Innovative Chemotherapy Approach Shows Promise Against Lung Cancer - Technology Org
Lung cancer is not the most common form of cancer, but it is by far the deadliest.
Kytai T. Nguyen, the Alfred R. and Janet H. Potvin Distinguished Professor in Bioengineering at UTA. Image credit: UTA
Despite treatments such as surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy, only about a quarter of all people with the disease will live more than five years after diagnosis, and lung cancer kills more than 1.8 million people worldwide each year, according to the World Health Organization.
To improve the odds for patients with lung cancer, researchers from The University of Texas at Arlington and UT Southwestern Medical Center have pioneered a novel approach to deliver cancer-killing drugs directly into cancer cells.
“Our method uses the patient’s own cellular material as a trojan horse to transport a targeted drug payload directly to the lung cancer cells,” said Kytai T. Nguyen, lead author of a new study on the technique in the peer-reviewed Bioactive Materials and the Alfred R. and Janet H. Potvin Distinguished Professor in Bioengineering at UTA. “The process involves isolating T-cells (a type of immune cell) from the cancer patient and modifying them to express a specific receptor that targets the cancer cells.”
The crucial step in this new technique involves isolating the cell membrane from these modified T-cells, loading the membranes with chemotherapy medications, and then coating them onto tiny drug-delivery granules. These nanoparticles are roughly 1/100 the size of a strand of hair.
Jon Weidanz, associate vice president for research and innovation and professor of kinesiology and bioengineering. Image credit: UTA
When these membrane-coated nanoparticles are injected back into the patient, the cell membrane acts as a guide, directing the nanoparticles to the tumor cells with precision. This approach is designed to deceive the patient’s immune system, as the coated nanoparticles mimic the properties of immune cells, avoiding detection and clearance by the body.
“The key advantage of this method lies in its highly targeted nature, which allows it to overcome the limitations of conventional chemotherapy that often lead to detrimental side effects and reduced quality of life for patients,” said co-author Jon Weidanz, associate vice president for research and innovation and a researcher in kinesiology and bioengineering.
“By delivering chemotherapy directly to the tumor cells, the system aims to minimize collateral damage to healthy tissues,” continued Weidanz, who also is a member of UTA’s Multi-Interprofessional Center for Health Informatics.
In the study, researchers loaded the nanoparticles with the anti-cancer drug Cisplatin. The membrane-coated nanoparticles accumulated in parts of the body with the tumors rather than in other parts of the body. As a result, this targeted delivery system reduced the size of the tumors in the control group, demonstrating its efficacy.
“This personalized approach could pave the way for a new era of medicine tailored to each patient’s unique characteristics and the specific nature of their tumor,” Nguyen said. “The potential for reduced side effects and improved effectiveness makes our technique a noteworthy advancement in the field of cancer treatment.”

How Shota Imanaga wound up all over Chicago before the Cubs landed the free agent
[original article]
Shota Imanaga listened to the roar of the crowd during the national anthem, taking in the scene before one of Connor Bedard’s first home games with the Chicago Blackhawks. Imanaga later returned to the United Center to buy a Michael Jordan jersey and take a picture next to the iconic statue.
This was early November, a few weeks before Imanaga entered the posting system created by Major League Baseball and Nippon Professional Baseball. Imanaga, a fixture with the Yokohama DeNA BayStars and the winning pitcher in Japan’s victory over Team USA in last year’s World Baseball Classic championship game, wanted a new challenge.
With a 45-day negotiating window beginning to close, Imanaga returned to Illinois at Christmastime to make himself available for meetings and reassess his options as a free agent. Octagon, the agency that represents him, has an office on Michigan Avenue and a network throughout the Chicago area. The central location made sense for possible travel ahead of Thursday’s deadline to sign a contract with a major-league club.
Imanaga and his associates posted up at a suburban hotel, getting comfort food at Mitsuwa Marketplace, a Japanese grocery store in Arlington Heights. Imanaga worked out at Bo Jackson’s indoor facility near O’Hare International Airport. Imanaga’s group now has a collection of tourist photos around Chicago that could best be described as “Where’s Shota?”
Imanaga felt so comfortable that he wanted to stay. He just wasn’t sure that the interest was mutual.
