fact.”
There, he said. It was a naked challenge, and Tom could see her smile fade with the meaning of it. Between them, Mr. Malfoy groaned and rested his head in his hands as the effects of the memory charm finished taking root inside his mind.
“What’s wrong with him?”
“Headache,” said Tom, and he quickly grabbed her by the elbow and pulled her away. “We shall fetch you a cup of tea, Mr. Malfoy.”
“Sod the tea,” growled the old wizard, his voice strained with the effort to keep his dinner down. “Where’s my wand?”
Tom shut the door behind them but not fast enough. The sound of dry heaving came through, muffled and confused, and in the quiet of the empty shop it seemed all the louder. The question was already in her eyes, which quickly flitted to the wand he held. Even though it was no use, he tucked it behind him.
“I knew that wasn't just a good luck charm!”
“Listen, you —”
He wanted to say that she was just imagining things but it would have been a stupid thing to do. There was no fooling her, not with everything that happened right before her eyes… Tom sighed, frustrated by his own stupidity and carelessness.
“I, what?”
He knew the only solution was to Obliviate her too… But the longer he waited, the harder it was to do. She was beautiful, standing so close, looking up at him, demanding that he share everything with her. Her hair was messier than when he’d kissed her last — still disguised as Donatien — her hands were dark with dust, her shirt unbuttoned at the top after a long night of working. He could see her blushing still, probably piecing it together and realising what he’d done. She may not have known how, but finding him in the French boy’s clothes cast the shrowd of guilt over him. Tom felt suffocated by it. And Mr. Malfoy… One didn’t need to know a lot of magic to figure out what happened there. He could hardly look at her — the accusations there, the fear, and memories of how his mother died rushing through his mind.
But when he looked into her eyes with all the shame of a child caught stealing sweets, and the wide expectant shine of them made a certain hope grow in his chest, wild and rampant like a rose bush.
“You did something to Mr. Malfoy, didn’t you?”
Tom kept quiet, fingers growing stiff around the wand, and waiting, waiting for her shock to turn to terror.
“D-did you… curse him or something?”
“Not… exactly.”
From behind the closed door, another wave of retching could be heard. She shifted her weight from one foot to the other, gaze drifting, mind working fervently behind those tired eyes as she took in his clothes again — the awkward fit of them now that he didn’t have Donatien’s body — and the book in his hand and the other arm twisted around his back trying to hide that stick of his. She looked into his eyes reading things there he dared not even guess at and licked her lips to speak.
“Are you a… erm, a magician?”
In her voice was all the innocent wonder his own voice had one rainy day at Wool’s.
“The, ahem, the proper term is ‘wizard’.”
Was she going to laugh? She didn’t laugh. He feared she might scream instead but she didn’t do that either. Between them hung only a heavy silence, his blood cold, his body stiff, a slave in waiting for what she had to say.
“Tom!” she gasped. “That’s amazing!”
He looked into her eyes and frowned but seeing her smile at him made dangerous emotions grow. His brows smoothed and his lips curled at the edges and he felt on the verge of picking her up in his arms and twirling her. She’d looked at him many times in joy and sorrow but never quite like that — like she wanted to hug him and kiss him and crawl into his soul.
Was that his heart set aflutter or someone knocking on the door?
They turned together and hurried toward the sound — it was coming from the entrance. They found Frederico there, behind the glass, looking terrified and tired with his coat thrown messily about him as if he’d just been roused from bed. A taxi was waiting behind him.
“Open up!” he shouted. “The Baron’s dead!”
III
The Baron was found dead, or parts of him were. It was difficult to tell because his library had been set on fire with him inside of it. His secretary, Berit, was nowhere to be found. As Fred rambled on Mr. Malfoy stumbled past them, still dazed and somewhat angry that Donatien had gone to the hotel ahead of him. Without a word, he took Fred’s taxi and drove off, leaving them stranded at the shop.
The Carabinieri had tried to reach both her and Tom at their homes, but as they were at the auction all night they were forced to search further afield, and so reached out to Fred.
And now all poor Fred could do was tell them what had happened over an unsweetened cup of coffee. Tom took care to hide the Delomelanicon at the first opportunity while she sat Fred down and started brewing a fresh pot.
“They… they said arson was suspected.”
“But who could —”
“He had many enemies.”
“Yes, Tom, but arsonists?!”
