The Scottish folk singer Ian Campbell was born on June 10th 1933 in Aberdeen.
Ian Campbell was the eldest of four children born to Betty and Dave Campbell, who were described as “Aberdonian born and bred”
As well as both parents and Ian and his sisters Lorna and Winnie, The Singing Campbells also included Bob Cooney, their Aberdonian lodger who came for a week and became, as Hall wrote, “a member of the family by adoption”.
As well as both parents and Ian and his sisters Lorna and Winnie, The Singing Campbells also included Bob Cooney, their Aberdonian lodger who came for a week and became, as Hall wrote, “a member of the family by adoption”.In 1946 they moved to Birmingham. There the apprentice jewellery engraver discovered the local branch of the Workers’ Music Association and joined its Clarion Youth Choir. When skiffle boomed in 1957-58, a splinter Clarion Skiffle Group was formed, avoiding the standard repertoire, they incorporated, what Campbell described as “a political element in our approach”, with Scottish farming material, Jacobite songs and industrial and mining songs being their chosen songbooks.
Campbell’s socially engaged songs guaranteed bookings, but Clarion already had a Clarion Folk Group. “I wanted to call us the Cornkisters,” Campbell told me, “because that’s a name of a type of Aberdeen folk song. Everyone said it was a silly name. Temporarily, because they had asked to book Ian Campbell and his group, we called ourselves the Ian Campbell Folk Group and we never got around to changing it.” He identified two great inspirations: Ewan MacColl and Bert Lloyd, both singers with their roots in socialism.
In 1962 Topic, a label that had begun life as a WMA offshoot, put out a live recording from The Crown on Birmingham’s Station Street. The result was the Ian Campbell Folk Group’s EP Ceilidh At The Crown – probably the country’s first live folk club recording. In 1963 they signed to Transatlantic, immediately releasing their debut LP, This Is The Ian Campbell Folk Group that same year. With a secure folk club base, the Jug of Punch, as a residency, and a record contract, they went full-time in 1963. That same year Walther Klæbel, a young Copenhagen-based jazz promoter, saw them in London. Exultant, he organised their first Danish tour. “We never looked back because twice a year we would go to Denmark and do a national tour […] for about 12 years.”
While living in England, Paul Simon picked up on “The Sun Is Burning” a nuclear protest song penned by Ian, covering it on Simon and Garfunkel’s 1964 debut LP, The Dubliners would later cover the song too.
After Ian disbanded the group in 1978 as a TV editor, most notably with TV AM and as a community arts worker in Dudley.
Although they only released 10 albums and three EP’s/Singles they are still remembered as one of the only folk bands that broke into mainstream music for a while, however their rivals, The Spinners really stole the limelight in the 60’s.
I think though that Ian’s name will always be remember for the band three of his sons have been involved with for the past 40 years or so, UB40. The ethnic make-up of the band’s original line-up was diverse, with musicians of English, Welsh, Irish, Jamaican, Scottish and Yemeni parentage and have had over 50 hit singles, selling over 70 million records worldwide.
Ian Campbell passed away on 24th November 2012, from cancer, he was 79.

Foodie - September Book List
This month’s list is all about food! In all of these novels, food plays a central role in the story or character’s lives. As a foodie myself, I’m really excited about these books! I hope you like them too :)
As always, please vote for which of these books we should read. Link is at the bottom of this post.
And on to the books...
Cinnamon and Gunpowder, by Eli Brown
Tumblr media
The year is 1819, and the renowned chef Owen Wedgwood has been kidnapped by the ruthless pirate Mad Hannah Mabbot. He will be spared, she tells him, as long as he puts exquisite food in front of her every Sunday without fail. To appease the red-haired captain, Wedgwood gets cracking with the meager supplies on board. His first triumph at sea is actual bread, made from a sourdough starter that he leavens in a tin under his shirt throughout a roaring battle, as men are cutlassed all around him. Soon he’s making tea-smoked eel and brewing pineapple-banana cider. But Mabbot—who exerts a curious draw on the chef—is under siege. Hunted by a deadly privateer and plagued by a saboteur hidden on her ship, she pushes her crew past exhaustion in her search for the notorious Brass Fox. As Wedgwood begins to sense a method to Mabbot’s madness, he must rely on the bizarre crewmembers he once feared: Mr. Apples, the fearsome giant who loves to knit; Feng and Bai, martial arts masters sworn to defend their captain; and Joshua, the deaf cabin boy who becomes the son Wedgwood never had.
Quentins, by Maeve Binchy
Tumblr media
Is it possible to tell the story of a generation and a city through the history of a restaurant? Ella Brady thinks so. She wants to film a documentary about Quentins that will capture the spirit of Dublin from the 1970s to the present day. And Quentins has a thousand stories to tell: tales of love, of betrayal, of revenge; of times when it looked ready for success and times when it seemed as if it must close in failure. But as Ella uncovers more of what has gone on at Quentins, she begins to wonder whether some secrets should be kept that way...
Sourdough, by Robin Sloan
Tumblr media
Lois Clary is a software engineer at General Dexterity, a San Francisco robotics company with world-changing ambitions. She codes all day and collapses at night, her human contact limited to the two brothers who run the neighborhood hole-in-the-wall from which she orders dinner every evening. Then, disaster! Visa issues. The brothers close up shop, and fast. But they have one last delivery for Lois: their culture, the sourdough starter used to bake their bread. She must keep it alive, they tell her—feed it daily, play it music, and learn to bake with it. Lois is no baker, but she could use a roommate, even if it is a needy colony of microorganisms. Soon, not only is she eating her own homemade bread, she’s providing loaves daily to the General Dexterity cafeteria. The company chef urges her to take her product to the farmer’s market, and a whole new world opens up. When Lois comes before the jury that decides who sells what at Bay Area markets, she encounters a close-knit club with no appetite for new members. But then, an alternative emerges: a secret market that aims to fuse food and technology. But who are these people, exactly?