“Each team is different and it’s a long process,” Imanaga told The Athletic on Thursday through an interpreter. “One time I mentioned, ‘I hope the Cubs offer me.’ I was kind of joking just because at that time the Cubs were out of the picture.”
Cubs executives Jed Hoyer and Carter Hawkins are patient, logical and calculating. All throughout December and into the middle of January, the Cubs did not sign a free agent to a major-league contract or make a trade to improve an 83-win roster that subtracted Cody Bellinger and Marcus Stroman. Hoyer personally scouted Imanaga during a trip to Japan in September and remained in contact with his representatives, though the Cubs did not jump out as a frontrunner until the late stages of the negotiations.
The rest of the offseason will be shaped by that ability to pounce. The Cubs have the financial resources and the prospects to make a deal at any moment. That reality became harder to grasp during the two months of inactivity between Hoyer hiring Craig Counsell as the sport’s highest-paid manager and Imanaga signing a four-year, $53 million contract with options to take the deal to five years and $80 million. But the Cubs are very good at recruiting when they concentrate on certain free agents, making personalized pitches that previously resonated with Japanese players such as Yu Darvish and Seiya Suzuki.
The Cubs demonstrated some more creativity in Thursday’s trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers, giving up two prospects who are talented but far way (Jackson Ferris and Zyhir Hope) for a reliever who will immediately slot into Counsell’s bullpen (Yency Almonte) and a left-handed hitter who crushed Triple-A pitching (Michael Busch) but was blocked by all the stars at Dodger Stadium.
Suddenly, the talk at this weekend’s Cubs Convention will shift toward the action and away from the moves that aren’t being made. Imanaga will be introduced Friday afternoon at the Loews Chicago Hotel. When Imanaga went to a Schaumburg shopping center on Wednesday — to buy a new tie in the right shade of Cubbie blue for the press conference — the clerk recognized him and double-checked by looking at the name on the credit card. The anonymity is already fading.
“The Cubs stepped in,” Imanaga said. “Their intensity level made me feel like they really wanted me.”

New Dallas convention center has developers scrambling
Tumblr media
Behind closed doors and in lightly attended meetings at City Hall, plans are being laid for the future of downtown Dallas, plans that will shape its physical character and economic viability for the next 50 years and beyond.
This may sound conspiratorial, but it is nonetheless true.
With billions of dollars in public and private money at stake, a handful of private developers and institutions are eyeing the landscape and angling to promote their interests.
Managing these interests would be challenging in ordinary circumstances.
But this jockeying comes with the city being led by an interim city manager and a mayor who seems more interested in partisan politics than local governance, as The Dallas Morning News editorial board noted.
The multibillion-dollar remaking of the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center will dramatically alter downtown Dallas at enormous cost to the public. There are many open questions about the project, from what it will look like to what development around it will be, raising concerns.
The project driving these machinations is the remaking of the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, a multibillion-dollar endeavor that will dramatically alter the southwestern portion of downtown.
The prospect of that transformation has already attracted the WNBA’s Dallas Wings, who have agreed to move from Arlington to the upgraded convention center arena in 2026.
Tumblr media
“I think that part of the city has been overlooked and it has been held back, which is a real opportunity,” says Jack Matthews, who leads Inspire Dallas, the consortium developing the convention center.
“I think this could be the piece that creates the development going on all around it in every direction.”
That process has already begun.
Projects that are either proposed or in the works include: the remaking of the old Dallas Morning News headquarters into a mixed-use development;
Tumblr media
a $5 billion plan by Hunt Realty Investments to develop the 20-acre Reunion site adjacent to Union Station; a $66.8 million tower and garage on the former WFAA Plaza site along Young Street; a high-speed rail station in the Cedars; Phase II of the bond-funded Dallas College building program, which entails a rethinking of the school’s sprawling downtown campus; and the sale and potential remaking of the historic Greyhound bus terminal.
“Dallas has an opportunity to create a truly walkable downtown,” says developer Ray Washburne, whose holdings include the former Morning News site as well as the nearby Founders Square building on Jackson Street. “The key components and land pieces are all in place.”
That opportunity is contingent on the design of the convention center, which has changed considerably since it was introduced to the public in February 2022.
Renderings presented at that time showed an enormous boomerang-shaped structure to the west of Lamar Street stretching from behind the Omni Hotel to the Cedars, bridging Interstate 30.