“No, no, no, the Baron was a good person,” said Fred. “And his enemies are good people too! None of them would burn a library.”
“They could’ve stolen books before setting the place on fire,” said Tom as sat down, straddling the chair backwards.
“Yes, but so many books? Hardcopies too and leather-bound volumes?” said Fred. “No, no, no… They weigh too much, and there’s too many of them.”
She brushed a hand across his back as she placed the cup of coffee in front of him, then went to give one to Tom. “What else did the police say, Freddy?”
“That, erm, they can’t find Mrs. Boveri. They couldn’t find you two either, but I told them… I told them…”
“Will we have to speak to them?” asked Tom as he took a sip.
“The Carabinieri? Yes, they’ll want… proof. Of where you were, I mean.”
She and Tom exchanged a look. The bidders were a solid alibi, but how many of them would want to admit they were at an illegal auction?
“Cazzo!” shouted Fred. “I was supposed to tell you to call them right away!”
“Alright, alright, I’ll call the station.”
“No, I’ll do it.”
“Your Italian is garbage, Tom. Sit down.”

Another couple of NPCs coming soon (tm) to a Chronicle near you (take a wild guess which one). First off a trio of Anarchs swooping into town to serve as a rogue element to the current Anarch Movement's status quo (if one could even call it that). - Teàrlag Murray (she/her) - Chile of a local, infamous Gangrel Anarch legend, trying to use her late old man's rep to try and make a claim to Baron. - Louve Silver (she/they) - Ex Sabbat Gangrel, turned Ahrimane, trying to start shit with the local Camarilla since the Anarchs are playing *too* nice with 'em in her opinion. - Amaris (they/them/any) - Malkavian soothsayer who's seeing some mighty storm brewin' over the city in the near future.
Meanwhile, in the Sword of Caine, another trio makes its way into town, pursuing some nefarious Infernalists and trying to keep tabs on the local Sabbat's shenanigans. Surely there's no demon-worshipping going on here, no sir. - Invidia Fel (she/her) - Harbinger of Skulls Priscus with a mighty bone to pick with some rival necromancers. Judge Inquisitor to the Sabbat. - Aurelio Aristide Grimaldi (he/him) - Invidia's Templar and Knight Inquisitor to her Judge. Prim and proper Ventrue Crusader-type. - Kore Tartarus (she/they/it) - Black Hand Lasombra who's going to be beefing with her Bishop Sire and his most recent batch of childer. @deathwalkerr - "who was this?" aristide casually surveying emmrich's shelves. and all the skulls there. why do you have so many. are they friends or are they just cool.
FROM VARIOUS POINTS ENCIRCLING THE ROOM ON SHELVES HIGH AND LOW hollow eye sockets peer out into the room, the light from innumerable candles flickering over dry, aged bones, giving the illusion of movement, of life. It's nonsensical imagination conjuring such an image, of course; these skulls typically stay where he puts them, though a mischievous wisp or two have made attempts since his arrival.
“I see you've found Bastian. An absolute cad, but his understanding of the textures the Fade warps itself into is second to none. Incredibly recalcitrant with strangers, more's the pity. It took ages to coax more than pithy insults out of him." Death, as it seems, does not encourage one to listen to the angels of their better nature. In truth, the vitriol Bastian had hurled at Emmrich after he'd first acquired his skull had sorely tested his patience, until they'd finally come to something of an accord.
He pauses, in front of one of the lower shelves and lifts one of the skulls from its place among the others. “Others simply have no name at all. Either they refuse to answer inquiries or are so old the connection is…Tenuous.”
These are, for lack of a better phrasing, his problem children. Some have finally come round to conversing with relative ease, and it's no longer an uphill battle with metaphorical tooth and claw to glean anything at all from them. Others…The unnamed individual he now holds is one of those that refuse to speak almost at all. He can reach out and grasp what was, he can hold it for a short time, but like a feral cat determined to remain uncaged they will invariably claw their way free. His grasp has gotten stronger from where they started but they still have an exceptionally long way to go before they're fit for meeting polite company.
He gives the skull a long, contemplative look for a moment longer, searching the empty eye sockets as though the answer to the riddle this particular specimen taunts him with will be provided in the dark hollows, before gently replacing it. “But not impossible, given time, and enough patience to draw them out."
And, he supposes, to be stubborn enough to keep picking at the knotted string they are, loosening the tightened portions bit by bit, loop by loop, until it eventually unravels. Not every corpse is as willing to share their secrets as those housed in the vaults of the Necropolis.
