Heat transfer Disperse

Task: Testing out a range of techniques that you can use in heat transfer printing using disperse dye and synthetic fabric.

Marie-Therese Wisniowski -

Marie practices today by responding to nature by heat transfer layering techniques using multiple colours. She runs a print studio and lecturers in Australia. She is inspired by the natural environment and specialises in combining techniques to get these multi layered prints. She is the Director of Art Quill Studio & Blog. Her first post on the Art Quill Studio blogspot was published in 2010 and it focused on the first ArtCloth exhibition in Australia featuring international and national textile artists and was titled – ArtCloth: Engaging New Visions and it featured many other important textile artists from around the world.

Wisniowski's work amazing, her use of layers on the prints that I looked at seem so intentional and as if each ink colour was bespokely curated by her. In her blog she speaks about her inspiration behind a lot of her work is the wildfires that take place every year in Australia and how damaging they are to the environment and how they often cause irreversible damage to the environment, she also talk about how they add to the extinction to lots of animals. I feel this is really embodied in her work use to its resemblance to a wildfire and the dark reds that contrast to the quite harsh yellows with a mix of quite dull greens that are almost invisible.

FAS3000: Result of print making with disperse dye (part 2)

When transferring my images on to the fabric, I instantly felt my narrative slowly being illustrated within the shapes and colours of my work. The pattern and range of texture were mainly inspired by my primary sources and Wisniowski, however, when progressing more into the workshop I would like to incorporate more secondary researches with different techniques and skills in to my future samples. I feel like the first couple of images turned out really vibrant on to the synthetic fabric as they clearly shown my bright pattern and design which contrast with the dull colours of the building, and thus illustrates my narrative of the coexistence of building and plants. My shapes and pattern turned out really well as they reflect the texture and pattern found in the building and plants within my primary images, along with the floral lace print representing the fragility and looseness of plants.

I added repeated triangles and rectangles as I see these a lot on the building Within my primary photo. The vibrant green on the fabric really demonstrates the life of plants, which juxtaposes with the dark, bold colors of red, brown, and blue. I also decided to reuse my patterns from before and make a design, which replicates the outline of the building. After that, I used cotton fabric to transfer my design onto. As you can see, the design on the cotton seems a lot toned out and less vibrant compared to the synthetic fabric. Comparing them with each other, I prefer synthetic fabric as it shows a lot more, especially the vibrancy of living and growing plants contrasting the bold, dull colours of the building. These pieces, though I like how they turned out, are my first experimental pieces (samples) to get myself into the idea of how I could incorporate both primary and personal narrative, and what worked well. A weakness these samples have would be that they may be too abstract as they wouldn’t be able easily to visually communicate my narrative, since there isn’t a distinct feature that shows the difference in the building and plants. Another weakness would be that it lacks illustrational drawings showing the contrast, yet close relationship of the building and plants, and thus it would easily convey their differences and coexistence through their behavior and nature where they still intertwine with each other- plants: loose, free and simple yet has an inner intricate pattern on the leaves. Buildings: rigid, straight and tight structure, rough and has a lot of texture and different shapes. Moving forward, I would like to delve into more on heat printing with synthetic fabric along with a range of techniques to show my inspiration and visually communicate my narrative, whilst, creating new pattern and designs.

Artist Research

Marie Therese Wisniowski

For my disperse dye print workshop, I have chosen Marie Therese Wisnioski as my inspirational artist. She works full time as a studio artist, author, researcher, tutor, curator and speaker. She also teaches as a casual teacher at the University of Newcastle (Australia). In addition to that, she’s a director of Art Quill studio where she does employs and even teach some of her signature techniques in the area she specializes being the area of Art Cloth. She has created a new signature technique named Multisperse Dye Sublimation where she employs disperse dyes and involves hand printing multiple resists and multiple overprinted layers, employing numerous colour plates materials. Her completed work pieces are rich in colour, shade, light, movement, contrast, depth, and moreover, yield a three dimensional quality to the finished printed artworks. One of her work pieces, ‘Blossom Falling- Lotus Rising’ conveys the Australian plants having a unique and sustainable life- death cycle in which remnants of past generations become the fertilizer to nurture shoots of the next generations of life. This fine Artcloth print, ‘Blossom Falling- Lotus Rising’ reflects upon the connectivity between ‘rise’ and ‘fall’ of so many processes in nature and its cycle. I chose Marie Therese Wisniowski because her technique which included disperse dye accurately conveys her idea of the cycle of life between the ‘rise’ and ‘fall’ of plants (shown in ‘Blossoms Falling- Lotus Rising’ print). This also interested me along with her technique as it also can reflect the cycle of plants in my narrative and primary images with how plants grow (rise) and then wither (fall) during passing seasons yet the relationship and their coexistence (plants and buildings) remain unchanged and their stem remains unmoved for the new leaves sprout and grow around the building. The disperse dye print samples were inspired by the technique of how she uses disperse dyes and multiple printed layers with numerous colors that are included in her work, and so inspired me to add multiple layers where I collage contemporary shapes that are reflected within the shape of the building and plants in my primary images. I made the shapes in my pattern bright coloured to illustrate my narrative of the coexistence of plants and buildings. Her techniques which I used relates to my narrative as the coloured disperse dyes and multiple over printed layers in her work shows that plants remain unchanged through the life, and so reflects the narrative of the unchanged coexistence of plants and buildings where their relationship remains the same, which is shown in my samples. I wanted to show my artist inspiration through these samples by incorporating multiple disperse dye layers that are collaged together, as well as, convey my narrative and illustrate my primary images. My primary images also inspired my simple contemporary shapes as to reflect their relationship being coexisting and unchanged, yet the pattern and texture inside the shapes reflects Wisniowski’s work- involving over printed layers, different colours, movement (for texture), and contrast (dark such as brown and blue representing as the building and light colors like green as the plants).