By rotating the center 90 degrees from its current orientation, the design promised to open up space for a new mixed-use neighborhood on the other side of Lamar, between the convention center and City Hall.
A speculative rendering for a new Dallas convention center, showing a possible entrance…
A speculative rendering for a new Dallas convention center, showing a possible entrance arrangement.
Tumblr media
The deck connecting the convention center to the Cedars would be replaced by an “expanded urban open space initiative,” which is as vague as it sounds.
A trolley running from Young Street to the Cedars also has been floated as a possible link.
What the convention center will actually look like is an open question and won’t be answered until an architectural team is selected, a process now underway.
The city will be responsible for developing the mixed-use buildings to the east of the complex, and what those will be and when exactly they will be built remains unresolved.
Indeed, the whole project poses more questions than answers.
Developers of neighboring properties are understandably concerned about how the complex will be oriented.
“I view this as a blank slate and a generational opportunity for the city,” says Hunt Realty president Colin Fitzgibbons.
Tumblr media
The details, which are few, will be instrumental in determining the success of the project, and by extension the downtown core.
How — exactly — will the convention center and its ancillary developments create connections to each other and to the rest of downtown?
The danger is that the same pitfalls that have dogged the current convention center will be repeated: the creation of an isolated behemoth that makes little connection to the rest of downtown or to the city beyond.
These concerns arise at a moment of transition and challenge for the downtown core.
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and with the migration of businesses to Uptown (and the suburbs), commercial occupancy rates have plummeted.
Conversely, downtown’s residential population has risen, from less than 7,000 in 2010 to around 15,000 in 2023, according to the advocacy group Downtown Dallas Inc.
New parks and an expansion of entertainment options are making the area a more attractive round-the-clock destination.
But there is a long way to go before it is the kind of vibrant urban place, teeming with life and business, that it was in the first half of the 20th century, before it was transformed to privilege the car.
Improved streets, sidewalks and bike paths will help, and the recently approved bond program will pay for some of those upgrades.
A proposal for electronic billboards will only be counterproductive; more visual junk and obstacles for pedestrians.
“Dallas is on the cusp of greatness, as long as we don’t sit back and watch it pass us by,” Washburne says. That is true, but so is the inverse corollary: the wrong decisions will compromise the city for generations.
That makes the lack of clarity as to the planning and design of the convention center and its ancillary pieces all the more troubling.
After more than two years and a commitment of more than a billion dollars in public money, it is impossible to know if the city is looking at a boondoggle or its salvation.
Which way, Dallas?
These buildings define Texas architecture

THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINT EXPEDITUS OF ARMENIA The Patron of Emergencies, Revolutionaries, Navigators and Against Procrastination Feast Day: April 19
Puns on saints' names are not uncommon, but that a saint named Expeditus should be invoked against procrastination just seems too good.
There was a real St. Expeditus: He was one of six Armenian Christians, possibly Roman soldiers, who were martyred in Melitene. His fellow martyrs are Sts. Hermogenes, Gaius, Aristonicus, Rufus and Galata. There is documentary evidence that St. Expeditus was venerated in Turin in northern Italy during the Middle Ages. From there, devotion to him spread to Germany and Sicily in the 17th century, but how he became the saint of procrastinators is harder to pin down.
The version with the widest circulation claims that late in the 18th century relics of a martyr, along with a statue, were shipped from Rome to a Paris convent. Neither the relics nor the statue were labeled, but the shipping crate was marked 'Spedito,' which the nuns assumed was the name of the saint. The sisters Latinized Spedito into St. Expeditus. It's a good story, but it does sound like a holy urban legend.
An older legend tells us that on the day Expeditus resolved to become a Christian, the devil came to him in the form of a raven and tried to persuade him to put off his conversion until the next day. Expeditus declared, 'No! I will be a Christian today!'
Devotion to St. Expeditus has spread around the globe. In the United States he is popular among New Orleans Catholics, who tell a story similar to the French legend. The Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe received several crates of statues of saints. One of the statues was unidentified, but on the crate was the French term, Expedit, so that was taken to be the unknown saint’s name.