The Kitchen Daughter, by Jael McHenry
Tumblr media
After the unexpected death of her parents, painfully shy and sheltered 26-year-old Ginny Selvaggio seeks comfort in cooking from family recipes. But the rich, peppery scent of her Nonna’s soup draws an unexpected visitor into the kitchen: the ghost of Nonna herself, dead for twenty years, who appears with a cryptic warning (“do no let her…”) before vanishing like steam from a cooling dish. A haunted kitchen isn’t Ginny’s only challenge. Her domineering sister, Amanda, (aka “Demanda”) insists on selling their parents’ house, the only home Ginny has ever known. As she packs up her parents’ belongings, Ginny finds evidence of family secrets she isn’t sure how to unravel. She knows how to turn milk into cheese and cream into butter, but she doesn’t know why her mother hid a letter in the bedroom chimney, or the identity of the woman in her father’s photographs. The more she learns, the more she realizes the keys to these riddles lie with the dead, and there’s only one way to get answers: cook from dead people’s recipes, raise their ghosts, and ask them.
Five Quarters of the Orange, by Joanne Harris
Tumblr media
When Framboise Simon returns to a small village on the banks of the Loire, the locals do not recognize her as the daughter of the infamous Mirabelle Dartigen - the woman they still hold responsible for a terrible tragedy that took place during the German occupation decades before. Although Framboise hopes for a new beginning she quickly discovers that past and present are inextricably intertwined. Nowhere is this truth more apparent than in the scrapbook of recipes she has inherited from her dead mother. With this book, Framboise re-creates her mother's dishes, which she serves in her small creperie. And yet as she studies the scrapbook - searching for clues to unlock the contradiction between her mother's sensuous love of food and often cruel demeanor - she begins to recognize a deeper meaning behind Mirabelle's cryptic scribbles. Within the journal's tattered pages lies the key to what actually transpired the summer Framboise was nine years old.

EasterCon 2023 Con Report - Books
EasterCon is really all about the books. So many new authors to discover, and favourite authors to revisit - and actually meet! I've listened to so many interesting people speak on panels and then gone looking for the books they've written over the years.
So I came home with a much heavier suitcase than I arrived with, thanks in part to Books on the Hill in the dealers' room. I'd been looking for Paul Cornell's Lychford stories for some time, and they had one copy of The Lights Go Out in Lychford. I didn't care where it came in the series - I grabbed it.
Then I looked more closely at their display and found Kate Elliot's Unconquerable Sun. I heard her read a passage from this at Dublin WorldCon, where she described it as gender-swapped Alexander the Great IN SPACE! Ticking all my boxes right there!
As I was paying for those, I saw the last hardback they had of The Sinister Booksellers of Bath, by Garth Nix, the sequel to The Left-Handed Booksellers of London. This made me very excited - I loved the first book, adored Merlin (and the Lord Peter Wimsey reference!) and I am a left-handed bookseller. So was the lady behind the dealers' table - we've got to stick together!
A little way down the aisle my friend got talking to Tim Mendees and David Green, who were selling mostly horror books. He's in the middle of a Cthulu role playing campaign, so they had lots to talk about. I'm not really interested in horror - but I couldn't resist a collection of short stories called The Nookienomicon, which essentially crosses Cthulu with the Carry On films!
David Green also invited us to his book launch in the Tea Lounge, where he read from his latest fantasy novel - an autistic character who has a secret underground library sounds like something I'd enjoy. I failed to write down the title, (I was busy drinking wine at the time) but its in his Empire of Ruin series. I also failed to write down the name of the author he was sharing his book launch with. (Sorry - I enjoyed the reading, though).
Meanwhile, back in the dealers' room, I passed a table and noticed the name David Wake. "That sounds familiar," I thought, and realised he is the writer of The Derring-Do Club series. We went to a dramatised reading of one of the early books in the series at Mancunicon, which was enormous fun, and there are now two more books - Death on the Suez and Sisterhood of the Death-Goddess. The series is about three Victorian sisters who go on Adventures.
There were also secondhand books on sale around the dealers' room. I picked up Lightship, a book of art by Jim Burns, who was in the art show, and the World Fantasy Con 2013 hardback, which has art by Alan Lee in it, and articles or stories by Neil Gaiman, Joanne Harris, Brian Aldiss, Stephen Baxter and lots of other good stuff! There was also a stack of short stories by Brian Aldiss which were free - Sex and the Black Machine. I took three copies, to give to classic SF fans I know.

thanks kindly to @illegalcerebral for being sweet enough to tag me! more getting to know you stuff
relationship status: single, but I’m about to be writing my dissertation so I might as well be married to it :’D
favorite color: black. it’s basic but it’s true!
favorite food: rare steak. like, bloody.
song stuck in your head: keep breathing - ingrid michaelson
last thing you googled: an interview with briscoe park, my second favorite photographer
time: almost 10-ish when I started writing this, but I’ve had to get up and handle things so it’s been a while
dream trip: Ireland!! I was supposed to go to dublin this summer, but had to bow out due to cash/family stuff. or just, like, a solid week on a beach.
last book you read: the pallbearer’s club by art barbara paul tremblay
last book you enjoyed reading: the aforementioned! it was really sweet in a way I didn’t expect, I had a lot of fun with it
last book you hated reading: I wouldn’t say “hated,” but I wound up DNFing this collection of short stories bc the guy who wrote them didn’t really edit and made one of my least favorite typos lol. shows what I get for picking them up just bc a favorite artist of mine did the cover :’D
bonus!
favorite thing to cook/bake: I have two simple pasta recipes I enjoy rotating, and both involve copious amounts of lemon.
