Shotaro Ishinomori’s A Link To The Past: The Graphic Novel

Only few things are worse than people that browse stuff in a library and put books on the shelves with the pages showing instead of its spine, covering the titles for others! This way, a lot of gems pass under unsuspecting eyes, remaining unnoticed. My boyfriend has the habit of tidying up such misplacements whenever we visit a bookstore, so while checking what was new at the local library in town, he happened to find this cute lil’ comic in his hands; needless to say I snatched it up as soon as the golden print of its title encountered my gaze :V

I wasn’t aware these collections were being published in Italy! Then again, it’s a very recent publication and it may not have gotten the advertising it deserves. Also, I think the J-Pop publisher is italian based only... This graphic novel adaptation of A Link To The Past, done by Shotaro Ishinomori (who worked on Kamen Rider comic renditions as well!), was originally split in episodes and published on the Nintendo Power magazine in the year 1992! The issues from 32 to 43 had the 12 chapters which are alltogether in this collection. And look, it has the official Nintendo logo as well! <3

Artistically speaking, A Link To The Past is absolutely gorgeous: completely drawn with traditional media (ranging from watercolours to inks and acrylics, as far as I can tell), Ishinomori’s talent is especially expressed in splash pages, in which the brush strokes are especially visible. Not to mention the variety of expressions Link and the many other characters show! It’s a small comic, nearly the same size as a standard Marvel, but its 200 pages are asbeautiful as ever and definitely worth the price, which afterall is rather standard for graphic novels.

I do hope that J-Pop will also publish other Nintendo Power original series, especially the StarFox one!

He had been young and fit, in the prime of his life and finally free tostart living it, or so he’d thought. Either way, Anders could see how someone like that could be seen asbeautiful, but he had never felt it.  Notthen, not truly, and certainly not now.

He raised his cupped hands up and let the cool watergathered in his palms cascade down his face. Blood, sweat, tears and the general muck that covered all of Darktown drippedslowly off his chin and returned to the basin a murky grey.  Anders blinked away the drops stubbornly clingingto his eyelashes and looked up at the smudged and cracked mirror.

Anders snorted softly and turned away from mussing on hisown sad appearance in favor of starting his day.  It wasn’t as though it mattered what helooked like.  You didn’t need good looksto heal the sick, kill bandits or liberate mages from the Gallows.  Besides,I’ve got to be an improvement over your last place, right?  It’s hard to do worse than a corpse.

His lips twitched faintly at the expected feeling ofconfused agreement that filtered through his and Justice’s ever-growingconnection.  Anders couldn’t really blamethe Spirit for finding his sudden preoccupation with his attractiveness (orlack thereof) baffling.  It wasn’t asthough he had actually meant it…

Loneliness could be a powerful drug, perhaps even morepotent than the fair amount of wine they’d drunk that night (despite Justice’snudges of disapproval).  It had been powerfulenough to make them forget they were supposed to hate each other as theytumbled in to the elf’s bed in a tangle of limbs.  Powerful enough to make them arch into eachother’s touch like men starved.  Powerfulenough for Anders to imagine that he saw something in those fathomless emeraldeyes as the moved together, something that wasn’t fear or loathing but wasevery bit as frightening.  Powerfulenough to make him believe his Tevene was better than it likely was, for surelythe words Fenris had murmured as he entered the Fade hadn’t been what Anders clumsilytranslated from his studies in the circle…

Anders tucked away those green green eyes, those soft lips that could kiss and smile and Maker evenlaugh just as well as they couldbrood, those panted breaths and whispered words that he would always remember,even if he could never believe them.  Putthem away with all the other rare and beautiful things he’d managed to scavengefrom a world that had been more often cruel than kind.  His Mutti’s smile with her left cheekdimpling just so, the whole sky shining in Karl’s blue eyes that Anders wascertain he could have flown free in forever, Pounce lounging in the sun on thewindowsill at the keep purring and utterly at peace, Hawke’s charming grin andcarefree laugh, the sound of Varric’s quill scratching against parchment in a crowdedtavern, Isabela smirking as she jostled him with a bump of her hip, the look ona Gallows mage’s face when they first emerged from the sewers outside the citywalls and into a new life of running, of persecution, of freedom.

He closed his eyes and pictured those mages far away fromKirkwall, saw them building homes with green grass and clear sky and not alocked door in sight, saw them finding partners and starting families, saw themteaching their children about the gift their Maker had blessed them with.

It was beautiful.

I really hope that with all the messages going around and the images of new mothers with their babies, and even some of the 6 months to years later photos of mothers holding their children, showing what pregnancy did to change their bodies, girls with stretch marks. Vitiligo, scarring, missing limbs, down syndrome, etc modeling that maybe in the next few generations we wont have little girls thinking they're not ok because their organs womt let them have a flat stomach at age 14. Maybe if we keep these trends going, little boys wont think they're too skinny or too fat, or just never buff enough. Maybe we can convince people that a healthy body fat is ok. That you dont have to have an athlete's or runway model's body type to be happy, healthy and beautiful. I really hope society can eventually come to a point where we treat everyone's bodies asbeautiful, and we eliminate the body insecurities caused by the way media presents "healthy" and "beautiful" so often now. Some people will always have inherent body insecurities. Eating disorders arent always about trying to be skinny. Some people will always compare themselves to bodies around them. But maybe we can work to a place where our media and our society doesnt make us feel inferior for having our natural body. Maybe we can convince people their cellulite is just as beautiful as someone with none. That yes, your wrinkles are beautiful because they show how much life you've gotten to live. And maybe not have a billboard that says "wrinkles are cute on puppies. You're not a puppy". Maybe we can have these beauty treatments and things like botox and fillers advertised as optional. Maybe we can get to where fashion, beauty and any body related trends dont rely on shaming you for your body, your age, your skintone. Maybe one day we can let people who want botox have botox and NOT shame them for wanting it. Maybe we can let people who want to embrace their wrinkles embrace those wrinkles.