In Sao Paolo, Brazil, hundreds of thousands of Catholics crowd into the churches for Mass on the saint's feast day. The French introduced St. Expeditus to the inhabitants of Reunion, an island in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar. The saint's cult is particularly strong there, witness the countless private handmade shrines and altars lining the roads. Chile is another center of devotion to St. Expeditus, particularly at the beach resort of Vina del Mar where a small church dedicated to him has become a popular destination for pilgrims.
In art, St. Expeditus is usually shown dressed as a Roman soldier, holding the palm frond that is the symbol of martyrdom in one hand, and raising above his head a cross on which is inscribed the word 'Hodie,' Latin for 'Today,' and trampling on a raven labeled 'Cras,' Latin for 'Tomorrow.'
In Germany, however, St. Expeditus is depicted pointing at a clock, a reminder not to waste time, or procrastinate.

Gordon Chang to Newsmax: China Working on Bioweapons
Tumblr media
Gordon G. Chang, author of "The Coming Collapse of China," told Newsmax that Beijing is experimenting with what appears to be biological weapons targeting human brains.
Appearing Friday on "Carl Higbie FRONTLINE," Chang warned of the threat of China developing the weapons, first detailed in a report by The Washington Times earlier this week.
"These are biological weapons, and China isn't part of the Biological Weapons Convention that would outlaw this," Chang explained.
The Times' report cited recent studies by the Chinese Communist Party on biological weapons designed to induce sleep or sleep-related disturbances in enemy troops.
Other potential weapons would create a connection between the brain and external devices, as well as pharmaceuticals designed to impair people genetically and physiologically.
"This whole idea of 'genetic drugs,' although it has not really been fleshed out, clearly it is a biological weapon. And certainly, the other weapons that we've been talking about in this Washington Times report ... [are] essentially biological-influenced," Chang stated.
Chang believes it is time now more than ever to challenge China on their biological weapons program, which he suggested could be responsible for the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Vice Chair of the America First Policy Institute Center for American Security Fred Fleitz, who joined Chang to talk about the report, agreed with the China expert and noted that similar weapons have already been used in Havana, Cuba.
"This is a biological weapon that's being contemplated. Sophisticated drugs and psychological pressure in combination with these drugs to take over the minds of enemy soldiers. This is a very serious violation of the Biological Weapons Convention," Fleitz argued.

Fundamentalist Organizations and Fundamentalist Leaders
I've never seen someone piece together all the influences and interacting organizations in fundamentalism. I'm honored to have discovered it and archived it on this blog. (Original Post) Text from post pasted below.
Today we are continuing on in our quest to understand, as far as possible, the isolated and puzzling world of the IFB. It is my contention that fundamentalism/legalism is on the rise in many denominations and independent churches. I contend that this is due to a group of Calvinistas who have gained some prominence in the neo-evangelical world. For example, Al Mohler, president of SBTS, the flagship seminary of the SBC, is part of this movement. He is currently dedicated to establishing Young Earth Creationism as the only theologically viable Christian position.

"True, they don’t belong to a “convention” and send messengers to a meeting each year. And they don’t make up a “denomination” that has oversight beyond the churches themselves. What they do have is a loose network, usually centered around the universities that teach the preachers.
Each of these networks has a slightly different “flavor”. Within the networks they share mission boards, camps, school associations, and quite often each faction is at odds with the others. For example, Bob Jones University people look down on Hyles-Anderson graduates, and Pensacola Christian preachers think poorly of Northland grads. Which is why those who are upset by the 20/20 exposé are accusing it of “painting with a wide brush”. I say that you need a wide brush to hit all the various different factions found in the IFB movement. They wouldn’t lump themselves all together, but looking in from the outside, there’s little difference to be seen."
There is a blog dedicated to exposing issues the IFB and other legalistic venues called Fallen From Grace. Link. Please note the dig at the SBC. Said blogger understands that things are hardly pristine in the SBC and gives testimony to my contention that fundamentalism/legalism is a pox that runs through many denominations. Sadly, this blogger, who was a pastor in this group of churches, is now an atheist
“… there is a behind the scenes connection between IFB Churches. While there is no such thing as an IFB denomination, churches do fellowship and unite around a particular college and groups like Bill Gothard, the Sword of the Lord, the Baptist Bible Fellowship, Independent Baptist Fellowship, and the Southwide Baptist Fellowship. (to name a few) They even have their own discussion forum, The Fighting Fundamentalist Forum.
