The earth shatters like a fist through a mirror, shards so sharp and splintered they feel like snow against your skin.                     

You think this is what it costs, to know you. this is what it costs, to hold you close.

You are young when the angel first comes to you, young enough that you feel you’ve known him all your life. One day you are angel-less and the next, he’s sitting perched on the edge of your mattress, wax dripping from his wings and pooling over every surface, still hot to the touch. 

The angel does not speak with his mouth, because he does not have one. His eyes are like those little plastic candles that your mother puts in the windows every Yom Kippur, bright and glowing in a way that does not seem natural.

You do not know he is an angel at first. You do not know what he is. You only know you are scared, and you want him to leave.

He says Do not fear me, as you do not fear the moon or the stars, for I am every light in every darkness, and I am here to keep you safe.

You say I’m not supposed to talk to strangers, and the angel does not smile with his mouth, because he does not have one. Instead he smiles with everything else, and the heat of it nearly cuts you in half.

He reaches out a hand, all skinny bones that don’t look right, everything about him just a little too thin, just a little too stretched out, just a little too hot and bright and prickly. You put your fingers in his and this time, his smile barely stings at all. 

He says so let us not be strangers.

The heavens split open like ripping a seam, swarms of angels spilling out like loose change, an eleventh plague loosed upon humanity. You stare at them for a while, eyes squinted and flooding from the pain of it, like looking at a million tiny suns, like looking at an eclipse with no glasses. There will be lasting side effects, you know.

You ask was it always going to end this way?

You are staring at the sky like you’re waiting to be swallowed. The angel is staring at you. Does it matter?

Of course it matters, you think, everything matters. You say this is what it costs, to write the story.

The angel brushes crooked knuckles against your cheek, too graceful for their size and shape, and now there are streaks of wet across your skin. Wax or tears or both--angels are made up of each, equally. He says you were never the writer. You were the scribe.

The angel brings you prophecies like presents, plants dreams of hell-fire and apocalypses at your feet like a garden; acacia, hyssop, myrrh. 

Here, he tells you, watering the seeds of his gifts until you choke with them, until you’re leaking gold dust from your nail-beds and the corners of your eyes. Until you bleed from the mouth with it. Here, here, here. See and hear and know. Let the knowing fill you up and flow across the pages so that everyone will know how it happened.

You grow up watching the world crack and die a hundred different ways in your sleep. You wake up in the morning, gagging on ashes. Your fingers cramp from writing deep into the night, the angel always burning at your shoulder blades, thumbing through the books on your shelves, poking through old jewelry boxes and school projects, endlessly fascinated by the pieces that make up your life. 

You wake up screaming, ribs still aching from where they were crushed by temple stones as the planet shuddered and fell apart. The angel is sitting in a floral armchair by your bedside. He reaches out, rubs the sweaty hair from your face, presses sharp bones against yours until you can breathe again. 

You’re wet from where he’s touched you, his grief spilling out of him wherever it can, soaking your bedspread. Grief for you, grief for this world, grief for the heaven you know he misses but can’t climb back to--you aren’t sure. Maybe all of it. 

Maybe you will never understand what makes an angel cry.

You brush the liquid from his papery cheeks, saline-smooth on your skin, smearing with the wax like finger paint. You say you’ve shown me a hundred different endings. How do I know which one will happen? Which one is the truth?

You have known the angel all your life, but his voice never gets softer, less like acupuncture, easier to listen to. He says they are all the truth. They have all happened already, and they will all happen again. You cannot have rebirth without dying first. This is what it costs, to be immortal. 

You spread your arms out as you feel the first bits of rain like hot oil on your scalp, scorching the most tender parts of you. The angel lets you wrap yourself around him like ivy on a pole, tight enough to strangle, tight enough that when your skin presses down on his sharp-angled bones, he draws blood.

You think this is what it costs, to have you. This is what it costs, to not let go.

The world heaves one last breath around you, standing on the breastbone of a corpse. The angel is slick, and so you are slick. The angel is on fire, and so you are on fire.

You say this is what it costs, to know the truth of it all.

He says nothing can be won, without sacrifice. This is the cost of existence.

🌀 here's a random fact from this book about film I've been reading: in 1922, Rin Tin Tin, cinema's first canine star, saved Warner Bros. from bankruptcy + 🔰 my best friend was born one day after me, at the same hospital, and that's how we basically met. If that isn't destiny then I don't know what it is :)) we're still friends after all these years and I couldn't imagine my life if we weren't friends tbh

🌀&🔰 I'm really tired from work &all I can come up with is a little story. I work in a supermarket &we share our stockroom with a toy shop that has a lot of star wars merch. They passed with a full toy cart and it had sw merch on the side and I was like "oooh cool" and the manager of the shop asked if I liked sw and then he told me they had free comics (though like you get them if you buy certain things I guess) & he'd give me one if I came during my break, so now I have a new hope in comic ^_^
