“The designation of GENOCIDE as an independent crime under international law – alongside war crimes and crimes against humanity – was in reaction to the horrors of the second world war, when Nazi Germany, driven by ideas of “Aryan superiority” and a desire for “racial purity”, pursued an extermination campaign against several peoples they deemed inferior.

Roma and Sinti, Slavs and, most extensively, Jewish people, were brutally persecuted. Millions died in concentration camps – starved, worked or gassed to death – alongside political opponents such as communists, trade unionists and socialists.

This unprecedented brutality, along with the enormous human and material cost of the second world war, was the motivation behind the push to create the United Nations and a global rules-based system to render war a last resort.

That order would set firm boundaries for behaviour in war, for military occupations, in regulating state-to-state behaviour and preventing egregious crimes – even within states – such as genocide, systematic murder, forcible population transfer, enslavement, apartheid and many others.

**It was a postwar dream of a better world, where human rights principles would be universally applied and a true global community of nations, equal in rights, could emerge and flourish under the protection of a shared law that would make war obsolete. Today, it is that dream that looks obsolete.

Today, as the world watches Israel’s mass murder in Gaza, the wholesale destruction of entire areas, town and cities, the mass displacement of nearly 2 million people, the global rules-based order has never looked more impotent or imperilled.

According to ‘Save the Children’, killed more children than the number of children killed in global conflict zones every year since 2019; more UN workers than in any similar period in the UN’s 78-year history, and more journalists than in any period of conflict since 1992. The collective punishment of Palestinians is incomparable to any other conflict in recent memory.

This is merely a continuation of a 106-year history characterised by the denial of rights to the Palestinian nation that began in 1917 with the ‘Balfour Declaration’ and British colonial rule, and continued with the forced expulsion of more than two-thirds of the Palestinian people in the 1948 Nakba, and the occupation by Israel in 1967 of the rest of historical Palestine.

Israel is not engaged in a “war” on Hamas. **It is engaged in a war on the Palestinian people.**

This is amply evidenced by its indiscriminate bombing of Gaza, the genocidal language deployed by Israeli leaders from the very top, and the ethnic cleansing we hear promised and see implemented.

This must end. Now!! The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide was adopted in 1948, the same year as the Nakba.

It was adopted in the spirit of “never again”.

And yet here we are.

🇵🇸 … “Palestinian resistance is a decolonial struggle against Israeli settler colonialism and U.S. imperialism. This resistance is also confronting the brutal nature of colonial modernity, which is exemplified in Zionism.

Colonial modernity is the development of modern social, economic, and political life in and through the European colonial project from the 15th century onwards, which is marked by the genocide, enslavement and exploitation of millions of colonised people.

Zionism, as a modern political ideology, is a child of this colonial modernity and arguably its most clear manifestation in our world today.

Zionist ideology dates back to the late 1800s when it emerged in Central and Eastern Europe. This occurred during what may be described as the apex of colonial modernity.

During this time, the colonial racialization of human beings into distinct races that ranked them in a clear hierarchy was well underway and had become institutionalised.

Eventually, this form of racialization in the colonies, institutionalised and operationalised in ways never seen before in the history of empire, turned inward into Europe.

Long cast as the scapegoat for Europe’s problems, European Jewish communities, who were as European as any other European, became racialised as an “inferior race of Semites” that is “diluting the purity of the superior Arian white race.” S

This form of racialisation would culminate in Nazi Germany’s unforgivable “Final Solution.”

Well before the Holocaust, Zionism sought to address this racialization of Jewish communities and answer the “Jewish Question” of antisemitic Europe.

The problem with the answer of Zionism, however, is that instead of challenging the spurious and violent radicalisation of Europeans into “Semites” and “Aryans,” instead of standing up to the European colonial project and joining together with colonised and racialised communities across the world to dismantle colonial modernity and the Euro-American colonial project, Zionism proposed an answer whereby they would join the project of colonial modernity.

They proposed that European Jews should leave Europe and establish a European-style state in the Muslim, Arab majority Middle East.

Without the British empire, which saw the Zionist project as an asset for its imperial interests in the region and as relieving it of the “Jewish Question,” this would’ve been impossible to achieve.

Hence began the “special relationship” between Western imperial forces and the Zionist project.

They were “special” because they were both part of the same project of colonial modernity.

The exact same methods of racialisation and settler colonisation that marked the British Empire and the U.S. Empire came to mark the Zionist project.

The racialised dehumanisation, the genocidal violences, and the techniques of concealing the brutal reality of racism and colonialism are essentially what we see in GAZA today.” … 🇵🇸

so i actually found out abt jellycats in january thru the blog @.jellycatstuffies,, and it is absolutely wonderful go check out it if you can but!! back to the point

so jellycat makes stuffed animals, and each one is so perfectly designed. there's so much love and fun and energy in each plush, so no wonder they're so popular! jellycat has various lines of plushies, like the smudges, fuddlewuddles, or the bashfuls.

the smudges have long soft fur and big floppy limbs, the bashfuls have long arms and stubby legs, and the fuddlewuddles sit down with weighted paws and a rumpled fur texture. you can see the similarities between each line, and jellycat is famous for it.

these are just my favorite lines, but there's so many more! the magic of jellycat is having quality plushies in a ton of different varieties (and the organization of it all makes autistic brain go brrrrr lmao)

my faves and the whole family! notable plushies include: orion, my large onyx dragon; daffodil (top center) my blossom blush bunny who's married to lilac (not pictured, she's in my sibling's room); and their adopted son carnation (the little green bunny). also asteroid the t-rex, who's been rlly helping me come to terms w being autistic <3.

jellycats very quickly became my special interest, they're my comfort items, and i love knowing that there's other people who love them as much as i do, because that means i'm not alone. i never could be, with all of these wonderful friends :>