Pastors support the college they attended and they tend to support missionaries and ministries associated with their alma mater and whatever particular fellowship group they are a part of. These associations are every bit as denominational as churches associated with the Southern Baptist Convention. (another group that is rife with abuse )
If a pastor gets crossways with the college he attended or fellow pastors he fellowships with, he can find himself ostracized and, in some cases, unable to find a church to pastor. (which is one reason IFB pastors start new churches).”
What is The Sword of the Lord?
This is a publishing house within the IFB. It publishes a newspaper, books and pamphlets. Dr Shelton Smith and two men who were fortunate to marry Smith’s two daughters currently run it. Link.
What is the Fighting Fundamentalist Forum? Link
This is an interesting discussion board. There are separate chat rooms for each college, which may indicate that each college has it own distinctives. There is a chat room for men only that appears to concentrate on gun ownership and one for women that had a rip-roaring discussion going on the best chicken spaghetti recipes.
Let’s take a look at two groups to understand how these affiliations between churches develop. There are a number of other such groups but I chose these two to demonstrate the points that Tikatu and others are making. Although these quotes are from Wikipedia, one can confirm this history on many IFB sites
What is Bible Baptist Fellowship? Link
“The Baptist Bible Fellowship International (BBFI) is a fellowship of Baptist pastors formed in 1950 by members who separated from the World Baptist Fellowship. BBFI Headquarters are in Springfield, Missouri. In 2004, BBFI reported 4,500 congregations and 1.2 million members in North America, with over 10,000 churches worldwide.[1]
Approximately 100 pastors and missionaries were led of God to begin this new Baptist movement that would emphasize a worldwide church planting ministry. They chose Springfield as their headquarters and started the Baptist Bible College, the Baptist Bible Tribune, a clearinghouse for missionary support, and this fellowship of like-minded churches and individuals."
What is the World Baptist Fellowship? Link
“The Fundamentals was a series of twelve articles defending the 'fundamentals' of the faith, such as the inerrancy of the Bible, the virgin birth of Christ and the literal return of Christ. In 1920 Curtis Lee Laws, a Baptist editor of The Watchman-Examiner, coined the term 'fundamentalist' and defined a fundamentalist as one "ready to do battle royal for the Fundamentals of the faith." J. Frank Norris became a combatant in the fundamentalist/modernist controversy. He edited a paper entitled The Fundamentalist. Both the Southern Baptist Convention and the Baptist General Convention of Texas expelled Norris because of his controversial behavior.
Norris, C. P. Staley and others formed the Premillennial Missionary Baptist Fellowship in 1933 at Fort Worth, Texas. In 1938, the name was changed to World Fundamental Baptist Missionary Fellowship and then to World Baptist Fellowship (WBF) after the schism that created the Baptist Bible Fellowship International in 1950. The WBF was again divided in 1984, when a group led by Raymond W. Barber established the Independent Baptist Fellowship International and the Norris Bible Baptist Institute.”
Note the following characteristics of these two groups:
Both groups established their own colleges.
Both have churches affiliated with each group.
Both believe that God called them to start these groups even though it involved disunity. One of the groups has experienced a second “schism.”
Here are some observations of the IFB.
Most believe in KJVO Bible.
Most share similar views of societal standards such as rules for interpersonal relationships, dress, etc.
Most practice extreme separatism.
So, what’s the difference. I believe that Tikatu’s comment is most incisive. These groups center around personalities such as preachers, which, by default, implies the colleges that these pastors attended. In other words, their differences are not based on Biblical standards, per se. In fact, this sort of affiliation is not unlike basketball in NC. One supports only one of the following: The Duke Blue Devils, UNC Tarheels, or the NC State Wolfpack.
The IFB has churches that affiliate with one another but there does not seem to be much functional difference in the day to day life of these groups and their churches. The most telling testimony to the similarities of all these churches, regardless of affiliation, are in the IFB survivors groups. In TWW’s opinion, survivor’s groups on the internet have done the faithful a great service. Instead of hiding abuse in a dark corner, they shout the pain and the light shines.
We highly recommend that you visit the following Facebook group called “Independent Fundamental Baptist (IFB) Cult Survivors (and their Supporters).” Link.
