Mai throws up her hands and looks at Mao, exasperation clear as the summer sun. “Forget it, he’s hopeless.”

“Hopelessly in loooooove,” Mao sings, and dodges when Kenji chucks a crumpled straw wrapper at her, laughing. “It’s cute, Kenji! It’s nice to know that you’re not all bitter black coffee.”

“I am not!” Kenji protests. “Shirabu is bitter black coffee. I’m a mocha frappuccino with extra chocolate chips, whipped cream, and a caramel drizzle on top.”

“Ennoshita doesn’t like frappuccinos,” says Mai, unhelpfully. “He always orders a peach green tea when he’s here.”

Like Kenji doesn’t know that. Like he doesn’t know that Ennoshita takes his green tea with less ice and at fifty percent sweetness. Like he doesn’t pay attention when Ennoshita tells him every tiny detail about his life, from the asshole professor he has on Tuesdays to the stray rabbit his younger cousins found and adopted. Like Kenji hasn’t catalogued every single moment they’ve ever had together, carefully preserved behind glass cases in his head like a fucking museum of shameless, relentless crushing. 

Okay, so he’s a little bit hopeless. Not that he would ever tell Mai that.

The bell hanging from the front door jingles, and Kenji perks up. Could it be — ugh, it’s just Asamushi Kaito. Kenji slumps back down, waving limply at him. Jiri isn’t in today, so at least Kenji won’t be forced to bear witness to their terrible, awful, sickening flirting.

But still no Ennoshita. This is the worst day of his life.

Asamushi orders from Mai, looks at Kenji moping, and frowns. “What’s up with him?”

“Lovesick,” Mao says brightly. “You know how it is, Asamushi. You were in a pretty sorry state yourself.”

Asamushi scowls. Ever since he and Jiri got together, the entire coffee shop has taken to teasing him whenever he comes in. Serves him right, Kenji thinks darkly, for putting poor Jiri’s heart through the wringer like that.

“He’ll cheer up once we get Ennoshita back,” Mai says. “Don’t worry about him, Asamushi, he’s just being overdramatic.”

But Asamushi, that bastard, would never let a chance to torment Kenji escape him.

“If you need help confessing, I could give you a few pointers,” he says. “Since, you know, I am the one with a boyfriend and all.”

Kenji frowns. “You left anonymous YELP reviews complimenting Jiri like a creepy stalker because you were too chicken to have a normal conversation with him that didn’t include insulting his face every five seconds.”

Asamushi flushes pink, but he manages to keep a straight face. “And it worked, you ass bastard. Guess who’s going to have some banger sex later today?”

“I can’t believe you just said that,” says Mai. “I can’t believe Jiri is dating you.”

“Can I just get my drinks, please? I’m going to be late for our date.”

“Here you go.” Kenji slides the cups across the counter. “Tell Jiri we say hi. But not while you have his dick in your mouth. I wouldn't want to kill the mood for you guys.”

This time, Asamushi’s face turns an outrageous shade of red. “Don’t you ever shut the fuck up?”

“I’d say you’ll have to make me, but I get the feeling you and Jiri do that plenty enough to each other already."

Very well balanced team, but on average they're scored slightly lower than Karasuno… No particular standouts other than Ushiwaka, but everyone is solid. I was expecting Ushiwaka to get a 6 in power tho! Once Goshiki gets that power stat up to 5 he'll be a pretty decent super ace to replace Ushijima.

I feel like this team has a lot of room for aggressive growth, don't you? Aone and Futakuchi are only going to get better, and Kogane is still a baby as a setter so 19 is really good for someone like him. Also, their blocking ability, the basis of their strength, isn't really reflected in their overall stats.

i would love to hear your thoughts/casting on a princess and the pauper au!! that movie was my childhood 😭

OMG YES LET'S GET IT!!!

this might get kind of long bc this can go two ways, really

so the first one i am SUPER into and that's a sakunami/shibayama switch for the prince and the pauper!! sakunami would be the prince and shibayama would be the pauper, and this would follow the part of the barbie movie where the pauper person falls for a visiting prince, who in this case would be lev. and when sakunami switches to the pauper life, he meets the one and only koganegawa kanji!! tbh this one wouldn't really do the whole "royal goes missing and you must take their place", i'd probably adjust some of the plot for it to be something else