“These, for the most part, represent those forgotten by the world of the living, found mostly among the charnel pits and the occasional mass grave, and I do what I can, to extract their histories so they may be remembered and recorded, and a proper resting place in the Necropolis can be found.”

The Imports and Exports of "Uncle Gunnysack" (The Haitian Tonton Macoute): Guns, Drugs, Gang Rapes and Death Squads on your Taxpayer Dime
The history of the Intelligence Community is a clown car packed with skeletons, and there was a time and place when Haiti’s Tonton Macoutes were riding shotgun.

Another of the CIA’s Cold War Frankensteinian Monsters—the Macoute—didn’t die; it mutated. From the blood-soaked streets of Port-au-Prince to the neon underbelly of Philly, their progeny now traffic drugs, guns, and terror like corporate commodities, all under the imperial playbook that once ousted Aristide and exported KLA butchers. “Follow the money” works to connect dots, name more beasts, and, yes, burn a few bridges along the way.
While a classic counterintelligence campaign was waged by USAID funded journalism to deny Haitians eat cats (nevermind we actually have tons of proof NSFL:https://archive.is/sXLP3), the biggest Haitian scandals involve the revolving door of intelligence assets involved in death squads, gang raping for political reasons, with drug trafficking, gun trafficking and child trafficking all on the menu.
While all intelligence agencies know how bad this is, they aren’t very keen on exposing this information to the public. You aren’t hearing about how your tax dollars funded groups that literally raped women to death and that is very intentional. The outrage if the average citizen know would result in common sense policy changes… like, “Hey Guys, let’s STOP funding death squads and child rape.” Best the CIA can do is ignore you. The worst? Hand you over to the Tonton Macoute.
A Dark History
Haiti was a petri dish of evil. It didn’t come out of nowhere. It was fostered, cultivated and grown into a monster.
1915-1920: Several thousand civilians were killed by the US occupying forces, along with the Haitian gendarmerie commanded by US officers. The Caco rebellion constituted the main armed challenge to the US occupation and had been organized and led by Charlemagne Péralte, who was killed on October 31, 1919. In 1918 and 1919, many Caco prisoners were systematically executed once they had been disarmed, following explicit, written orders (in Gaillard, 1981: 32-39, 49, 214, 307). Torture of Cacos or alleged Cacos by the Marines was also common practice; this included the hanging of individuals by their genitals, forced absorption of liquids, and the use of ceps, simultaneous pressure by two guns on both side of the tibia bone.
In addition to executions and violence against unarmed combatants, the US Army and its Haitian auxiliaries (the gendarmerie) allegedly committed massive killings and acts of violence against the civilian population. According to oral testimony gathered by historian Roger Gaillard (1981b, 1983), these included summary executions, rapes, setting houses on fire after gathering their inhabitants inside them, lynchings, and torching civilians alive; one local public figure was buried alive. A 1922 internal US army report recognized and justified the execution of women and children, presenting them as “auxiliaries” of the Cacos (in Gaillard, 1983: 259).
1937 (October): In the neighboring Dominican Republic, dictator Trujillo ordered the slaughter of 17,000 to 20,000 Haitian migrants and Dominicans of Haitian origin by the Dominican army (the conventional number in the Dominican Republic is 17,000, although Saez (1988: 60) puts it at 20,000 ; Turits (2002: 590) calculated a total of 15,000 killed). The killings were part of Operacion Perijil (“perijil,” parsley in Spanish, a word that Haitians were allegedly unable to pronounce without betraying their origin; those who failed to do so were killed on the spot). In the northeastern region alone, up to 15,000 individuals were killed, most of them with machetes, between the 2nd and the 8th of October. Soldiers used machetes rather than firearms to prevent alerting the surrounding Haitian communities, which were exterminated afterward.
1957 (June 15-16): The Haitian army killed between several hundred (Leconte, 1999) and three thousand (Pierre-Charles, 1973) supporters of President Fignolé -- who was popular among the disenfranchised sectors of the capital city -- after having overthrown him and forced him into exile.
