Consider this... The Nightmare of Apathy but Dreamswap

I'm kinda experiencing brainrot over Helios and Eos at the moment...

Dream is the one who rules over a world that is permanently day where everyone is happy and adores him. I imagine there would be sun worship but it's morphed into worshipping the deity that literally glows and makes everyone's life better.

Plant life flourishes and the climate is always comfortably warm. I don't think animal life would be much different with permanent sunlight but I'm not going to be putting thought into this right now lol.

Somehow, MC (probably named something vaguely related to the sun to have a nice parallel) meets Dream. Not sure how or why but it would either be transactional or a coincidence. Or maybe they have a "dark opposite" soul and Dream wants to "fix" them.

Dream and Nightmare still quarrel over the multiverse, although Dream has more influence thanks to time and positivity being easier to spread. Nightmare is gaining ground though which is rather concerning to Dream.

Nightmare forms his own team, not sure if it'd be the usual rabble or others. Without spoiling possible future plot points for TNA, there is a conflict between the brothers that leads Dream to forming his team. Again, possibly the usual rabble but it could be interesting if he "converts" bad guys to his cause.

I could go on but I will end up spoiling the finale to my fic... ಠ⁠_⁠ಠ

Or maybe it's like how Swapfell and Fellswap are similar but different? (Swapdream?)

Same premise as above, but Aylin is on Nightmare's side the whole time. ("Dark opposite" soul again?) I think this would be more like a desperate rebellion against a vast empire, except the rebels are technically the bad guys. So lots of angst and action scenes where they barely get out alive?

Aylin would meet Nightmare on more normal terms. He isn't a domineering lord but a pathetic outcast, hated by everyone because he only brings negativity when he's around. Or maybe his world is the one place his brother can't "taint" and while he's not loved by the populace, they understand all would be lost if he wasn't trying to maintain the balance. Maybe the economy is hyper focused on production for war efforts?

They'd get into a relationship much more quickly, especially after saving each other's lives a couple of times. Nightmare teaches her to fight, use magic, and possibly other skills he learned too. In turn, she teaches him what she knows as a herbalist and creates many valuable tonics and potions for conflict.

They pick up friends along the desperate, uphill, in the rain battle that is trying to re-establish emotional balance in the multiverse. Could be the usual rabble, although they'd probably have to rescue them from Dream's clutches first. Not sure if the boys would be more or less insane, especially if Dream was forcing them to be positive through magic.

The duo aren't loved by the majority of the multiverse and would likely run into many powerful players. Or maybe Dream hires bounty hunters to go after them. (Fresh might make sense here as he isn't a good guy and probably wouldn't appreciate Dream.)

The potential for a "happy" ending is very low and something drastic would have to occur for that to even happen. I would explain what but again, I'd literally spoil everything for TNA...

I think I like this idea much more than the previous one... (⁠-⁠_⁠-⁠;⁠)

You gave me many many thoughts thank you very much. Sorry for the wait but here’s my info dump—

For Nightmare, I’d have changed his design a little bit. Three sets of front legs AND wings is a lot, so off with one pair. He’d obviously have webbed wings, and Passive wise, doesn’t do much to the design itself. But CORRUPTED Noots…

I imagine they’d not only have no webbing, but also just… be very sticky. The fingers get gooped together a lot, and he always has to stretch em out to make them less irritating. Not that it lasts long, but he does his best to keep ‘em from globbing together again!

Dream, meanwhile, he’s honestly a lot like Winged!Dream. Not a lot changes, aside from maybe throwing in a few feathers here and there for funsies, like on his chest. (I also put some on his elbows/wrist as a fun nod to my next point…)

There… technically already IS a winged version of Dream ehehehe. I think I’ve talked about Dreamswap once before in an ask?? But I’ve never nailed down his design, and I really wanted to do that, so! Bonus!

Boi’s got two pairs of wings, with one set that’s connected to his paws and the other just on their own (which he got after eating the golden apple). Think Stormcutter in HTTYD. He’s bigger than TTS!Dream, has longer, more tree like horns he constantly has to trim down, can stand tall, and no, I did not desperately want this design to work out purely so DS!Nightmare and his crew (and probably Blue) can call him a duel-winged-cockatrice absolutely not I am FAR more mature than that—

Hey! Uh sorry, I only write a few of those ^^' I have a list of names on my thing. It's pinned.

