(aka kennedy made an excellent excellent post and i realized I WAS PART OF THE PROBLEM so now we have miyagi manager headcanons bc i don't do nearly enough for them . . . also have a healthy side of runayachi)

runa feels like soft synth pop and slow sweet indie music and makes playlists to show her love, so while yachi definitely does not understand the significance of getting a playlist from her the rest of johzenji does!!

she's in charge of the aux cord when they hit the road for games and the team always has the best time jamming out together even if they have no volume control and annoy every car within a five mile radius

(also if you remember my post where higashi and narita bond over playlists? this is totally where higashi gets it from)

speaking of which i think yachi is pretty oblivious when it comes to someone actively trying to flirt with her, especially if it's not in a way she recognizes from shoujo manga LMAAAO

it's because she always thought she was in the background!!! character b!!!! a tree!!! she doesn't think that stuff would happen to her!!! she reads high school romance manga and recognizes the obvious stuff when it happens (i.e. hinata grabbing her hand and pulling her through the city on a mad dash) but it's a SURPRISE bc why would it happen to HER!!!! she doesn't think anyone would be interested in her enough, and definitely would not flirt in ways she's not familiar with!!!

so basically runa is in for a hell of a time trying to show yachi she likes her without saying it

runa got convinced to sign up as team manager when misaki caught her crouching outside the gym one day bc she was trying to figure out a way to repay jiri and higashi for helping her catch her dog when he'd gotten loose during a walk the other day

otherwise runa would be in the music club with her mad piano/keyboard skills

sometimes misaki wonders if she took something away from runa because runa really is talented and would probably thrive in music club and she always seems so anxious with the team (they can be a bit much, she knows) and she tells runa that it's okay for her to leave not knowing that it would break her entire heart

is runa not wanted??? did she do something wrong??? did they not like her??? but she thought she was getting along so well with them, she really considered them her friends . . .

anyways everyone barely lasts two days before they're clamoring to get runa back and it turns into a whole messy thing where runa keeps avoiding them bc seeing them hang out without her makes her sad so it becomes a game of "who the hell can get runa to stay still and let us talk"

in the end it's jiri (FULL CIRCLE!!!) who manages to get her to listen and there's a lot of tears and snot and hugs from everyone all around

nametsu kicks ass in competitive pokemon battling. i don't even know how it works myself i just know she would

she'd really like to design/code her own game someday and have her own game development studio!!! her notebooks are full of little doodles and sketches of all her ideas

(i am still so salty we never got a timeskip appearance for her)

through the power of 'everyone is following everyone in the high school boys' volleyball circuit' nametsu gets hooked up with kenma and he becomes her number one beta tester and gamer nerd friend

she's a big fan of visual novels and mmorpgs and ropes futakuchi, aone, onagawa, and obara into playing with her

okay yeah kogane and sakunami too

(she tried with the third years, but moniwa is for some reason terrible with technology, kamasaki keeps trying to fight things like 20 levels higher than him and dies without ever improving, and sasaya just likes collecting things to cook with)

also i DO think nametsu actually grows pretty close to runa and yachi and keeps an eye out for them because as much as yachi and runa admired kiyoko and misaki they were third years with their shit (relatively) together as the third years tended to be, whereas nametsu is a hot mess second year figuring things out (which makes her less scary) but still has the experience that lets runa and yachi see her as some sort of authority even if it's just by a year

tl;dr nametsu is more approachable as a second year so she, yachi, and runa actually develop more of a friendship where neither yachi or runa are tripping over their tongues all the time

i like to think that nametsu and futakuchi met aone in middle school and they took him under their wing, which means aone's social buffs were futakuchi being a little bitch and nametsu being a little bitch in a completely opposite way

in nametsu's first year she got insecure bc she didn't know if the team saw her as "aone's and futakuchi's friend" and only talked to her because of that or if they cared about her as a person individually and she was too afraid to ask

but they did!!!!! onagawa always walked partway home with her even after they left futakuchi and aone, obara always wanted her opinion on pc mods and games and whatever, moniwa always asked to go out to coffee shops and hang out . . . and so on and so forth

nametsu didn't really believe it until they all pitched in to throw her a surprise birthday party and the cake was her favorite flavor (chocolate orange) and futakuchi was like "yeah i put onagawa and obara in charge of that and didn't really tell them to do much other than don't fuck it up" which meant. they LISTENED to her and they cared enough to know her favorite flavor and to even decorate it with a stupid coding joke and and and -

she almost burst out into tears right then and there

it was okay, though. they ended up having a lot of fun!