1957-1986: The dictatorial Duvalier regime
François Duvalier, known as Papa Doc, was elected president with the army’s support in 1957 and ruled Haiti until his death in 1971. His son, Baby Doc, then replaced him and ruled until 1986. Papa Doc’s regime, the more brutal of the two, is said to be responsible for 30,000 to 50,000 assassinations and executions. The Duvaliers relied on a secret armed militia called Tonton macoutes (its official name was the Volontaires de la Sécurité Nationale, or National Security Volunteers), which imposed a rule of terror on the Haitian population (Diederich and Burt, 2005). This regime qualified as a totalitarian one according to Trouilot (1990), who carried out a detailed study of the roots and forms of Duvalierism.

The Macoute Playbook
Luckner Cambronne was a particularly fierce head of the “Tonton Macoutes” throughout the 1960’s and the beginning of the 1970’s, The Volontaires de la Sécurité Nationale, more infamously known as the Tonton Macoute (or, in a twist of myth, “Uncle Gunnysack”), institutionalized brutality:
Vodou-infused intimidation, tire burnings (a nod to Père Lebrun), public executions, and disappearances—the massacre of Marcel Numa and Louis Drouin in 1964 remains a grisly emblem. The "necklace" method, where victims were burned alive with tires around their necks, became a signature of their cruelty, amplified by figures like Luc Désir, a notorious Macoute commander in Port-au-Prince.

Their uniforms—dark sunglasses, blue denim shirts, and straw hats—became as iconic as the machetes they wielded, tools of both execution and terror. These were not merely symbols but instruments used to instill fear and project an image of ubiquitous power.
Architects of a regime built on blood money, they siphoned off state funds while the Macoute executed terror with impunity. Their personal wealth, amassed through corruption and exploitation, stood in stark contrast to the widespread poverty they perpetuated. Luckner Cambronne was known as the "Vampire of the Caribbean" for his profiting from the sale of Haitian blood and cadavers to the West for medical uses. Critics accused his forces of picking people to murder to provide bodies for such shipments
“The Vampire of the Caribbean” later faced U.S. indictment for heroin trafficking during the 1970s. Cambronne's network extended into international drug smuggling, illustrating the Macoute's deep entanglement with organized crime.
A Macoute stalwart who staged a 1991 coup attempt, symbolizing the force’s post-Duvalier resurgence. His continued influence highlighted the resilience of Macoute's ideology and network even after the regime's fall.
A shadowy financier for the Macoute, laundered drug money through Bahamas shell companies. Clémard Joseph Charles's financial operations underscored the Macoute's sophisticated money-laundering schemes and offshore connections.
Once a celebrated CIA asset turned “anti-gang hero,” Guy Philippe later was convicted in Miami for drug trafficking in 2017—his career a testament to the blurry lines between state support and criminality. His trajectory exemplifies the complex and often contradictory relationships between Haitian figures, international agencies, and criminal enterprises.
Commander of the Fort Dimanche prison, notorious for torturing and murdering political prisoners. Madame Max Adolphe (née Rosalie Bosquet, also known as Max Rosalie Auguste); Her name became synonymous with the brutal repression of the Duvalier regime.
The original Fort Dimanche was built by the French when Haiti was a colony prior to 1804 and fell into disrepair. It became a military facility built by the US Marines in the 1920s during the American occupation of Haiti. Already prior to Duvalier it may have been used for the handling of political prisoners. During the reign of Duvalier he and his Tonton Macoutes used the facility as an interrogation center and prison to incarcerate, torture, and murder political opponents. Also people who tried to escape from the island and were caught were brought to Fort Dimanche. His son, Jean-Claude Duvalier, continued to use it as an instrument of terror.

In the second half of 1993, bands of civilian thugs armed by the Haitian military were fashioned into the quasi-political organization known as the Front for the Advancement and Progress of Haiti (fraph). fraph's membership includes long-time Duvalierists, as well as Tontons Macoutes, attachés, and other army supporters. The organization's co-founders are Jodel Chamblain, a former Tonton Macoute, and Emmanuel Constant, the son of an army commander under François Duvalier Papa Doc. fraph has been nurtured by the military since its emergence in September 1993. For details on fraph's involvement in human rights abuses, see Human Rights Watch/Americas and National Coalition for Haitian Refugees, Terror Prevails in Haiti: Human Rights Violations and Failed Diplomacy (New York: Human Rights Watch, 1994)
“Haiti’s Death Mask”
”In February, the U.N. Civilian Mission to Haiti, a human rights monitoring team, investigated 40 to 50 killings, 20 disappearances and nearly a dozen rapes in the capital of Port-au-Prince alone. For March, the team has already recorded more than 20 deaths.”
