It is considered one of the oldest temples in this region.

Facts about the Someswarar (Kudanthaikaronam) in  Kumbakonam

Situated at a distance of 6kms from the temple town of Kumbakonam, Someswarar Temple or Kudanthaikaronam is one of the most revered temples of Lord Shiva. The temple, also known by other names such as “Keezh Pazhayarai Vadathali” and “Pazhayarai Someswarar Temple”, is said to have been constructed during the reign of the Cholas between the 8th and 9th centuries. Lord Shiva is the presiding deity and is revered in the form of Shivalinga, also called “Someswarar”. The Banam (predominant cylindrical structure of Linga) is specially known as “Narmadhai banam” here.

The Tamil Shaiva seminal work “Tevaram”, compiled in the 7th century, has a lot of references to Lord Someswarar, and this temple has also been tagged as “Paadal Petra Sthalam”.

Once Lord Chandran (Moon god), because of Guru’s (Brahaspathi) curve, appeared in Kumbakonam and worshipped Lord Shiva. He excavated a holy water tank called “Chandrapushkarani”, which does not exist now.  

Thirumalanavar revered Somanathar who granted the boon to win over the Asuras. Thirumalanavar has also constructed a shrine for Mangala Nayagiamman and Maleeswarar (a Linga).

Chola king Paranthaka built a shrine for Choleeswara and Tripurasundari amman wanting a child. The main deity Someshwarar was worshipped by one of the Navagrahas – Guru, and thus the Lingam is called “Guru's Sikkeshwarar” or “Vyazha Someshwarar”. Nataraja and Shivagami are also seen.  You can also find Kodipanchagraha temple here. Thirugnana Sambandar has composed a hymn on the main temple deity.

In addition to Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess Parvathy, one can find other temples with various shrines - Murugan along with his consorts, Bairavar, Nalvar, Navagraham, Saneeswarar, and Suryan are found on the corridor. The idols of Natarajar, along with Sivakami and Somaskandhar, are placed in the front of the temple’s sanctorum; there is a separate chamber for Saint Thirugnanasambanthar beside Goddess Parvathy.

You can also find idols of Dakshinamurthy, Vinayakar, Arthanareeswarar, Durgai, Brahma and Chandikeswarar and many more in the sanctum. Six daily rituals are followed in the temple; the most noted festival observed at the Someswarar Temple is the “Maasi Maham Brahmahotsavam”, as the name implies, during the Tamil month of Maasi.

Ardhanareeswarar Temple View - Tiruchengode - Namakkal - Tamil Nadu - India.

Tiruchengode is 35 km from Namakkal. It is one of the seven Sivasthalams in Kongunadu. The Arthanareeswarar Temple is located on a hill. Ardhanareeswarar Temple is on the hill which is red in color. One can take on 1206 steps to reach the top of the hill to worship the Lord Shiva-Ardhanareeswarar. Arthanāreeswarā temple is an ancient Hindu temple, located in Tiruchengode, in the  Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The temple is dedicated to Arthanāreeswarā, the unique half-male half-female of Lord Shiva. It is perhaps the only temple in Asia where this rare form of the Divine is enshrined as the principal deity. The deity here is also known as Mādhorubāgan and Ammaiyappan. The famous Chenkottu Velavar Temple, dedicated to Lord Murugan, is also situated on the same hill. It is one of the shrines of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams praised in the Thevaram hymns of the Saivite saints.