favorite craft to do in your free time: I make very, very rudimentary DIY edits to my clothes (usually cutting sleeves/collars/midriffs for hot weather) and idk if it counts but I’m finally taking all the pins I’ve collected over the years and am slowly sorting them into ita bags
most niche dislike: “people who don’t do their research” is the only way I know how to word it?? I see a lot of tourists when I’m in nola who are in sandals made for walking around malls at most and big-ass expensive status bags not made for the space or the weather and I’m like “oh babe, you’re gonna have a bad time. :’D” lately I’ve been talking a lot on twitter about how lowkey irritated I can be when people only interact with a text on a surface level and don’t try to get into the historical factors behind it. but this is not how people have to approach fandom at all, and that’s totally fine!! I’m just a nitpicky nerd who makes everything a research project when they don’t have to lol
opinion on the circus: acrobats - neat! clowns - coming around to them, thanks to the work of @eldritchcircus! performing animals - historically, not a big fan! :’D
do you have a sense of direction: yes, but I’ve been inside so much the last few years I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s withered somewhat.
no pressure tags: (incoming huge swarm again)  @rosemaremembrance @maximoffwxnda @bigtiddythanos @runawaywerewolf @illegalcerebral @lightinthedarkuniverse @pondering-and-wondering @lorna-d-m @scuttle-buttle @imalsonotsure @eldritchcircus @raven-blood-13 @creme-bruhlee @mypoisonedvine @somethingthatsaysbubbles @darkestamralime and anyone else who would like to! it’s always nice to hear about people! <3

The ALMOST complete list of Benny Boy’s doing while I was away
almost complete cuz I probably missed somethinggies?
Okie the first thing I could find was that boy was partying with Will Poulter in some fancee members only club in London. No luck out there I suppose cuz he still a naked faced rat x.x also just a personal note, that Will guy seems to be a smart one? Apparently he was in Ireland the other day and he went through the Shannon airport and not through that shitfuck factory which Dublin airport is. Which like smart big brain decision, so Benny? I do approve of this relation 😘
THEN OMG!! ACTUAL NEWS WHICH I MISSED? Soooooo we actually starting very fucking wild? CUZ BOY GOT HIMSELF AN ACTUAL JOB? sorry if I’m not making any sense here whatsoever but I was expecting to come back to see his flat ass unemployed? Unless someone is pulling a pisser on good ol’ Coral and he still bitchless and jobless ;c oh and this explains the instagram follows of Ian and Mark a while back cuz they are both in the film too. ANYWAYS!
So there’s this film... The Critic is the title. It’s based on a book by Anthony Quinn. Here’s like the three articles I found on it at Deadline, Collider and this lil piece by Heather who is clearly into Benny! All of them articles are putting Benny aside and as supporting character but like lookin at other actors involved Imma not surprised he’s pushed more to the back. So I checked IMDb and what the book is about, and what it says is that Benny’s character is named Stephen, and the book has a character named Stephen Wyley. From the couple of reviews I seen it’s hard to say how big his part in the book actually is but yeee I’d say not extremely big. And there are going to be changes to the material anyways cuz Mark Strong’s character, from what I can tell, is not in the book? Or at least he is not mentioned in any of the pieces I looked through.
ANYWAYS! So Stephen is a painter, he is also a married man with kids! And he has an affair with Nina (Arterton’s character). He is also beardless. A crime as the film is a thriller or crime something something. Checks out! ALSO would say that life imitates art but that’s..................... Boy was doing some method acting I guess x.x
ONTO THE NEXT!
So to celebrate (lol) Benny took his lil ass to Wimbledon, cuz as we all know Benny has four character traits (one more than a TS4 sim!) and these are Queen, When Harry Met Sally, his shitty degree and... TENNIS! So it’s weird alright? Cuz he posted a selfie (on July 3rd) and then another boy’s definition of cute diy collage three days later. The latter was SUPPOSEDLY a thankies to Ralph Lauren. What I could spy with ma lil eye was what Imma pretty sure are the exact fucking same rags he wore before. None of them are by any of RL labels as far as I can tell x.x and yes I do have boy’s whole wardrobe memorized, cuz he has like two pair of pants and two cardigans. So it’s nothing impressive. Hold them applauses. And here is his naked face (a rant about that Im gonna post separately cuz here Imma trying to be informative lol, also the rant is like 9k words as of now sooooooooo)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Couple days later his naked ass was caught on tape in Camden
Tumblr media
And his new hunting ground seem to be Camden. He livin his Rocky dream at a gym there! Can’t post the video ;c gonna post separately ;c
AND NOW ONTO INSTAGRAM!
Soooooo boy was pretty active there. A lil I love ye to Dead Poets Society and ofc he could not stop himself from tagging Ethan xd he keeps doing this right? I mean tagging famous folks but they do be ignoring him every time... Remember the West Side Story post?
What more...... He liked this post of Taron Egerton as soon as it was posted x.x oh and he followed a singer Eliza.
So yeeeeesh that would be it from our boy x.x the duckie face will not be discussed here as I found out it might be a health hazard ;c will answer the pucker up queries separately in ma pink hazmat suit 🧚‍♀️

Haha oh well that’s cool, one day….who knows. I’ve already done two studies so I think we’ve got enough of uni 😉. Ooeh art history, that sounds cool, one of my friends studied it!
Yes it’s one of those ‘either or’ thingies. You go for a blue Monday because your mom thought it would be nice or you’re just doing it for forever 😂. Oh well that’s definitely a very long time too! Yes I agree!!
Haha that’s the spirit! 💪🏼
Yes agree, they just drag everything on for way too long. It doesn’t do it justice with the lack of quality it gets after so many seasons. Well if you ever decide to watch it let me know what you think! Ah okay well that might explain it then. Hahah you apparently really know how to sell something then if they all got on board with it.