CIA, Coup d’État, and the 2004 Haiti Debacle
In a maneuver that echoed the darkest chapters of American interventionism, the CIA-backed coup overthrew President Jean-Bertrand Aristide in February 2004. U.S. Marines even whisked him off to South Africa—a clear message that sovereign choice was for sale. Figures like Andy Apaid Jr., a wealthy businessman and leader of the Group of 184, played a key role in mobilizing opposition to Aristide, with support from the International Republican Institute (IRI).
As U.S. ambassador (2003–2005), Foley’s explosive op-ed in the Miami Herald decried Haiti as a “ticking time bomb.” A man steeped in covert operations, he not only facilitated Aristide’s ouster but later championed the export of the “Kosovo Model” to Haiti.
USAID’s Office of Transition Initiatives—tasked with “advancing U.S. foreign policy interests”—imported veterans from the Kosovo Liberation Army in 2004. These battle-hardened paramilitaries were deployed to train Haitian factions, a grim experiment in transferring brutal counterinsurgency tactics across continents. The involvement of Dyncorp, a private military contractor, in providing logistical support for this operation further illustrates the complex web of actors involved.
Once a KLA warlord and U.S. asset, Ramush Haradinaj’s legacy is stained with accusations of organ harvesting, torture, and ethnic cleansing. His story, recounted in indictments and international news, mirrors the violent methods later seen in Haiti.
According to The Lancet, over 8,000 Haitians were slaughtered in Port-au-Prince in the aftermath, with UN “peacekeepers”—the supposed harbingers of order—implicated in these massacres. Leaked cables and firsthand accounts attest to a campaign of terror designed to cement the coup’s aftermath. The role of MINUSTAH (United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti) in allegedly turning a blind eye to human rights abuses further complicates the narrative.
A notorious Miami gang, linked to over 30 homicides and drug operations exceeding $100 million, now collaborates with the Sinaloa Cartel. They’re the urban inheritors of Macoute brutality, wielding violence as a business tool. Investigations by the DEA have revealed the extent of their drug trafficking network and connections to Haitian criminal groups. “Gunwalking” provides both Sinaloa and Haitian organized crime with weapons.
The charismatic yet ruthless leader of the G9 Alliance, Chérizier's methods—infamous burnings and street-level terror—were linked to the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse. Reports from the National Human Rights Defense Network (RNDDH) have documented the G9's human rights abuses and links to political figures.
This New York City-based cadre of kidnappers once demanded a $1 million ransom for missionary hostages in 2021, showcasing the global reach of Haitian criminal networks. The FBI's involvement in the case highlighted the transnational nature of these criminal operations.
Over $1.2 billion in Venezuelan aid, intended for critical infrastructure, was funneled through opaque Panama shell companies (courtesy of Mossack Fonseca) and landed in the coffers of Haitian oligarch Gilbert Bigio and other shadow financiers. Investigations by Haitian senators revealed the extent of the corruption and impunity surrounding the PetroCaribe funds.
Jovenel Moïse asked for US State Department help in moving $80 million cash of these PetroCaribe funds, but the plan backfired. US Mercenaries including Navy SEALs and Delta Operators ended up in a Mexican standoff with remnants of the Tonton Macoute and Haitian police. Jovenel Moïse was later assassinated. Money is where, now?
Awarded $220 million for agricultural programs in Haiti, audits later revealed $50 million went missing—diverted to consultants in U.S. suburbia.
With board members including former CIA deputy John McLaughlin, DAI managed $150 million earmarked for “democracy promotion” that critics argue propped up pro-U.S. political elements.

The Kosovo-Haiti Pipeline
Macoute-trained “pistoleiros” have been hired to terrorize Rio’s favelas, their brutal methods echoing the tactics honed in Haiti. Reports from human rights organizations have documented the presence of Haitian mercenaries in Brazil and their involvement in violence.
Ex-FRAPH mercenaries now train Mai-Mai militias, as documented in a 2020 UN Panel Report, turning Haitian tactical brutality into an international export commodity.
The state remains a nexus for Haitian-linked drug trafficking; Zoe Pound’s cocaine pipeline thrives in a landscape where DEA stings too often overlook politically connected traffickers.
