Parties until 5AM? Not without electricity...

I'm a student, living off campus in a house shared with a few other students. The road I live on is heavy on people doing the same thing - I'd guess 2 out of 3 houses are students. My neighbours on one side are students, though the other side isn't.

Over the last two weeks or so, all of these student houses have been having Christmas/end of semester parties. This makes it a little bit louder than normal in the evenings, but everyone's being perfectly reasonable and nobody's caused problems.

Until Tuesday last week. That was the day that my neighbours had their party. Their first party. It was a huge alcohol- and weed-fuelled affair that lasted until about 5 AM. I grit my teeth and bore it, figuring it would only be a one off thing. But OH NO.

Over the next 4 nights, one of my housemates, my neighbours the other side, their neighbours the other side, and someone from across the street all knocked on their door to ask them to cool it, with varying degrees of politeness roughly inversely proportional to the hour of the morning.

They took our complaints on board, apologised, and asked their guests to leave quietly. Ha! I wish.

We were all told in no uncertain terms where we could shove our complaints. So, last night, I made a plan. All the houses on our road are built very similarly - they're all pre-war 20s-30s working-class housing that have been renovated to various degrees but retain their internal layout. This is important. Now given that their parties have all been so huge, I figured the hosts probably didn't know everyone there personally, and were probably relying on arriving guests saying "hey I'm here with Kevin and Karen". So, banking on that, I knocked on the door an hour or two after the party started, laid it on thick about how Kevin and Karen are my best buddies, and got let in.

I wandered round for a bit, blending in, taking advantage of the free drinks and noting how the layout of their house is exactly the same as ours... then seized a quiet moment to waltz back to the door, with the fuse box right above, flip their main breaker off, and disappear into the night. (Okay, back home next door, but shush.)

By the time they figured out what happened and the lights came back on, their guests had all decided that a party without power was no fun and left for more exciting venues.

I sat back, enjoyed my half-inched free drink of satisfaction rum in the newfound quiet, and laughed to myself.

LUDICIOUS X starts on July 1: The Highlights

LUDICIOUS X is the digital version of LUDICIOUS – Zürich Game Festival.

From July 1-3, 2020 games professionals from all over the world come together, listen to talks and panels, participate in workshops, share their insights, connect with new people and exchange knowledge and know-how. In addition to the conference, LUDICIOUS X presents an online exhibition with more than 70 Games from 22 Countries. The exhibition is free of charge. To attend the Conference, a ticket is needed.

Among the speakers are Alayna Cole (Sledgehammer Games / Queerly Represent me), Yves Bordeleau (Rogue Factor), Callum Underwood (Kowloon Nights), Aki Raula (Independent), Jason della Rocca (Execution Labs), Tanya dePass (I Need Diverse Games), Martin Mathiesen Kvale (Krillbite Studios), Henrik Jonsson (Amplifier Game Invest), Renee Gittins (IGDA), Victoria Tran (Kitfox Games) and many more.

  “With LUDICIOUS X we want to solve the seemingly impossible task of transferring the personal and professional atmosphere of the festival into the right tools and setup for an online experience catering to conversations, learning and exchange”, Tobias Kopka, Artistic and Conference Director of LUDICIOUS X explains. He adds: “Finding suiting topics which work in a situation where everybody is working from home is a second pillar: we will center around questions of encouraging creativity, discussing socially responsible leadership, taking diversity seriously and won´t also be shying away from the challenges in community management in today’s online spheres. Not to forget practical workshops in best practices of user assessment or discussing the latest fancy elements in creating great streams for and by developers. The third pillar is of course matchmaking, to support the Swiss and international indie community in finding new partners to take the next steps together with. More than 100 companies and projects are already signed up! ”

Back to LUDICIOUS X. This year’s festival program has one main focus: “Shifting Landscapes: Assessing The Role And Reality Of Games And Game Development In 2020”. The conference aims to provide orientation and inspiration for all game professionals. During the three festival days attendees can explore topics such as “Creating Stories Out Of Reflection” or “Feel Engineering & Emotional Design”, dive into workshops around game design, learn how to engage with communities and even join an online yoga class.

Throughout the festival, the LUDICIOUS X exhibition is showcasing not only the nominees for this year’s LUDICIOUS  Awards, but also the LUDICIOUS Special Selection, the LUDICIOUS Swiss Showcase, the nominees for the SGDA Awards and many more games from up and coming studios. The exhibition is featured on the LUDICIOUS website. Free admission. The cornerstone of LUDICIOUS X is the community focus: through Meet To Match, a Mentor Cafe and a Discord server attendees can easily connect and broaden their professional network. Award Show This year’s Award Show will take place on July 1st, 7pm (CEST). LUDICIOUS will give away awards for “Innovation in Games” and “Emerging Talent”. The Swiss Game Development Association SGDA will co-host the event and crown the “Swiss Game of the Year” and the “Audience Choice Award”.