Yeah actually I guess that is true hahah. Happy to hear that! Oh that’s so nice, where did you go and what (fun) things did you do? Well right now I am on a two week break from work, bless 🩵. I have two trips planned, one to Dublin and one just in my own country. I had a concert this weekend and had/have some plans to meet up with friends so definitely a lot of nice things to be looking forward to. What about you?
- 🫐
Yeah I think two studies is enough for me too so far, but I think I'd enjoy going back to it to study for fun one day! Not in the foreseeable future though, I had enough with uni the first time for at least a couple years. I studied it briefly at school and I loved it! I put it on my list of possible things to study at uni but ended up not doing it.
Exactly! One of my friends did ballet but I don't think she lasted longer than a couple months, you either love it or you absolutely hate it.
They do and it's very sad! You have a nice TV show and they drag it so much it no longer looks anything like what you started watching and what you enjoyed so much (I will never forgive or forget what they did to Supernatural). I will! To be honest, I don't think it was me selling it nicely rather than me insisting all week that we could watch Fringe at 9.30pm on Saturdays and wearing them all down jsjsjs
Mallorca! I went around the island with my sister and my cousin and she showed us around, it was a lot of fun, but it was much colder than expected and I've ended up losing my voice for the whole week. It's still been a lot of fun though! Enjoy your break then! Oooh I've been to Dubling before and it was gorgeous, I hope you'll enjoy your stay there, and your other trip too ^^
Enjoy your concert too! Who are you seeing? Me I've had a book club meeting and tomorrow I'm going out with some friends, other than that it's been a calm weekend, I would like to have my voice back soon jsjsjs

Other artists with unusual style. Part 1
Malika Favre:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Malika Favre is a French illustrator and graphic artist based in Barcelona. Her style of works could be characterized by pure minimalism within Pop art and Op art, where it sometimes described as 'Pop Art meets Op Art'.
How does Malika Favre create her art?
She does this through experimenting with metaphors, positive and negative space, shadows, layers and many other key tools. Photography is a significant tool in this initial stage, helping Favre to extract colours, patterns and graphic elements.
What software does Malika Favre use?
This is what Malika Favre's answer for this question: ''I've stopped sketching by hand. I now sketch with Illustrator, sometimes in black and white, other times in color, to draft the composition and idea. The most important part of the process is to generate ideas. Everyone has their own way and there aren't any rules.''
What are some interesting facts about Malika Favre?
Favre was born with a severe case of strabismus, or crossed eyes. It was surgically corrected when she was very young, but she still sees perspective differently from the rest of us. “I can't see 3-D, for example, so if you give me 3-D glasses, I see blurry.
My opinions for this artist as her style is showing off, negative spaces mixed with positive spaces as she uses such bright and bold colours as well to show the complex to show the colours compared very well like white mixed with red and different shades of blues which is very well done for Malika.

Dan Hipp
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dan Hipp was born on 11 September 1978 in Fresno, California, USA. Dan is an art director and writer, known for Teen Titans GO! To the Movies (2018), Marvel Snap (2022) and Manga Motion Comics (2009).
Dan Hipp is a cartoon and comic book artist well known for his work with Warner Media, specifically DC Comics.
Prior to working as an artist, Daniel Hipp attended Edison High School in Fresno, California. He went into further studying at the University of California in Irving. Sometime after his schooling was done, Dan got jobs with big name animation studios, including Warner Bros. Animation, Random House, DC Comics, and, most recently, Cartoon Network.
As of right now, Hipp once specialized as an art director in Teen Titans Go!. His own personal art can be seen numerous times throughout the show, as many of the pictures and signs throughout the Titans Tower are Dan's creations. In addition, many Teen Titans Go! comic book cover is the work of Hipp's hands.
My opinions for this artist, that he also creates lot of positive spaces on his art works which I think that he does this to show the more details on the works so that people can see the whole page and not specific parts and he uses lot of bright colours that he used on his arts.

Billy Strings' Europe 22 posters, ranked from worst to best
#10 : Cologne, Germany
This one is a little too busy for its own good, evoking some of the worst tropes of psychedelic art. A lot of disparate elements that don't come together. I like a good wizard, but this guy isn't winning me over. Colors are kinda cool.
Tumblr media
#9 : Glasgow, Scotland
I appreciate that the lion is a reference to the local football club, but I find the design underwhelming. The blank background is fine, but II want something a little more interesting than Lion with Billy Strings in the mane. Can't believe this was the tour closer.
Tumblr media
#8 : Berlin, Germany
On first look, this one was a little underwhelming. But I enjoy the dynamic of the little guy and the big robot - reminds me of The Iron Giant, but with even earlier pulp sci-fi aesthetics.
Tumblr media
#7 : Manchester, England
This one is busy, not unlike the Cologne one, but here I get a better sense of what I should be looking at initially, with the busy details adding interesting story elements. This one grew on me.
Tumblr media
#6 : Dublin, Ireland
I appreciate the references to Irish history/architecture. And I love that it's the only horizontal poster in the bunch. But, especially in color, the intense line work starts to grate. Supposed to evoke like fantasy book illustrations, starts to look more like a comic book.
Tumblr media
#6 : Manchester, England
This one is busy, not unlike the Cologne one, but here I get a better sense of what I should be looking at, and what story is being told. We're in some sorta post-apocalypse.
#5 : Amsterdam, Netherlands
This one should probably be lower- it's got the business in design that I've knocked other posters for. This one gets as high as it does due to its subject matter- any drawing of Reptiles playing Bluegrass deserves to be top 5.
Tumblr media
#4 : Copenhagen, Denmark
I appreciate the surrealism - the mustache going through the gauges which turns into the name, the eyeballs. I enjoy that we're getting slight variations on the primary colors. I dig it.
Tumblr media
#3 : London, England
Really enjoying this abstraction - I'm not 100% sure what I'm looking at, but I like it. Evokes the mid-60s London art scene. The pastel purple is especially rare in Billy's posters.