The first page included the following information. I did not include all of the examples which can be found at the site. “If you grew up indoctrinated under the aberrant religious teachings of Bob Jones University, Pensacola Christian College, Hyles Anderson College, or ATI (Bill Gothard) and are no longer "one of them," you understand the need for this group.”
“You're familiar with most if not all of the following:
King James Onlyism
The Bible says, 'Touch Not God's Anointed' and that means ME!"
“Let me tell you something big boy, you rebel against your parents and you go down across town to that Southern Baptist Church and let me tell you something, you've stepped out of the will of God! You hear me? You just want to hear that mamby, pamby preaching from those preachers who water down the gospel of Jesus Christ and that is nothing more than your rebellious heart crying out in your SIN!"
“Billy Graham has done more damage to the cause of Christ than any other man alive! He's a heretic!"
"I don't care if she says she was beaten and molested. She's just BITTER!"
"Well, good, godly men get accused falsely of molestation all the time now-a-days by people who hate what they stand for."
"I don't care if she was 15 and he was 50, she was well known for wearing provocative clothing. And how do we really know who is telling the truth"?
"Black people have the 'mark of Cain'."
"Any counseling by a professional psychologist is of the devil! I don't care if they claim to be a Christian. If they are licensed and not a part of our group, they are not godly counselors. They are secular humanists ready and waiting to accuse every good man of doing something wrong. They want to see the destruction of the true church!"
Your parents inscripted Bible verses in the wooden "rod" they used to beat you with.
"Santa is really Satan in disguise!"
You were a guy/girl beaten mercilessly in an unlicensed group home.
You ran away from one of these group homes.
You were one of the girls sent to a group home for "rebellion," but all you really wanted was to simply wear a pair of pants.
No mixed swimming.
Culottes
Chick Tracts
You may also fit into the group well if you once attended or were reared/trained under materials available through:
Bob Jones University (Greenville, SC)
Pensacola Christian College (Pensacola, FL)
Hyles-Anderson College (Hammond, IN)
Advanced Training Institute-Bill Gothard
Quiverfull
Vision Forum
Above Rubies
Creation Research Institute
The Wilds Christian Camp
The Bill Rice Ranch
The Roloff Homes
No Greater Joy
Your spiritual gurus at one time in your life were most likely:
Bob Jones Jr.
John R. Rice
Jack Hyles
Jack Schaap
Bill Gothard
Doug Phillips
Kent Hovind
Michael Pearl
Ron Comfort
Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar
Fred Phelps (Westboro Baptist Church)
Or any other man who received a phony doctorate from one of the "colleges/universities" in the IFB.”

An act played before The Beatles performed in Dallas on Sept.18,1964 on the final stop of their nationwide U.S. tour.
DALLAS Home to some history Arena set stage for many acts, will add 1 more to list
The Dallas City Council recently approved a deal offering the WNBA’s Dallas Wings $19 million in incentives to move to downtown from Arlington starting in 2026.
Under the 15-year deal, the Wings will become the featured attraction at Dallas Memorial Auditorium, which is part of the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center complex.
The Wings’ current home is College Park Center at the University of Texas at Arlington.
Here’s what to know about the Memorial Auditorium arena.
Early days
The convention center is a mosaic of structures.
Every new building has been part of a city-led effort to expand the complex, which stretches from City Hall to the Cedars neighborhood.
Memorial Auditorium, built in 1957, was the complex’s first structure.
It is near The Black Academy of Arts and Letters, which also is undergoing renovations as part of the larger redevelopment plan.
George Dahl, the Dallas architect responsible for the construction and design of the 26 Art Deco-style buildings in Fair Park, designed the arena.
Capacity
The arena has the capacity to hold nearly 10,000 attendees.
It was always imagined as a multipurpose space capable of hosting concerts and arena sports matches, among other entertainment events.
In 1973, the auditorium was renamed the convention center arena after the complex had 1 million square feet added to it.
Events
At its peak, the arena was the stage for acts like Elvis Presley, the Jackson Five, the Beatles and Led Zeppelin.
Between 1967 and 1977, artists like The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Miles Davis, the Rolling Stones, The Who, the Grateful Dead, Black Sabbath, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Billy Joel, Prince and Fleetwood Mac also performed there.
The Dallas Chaparrals, a team affiliated with the American Basketball Association, was based at the arena until 1973.
The arena also hosted an appearance by John F. Kennedy during his 1960 presidential campaign.
