On Wednesday November 22nd previous recipients of the Cultuurfonds Mode Stipendium TESSA DE BOER and JORIS SUK of MAISON THE FAUX engaged in conversation about The Art of Fashion. Together with art director Fleur van Maarschalkerwaart and Eva Olde Monnikhof, board member of the Dutch Fashion Foundation, they spoke about finding new tactile and digital ways of expression at PAN Podium during art fair PAN AMSTERDAM.

L’œuvre :

On ne peut pas vraiment donner de nom exacte à cette création de haute couture. Ce n’est pas un vêtement ni un accessoire qui pourrait être porté quotidiennement. En effet, la pièce n’a pas l’air confortable, elle semble rendre les mouvements impossibles et être très encombrante, voire lourde. On comprend alors que l’objectif premier de la styliste est d’innover, de montrer l’avancée de ses recherches. On peut donc penser qu’Iris van Herpen a voulu mettre en valeur son processus de création et le rendu final, qui possède une certaine symbolique.

Tout d’abord, en ce qui concerne la forme, je trouve qu’elle s’apparente à celle de coquillages. Avec le nom de la collection « crystallization », on comprend que la styliste s’est inspirée du processus de transformation de l’eau en cristal. Sa création prend donc directement l´aparence de ce mouvement avec des formes organiques qui imitent la fluidité du liquide. À l’origine, celui ci est en perpétuel mouvement mais Iris Van Herpen le rend fixe.

Pour cela, elle utilise la modélisation informatique et le prototypage rapide, pour ensuite réaliser la pièce à l’imprimante 3D. Ainsi, une répétition de courbes et de motifs apparaît, ce qui lui donne une forme symétrique, précise et très organisée. L’idée est alors contradictoire avec l’inspiration de la nature qui est, au contraire, aléatoire. On pourrait aussi trouver paradoxale le fait de réaliser un processus naturel, c’est à dire la cristallisation de l’eau, qui a toujours existé en employant des techniques très récentes, qui ne tiennent pas vraiment compte de leur impacte sur l’environnement. Elle fige un élément naturel qui a l’origine se trouve être un mouvement. La stylise créé alors un lien entre un événement naturel et les innovations techniques.

Avec ce projet de haute couture, certes, impossible à porter, Iris Van Herpen innove dans tous les sens du terme. D’abord parce que sa pièce est une sorte de bloc que l’on pose tout simplement sur les épaules du porteur. Aussi par son style inspiré de la nature. Mais surtout pour sa technique de conception innovante : l’impression 3D, qui n’a rien à voir avec les anciennes techniques des couturières, on comprend alors parfaitement le but de cette pièce qui ce trouve être là mise en valeur de l’innovation et des recherches faites par les designers. En effet, d’après ce que j’ai pu voir, il me semble que ce n’est pas courant de trouver des pièces solides, rigides et en un seul bloc comme celle ci, mais on pourrait imaginer que de plus en plus de vêtements soient réalisés de cette manière.

La collection :

Iris Van Herpen a exposé sa collection pendant la semaine de la mode d’Amsterdam en 2010. La styliste décide de la nommer « crystalization » car elle s’inspire du passage entre l’eau à l’état liquide et à l’état solide. Elle présente ainsi 10 pièces toutes plus surprenantes et inattendues les unes que les autres avec des techniques de créations qui n’ont rien à voir entre elles, mais elle parvient à les regrouper visuellement grâce à son inspiration commune.

Qui est Iris Van Herpen ?

Iris Van Herpen est une créatrice de mode néerlandaise connue pour son coté intuitif des possibilités de la mode. Elle est née en 1984 et a fait des études de mode à l'Institut des Arts Artez à Arnhem, aux Pays Bas. Elle commence sa carrière aux cotés du célèbre styliste Alexander Mc Queen, à Londres. En 2005, elle créé sa propre marque et prépare une collection qu’elle présentera à la fashion week des Pays Bas. C’est grâce à sa volonté d’innover, de casser les codes et de surprendre par de nouvelles matières ou techniques qu’elle se fait connaître.

Pour le bac :

A mon avis, ce projet pourrait tout à fait servir de référence pour nos épreuves du bac. En effet plusieurs notions pourraient lui correspondre. Par exemple, par rapport à l’inspiration du processus de solidification et à l’impression 3D, on pourrait le rattacher à des notions qui exprimeraient un lien entre l’industrie et la nature ou alors un lien entre l’innovation ou quelque chose de futuriste et les événements naturels qui existaient avant l’Homme. On pourrait aussi s’en servir pour montrer un objet dans le quel la fonction d’estime, le visuel passe largement au dessus de la fonction d’usage, en effet, l’objet de répond pas à un problème ni à besoin (c'est encore une fois de la haute-couture donc le problème est autour de l'innovation…) car l’objectif premier de cette pièce est d’attirer l’œil et de montrer les recherches de la styliste afin de les partager et qu’elles puissent devenir presque universelles. Pour finir, il pourrait être lié à une notion qui traite des innovations techniques qui offre des résultats inhabituels dans un domaine du design en particulier. Ici, elles révolutionnent le domaine de la mode en concevant un vêtement solide, impossible à moduler et en une seule pièce.

J'ai choisi cette référence car tout comme la création d'Iris Van Herpen, il semble impossible de marcher avec ces talons. En effet, le talon est très haut, la forme parait inadaptée. Ainsi, comme Iris Van Herpen, le visuel prime. Le créateur a pour intention d’attirer l'œil, de se démarquer par son style et d’innover par la forme surprenante de la chaussure et l’emploi de volume pour les ornements. Il utilise d'ailleurs aussi des inspirations naturelles : on pourrait penser à des fourrures, des peaux animales et des écailles de poisson. Cependant, contrairement à la création d'Iris, on comprend aussi très vite que la fonction de cette paire de chaussures est de marcher, c'est évident, mais elle reste moins importante que la fonction esthétique qui saute au yeux.