Tumblr media
#2 : Oslo Norway
The monochromatic color scheme and the faces of the figures create an almost melancholy, almost serene scene.
Tumblr media
#1 : Stockholm, Sweden
I mean, just look at it! Strong colors that contrast each other beautifully. You take the name
Tumblr media
Some really fun posters from a really fun tour! Excited to see what Billy and the Boys have for us in 2023!

This is the list of book suggestions that were gathered for our first book club. We then voted for the book that we wanted to read for our first meeting.
Documents of Contemporary Art: Participation, edited by Claire Bishop
The desire to move viewers out of the role of passive observers and into the role of producers is one of the hallmarks of twentieth-century art. This tendency can be found in practices and projects ranging from El Lissitzky's exhibition designs to Allan Kaprow's happenings, from minimalist objects to installation art. More recently, this kind of participatory art has gone so far as to encourage and produce new social relationships. Guy Debord's celebrated argument that capitalism fragments the social bond has become the premise for much relational art seeking to challenge and provide alternatives to the discontents of contemporary life. This publication collects texts that place this artistic development in historical and theoretical context.
Participation begins with writings that provide a theoretical framework for relational art, with essays by Umberto Eco, Bertolt Brecht, Roland Barthes, Peter Bürger, Jen-Luc Nancy, Edoaurd Glissant, and Félix Guattari, as well as the first translation into English of Jacques Rancière's influential "Problems and Transformations in Critical Art." The book also includes central writings by such artists as Lygia Clark and Hélio Oiticica, Joseph Beuys, Augusto Boal, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Thomas Hirschhorn, and Rirkrit Tiravanija. And it features recent critical and curatorial debates, with discussions by Lars Bang Larsen, Nicolas Bourriaud, Hal Foster, and Hans-Ulrich Obrist.
Ways of Seeing, by John Berger
John Berger’s now classic article "Ways of Seeing" (1972) revolutionarily, for his time, analyses the manner in which men and women are culturally represented, and the subsequent results these representations have on their conduct and self as well and mutual perception.
The Sublime, edited by Simon Morley
In a world where technology, spectacle and excess seem to eclipse former concepts of nature, the individual and society, what might be the characteristics of a contemporary sublime? If there is any consensus it is in the notion that the sublime represents a taking to the limits, to the point at which fixities begin to fragment. This anthology examines how ideas of the sublime are explored in the work of contemporary artists and theorists, in relation to the unpresentable, transcendence, terror, nature, technology, the uncanny and altered states.
Book of Mutter, by Kate Zambreno
Composed over thirteen years, Kate Zambreno's Book of Mutter is a tender and disquieting meditation on the ability of writing, photography, and memory to embrace shadows while in the throes -- and dead calm -- of grief. Book of Mutter is both primal and sculpted, shaped by the author's searching, indexical impulse to inventory family apocrypha in the wake of her mother's death. The text spirals out into a kind of fractured anatomy of melancholy that comes to contain critical reflections on the likes of Roland Barthes, Louise Bourgeois, Henry Darger, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha , Peter Handke, and others. Zambreno has modeled the book's formless form on Bourgeois's Cells sculptures -- at once channeling the volatility of autobiography, pain, and childhood, yet hemmed by a solemn sense of entering ritualistic or sacred space.
Neither memoir, essay, nor poetry, Book of Mutter is an uncategorizable text that draws upon a repertoire of genres to write into and against silence. It is a haunted text, an accumulative archive of myth and memory that seeks its own undoing, driven by crossed desires to resurrect and exorcise the past. Zambreno weaves a complex web of associations, relics, and references, elevating the prosaic scrapbook into a strange and intimate postmortem/postmodern theater.
Aliens and Anorexia, by Chris Kraus
First published in 2000, Chris Kraus’s second novel, Aliens & Anorexia, defined a female form of chance that is both emotional and radical. Unfolding like a set of Chinese boxes, with storytelling and philosophy informing each other, the novel weaves together the lives of earnest visionaries and failed artists. Its characters include Simone Weil, the first radical philosopher of sadness; the artist Paul Thek; Kraus herself; and “Africa,” Kraus’s virtual S&M partner, who is shooting a big-budget Hollywood film in Namibia while Kraus holes up in the Northwest woods to chronicle the failure of Gravity & Grace, her own low-budget independent film.
In Aliens & Anorexia, Kraus makes a case for empathy as the ultimate perceptive tool, and reclaims anorexia from the psychoanalytic girl-ghetto of poor “self-esteem.” Anorexia, Kraus writes, could be an attempt to leave the body altogether: a rejection of the cynicism that this culture hands us through its food.
In Free Fall: A Thought Experiment on Vertical Perspective, by Hito Steyerl
Available on the e-flux website: http://www.e-flux.com/journal/24/67860/in-free-fall-a-thought-experiment-on-vertical-perspective/
The Temporality of the Landscape, by Tim Ingold
“In Tim Ingold's article, there are two themes present; that "...human life is a process that involves the passage of time," and that "...this life-process is also the process of information of the landscapes in which people have lived". Through the use of these themes and his methodological structure, Ingold argues that the landscape can be read as a text. First, he defines the terms landscape and temporality, and second, he introduces a new word, "taskscape", and considers how this relates to landscape. Finally, to further prove his point, the author attempts to "read" the landscape of a well-known painting, The Harvesters, by Bruegel, in which he interprets the temporality of this landscape. This article is useful in understanding cultural landscapes in that it encourages the researcher to think about an often missing, yet integral part of the interpretation of landscapes: time. The researcher is also made to question the relationship of the dimension of time to a particular landscape.” [E. Martin]
The Indiscipline of Painting, by Daniel Sturgis
Essay and catalogue texts to exhibition.