BUT if we wanted to follow the movie EXACTLY, then i am SUPER SUPER into it being yahaba shigeru and numajiri rintarou, mostly because i think it'd be REALLY funny. so in this one numajiri would be the prince and rather than a tutor, he has kyoutani kentarou as his personal aide/guard. and when jiri goes missing, kyoutani recruits yahaba to replace him!! the only problem is that kyoutani and yahaba have such a hard time getting along LMFAO, so it's a struggle to keep up the image when they're at each other's throats so often (and then they fall in love anyways). meanwhile, jiri has been kidnapped but escapes and meets asamushi kaito and crew. i haven't quite figured out asamushi's role in all this yet, but i adore asajiri and i really wanted to include them somehow LMAO

so there you have it!! i'm very fond of both and if i were to write them i'd probably do one that's like . . . typical fantasy setting like the movie and the other a modern kind of thing, so that way they're not TOO similar LMAO. tbh you could probably do even MORE versions (semi and suga, iwa or mattsun or akaashi, so many buzzcut characters??) but i love the ones i have right now

altho. semi and suga would make an EXCELLENT duo for this . . .

higashi and narita are friends and nobody knows how it happened, but the team always finds higashi texting him a lot and laughing over stupid jokes and higashi is always telling them about some cool new song that narita recommended him -

okay so maybe higashi likes him a little bit more than as just a friend

futamata keeps stealing higashi's phone to text narita pickup lines

higashi, panicking: "what does it mean when he asks you to make a spotify playlist with him?" jiri, thinking about the time asamushi sent him a link to a playlist where the first letter of every song name aligned to spell 'go fuck yourself': "he's declaring war on you"

nobody would really care that higashi and narita like each other but. for some reason kinoshita and futamata do NOT get along. they always almost 1v1 each other whenever karasuno and johzenji meet

it would be funny if it didn't stress out tsucchi out so much bc he and noya are the ones in charge of making sure either futamata or kinoshita don't like. actually end up decking each other or whatever

terushima is constantly texting misaki ominous updates like "it's okay nobody got arrested yet!!" or "dw the gym is NOT on fire and that's what counts" and misaki gets a year taken off her life every single time

the day terushima showed up to practice with a tongue piercing was the day okudake decided to retire as early as possible as captain

hyakuzawa may be 6"7 and could probably knock out a person with a solid hit but like. the entire goddamn team would fight you if you shit talked him.

he is both extremely embarrassed and very grateful at the same time

the "protect hyakuzawa yuudai" club is led by komaki, asamushi, and minamida

for those of you who don't know: komaki is their captain/setter with the glasses, minamida is their chill go-with-the-flow libero, and asamushi is a wing spiker with a temperament kind of like tanaka and noya

pls there was a scene where they all smiled at each other over hyakuzawa so like. they're definitely a trio and they only share one brain cell between them

komaki is usually in possession of said brain cell

when hyakuzawa comes back from the mock training camp and is like "me and the little dude from karasuno are cool now" the team is highkey sus

asamushi is like "what if the lil guy is trying to take advantage of him!!" and komaki immediately goes "no he's not smart enough for that" and hyakuzawa doesn't know whether to be insulted on hinata's behalf or relieved that they're not going to crucify him

asamushi is still very insistent and concerned and is debating on hunting down hinata and giving him a platonic shovel talk

komaki: DO NOT GIVE HIM A FUCKING SHOVEL TALK minamida, in the background: bring a knife with you when you go!

on that note komaki swears like a sailor bc of how much his friends stress him out but he doesn't do it much in public bc he's got an image to keep

there's a running joke that they could swap komaki out with futakuchi from dateko and neither team would know

seriously hyakuzawa and kogane have this whole "twins separated at birth" theory that should NEVER reach their captains' ears

kakugawa is on good terms with wakunan and johzenji bc they're all the cool overlooked schools that don't get enough recognition for having cool matches with karasuno </3

also it says on the wiki that kakugawa and johzenji faced each other in the summer interhigh and all i can think about is minamida and tsuchiyu being buddies and the only goddamn thing keeping their teams from breaking out into war

(this is mostly due to numajiri and asamushi having this Thing where they act like they hate each other to cover up mutual pining and it's absolutely horrible to watch)
