Good evening, everyone. We have a very tragic WWII Anniversary to discuss tonight.

Eighty Years Ago, Today - (Tue) December 28th, 1943, near Douglas, Arizona:

As WWII rages, the ranks of the US Military swell by tens of thousands. Time is short, and the training is hard, fast and tough across the nation.As Allied victories begin to mount up, the time tables accelerate, and more and more troops are needed on the front as soon as possible.

At an unspecified (at this time) Army Air Field (AAF), either Douglas AAF or Hereford, AAF, a routine training flight is about to take off. 2nd Lieutenant Douglas McDow, US Army Air Forces, a 30-year old native of California, is about to take up 26-year old Flight Cadet Clarence A. Thompson, also of California.

Their mount is a UC-78 “Bobcat,” a military incarnation of the successful, twin-engine Cessna “T-50,” which first flew in 1939. The plane, a five seater covered in fabric, is quite suited to the task as a preliminary military trainer.

The two men climb aboard, and after a successful pre-check, the little plane leaves the runway, climbs into the sky… and vanishes without a trace. Searches prove futile, and the two aviators become another tragic ghost story of WWII.

We’ll never know what happened for sure, but what we do know is that hikers in the Pinelao Mountains come across the shattered wreckage of an aircraft… in April, 1974 - 31 years later. Recovery crews are able to ascertain it is the missing Bobcat, found some 90 miles north of where she took off on that fateful training mission.

Recovery personnel also find the remains of the two US Army Flyers. After being missing for three decades, the men are recovered, and are laid to rest, sharing a grave in San Francisco National Cemetery, overlooking San Francisco Bay from Fort Winfield Scott, the Presidio of California.

Today, we pause to remember 2nd Lt. Douglas McDow and Flight Cadet Clarence Thompson.

Now on to this vintage Girard-Perregaux Aero-Compax ref 22441 caliber 285 35mm with a copper colored color change patina dial. It has an engraving to Edward H. Parmer and his number with the Army Air Force (the predecessor to USAF) with an August 4th 1944 date which puts it squarely into World War II. So while it wasn't an officially assigned watch it is one that certainly served. The dial is in great condition; it has just had a total color change due to the radium on the hands and numerals. The case is in equally excellent condition, unpolished and with all bevels intact. It is truly one of the most eye-catching and unique Aero-Compax watches to be found anywhere. Frank O’B, Nehin Jr. served in the Army Air Force Pacific Theater World War II. He flew on a P - 61 Black Widow Night Fighter and was the first airplane to use radar. Frank Jr. returned a hero after the war. Studied Art and Design at R.I.T. and CRANBROOK Academy of Art and Design. He was Creative Director at a large Printing House with a team of WNY’s top creative’s. He married a ballerina Patricia that had two births producing three children! He left the Printing House and started his own firm creating award winning ads and marketing. He then joined a large Exhibit Group and was one of the first to create Branding. Frank was not only a soldier, he inspired many to persue creative careers. His father Frank Sr. was a highly respected Civil Engineer and his mother Eva, her family was Thomas Edison’s Canadian Partner. “Mission 31 - Taking The Fight To The Germans” 80 Years Ago, Today – (Wed) January 27th, 1943, the skies over the port city of Wilhemshaven, Germany: The United States 8th Air Force comes to call with a force of 91 Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses and Consolidated B-24 Liberators. The B-17s are from the following 8th Air Force Bomb Groups: 91st, 303rd, 305th, and 306th. The B-24's belong to the 44th and 93rd Bomb Groups. Due to poor weather the B-24's never find Wilhemshaven, their primary target. By contrast, the B-17's never find their primary target, Vegesack, 31 miles to the southeast. Turning around, the weather clear and the B-17's DO find Wilhemshaven... and Wilhemshaven finds out what steel rain is like. In an aerial extension of the Battle Of The Atlantic, the B-17's deploy 132 tons of general purpose demolition bombs from 25,000 feet over the German Navy shipyard located in the city. This is the first combat penetration of German airspace by the 8th Air Force, and the first American daylight bombing raid of German Territory. The combat honors of first bombs dropped go to the 306th Bomb Group, whose B-17s are shown here, c. late spring 1943. Casualties are light: only 3 planes are lost and 26 men killed. It is a very very light start to what will become a slaughterhouse in the skies over Continental Europe in the coming year.