 High Rise, by JG Ballard
High-Rise is a 1975 novel by British writer J. G. Ballard. The story describes the disintegration of a luxury high-rise building as its affluent residents gradually descend into violent chaos.
Two Hito Steyrl essays, to be read in combination:
Politics of the archive, Translations in film: http://eipcp.net/transversal/0608/steyerl/en  and In Defense of the Poor Image:

The Secret History, by Donna Tartt
Under the influence of their charismatic classics professor, a group of clever, eccentric misfits at an elite New England college discover a way of thinking and living that is a world away from the humdrum existence of their contemporaries. But when they go beyond the boundaries of normal morality they slip gradually from obsession to corruption and betrayal, and at last - inexorably - into evil.
Curating Research, edited by Paul O'Neill and Mick Wilson. Specifically the text called ‘The Complete Curator’
This anthology of newly commissioned texts presents a series of detailed examples of the different kinds of knowledge production that have recently emerged within the field of curatorial practice. The first volume of its kind to provide an overview of the theme of research within contemporary curating, Curating Research marks a new phase in developments of the profession globally. Consisting of case studies and contextual analyses by curators, artists, critics and academics, including Hyunjoo Byeon, Carson Chan and Joanna Warsza, Chris Fite-Wassilak, Olga Fernandez Lopez, Kate Fowle, Maja and Reuben Fowkes, Liam Gillick, Georgina Jackson, Sidsel Nelund, Simon Sheikh, Henk Slager, tranzit.hu, Jelena Vestic, Marion von Osten and Vivian Ziherl, and edited by curators Paul O'Neill and Mick Wilson, the book is an indispensible resource for all those interested in the current state of art and in the intersection between research and curating that underlies exhibition-making today.
The Argonauts, Maggie Nelson
A brave, fascinating memoir about love, gender, gender theory, having children, death, writing, and the modern family. Maggie Nelson, an established poet and prose writer, details her love for and relationship with Harry Dodge, a charismatic, gender-fluid artist ('are you a man or a woman?' the narrator wonders, but it just doesn't matter). In a brilliantly-written account that is moving as well as fascinating, Nelson charts her thoughts and feelings about becoming a step-parent, her pregnancy, Harry's operation and testosterone injections, and the couple's complex joys in queer-family creation.
Staying with the Trouble, by Donna Haraway
In the midst of spiraling ecological devastation, multispecies feminist theorist Donna J. Haraway offers provocative new ways to reconfigure our relations to the earth and all its inhabitants. She eschews referring to our current epoch as the Anthropocene, preferring to conceptualize it as what she calls the Chthulucene, as it more aptly and fully describes our epoch as one in which the human and nonhuman are inextricably linked in tentacular practices. The Chthulucene, Haraway explains, requires sym-poiesis, or making-with, rather than auto-poiesis, or self-making. Learning to stay with the trouble of living and dying together on a damaged earth will prove more conducive to the kind of thinking that would provide the means to building more livable futures. Theoretically and methodologically driven by the signifier SF—string figures, science fact, science fiction, speculative feminism, speculative fabulation, so far—Staying with the Trouble further cements Haraway's reputation as one of the most daring and original thinkers of our time.

The song is the Child ballad  181, Roud 334,  The Bonnie Earl O' Moray, a popular ballad that dates back to the 17th century.

FAMILY
Tumblr media
Father: Noal Marvin Drew
Born on Halloween 1928 to Easton and Aideen Drew in a wizarding village in the Appalachian Mountains. The oldest of five children, three boys and two girls. (Noal, Skylar, Baylor, Easton Junior, and Kinley.)
His grandparents were well known blood purists, his mother coming from the Edelwood family (one of the pure 10) and his father being distantly related to 27 members of the sacred 28 and one of the pure 10 in the US.
His parents did not buy into their ideologies and they were disowned and driven out of their home village of Vespers.
Unfortunately, most of his siblings did buy into purism and the only one Noal still speaks to is Easton Junior.
He had a very happy and chaotic childhood.
Noal was sorted into Horned Serpent in Illvermony and was on their broom racing team.
Became a Cursebreaker after graduation and worked with his sister Skylar.
He met Ilse while breaking a curse for the O’Malley family and they started writing back and forth. They got married in 1950 and had Bailey in 1952, Jericho in 1965, Wednesday in 1972, and Rosie in 1979.
Noal and Ilse immigrated to Ireland in 1978 so Ilse could be closer to her family after her father died and to have a new start after a falling out with Skylar over blood purism. They brought Aideen with them.
Noal loves all his children/family and is always looking for Jericho and Danny.
Faceclaim: Harrison Ford.
Tumblr media
Mother: Ilse Marie Drew (Nee Edelwood).
Born on June 8th 1928, in Traelee Ireland to Maxwell (born in Appalachia, USA) and Mary Edelwood. She had one sister named June who died in 1948 due to complications from Pneumonia.
Ilse had a very pleasant childhood and would often play with her maternal cousin Saorise, who lived nearby.
Ilse was sorted into Ravenclaw and played keeper for their Quidditch team.
After graduation, she worked with her maternal grandfather on his tree farm and opened a small stand for drinks that she had from the fruit of the fruit trees. Here she met Noal who was helping her grandfather get rid of a curse on one of his older trees. They started writing and were married on May 28th 1950 and Ilse immigrated to America with her husband in 1951.
Ilse became an American citizen in 1952 a month before Bailey was born.
Moved back to Ireland in 1978 after her father died to help her mother and to keep her children away from Skylar.
She loves her family and her husband. No one is allowed to bad mouth him.
Faceclaim: Maureen O'Hara
Tumblr media
Older Brother: Bailey John Drew
Born on March 30th, 1952.
Was sorted into Wampus House at illvermorny and played chaser on their Quidditch team.
Works as a train engineer. Was never interested in magical work.
Very quiet. Doesn’t talk a lot and when he does, you’d better listen. because it’s important.
