Montreal’s Best of - Summer 2019: Omara Portuondo

Cuban diva legend Omara Portuondo at his 88 years of living is turning in 2019 to said good bye to the public around the world: The last kiss tour. Belong to her manager, the outstanding pianist Roberto Fonseca, Omara make cry and dance the Théâtre Maisonneuve with world wide recognized hits, such as Dos gardenias, Guantanamera and Besame Mucho !

Omara has more than 70 years on stage and performed and collaborated with Buena Vista Social Club, Anacaona, Cuarteto d’Aida quartet, Nat King Cole, Edith Piaf and many others. A whole generations of Cubans and Latin jazz lovers grew up with her.

With her sole presence the ambient was enchanted and at any break between songs she was ovationed by the public as living diva. Also, she got the Antonio Carlos Jobim Award from the Montreal jazz festival organization, recognizing her long and brilliant career. More ovations. Even more: the maximum climax was found with the surprise appearance on stage of non other than Chuco Valdés and together performed Besame mucho.

I had the pleasure of seeing this great band live in NYC in 1999 at The Beacon and it was beautiful! My great + awesome friend Carlos turned me on to this music years ago with his wonderful family of expat Cubans . This album went on to sell 12 Million copies globally - yeah this album of beautiful Cuban Standards - what a joy- oh when Joe Biden resumes normal relationship with Cuba make sure you book a trip there, as I was in Cuba in 2002-2003 one of the most alluring places on our planet- every single country in the world has normal relationship with this country and it is filled with tourists from all around this planet - and what I loved most about my time in Cuba was both the people and it’s music Enjoy!! Omara Portuondo to reissue 'Buena Vista Social Club Presents' and shares archive footage of Omara performing in London in 2000

World Circuit Records will reissue Omara Portuondo's 'Buena Vista Social Club Presents' on 6th September. Remastered and available on vinyl for the first time, ‘Buena Vista Social Club Presents' is a collection of eleven beautiful songs from one of Cuba’s most celebrated singers.  Variously tagged the Edith Piaf or Billie Holiday of Cuba, Omara started her career as a dancer at the Tropicana at the age of 15 and went on to tour the world as a singer with all-girl groups Orquesta Anacaona and Cuarteto D’Aida. She later came to significant worldwide notice as the only female singer on the Buena Vista Social Club album and film, and after recording subsequent albums with other Buena Vista artists Rubén González and Ibrahim Ferrer, World Circuit went back to the EGREM studios in Havana to record with Omara. The result is an album resonant and evocative of the heyday of the big band era. World Circuit has recently unearthed archive footage of Omara performing 'El Hombre Que Ame' in London's Hyde Park in 2000, as part of a Buena Vista Social Club/Afro-Cuban All Stars show at the Route of Kings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K38XZlIovdY&feature=youtu.be The album drew international plaudits on its release in 2000 and was followed by a global tour with fellow Buena Vista stars, giving a whole new generation the opportunity to see the illustrious group live. Now 88, Omara is currently on her last ever world tour, which also saw her performing an unforgettable show at The Barbican.   OMARA PORTUONDO ON TOUR  August 24th– Helsinki, FI – Huvila Festival  August 30th – Paris, FR – Philharmonie de Paris-Amphithéâtre  ‘Buena Vista Social Club Presents … Omara Portuondo’ takes as its theme unrequited love. Her sonorous and expressive voice is set against a large sound-scape provided by the brilliant Cuban arranger Demetrio Muñiz, (director of Havana’s famous Tropicana cabaret). Muñiz introduced a rich and varied accompaniment to the recordings, including lush string sections, Compay Segundo’s clarinet group, traditional Septeto style, ‘50s style jazz big band and a string quartet, amongst other unusual combinations. The resulting sound could only have been made in Cuba. "The recording means so much to me,' reflects Omara. "My heart is filled with so many lovely memories and emotions. I am grateful to everyone who has accompanied and supported me on my beautiful musical journey." Read the full article