In 2023, law enforcement seized 1.2 tons of Haitian-linked fentanyl, underscoring the far-reaching consequences of Haiti’s kleptocratic networks.
A Rogues’ Gallery
From arming anti-Aristide gangs via the Dominican Republic in 2004 to providing protection for Baby Doc’s exile, the Agency’s fingerprints are indelibly inked on Haiti’s modern history.
Beyond funding disaster relief, USAID’s shadow operations funneled money into training paramilitaries (via the Kosovo export) and orchestrated “orphan rescue” scams led by figures like Laura Silsby. Keep in mind, the children she was moving were NOT orphans. They had parents. These children were being brought to a refurbished resort with a hot tub. Who funded the refurbishment? Catholic priests across the street.
In addition to this operation, groups of Clinton NGO donors like Michael Zelesky and Spencer Kimball were funding “orphan” schools in the same town. Remember, these children were not orphans. Silsby resurfaced as a “consultant” for Cerberus Capital Management, a private equity firm with defense sector investments.
Silsby faced civil lawsuits for fraud, wrongful termination and unpaid wages mostly related to Personal Shopper, an Internet company that she founded in 1999 with James Hammons. Silsby and Hammons worked together at Hewlett-Packard.[26] Silsby became part of MYSTATE USA an emergency notification company headed by Claudia Bitner in 2011.MYSTATE USA changed its name to Alertsense. Alertsense has since started another company called Konexus because of bad press when its software was involved in the 2018 Hawaii false missile alert. Silsby married and now goes by the name Laura Gayler or Laura Silsby Gayler.
Hired ex-Macoute operatives for post-earthquake “security” contracts in 2010 blurred the line between protection and predation.
Imposed austerity measures exacerbated poverty and social unrest, creating conditions conducive to violence and instability. “Misery Industrial Complex”.
Funded projects that critics argue benefited foreign corporations at the expense of Haitian communities.
Disaster Capitalism & Kleptocratic Elites
Post-2010 earthquake, contractors like KBR (a Halliburton subsidiary) and PAE—famed for profiteering in Iraq and Afghanistan—secured multimillion-dollar contracts, turning humanitarian relief into a cash cow.
Once the CEO of New Life Children’s Refuge and later “recycled” as a consultant for Cerberus Capital Management, Silsby’s 2010 bust for trafficking 33 Haitian children (who were not orphans but purchased from desperate parents) epitomizes the intersection of greed and cruelty.
Exorbitant telecom pricing moved in to take advantage of the misery, as well. Digicel, owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, has been the largest mobile network operator in Haiti since it entered the market in 2006. Natcom, a joint venture between the Haitian government and the Vietnamese military-run Viettel Group, began operations in 2011. These two companies control the majority of the Haitian telecom market.
Telecoms secured $45 million in USAID contracts for phantom “digital infrastructure” projects—an example of state funds disappearing into the pockets of Haiti’s rich.
As a UN envoy with close ties to Clinton Foundation donors, her muted response to election fraud under President Moïse illustrates the deep entanglement between humanitarian diplomacy and corporate interests.
Florida-based financier linked to Sunrise Bank, allegedly involved in laundering misappropriated aid funds.
Oligarch Gilbert Bigio accused of exploiting offshore havens to launder misappropriated aid funds. Haiti's wealthiest man, accused of profiting from the PetroCaribe scandal.
The Vulture Circus
“Aid workers and assassins now share the same Rolodex.”
Haiti’s descent into kleptocracy is not merely a local failure but a global enterprise—a carefully engineered marketplace of misery. The Macoute’s descendants, trained by the CIA, bankrolled by USAID, and franchised by PMCs, have commodified despair. They trade in terror with the same nonchalance as Wall Street trades stocks. In this grotesque circus, the only certainty is that the empire of exploitation continues to expand—an arm hacked off by machete, here, a missing million, there, one covert operation at a time....

“The Macoute didn’t need visas to migrate—they just rode shotgun on CIA cargo planes.”

i see, maybe i have been approaching this the way i was taught since i was a child (christian household). the whole "anger this god and you're doomed for all eternity" thing is probably still carved deep in my bones, so im really worried about offending the gods, though a lot of people have said they are not that easy to anger. working on it though!
and thank you for providing me with references (?), i tried opening the link but i couldn't download the file, I'll look from other sources to see if I'm able to save it. also, may i ask what's the original language for the text Aelius Aristides' Sacred Tales? i found a TON online, all with varying pages and translations, so I'm not quite sure if I'm reading the correct one.
worshippers and/or devotees of Asclepius, how do i start honoring him? like what do i offer and what devotional acts should i do?

