"For the first time in almost 60 years, a state has formally overturned a so-called “right to work” law, clearing the way for workers to organize new union locals, collectively bargain, and make their voices heard at election time.

This week, Michigan finalized the process of eliminating a decade-old “right to work” law, which began with the shift in control of the state legislature from anti-union Republicans to pro-union Democrats following the 2022 election. “This moment has been decades in the making,” declared Michigan AFL-CIO President Ron Bieber. “By standing up and taking their power back, at the ballot box and in the workplace, workers have made it clear Michigan is and always will be the beating heart of the modern American labor movement.”

[Note: The article doesn't actually explain it, so anyway, "right to work" laws are powerful and deceptively named pieces of anti-union legislation. What right to work laws do is ban "union shops," or companies where every worker that benefits from a union is required to pay dues to the union. Right-to-work laws really undermine the leverage and especially the funding of unions, by letting non-union members receive most of the benefits of a union without helping sustain them. In addition to formally scrapping the anti-labor law on Tuesday [February 13, 2024], Michigan also restored prevailing-wage protections for construction workers, expanded collective bargaining rights for public school employees, and restored organizing rights for graduate student research assistants at the state’s public colleges and universities. But even amid all of these wins for labor, it was the overturning of the “right to work” law that caught the attention of unions nationwide...

Now, the tide has begun to turn—beginning in a state with a rich labor history. And that’s got the attention of union activists and working-class people nationwide...

At a time when the labor movement is showing renewed vigor—and notching a string of high-profile victories, including last year’s successful strike by the United Auto Workers union against the Big Three carmakers, the historic UPS contract victory by the Teamsters, the SAG-AFTRA strike win in a struggle over abuses of AI technology in particular and the future of work in general, and the explosion of grassroots union organizing at workplaces across the country—the overturning of Michigan’s “right to work” law and the implementation of a sweeping pro-union agenda provides tangible evidence of how much has changed in recent years for workers and their unions...

By the mid-2010s, 27 states had “right to work” laws on the books.

But then, as a new generation of workers embraced “Fight for 15” organizing to raise wages, and campaigns to sign up workers at Starbucks and Amazon began to take off, the corporate-sponsored crusade to enact “right to work” measures stalled. New Hampshire’s legislature blocked a proposed “right to work” law in 2017 (and again in 2021), despite the fact that the measure was promoted by Republican Governor Chris Sununu. And in 2018, Missouri voters rejected a “right to work” referendum by a 67-33 margin.

Preventing anti-union legislation from being enacted and implemented is one thing, however. Actually overturning an existing law is something else altogether.

But that’s what happened in Michigan after 2022 voting saw the reelection of Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a labor ally, and—thanks to the overturning of gerrymandered legislative district maps that had favored the GOP—the election of Democratic majorities in the state House and state Senate. For the first time in four decades, the Democrats controlled all the major levers of power in Michigan, and they used them to implement a sweeping pro-labor agenda. That was a significant shift for Michigan, to be sure. But it was also an indication of what could be done in other states across the Great Lakes region, and nationwide.

“Michigan Democrats took full control of the state government for the first time in 40 years. They used that power to repeal the state’s ‘right to work’ law,” explained a delighted former US secretary of labor Robert Reich, who added, “This is why we have to show up for our state and local elections.”"

when i was a teenager on tumblr in 2012-2013 i briefly had a moment when i was obsessed with dennys’s trashy and liminal nature and i collected weird and horrific dennys stories. dennys was inherently funny to me. and so when dennys made their own cursed shitposting blog i was pissed that dennys stole the posting about dennys game from me, and i deleted all my posts about the restaurant chain. i remember the last night of true dennys based joy was not long after the dennys blog went up but i hadnt quit the dennysposting game yet. my bedroom had flooded and so i was sitting in the kitchen and reading asks about food poisoning and roaches and such to occupy my time til my room went back to normal. but it never went back to normal. my room became the home of black mold and fungus, where i coexisted with the toxic spores and unceremoniously scraped ear-shaped mushrooms off my wall for about 5 years until i moved out in mid 2018. after the dennys jig was up, i pivoted hard into my vaporwave phase and also spent a bit less time on tumblr in general due to spending more time on fandom-specific sites. i also was spending more of my time at home laying in bed lowkey hallucinating and highkey believing i was a dead person. this was quite confusing because at that point science had come to the conclusion that black mold couldnt produce enough toxic spores at once to cause a person to experience serious psychological symptoms. so of course this meant to me, a toxin-addled teenager, that the hallucinations and such i was experiencing were not explained by science and thus potentially real. this disturbed me when i had the time to worry about it, which only became a major issue for my quality of life after i graduated high school and all i did was work at a coffee shop and play minecraft in my mold room. it wasn’t until after i moved out in 2018 that i found out that scientists reversed their opinion on mold toxins again in like 2017 or something. now its widely acknowledged that that shit makes people have all manner of mental symptoms. at the time though i was fairly willing to accept that the powers that be forgot to take me out of my body after i died. i felt a bit bad for spreading so much shit talk about denny’s back in the day since the better dennys in my town was incredibly accommodating to the massive amount of allergies in my family, but the other dennys functionally across the street from it served such horrible food that the impression could not be overcome.