Trick or treat!

"How did you guys get in here?" Mai asks.

The volleyball falls to the floor. Aone and Futakuchi turn to her.

"I have a key," Futakuchi says when the silence gets too loud.

"Liar." Mai reaches into her pocket and pulls out the key to the gym. "Coach gave me the key for safekeeping."

Aone points at Futakuchi, who scowls.

"I have the spare key," Futakuachi amends.

"Coach has the spare." Mai twirls the gym key around her finger. "Try again."

Aone points at the door, then at Futakuchi.

Mai squints at Aone, then at Futakuchi, who's elbowing Aone, then at the door. The pieces click into place.

"Since when can you pick locks?" Mai demands.

"That's illegal," Futakuchi replies. "I can't pick locks."

Aone snorts.

Mai sighs. "Whatever," she says. "Next time, call me."

"You were late," Futakuchi grumbles. "Aone and I wanted to start practice."

"By ten minutes!"

I’ve been meaning to post these for a while, we’re not technically done, since I haven’t done Mikoto yet, but what can you do.

From top left to bottom right, it is Dot(Grimoire), Tenten(Tome), and Mai(Archive), then on the bottom it’s Ivy(name undecided), and Kushina(Kitsune).

The top three are the focus of Shuriken, Spikes and Swords, a crossover magical girl au I’m still working on, although it is fully planned out, just not fully written out.

Kushina and Mikoto were the generation before them, so they function a bit as mentors. I'm hoping to write out some shenanigans from when they were active. I've been meaning to get around to doing Mikoto, although I haven't managed it yet. I have a sketch for her, I just have to do it.

Ivy will be introduced in a second fic, something I had been intending to do anyway, just because it's been a lot of fun working on SSS. I had been intending to just continue with the three from the first one, however...I am not active in loz anymore, and that is very much on purpose, so I'd rather not have a fic still involving that. So, we're swapping Dot out. She'll just be moving away and Ivy will take her place. Ivy will be a couple years younger then Tenten, so just a year younger then Dot.

Design notes going from top left to bottom right:

Dot: Her colors were a little rough since, well, almost all of her associated colors are already in Tenten or Mai. Pink, Red, and Teal all show up in one of those two. So it was a bit of a struggle to work that out. I think it worked out alright in the end though. Her design was originally a bit more complicated, then someone noted that her design was more complicated then Tenten and Mai's, so I ended up simplifying it a bit in the final version. She does have a cape, although it's rather hard to see. I swear it's there though. The bag at her side holds her magical item, which is a book, a grimoire you could say. It holds spells and potions and other such things. Her and Tenten were designed first, then Mai, so I could work out what things the two of them had in common and make them show up in Mai, since she had the least direction as she doesn't have any particular typical outfit from her anime. If you're wondering, the golden orb is magic and yes it's fully there to hide the fingers of that hand. We don't talk about that hand. Oh yes, please note the crown as well, that blue diamond is something you can note shows up on Tenten, Mai, and Ivy. It's a sort of team identifier thing. It's used when multiple teams of magical girls are in the same area, for something like a natural disaster usually.

Tenten: I settled on that hair option after it was decided to be the superior one between it and something similar but with braids. That one's probably more fun, if very Sailor Moon ish. Oh well. Her outfit does look very similar to one of her canon ones, which of course is on purpose, although note her forehead protector has the blue diamond on it instead of the Konoha symbol. She has a thigh pouch, and the bag hanging from her waist holds her magic item, which is a scroll similar to the ones she used in Konoha. When she's transformed it holds seals for all weapons she used in Konoha, when she's not, she draws her own seals on it, and those work like normal seals where she needs to put something in to take something out, as opposed to the transformed seals, which just spawn things in for her. There's a good chance I designed her first, since she's got the easiest design. You'll notice the waist belt system thing also shows up on Kushina and will show up on Mikoto, that is on purpose.

Mai: There was no particular reason for the boob window, Mai just wanted one and thought it was fun. Which, fair. It's mostly blocked by her hand in the drawing though. She's holding her magical item, which is a binder she writes in. She uses it to keep track of things, including the kinds of monsters they're seeing and in what quantities. She's got a couple other uses for it too, but that's the big one. She's technically a support type magical girl as she does not have magic from a past life, but she does still have magic she can use. Her specific ability is to briefly slow down time. She can't use it for very long though, as she doesn't have much magic. She's got blue diamond earrings, and if you're wondering, no one can pull on them, they're actively not technically attached to her ears. Not just a design choice they're actively not attached. Grab one and pull and you're just going to pull it away. It'll reattach itself when you let go. Notes I had when designing her outfit primarily were the skirt design, the lining of the top and sleeves, the gloves length, the bag, and the presence of the blue diamonds. Oh and the boots being like that. Her hair is held back by a headband, to go with the forehead protector on Tenten, and Dot's crown and hair bow.