Wednesday isn’t all that close to him but she does love him.
Faceclaim: Young Clint Eastwood.
Tumblr media
Brother: Jericho Jacob Drew
Born on Thanksgiving Day 1965.
Jericho is a highly intelligent Ravenclaw with low wisdom and enjoys things he finds challenging, which is why he helped Danny hunt the vaults.
A very sweet person and a good older brother, in direct contrast to Danny, who is an asshole.
He becomes an archaeologist after being freed from the vault and swears off cursebreaking as a career.
Wednesday adores him even though he can be “A bit reckless and stupid.”
Faceclaim: River Phoenix.
Sister: Rosie June Drew
Tumblr media
Born on July 4th, 1979.
The baby of the family and a future Gryffindor. Very adventurous, always giving her mother and Wednesday a heart attack.
Wants to be a Cursebreaker like her dad and cousins, her favorite being Sean.
Rosie thinks Wednesday is annoying and a busybody. Wednesday thinks she is annoying and too careless. They love each other.
Faceclaim: Young Liliana Mumy.
Cousins: Rubin, Wren, Fiadah, Danny, Bryn, Hecate, Sean, and Kit. Also Evangeline.
She gets along best with Hecate but even then they fight a lot.
Being around Evangeline is a bit awkward but it’s not her circus or her clowns so she treats Evangeline like she would anyone else- with condescension and like she can’t read.
They all love each other, don’t get me wrong, but they tend to rub one other the wrong way.
Wednesday treats Rubin and Wren as aunts due to the age difference.
She tends to avoid Fiadah like the plague, the woman makes Wednesday VERY uncomfortable.
Pets: Rat named Bobbin and a Barn owl named Spectacles.

MBTI Description: "Quick-witted and audacious, Debaters aren’t afraid to disagree with the status quo. In fact, they’re not afraid to disagree with pretty much anything or anyone. Few things light up people with this personality type more than a bit of verbal sparring – and if the conversation veers into controversial terrain, so much the better."
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
Pre-Hogwarts Childhood:
Wednesday was born in the small Wizarding town of Redwood in 1972. Her Paternal grandfather died shortly before she was born.
She had a fairly pleasant early childhood, following Jericho and Bailey around their property and visiting with her Mimi (great grandmother) who lived in a house on the property
Her Mimi died in her sleep when Wednesday was 6. Jericho and Wednesday found her.
They immigrated to America not long after her maternal grandfather died and left Bailey behind as he had no desire to move to Ireland or be anywhere near "that death eater shit."
Jacob went missing alongside Jacob after searching for the cursed vaults.
Hogwarts Years:
Trying to google everything would only frustrate me and waste my time, so I’m not going into detail.
Becomes a prefect in her third year.
Wednesday helps with the vaults and with research on them.
Second Wizarding War:
Forced to go into hiding during the war due to her marriage to Felix and they are seperated after being found out by Purists.
After being held captive for several months while the Death Eaters tried to get Felix on their side, she managed to escape
Wednesday joined her husband in Romania shortly before having Raven. They housed refugees in their home and Granny (Aideen).
Adulthood:
Wednesday spent the rest of her life in Romania with Felix writing and studying Muggle ghosts, which she refers to as haints.
Aideen dies a very old woman in Wednesdays home.
Death:
Wednesday dies of a stroke at the age of 98, a decade before Felix. She left two children, four grandchildren, and eight grandchildren.
MISCELLANEOUS
Wednesday enjoys American action movies, her favorites being Terminator and Speed.
She likes her own children but not other people's.
Can't carry a tune and is tone deaf.
Considered becoming a train engineer if she turned out to be a Squib and still really likes trains.
Mimi taught her to knit and Wednesday finished her final project: scarves for their family Christmas.

hello!! i’m kq ( aka kelsey quinn! ) i’m twenty five, livin in the est, usin she / her pronouns!! much like the good buddy who turned me on to this rp, i don’t know a ton about percy jackson!! but mythology was one of the few subjects that held my attention in school, so i hoe i have a good handle on it! :D for now, i manage a comic book store from thursdays - sundays, so i’m scarce those times but i’m usually on discord!!
⟨ ABIGAIL COWEN. CIS FEMALE. SHE / HER ⟩ though the mist might prevent some from seeing it, AISLING DUNN is actually a descendant of H Y P N O S. it’s still a question of whether or not the TWENTY-THREE year old PAINTING MAJOR from DUBLIN, IRELAND has taken after their godly parent completely, but the demigod is still known to be quite CLEVER & COARSE.
Tumblr media
this got way longer than i intended im so sorry...
𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊𝐆𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃
she was born on march 12th, 1997 to a pair of irish musicians ( conor and dierdre dunn ) and, unwittingly, one greek god ( hypnos ) in dublin, ireland. her parents met and married shortly after her conception and neither of them suspected that conor wasn’t aisling’s father, until she was claimed.
as an only child, her parents didn’t have much to compare her too in terms of overall strangeness. for years, they wrote off her abilities as kids just sayin’ the darndest things. they remained blissfully unaware of the impact of their daughter’s words, rolling their eyes fondly, when she told them about the man in the cave, who came to her in dreams. they smiled and laughed, when she strangers at the supermarket that she thought erwin was a fine name to give a teddy bear, no matter what anyone else said. how were they to know that she was unearthing the fond childhood memories that passersby had almost forgotten?
when she enrolled in primary school, they realized that she was... strange, if not special. she was recognized as a bit of a space case, often staring at nothing in particular, while her teacher droned on. her worksheets were seldom turned in complete. instead, aisling began gifting poorly drawn family portraits on the blank sides of her papers, likenesses plucked from the memories she explored when her mind wandered, in class.