Escapist Yuri Manga 'Kimi to Shiranai Natsu ni Naru' Licensed in English

On Wednesday, Seven Seas Entertainment announced that it has licensed Keyyang's Yuri romance manga Kimi to Shiranai Natsu ni Naru (Throw Away The Suit Together). The first volume will be released in English in July 2024 under Seven Seas GL label.

The publisher describes the manga:

Haru and Hii-chan are two young women in college buckling under the weight of adult responsibilities. Getting into university, then job hunting, then preparing for careers after graduation–it’s what they’re expected to do, because that’s what “everyone” does, but what do they really want for themselves? Finally, Haru and Hii-chan decide to take life into their own hands, toss their resumes into the sea, and move to an island together! They soon find that island living isn’t all blue skies and breezing through sunny days…but whatever the future holds, they can face it together.

Kimi to Shiranai Natsu ni Naru began serialization in Comic Yuri Hime in August 2021. Ichijinsha publishes two collected volumes of the series in Japanese.

The series has received mostly positive reviews. In their review of the first Japanese volume on Okazu, Erica Friedman praised the characters' "deep love for on another" and called the manga "charming" but criticized some aspects of its artwork.

Keyyang is a manga artist known for their series Otonari no Tengai and Salad Bowl, the latter of which was serialized in Comic Yuri Hime from 2018 to 2019. They have also contributed to the Isekai Tensei and Macaron Idol Yuri anthologies.

The first English volume of Kimi to Shiranai Natsu ni Naru debuts digitally and in paperback in July 2024.

Rada Krivokapic Radonjic is a famous fashion designer and stylist whose signature style of classic, elegant yet luxurious ready-to-wear helped introduce ease and streamlined modernity to 21th-century dressing.

Early life

Rada Krivokapic Radonjic is originally from Kotor, Montenegro. Her parents are father Djuro Krivokapic and mother Vidosava Kaludjerovic. She also has an older brother named Radoslav Rajo Krivokapic. Her brother is a sailor, her mother a health care worker/nurse at Kotor General Hospital, and her father a factory worker.

Education

Talking about her educational background, she passed her Master's level in 2018. The program was funded by the German Government and was also designed according to the German education system. She had enrolled in Law, Professional, and Occupational Pedagogy, Trade, and Economy. She joined the School of Fashion and Specialization for Fashion Designer and Stylist. She graduated from this school of fashion from Belgrade in 1996, which was under the Paris system in collaboration with the Academy of Fine Arts. For her fashion school, she did an internship under Giorgio Armani Milan in 1997. Working for one of the world's most famous fashion creators, she got the opportunity to meet the best fashion creators to advance her knowledge base. Likewise, she completed her Ph.D. in Fashion Design in Belgrade in 1998.

Rada Krivokapic Radonjic, a visionary in the world of fashion, hails from the picturesque town of Kotor, Montenegro. Additionally, Rada has also written the books 'Odijevanje' that translates to "Dressing" and 'Krojenje i sivenje' that translates to "Tailoring and sewing". Her books are related to the issues in the fashion and clothing world, which is influential for aspiring models, designers, and stylists. She is mostly based in her hometown Kotor. However, she also has her professional links in Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro. She designed common folk costume called Zentivns 2022.

It’s Fine Press Friday!  

Today we’re taking a closer look at some of Indianapolis-based artist Carl Pope’s (b. 1961 ) work—a portfolio of broadsides produced for the installation series The Bad Air Smelled of Roses. The edition in our collection consists of 71 letterpress prints of varying dimensions (all around 56 x 36 cm) produced with wood type at York Show Prints in York, Alabama (formerly run by Amos Paul Kennedy, whose works are also represented in our collection) and Tribune Showprint in Earl Park, Indiana (“the oldest continuously operating letterpress shop in the country”) on poster and chip board between 2004-2005, nearly all of which are signed by the artist.  