Kushina: Her name is Kitsune, I'm sure you can guess why. She originally did have the long elf-like ears the others do, but after she figured out she could change her transformed state, she swapped them out for the big fox ears. It doesn't really matter as long as the ears aren't human. (Editor's note, here I realized while looking at my Ivy design that I had forgotten to do the long ears, and hurried off to fix that, this post has the proper version.) The whiskers on her face are fully because she knows Naruto had em in the other world, and she remembered his birth(and her death) soon after she became a magical girl. So there are very very few pictures of the times Kushina didn't have whiskers or big fox ears. Her magical item is the necklace, Mikoto's is also a necklace, although hers is a hawk. If you're wondering, Mikoto does have giant hawk wings, just because she could. And she should match Kushina. Kushina's actually wearing shorts under the green over dress.

And Last but Not least, Ivy: I lowkey almost forgot to draw the long ears on em. Luckily I remembered before posting this lol. Most important thing here and now: I'm going with a genderfluid Ivy! Mostly since I think it'll be fun. There is gender stuff going on with the whole magical girl situation, and while this isn't on display with any of the others, I figured I might as well get someone on board who could show off that side of this. that's mostly why I ended up picking Ivy out of all of my options for who would replace Dot. I'll just be using she when describing Ivy this time, but I'll probably switch it up in future posts. Ivy's one of the rare genderfluid magical girls who doesn't mind being active when they're not a girl, many genderfluid individuals who become magical girls are only working essentially part time. Whenever they comfortable with it. They're only found in teams of 3 or more because of that, so there's always at least two active magical girls. Actual design notes now: She's wearing kind of a variant on what she's normally wearing in the show, just without the jacket. Her magical item is Sora, although the slime only comes alive when she's transformed. Otherwise it's just a cute little plushie she carries around. She does have a fourth bag in the back attached to the belt around her waist, similar to in the show, and she can pull about anything out of those bags that she wants to. Similar to Tenten's scroll, they just spawn in the item she needs, although they are temporary. The blue diamond is on her bag strap, so still visible. Sora often hides out in the red bag, and is capable of healing large injuries, as well as smaller scrapes. Can and will eat bigger things now as well, although still prefers the potions Ivy can toss it. You will note that Ivy doesn't match Tenten and Mai quite as well as they match each other and Dot, that is on purpose, that's fairly typical for magical girl teams where one person was added later, since Ivy didn't become active at the same time as them, although they are her first team, she's technically considered a latecomer, which isn't bad. It's fairly normal for magical girl teams to switch up who's in them, especially early on when everyone is in college and early adulthood. Oh yeah you can note that her bangs are slightly off, particularly in the front, that is on purpose on her part, they look like Lattrua's.

Ennoshita isn’t here today.

Kenji sighs and stares, despondent, at the empty armchair where Ennoshita usually sits when he visits. It’s been a few days since he last stopped by, and the withdrawal is starting to take its toll. 

“You know,” says Mai, “you wouldn’t have to sit and wait for him to come around if you had just asked for his number.”

Kenji whips around to scowl at her. “Like you have room to talk. Didn’t you say you were going to ask out Misaki on Tuesday?”

Mai flushes red. “It was bad timing! I wasn’t going to ask her in the middle of the rush hour.”

“She was literally the only one in the shop.”

“Yes, but she was in a rush,” says Mai haughtily. “Hence, it was a rush hour for her.”

Kenji rolls his eyes. “Whatever makes you feel better.”

“I heard the film department had a pretty big project to finish up this week,” Aihara Mao chimes in. “That’s probably why he hasn’t been here. Cheer up, Kenji, I’m sure he’ll be back soon enough.”

“You make me sound obsessed with him,” Kenji grumbles, burying his face in his arms. Honestly, he knows he kind of is. Not obsessed, no, that’s creepy. He’s just . . . incredibly conscious of Ennoshita’s presence and the lack thereof. Observant. Attentive. Vigilant.

Addicted, Jiri had called him once.