Runclus Malevol

“Druid” © Vladimir Matyukhin, accessed at his ArtStation here
[The last of my menagerie of Malevols for now. My PCs never encountered Runclus, but were definitely tempted to explore the Indoornesse when they found the portal. Maybe some day.]
Runclus Malevol CR 12 NE Humanoid This humanoid figure is clothed in flowing robes and leather armor. He wears an elaborate crown of leather and bone, all but obscuring his face.
Runclus Malevol, the Man of the Woods, is the most powerful living Malevol, although “living” has an asterisk in this case. Runclus is one of Aristide’s children, and he has died and been reborn repeatedly—whenever he survives long enough to become very old, he ritually kills himself and is reborn into a young body. Runclus has lived 23 lives so far, and this latest body is actually close in appearance and build to his original. Still, he typically conceals his form with flowing robes and a great mask, the better to cast doubt on whether he is alive or dead, both or neither.
Runclus is usually found in the Indoornesse, a pocket dimension accessible primarily through Castle Xyntillian’s extensive basements. Runclus knows other paths in and out, and uses them to collect up a cadre of sinister druids, and to introduce new monsters into the ecosystem. Once these monsters have been thoroughly vetted in the Indoornesse, some of them move up into the Castle grounds proper. Runclus is a devout follower of Lamashtu. He has successfully converted several of his family members to the worship of the Mother of Monsters.
In combat, Runclus typically uses his spells to inflict debilitating diseases or curses on enemies before killing them outright. Although he is a decent melee combatant in his own right, he rarely fights hand to hand unless bolstered with spells, having used his wild shape, or both. Runclus does not fear death in combat, as he has died before; if he is slain, however, he pivots to a more cautious strategy, and remains hidden until his many lives ability has recharged.

He also gains excruciating deformation as a spell-like ability usable 3/day, and major curse 1/day, using his Wisdom as his casting stat. These bonuses plus his exceptional resources grant him +1 to his CR. Cheat Death (Ex) Once per day, Runclus may reroll a save against a death effect, energy drain, or necromancy effect before the result of the roll is revealed, or reroll a failed stabilization check while dying. He must take the result of the second roll, even if it is worse than the original roll. Many Lives (Ex): If Runclus Malevol is killed, he may automatically reincarnate (as the spell) 1 day later. The reincarnated druid appears in a safe location within 1 mile of his previous body. At will for the next 7 days, he can sense the presence of his remains as if using locate object as a spell-like ability. If he is killed during these 7 days, she remains dead and does not reincarnate. The many lives ability does not function if the reincarnated druid is slain by a death effect. A reincarnated druid cannot be raised from the dead or resurrected, though he can be reincarnated. Mysterious Stranger (Ex) Runclus Malevol adds +6 to the DC of Sense Motive, Diplomacy, and Knowledge checks to learn about him. Resist Death’s Touch (Ex) Runclus gains a +4 bonus on saving throws against death effects, energy drain, and necromancy effects, and on stabilization checks when dying.

Danni's Favorite Snarries!
I know everyone is just DYING of curiosity. Probably not. But! I love snarry a lot and I thought I would share my very favorites with you!
I'll list them by author alphabetically. If I've written an individual rec I will link that as well. If a fic doesn't have an individual rec yet...it's coming at some point! I like to reread fics before I rec them so it's all FRESH, but some of these are long and who has the time??
[click below the cut for EXCELLENT SNARRIES you should definitely read, because my favorites are OBVIOUSLY the Very Best.]
(I'm not full of myself, I swear.)
💚 A Bittersweet Potion (series) by Alchemia Dent & Bugland
Rated E. Word count: a lot. (Not publicly available atm)
From Fanlore: During his 5th year, Harry Potter acquires the ability to shape-shift into anything he wishes. While in the form of a cat, he is adopted by Severus Snape, who believes he is a stray.
🖤 In Between Days by Atrata
Rated E. Word count: 68k. My rec.
Snape kidnaps/rescues a clinically depressed Harry from the Dursleys, but nothing is quite what it seems.
💚 Blood and Fire by Cluegirl
Rated E. Word count: 34k.