Changes
Tumblr media
Rosa Fleming, director of the city’s Convention and Event Services department, told The Dallas Morning News in February that the arena’s renovation and upgrades will include efforts to make the space compliant with the requirements of the American with Disabilities Act.
The renovations could also add more seats to the arena.
Right now, its antiquated design and the lack of accessibility limits the arena’s use to 26 events per year.
But the upgrades will allow the space to be used as many as 100 times per year.
The plan
In the last decade, the city has approved projects that could make the area around the convention center more walkable and public-transit-friendly.
The city estimated in January 2023 that it would need $2.8 billion to build a new convention center, with a new deck park over Interstate 30 nearby.
The city estimated needing more than $386 million to renovate and reconstruct the arena and The Black Academy of Arts and Letters, both of which which are attached to the current convention center.

Reverend Jake Woodyard Boggs, Jr. passed peacefully at age 97 early in the evening of Monday, January 10, 2022. Jake was blessed with good health and lived on his own in Mink Shoals (with some assistance in the last few years) after the passing of the love of his life, Betty Rae (White) Boggs, on January 24, 2016. He got the most out of his life and earthly body. He loved working outside, tending to his yard, building fences, and growing flowers. He cut his yard with a push mower until he was past 95 years, and he also drove until that same age when his children deemed it unsafe and took his keys (at great personal peril). The highlight of Jake's week was attending Emmanuel Baptist Church on the West Side, where he had held revivals, served as an interim Pastor, and was a member for over 50 years. His funeral service will be at Emmanuel Baptist Church at Noon on Saturday, January 22, with visitation beginning at 11 a.m. His body will be laid to rest beside that of his beloved Betty Rae, to whom he was married for over 65years, at the White family cemetery in Clendenin.
Jake was born to Jake Woodyard Boggs, Sr. and Ruby Oressa (Paisley) Boggs on May 9, 1924, in the town of Gassaway, West Virginia. He had one sister, Marian Boggs Smithers of Belle, who preceded him in death. Jake's family moved from Gassaway when he was a young boy, and he grew up in Belle where his father worked as a machinist for Dupont. His mother worked for many years in the women's coats department of Stone & Thomas. After attending schools in Belle, and with the help of local businessman R. M. Maxwell (founder of the People's Store, later Stone & Thomas, and also of the Bible Center Church), Jake attended the Prairie High School Academy and then Prairie Bible Institute in Alberta, Canada where he studied for six years. Following graduation, Jake continued his education at Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC, for four years. He married his wife Betty on November 23,1950, his senior year at Bob Jones. In his early twenties, Jake held revival meetings throughout West Virginia using an old piano and a collapsible meeting tent. He also had a Christian Radio Broadcast in Charleston and published a monthly paper called Christian Conquest. Betty worked as a surgical nurse at Charleston Memorial Hospital until Jake could grow his ministry. By the 1960s, he held revival meetings throughout the United States.
In the late 1960s, Jake started a travel business organizing and directing tours. He began with tours to the Holy Land, which was his favorite destination. He visited Israel and the greater Middle East 48 times. Jake also directed groups of travelers to the Soviet Union as early as 1970, and to China, Japan, India, Africa, Haiti, Hawaii, the South Pacific, and all throughout Europe. Jake still considered his most important work the revival meetings he held throughout America, and he had great joy in the more than 20,000 people who committed their lives to Jesus Christ in these meetings. Jake admired Dr. Billy Graham and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He met Billy Graham several times, and Billy joked with Jake that they had been successful because they both had been expelled from Bob Jones University (Jake for missing chapel services his senior year because he was spending too much time with his new wife). Jake heard Dr. King speak at an American Baptist convention in the early 1960s and was so impressed that he tracked him down and had a private conversation with Dr. King and his wife, Coretta, at a restaurant near the convention site. He considered Dr. King's assassination to be one of the great tragedies of American history.
Jake is survived by his two children, Deborah Faith (Boggs) VanderWoude of Bradenton, FL, and Jonathan David Boggs of Charleston, along with his four grandchildren: Michal Anne VanderWoude of Sarasota, FL; Marlin Boggs, married to Kathryn, of Arlington, VA; Garrett Boggs of Huntington; and Winsor Boggs, married to Abby, of Vancouver, Canada.