“Kogane-kun told me he couldn’t stop staring at you the last time he was here,” Mai says. “You can’t tell me that doesn’t mean something.” 

“Maybe I was having a bad hair day.”

Mai throws up her hands and looks at Mao, her exasperation as clear as the summer sun. “Forget it, he’s hopeless.”

“Hopelessly in loooooove,” Mao sings, and dodges when Kenji chucks a crumpled straw wrapper at her, laughing. “It’s cute, Kenji! It’s nice to know that you’re not all bitter black coffee.”

“I am not!” Kenji protests. “Shirabu is bitter black coffee. I’m a mocha frappuccino with extra chocolate chips, whipped cream, and a caramel drizzle on top.”

“Ennoshita doesn’t like frappuccinos,” points out Mai, unhelpfully. “He always orders a peach green tea when he’s here.”

Like Kenji doesn’t know that. Like he doesn’t know that Ennoshita takes his green tea with less ice and at half the sweetness. Like he doesn’t pay attention when Ennoshita tells him every miniscule detail about his life, from the asshole professor he has on Tuesdays to the stray rabbit his younger cousins adopted. Like Kenji hasn’t catalogued every single moment they’ve ever had together, carefully preserved behind glass cases in his head like a fucking museum of shameless, relentless crushing. 

Okay, so he’s a little bit hopeless. Not that he would ever tell Mai that.

Trick or treat Narita and Mai

Come trick or treating in my inbox! Leave a “Trick or Treat” and a character or ship in an ask, and I’ll treat you to some autumn-themed fluff or trick you with some twisted spooky aus!

Trick So as usual, Ezzy and I have no chill, and may or may not have challenged each other to take a list of pretty, soft autumn prompts and use those for our tricks this year. At least, that’s what I heard, in between the sass and the frankly terrifying butter gifs… Anyway, this one's prompt is "walking past somewhere you heard is haunted."

They said the old house was haunted. They talked about it in whispers, glancing at it askance and shuffling past more quickly than the houses on either side. The neighborhood kids made up songs about it and dared each other to step across the threshold of the gate, though none of them ever did. The neighborhood moms laughed at their children’s antics, but they certainly never stepped closer, either. The neighborhood teenagers pretended not to care, to be too old for childish fears, but they too gave it nervous looks. The more superstitious would hold their breath as they passed by.

Kazuhito knew all of this, knew exactly why he shouldn’t be there the day he walked up the overgrown path to the big old house on the hill. But something about the place, its sad old visage and the way the trees creaked in warning and the skittering leaves across the path, something didn’t feel dangerous to him. It just felt lonely. When he reached the front steps, when he pressed his hand to the wood of the door, when he looked up at the peeling paint and the crooked shutters and the spot where there had once been a welcome mat but was now just a patch of evidence of what once was, that loneliness settled into his bones.

“Oh,” he breathed. “No one’s been here in a very long time, have they?”

He reached into his bag and pulled out what little he had, just a pair of incense sticks, a holder, and a lighter.

“It’s not much,” he said. “I honestly wasn’t expecting to come here today. I’ve been thinking abou tit, sure, but I hadn’t actually decided… Anyway. Like I said, it’s not much, but I hope it helps, just a little.” He bent to place the holder on the welcome matt’s outline, slipping the ends of the sticks inside. “I can come back sometime, maybe in a few days, and leave something else. Whatever you were, once, it’s not fair for you to be stuck here, avoided and forgotten.”

He lit the incense and lowered his head in prayer, just for a moment. Then, with a smile at the face of the old house, he stood and left.

She watched from the upper window, unseen and unnoticed, but she herself seeing and noticing everything. He would be back, she knew. She had a way of knowing these things, a sense for the game that humans played. She had done her research, after all, though such things were difficult when she was trapped within these walls.

Well, she thought, slipping through wood and concrete, between nails and stones, down to the front steps to mingle with the smoke, not for long. Soon she would have a new body, a strong young man’s body, to take her out into the town once more.

He would be back, and sooner than he thought. She already had her hooks in him.

Leaning back into the door and watching a pair of children race past on the sidewalk, she smiled. Only a matter of time, now.

It’s Mai in her work uniform shirt, and Kushina in her transformed state. I wanted to test out the hair style on characters that I didn’t have a reference for with the hair. I’m not super sure about the colors for Mai’s hair, but it looks alright enough. I think Kushina’s looks better, but that may just be because the coloring style looks a bit better on bright hair colors. Still looks fun on Mai though, so I’ll probably try and keep it.