Pope characterizes the work, which has grown since its original iteration to include 108 posters, as “an ongoing essay about the presence and function of Blackness in society” and an exploration of the "various psychological and emotional states like forgetfulness, insanity, alienation" associated with "the poetics of Blackness." He chose to present a selection of texts drawn from a variety of sources including “modern Black literature, René Descartes, jazz and rap music, Sigmund Freud, Malcolm X, Dolly Parton, movie dialogue from Casablanca and The Matrix...” in letterpress print form because of the medium’s historical associations with marketing and political activism.   

When installed in the rarified context of an art gallery or museum, as this series has now been exhibited on numerous occasions, the commercial qualities of Pope’s posters incite a productive slippage in our assumptions around high and low culture. As he puts it in a 2018 interview with Hyperallergic, “I don’t see culture as the production of beautiful paintings and works of art, you know, although culture includes that. For me the production of progressive culture is the collaborative practice with myself and other people in the world of ideals, to create and to advance human evolution... I’m not interested in using art as a tool for cultural imperialism.”

New proof for black hole spin

The supermassive black hole at the heart of galaxy M87, made famous by the first picture of a black hole shadow, has yielded another first: the jet shooting out from the black hole has been confirmed to wobble, providing direct proof that the black hole is spinning. Super massive black holes, monsters up to billions of times heavier than the Sun that eat everything around them including light, are difficult to study because no information can escape from within. Theoretically, there are very few properties that we can even hope to measure. One property that might possibly be observed is spin, but due to the difficulties involved there have been no direct observations of black hole spin. Searching for evidence for black hole spin, an international team analyzed over two decades of observational data for the galaxy M87.  This galaxy located 55 million light-years away in the direction of the constellation Virgo harbors a black hole 6.5 billion times more massive than the Sun, the same black hole which yielded the first image of a black hole shadow by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) in 2019. The supermassive black hole in M87 is known to have an accretion disk, which feeds matter into the black hole, and a jet, in which matter is ejected from near the black hole at close to the speed of light. The team analyzed data for 170 time frames collected by the East Asian VLBI Network (EAVN), the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), the joint array of KVN and VERA (KaVA), and the East Asia to Italy Nearly Global (EATING) VLBI network. In total, more than 20 radio telescopes across the globe contributed to this study. The results show that gravitational interactions between the accretion disk and the black hole’s spin cause the base of the jet to wobble, or precess, much the same way that gravitational interactions within the Solar System cause the Earth to precess. The team successfully linked the dynamics of the jet with the central supermassive black hole, providing direct evidence that the black hole does in fact spin. The jet’s direction changes by about 10 degrees with a precession period of 11 years, matching theoretical supercomputer simulations conducted by ATERUI II at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ). "We are thrilled by this significant finding," says Yuzhu Cui, lead author on the paper summarizing the research she started as a graduate student at NAOJ before moving to Zhejiang Lab as a postdoctoral researcher. "Since the misalignment between the black hole and the disk is relatively small and the precession period is around 11 years, accumulating high-resolution data tracing M87 structure over two decades and thorough analysis are essential to obtain this achievement.” "After the success of black hole imaging in this galaxy with the EHT, whether this black hole is spinning or not has been a central concern among scientists," explains Dr. Kazuhiro Hada from NAOJ. "Now anticipation has turned into certainty. This monster black hole is indeed spinning." “This is an exciting scientific milestone that was finally revealed through years of joint observations by the international researchers team from 45 institutions around the world, working together as one,�� says Dr. Motoki Kino at Kogakuin University, the coordinator of the East Asian VLBI Network Active Galactic Nuclei Science Working Group. “Our observational data beautifully fitted to the simple sinusoidal curve bring us new advances in our understanding of black hole and jet system.”

Let’s begin with the interpretive framework and aim of her dissertation:

“Exploring narrative strategies, critical receptions, textual and extra-textual relationalities produced by the three bodies of works, this dissertation delineates a paradigm for reading cross-gender homoerotic texts that is neither gay nor queer, neither paranoid nor reparative, and instead focuses on fantasy and how it produces pleasure. Fantasy is used in two senses here: as a preoccupation with relationships in romantic fantasies and as a desire to depart from the here and now. I was The Ice Queen in my high school graduating class of 54 people, so it became Big News when my senior year spring play featured me having to actually kiss one of the other seniors because the height difference between us was so dramatic that all attempts at a stage kiss were cartoonishly awful. Pretty much the entire senior class showed up for My First Kiss and applauded for me, which was nice but wholly unnecessary because the other senior was my boyfriend of two months and that was nowhere near my first kiss.