BACK IN TIME: LADY GAGA PROMOTES “WE STOP HATE” IN MAARTEN VAN DER HORST & ATSUKO KUDO

Lady Gaga showed her support to teen esteem building nonprofit program WeStopHate.org - a call to action that serves “as a practice and approach to live by each day: to stop hate – stop hating on yourself, stop hating on others, stop letting others hate on you”.

For this very special recording Gaga wore the mint green suit from Fashion East – Maarten van der Horst Spring/Summer 2012 collection.

Fashion East is a pioneering non-profit initiative established by the Old Truman Brewery in 2000 to nurture emerging young designers through the difficult early stages of their career. It receives sponsorship funding from Topshop, Topman and The London Development Agency.

Each season Fashion East offer three womenswear and three menswear designers, selected by Lulu Kennedy and a panel of fashion industry experts, the opportunity to present a catwalk collection to the international press and buyers attending LFW. Designers receive a bursary, free venue and complete catwalk show production, professional catwalk photographs and video. Plus they are also given mentoring, guidance and in-house PR throughout the season from Lulu Kennedy and her team. Successes include Richard Nicoll, Holly Fulton, Jonathan Saunders, House of Holland, Gareth Pugh, Marios Schwab, Louise Goldin, Roksanda and Meadham Kirchhoff. 

After graduating with a BA from the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts in Arnhem, Holland (and completing an internship with Chloé in Paris during his studies), Maarten moved to London for his MA at Central Saint Martins. In the S/S 2012 collection Maarten showcased his trademark self developed vintage inspired Hawaiian prints. Explosive colors but also black & white versions. Some of them with strategically placed nylon frills, others with these tiny ruffles covering the whole back of the garment. In fact Maarten’s woman is “anyone really fun and gutsy enough to wear frills on the back of a Hawaiian shirt”. As a dessert Maarten offered delicious peach, black grape (or black raspberry if you prefer) and mint sherbet looks. 

The one Gaga wore was the finale number. With the back all covered with matching nylon frills!

To crown the look, Gaga chose the plain latex Crystal veiled pillbox hat with oversized bow in jade-green and fishnet veil from Atsuko Kudo’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection.

Schepers Bosman

Last Thursday, 21st of June, Dutch fashion label Schepers Bosman presented their new collection from Paris, France. The Spring / Summer 2019 menswear collection is about ‘being a tourist in your own city’. With their fashion design Schepers Bosman try to paint an image of a big city, with it’s unknown, undiscovered peripheral areas.

Modern Escapism

Schepers Bosman gathered exotic elements from their surroundings in Amsterdam, which is situated in the New-West part of the city. Fifties mosaics and murals found in that neighborhood have been translated into abstract prints and cast as a layer over Schepers Bosman’s modern, elaborated holiday wardrobe, Dutch fashion at it’s best.

Dutch Fashion

All patterns and garments are designed, developed and manufactured in their own studio. Same goes for the prints, which are applied and embroidered both manually and mechanically. Except for nylon, the materials used for this collection are natural: satin cotton, silk, light weight denim and jersey.

About Schepers Bosman

Schepers Bosman is an Amsterdam based designer duo made up of Sanne Schepers (1989) and Anne Bosman (1988) which was formed in January 2017, after the closure of their former label Futura.

Schepers and Bosman graduated in 2011 with honours at ArtEZ Institute of the Arts Arnhem, BA Fashion Design. Schepers continued her studies at l’Institut Français de la Mode (IFM) in Paris. Bosman also studied further and graduated from Central Saint Martins London, MA Menswear.

In past years Schepers won the Lichting G-Star Raw Talent Award 2011, while Bosman won two H&M Design Awards. In 2017 the duo won the international design competition Les Etoiles Mercedes-Benz.

The so-called "Nissenhutten" at Onderlangs after WW II and before the Rietveld building was build in 1963. Nissenhutten were temporary emergency shelter consisting of a curved roof of corrugated iron.

Extremely proud of our 64th generation of graduates of ArtEZ Fashion Design BA. Their graduation collections are captured in the film 'Class of 2022' which is currently on show in Focus Film Theatre in Arnhem during the ArtEZ Finals, and which will be available online as off upcoming Sunday July 3rd.

92 countries have submitted works to @biaafbilbao and 1300 portfolios were reviewed carefully. 

Jef Montes/Project Marinero was picked 1st prize category fashion by an international jury @lvmh @vogueitalia @cristobalbalenciagamuseoa and many more. 

June 2022 marks the 10-year anniversary after graduating from Bachelor @artezfashiondesignarnhem. It feels like a full circle, especially because my mission has mainly been to understand what was going around me and what is needed throughout an even bigger contribution on a global scale. My goal was to know more about materials and how these new processes can contribute to a necessary change for the world that we all live in. Through all these R&D projects I got to learn a lot about: tailoring, weaving, knitting, yarn and filament processing. Throughout these processes I was able to discover my signature and how I could also possibly produce a commercial product out of it. Looking back, I have to thank all those people that have supported me each single year, and still keep supporting me to this day. This prize is shared with you and I am very thankful for each single person that I was able to connect with. Connecting with new platforms, meeting new people and experience local traditions always seem to hit me on deep levels. It gives me hope for more in the future.