eventually, after her skill had developed and people stopped writing off the stick figures as ‘coincidentally accurate’, people began to truly take notice. they speculated that she was a medium, silently communing with the dead and painting their pictures as she did. how else could she know what her art teacher’s late father looked like? and what color tie he always liked to wear? she had to be a psychic. recipients of her art were always so focused on their perception of the little girl with the gift of sight that they hardly even realized what she had tweaked, brightening up their darkest memories, just so they wouldn’t have to hurt anymore. she hardly even realized, herself.
without a reason to believe otherwise, she told the man in her dreams that she was a psychic, but he knew differently. he told her that that wasn’t so. she was special, yes, but not in the ways that the world thought her to be. hypnos let her in on the secret he’d been keeping for the past twelve years and, just like that, aisling could make sense of herself. once she knew the truth, she chased sleep. she spent as much time as she could, communicating with the one person who understood who she was. he saw her hunger for belonging and pointed her in the direction of the camp nearest to her hometown.
after a summer away, she came home faced with a challenge in morality that she’d never considered, as a child. she came home to a world where she could no longer fit. her party tricks had lost their luster the moment she realized that true value of a memory, however sad, was worth far more than the cheap smiles that her alterations had afforded. with that realization, her art took a darker turn. unable to shift the memories she saw into the light, they haunted her. she now saw their fears and heartbreaks for what they were: unchangeable. and, now, they lived within her, too. putting them to paper was the only way to get them out. but, pieces like those weren’t the kind that could be sent home to mom and dad. pieces like those were the kind that got her meetings with guidance counselors and haunted, fleeting looks from those whose memories she’d never meant to disturb. after a year of that, aisling went back to camp, full time.
once she was a year round resident of the camp, she found herself more comfortable around people who understood; there was nothing she had to hide, among those who were like her. each one of them was fighting an uphill battle of their own. they didn’t have to hide it. even if she never allowed herself to get too close, aisling never felt all that far away, at camp.
at eonia, aisling spends most of her days painting, sleeping, or working. raised by a pair of mortal musicians, finding a job at fireside records felt like a natural progression. where her godly parent thrives in silence, she finds her comfort in noise. it’s easier to block out the things she doesn’t need to see when there’s something immediate for her to focus on. at the other end of that spectrum, aisling finds her mind most open in visual arts club, trying to keep her other creative skills sharp, while she keeps her primary focus on painting. in search of inspiration, her mind reaches out in tendrils, dipping into another’s until she finds something she can work with. she only needs to leave the room before they’ve realized what she’s borrowed.
𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘
aisling is a naturally empathetic person, always wishing she could do more to help those around her. unfortunately, she knows that she can’t always honor that instinct. her abilities and self-imposed limitations have left her with a hardened exterior that isn’t easy to break through. those who pass through her walls see a softer side: a steadfast friend, always there to put a peaceful end to their sleepless nights or calm their worst nightmares, with a gentle run of her fingers through their hair. but sometimes, she’ll wall herself away from even those she’s closest to after she finds herself in the middle of a particularly harrowing memory. because of this, maintaining close bonds for long is a difficult thing. given her propensity for accidentally rifling through the fondest and most fearsome parts of peoples’ pasts, she’s been known cut them out of her life when she sees something that she has the urge to alter.
𝐀𝐁𝐈𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐒
MEMORY RETRIEVAL — for as long as she could remember, aisling knew things that she shouldn’t. at first, her parents just dismissed her gift as imagination and observation combining in a perfect, creepy storm. it wasn’t until she started attending school, picked up her finger paints, and started to draw out moments from the pasts of strangers that people started to truly take notice. sloppy scenes from the librarian’s wedding day graduated into well sketched portraits of her bus driver’s dalmatians. she liked to take those happy moments, immortalize them in art, and hand them off to the owners of the memories. she liked to make people smile. sometimes, she took that a step further. too young to see the value in sadness, aisling would tweak the memories that were harder to bear; even if she couldn’t bring someone happiness in the present, she hoped she could bring them comfort in the future. it wasn’t until she was claimed that aisling saw the flaws in her intervention. it wasn’t until she was taught the consequences that she knew she had to stop. although the memories came to her unbidden, they didn’t belong to her and she had no right to change them. instead of focusing on the alteration of memories, aisling opted to try to learn how to shut them out. like her other powers, though, there’s a direct correlation between her emotional state and her ability to keep a wall up. when she’s feeling something strongly or hasn’t gotten enough sleep, she sees things that she doesn’t mean to.
HYPNOKINESIS — you are getting very sleepy… what proved to be a fun tool at sleepovers had more practical applications than aisling knew possible. the skill of inducing sleep was easy enough to come by and influencing dreams was as simple as altering memories. and while ( without intending to ) she’d been known to cause visions when tensions ran high, refining those visions into ones that took the shapes she wanted them to took practice. even more difficult than that was learning to astral project, but that became a necessity, coming hand-in-hand with building her mental walls. when the uninvited memories start to weigh on her, she’s learned that it’s best to remove herself from the immediate vicinity. even if she’s only technically leaving in her head.
OTHER ABILITIES — ( levitation ) a skill she only possesses in sleep, predominantly when her dreams are eliciting strong emotions. ( seeing the gods in dreams ) this is how she formed and maintained a relationship with her father, despite her parents being unaware of their daughter’s godly lineage. on occasion, she’ll encounter gods that she’s less familiar with and, in most of those cases, she’s been known to force herself awake.
𝐖𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒
there are so many cool, fun things runnin through my brain right now!! i think it would be lovely for her to have forged a friendship with an insomniac or maybe someone prone to nightmares that she could help! and those fun customer service relationships with record store regulars!! or maybe a former friend or significant other, who aisling left behind? maybe even altering their memory slightly, if the parting of ways was ugly! who knows! the possibilities are endless!! and i’m always up to hearing other peoples’ ideas because the Sweet Lord knows i am not the most imaginative person in any given room!!!
thank u for reading ilu!!!