My hobby for most of my childhood was legos to the point where my lego collection took over what was designated on the house blueprints as a home office. I think the last count was that we owned 2.6 million individual legos.

I once met President Trump, who spent ten minutes refusing to even meet me because the paperwork he'd been given had the wrong (male) version of my name and he refused to believe that I was a cis woman. When he did finally deign to meet me, he spent the entire time sulking because he'd been preparing himself to congratulate a man on his achievement, not a tiny 4'11" woman on hers. Then, to cap the whole thing off, he reminded me to vote for him in the 2020 election (it was 2018) and got very mad when I laughed at him. This sounds like an "and then everyone clapped" story but I swear I couldn't make this up if I tried.

In Tune With Crissmas

“Criss” Kringle’s coming to town a little early this year. And he’s got creative plans to spread some musical Yuletide cheer throughout the Motor City.

You might even say that it’s his civic duty.

“I’m in the service industry. As an entertainer, I’m here to play some music and take you through a bit of a holiday music Ted Talk,” says actor/singer/songwriter Darren Criss about his “A Very Darren Crissmas” tour coming to the Fisher Theatre on Sunday, Dec. 10. “Hopefully, people will leave with a little holiday pep in their step.”

Topping Criss’ concert playlist are songs from his A Very Darren Crissmas album which dropped in 2021. But because of the pandemic, Criss never got a chance to have a full-blown Christmas concert tour — until now.

“The album and tour showcase creative imaginings of classic tunes and rarely covered hidden gems along with two original Christmas songs,” says Criss, a 2009 Theatre Performance graduate of the University of Michigan.

Joining Criss on stage is fellow UM Wolverine and BFF Tomek Miernowski as his music director. Criss’ set list features “a wildly eclectic collection of songs from big band Christmas classics to novelty tunes and modern-day folk-pop ballads,” he says.

Long before the Crissmas album — which features duets with Adam Lambert, Lainey Wilson and Evan Rachel Wood — Criss was writing original songs for the hit TV series Glee which featured Criss in his breakout role as Blaine Anderson. In 2018, he won a Primetime Emmy, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and Critics’ Choice Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his role as Andrew Cunanan in The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. In addition, he recently starred in Netflix’s hit series Hollywood, for which he also served as executive producer. And Broadway fans will remember Criss’ star turns in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Hedwig and the Angry Inch and American Buffalo with Laurence Fishburne and Sam Rockwell in 2022.

Though Criss won’t be able to squeeze in a visit to the Big House in Ann Arbor this time around, he’s already checking out the home game schedule for 2024.

“I make it my business to come back at least once a year, especially during football season,” says Criss, who attended nearly every game when he was a student. The last time Criss was in Michigan, he also visited the Motown Museum with his band.

“It was fun,” he says. “There’s a bit of Motown that’s infused in this album that was inspired by the Detroit sound. So, when we play [the Christmas concert at the Fisher Theatre], there will be a bit of a hometown vibe.”

Though Criss’ dad moved all over the country growing up, he spent his formative years in Detroit.

“So that’s why when I applied to the University of Michigan, and ultimately got in, it was such a big thing for me to be able to take my dad to the Big House for a football game. He hadn’t been to Michigan since he was 10. And I took him, easily, more than 50 years later to see a game there. That was a lot of fun,” Criss reminisced. 

“I’ve got a lot of kinship with the state of Michigan and the city of Detroit.”

January 22nd is National Polka Dot Day and to celebrate we’re sharing artwork from the Queen of Polka Dots, Yayoi Kusama (b. 1929)! Kusama’s first recorded use of polka dots dates back to around age ten when she covered a drawn portrait of her mother in a field of frantic dots. More than a stylistic choice, Kusama has since shared the use of polka dots reflects the “infinity nets” present in the visual hallucinations she often experiences in relation to her mental illness. Incorporating them into her art became a way for Kusama to share and coexist with the fears prevalent in her life.  

Yayoi Kusama: All About My Love, published by Thames & Hudson in 2019, is an intimate overview of Kusama’s life and career documenting the artist’s retrospective exhibition of the same name that was on view at the Matsumoto City Museum of Art in 2018. One of the many exhibition catalogs held within Special Collections, Yayoi Kusama: All About My Love offers nearly 200 color reproductions of Kusama’s work accompanied by numerous photographs of the artist, archival paraphernalia, poetry, interviews and her exhibitions throughout her long career.
