Dreamers
The earth is my country.
My place of birth is love. My language is music that anyone can sing.
My faith is the one that says the light of heaven shines on all.
My color is the color of everything that is beautiful to me.
I belong to one people, the race of you and me.
Is this the world of dreams, or the world of possibilities?
The earth is my country, I look after it as it looks after me,
and for everything I’ve lost something else is given back in full.
I will name it Here and Now. I will leave all roads open
and hope that I will find you, or you will find me.
I will keep the light on and wait for you to enter the dream.
*”Dreamers” was written as the lyrics for a musical composition by Arturo O’Farrill entitled “Borderless.”

Artist Questionnaire: Arturo O'Farrill
Tumblr media
Is social justice important to you and why?
Social justice is the currency of existence, if the planet has the resources so no human being  has to starve, suffer and not realize the potential they have then not one of us has the right to ignore their plight and in fact we are called upon to labor against those who would perpetrate this crime.
Have you been inspired by recent events in the world and here at home to make your music more political or socially-charged?
We are in a tailspin globally, with the rise of the neo-fascist regime in this and other countries we are called upon to make our art and our lives an offering to combat this moment. Trump is a danger to the planet and everything we do must be geared towards destroying his presidency. What does the word jazz mean to you and how is it different today in our modern era? Is it relevant today and how so? The word jazz was created by society to describe a music that cannot be described with words, a music that is pan African, pan American and truly now, international. unfortunately, may have co-opted it for their America centric, conservative and replication aims, to control how the currency moves towards their institutions.  Too often we worship the heroes and not the spirit of their vision, the spirit of jazz cannot be contained in any building, festival or concert, it must be allowed to take over those settings and yea even challenge the complacence of the very structures it embodies, it cannot be stilled.
Are you inspired or have you taken part in Black Lives Matter protests or other social or political movements and what steps are you taking in your life and your music to address these issues?
I have affiliations with Stop Mass incarceration, Black Lives Matter, The Revolutionary Books, Say No to Fascism, and One Peoples (my own activism setting).  In addition, I am the founder of the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance, an organization dedicated to creating alternatives to the jazz machine.  I address, compose, march, speak, write and in every way address matters of social and political revolution in my work and in my life.
What does Thelonious Monk's music mean to you? What does it spark in you when you hear it played or play it yourself?
It's funny a common joke amongst musicians is that Monk wouldn't have gotten into the Monk competition. Monk embodies the spirit of invention, grace, Africa, Latin America and the relentless struggle to fly in the face of conformity.  I sometimes think the state of institutional jazz would've frightened him.  Nonetheless, he is the sound of freedom, blessed be his name.