After the deaths of Dumbledore and Voldemort, Severus Snape must learn to cope with yet another Master; Harry Potter.
Rated E. Word count: 5k.
🖤 Denial by drachenmina
Rated E. 8k. My rec.
Harry definitely isn't gay, and Severus certainly doesn't care about him.
💚 Suspiria by drawlight (ripeteeth)
Rated E. Word count: 5k.
You like to cut yourself on his bones, and he likes to let you.
🖤 A Choriambic Progression by Mariead Triste & Aristide
Rated E. Word count: a lot. 93k. My rec.
Snape is under a curse, is forced to spend time with Harry in the summer after OoTP.
💚 Night Watch by @mia-ugly
Rated E. 18k.
The connection between Harry and Voldemort is stronger than anyone realized. It is decided; the boy must be watched.
🖤 Rapture by mia_ugly
Rated E. 48k.
Snape sees the man, for the first time, on his twenty-fifth birthday.
💚 I Was Adrift by necromanticnoir
Rated E. 18k.
After the war, Harry finds that Snape is alive - and in Azkaban. Unfortunately, the only people allowed to visit inmates are immediate relations - or their spouses
🖤 Reconciling Lily's Eyes by persepolis130
Rated E. 52k. My rec.
Had Harry known "bonding" with his former professor would lead him to three different countries, a hastily-planned wedding and his pants around his ankles in Snape's sitting room, he wouldn't have quit his day job. Or…maybe he would've… What it's like to fall in love with someone you absolutely cannot stand, who happens to still be in love with your mum.
💚 The White Road by @perverse-idyll
Rated E. 47k. My rec.
One day, comfortably set up in the afterlife, Lily Evans Potter switches on the telly and gets hooked on the Harry Potter show.
🖤 When the Rose and the Fire Are One by perverse_idyll
Rated E. 81k.
Harry's haunted by guilt. Snape's warded by roses. Each must free the other in order to free himself.
💚 Snape: Home Fries Nazi by pir8fancier
Rated E. 27k.
When Harry defeats Voldemort, all those marked by Voldemort lose their magic. Snape decamps to the United States, where he becomes a fry cook in a diner. Five years after Voldemort's defeat, Harry comes to him for advice. AU, obviously, as Snape was still alive when I wrote this story.
🖤 Something to Remember (So They Won't Forget) by RoozetteR
Rated E. 10k.
All Harry wanted to do in his eight year was learn how to move on with his life. He succeeds.
💚 Yet Here You Stand by sarkysue
Rated E. 40k.
Can we ever see ourselves as we really are? Sometimes we need to look through someone else’s eyes, and even then the truth can change. Over ten years we visit Harry and Snape on Harry’s Birthday, starting from when they are forced together in 1998 to keep Harry safe. I wanted to give both Harry and Severus the chance to be broken and to learn how to live with themselves. I hope I’ve done them proud.
🖤 Shame by Spirit
Rated M. 4k. My rec.
Shame. It choked him. It made him cringe inside, as Snape's anatomy would be ripped apart, examined and found revolting. It made him lay awake some nights while Neville snored and Dean tried creeping back into the dorm and Ron muttered rubbish in his sleep. It made him angry and left him feeling trapped.
💚 Nights of Gethsemane (series) by starcrossed
Rated E. 300k. My rec.
Harry is a prisoner of the Dark Lord and Snape, his prison guard. Completely cut off from the outside world, Harry struggles to hold himself intact as he is forced to rely on Snape for everything. Yet Snape may not be all that he appears....
🖤 Chrysalis by starcrossedgirl
Rated E. 84k.
In which Harry is a tad messed up after the war, but Snape gives him a run for his money. Or: an epic tale of PTSD, recovery and gay porn!
💚 The Sleeping Prince by who_la_hoop
Rated T. 42k. My rec.
It's hard to ignore your past — and impossible to do so when you can't remember your future. But a meddlesome portrait, a dragon with an ancient grudge and true love's kiss teach an unlikely Prince that a regrettable past doesn't have to mean an unhappy ending.
🖤 The Beating of This Fragile Heart by @writcraft
Rated E. 33k. My rec.
After the war, the last thing Severus Snape needs is the memory of a fleeting wartime kiss and a very persistent Harry Potter thwarting his plans to live a peaceful and solitary life. It’s only when Harry’s life is endangered that Severus is finally forced to confront his feelings head on.