Nightmare: Nightmare wouldn't exactly go out of his way to be a father. It isn't something that he wanted to do! But, now that he is, he would take care of his babybones. It isn't rare to see him carrying the small bundle of blankets around with him in his tentacles. While working he would rock them with his tentacles to help them fall asleep, and since he doesn't need to sleep almost at all, he would take care of them while his datemate slept. Of course he IS sometimes busy, so he couldn't spend his time with them all the time… he would try to act like he doesn't care abot them, but it's easy to tell that he does.

Dusty: He would be a shockingly good dad, but only when he COULD dad. You see, sometimes he has a hard time pushing himself to do things and sometimes he would accidentally lash out. He tries his best to not do that! When he takes care of his babybones, he'll be pretty good to them. He'll listen to them talk, plays with them all the time, and loves it whenever they want to lay on him but sometimes he just can't handle it. He would try to teach his kids to do things thta they shouldn't… like how to pick locks, or how to throw knives and blah blah blah. Baby likes to sleep on top of him because he's so hot.

Axe: He would be SO good at taking care of children! He has always wanted to have children and to take care of them, even if he didn't think that he could because of his low magic levels. Sometimes he would feel nervous to be around his babybones too much, mostly because of how sharp he is! Babies are so soft and squishy, and he's sharp and hard. The baby would look so small in his hands, and he cried the first time that he held them. Baby has him wrapped around their little finger in no time and he can't punish them for almost anything, unless it's really bad.

Killer: Sometimes he treats his kids more like friends, rather than his children. It isn't always a good thing, and sometimes he'll talk them into doing stuff that they shouldn't, just because he finds it fun! Other than that, he is a good dad, just… I dunno, sometimes not a good one. He'll get better as the time goes along, I'm sure.

Error: Wouldn't be a good dad. They've made it VERY clear that they DON'T want to be a parent. They wouldn't help with the kid unless they were forced to, and even then, they don't want to. Sorry ^^'

Daydream: Daydream would be a very good parent, but only sometimes. You see, he likes it when his kids behave but when they don't, he doesn't mind punishing them! He gives them a lot of stuff that they would want, but if they act out, he will show them that he isn't going to take whatever they give him. Other than that, he's a pretty good caretaker :)

Dreamswap Pokémon Teams

Disclaimer: These teams were made before Pokémon Scarlet & Violet came out, meaning that no Pokémon from the most recent games will be present! These teams are also not meant to be balanced, and I choose them purely off what Pokémon I think the cast would have!

One more note: I may refer to the characters using he/him pronouns, however these teams can work for any interpretation of them!! All of their partners are placed in the upper right hand corner!

<<everything below this talks about the origin of my dreamtale, why Phantom (Nightmare) is the way he is, and how Nirvana (Dream) came to be)>>

Welcome To DreamSwap

As far as this au goes, everything up until the stone is more or less the same. They keep their personalities of lively young children in the beginning, with only slight changes such as Dream being a bit more mischievous and Nightmare being a little more optimistically open. He corrupts the tree accidentally, yada-yada-yada, but not to prove to the villagers that he isn’t all bad, but because he listened to his brother’s encouragement instead of falling into his fearful depression. It was hope that fueled the action instead of spite.

All while this was happening, Dream had taken some apples with him to the village as hand outs to those in need, not just the one.

By the time he got to the tree and saw what had happened, he saw the mob. They were furious, engulfed by negativity. Dream couldn’t stand the thought of something happening to his brother, so in his quick thinking he started to take bites out of every apple in his bag. What he didn’t notice was the slow corruption of them. One bad apple, the whole patch goes bad. One apple tasted of rot, but even when he spat it out there was nothing he could do.

This is how Nirvana was formed.

He was consumed by a golden sludge. His bones creaked and cracked with the internal pressure of the magic, it barely holding him together. The pain was….more than the living, or even the dead, could ever perceive to withstand.

He grew addicted. To the power. To this…sensation.

The last words exchanged are unknown by anyone aside from Nightmare.

He watched as Dream wreaked havoc amongst the population with what little wits he thought he had left.

This would be the first moment that Dream would engage in bloodlust. The thrill of getting what he wanted. What the thought he wanted..

“BROTHER, NO, PLEASE—!,” Nightmare pleaded.

His calls fell upon a deaf skull.

His brother was nowhere to be found.

There were screams. Then silence.

…”Look what you made me do,” The monster muttered.

“Aren’t you happy?”

Nightmare didn’t know how to respond. His eye lights darted around, searching desperately for a solution. His sights fell onto a lone black apple between himself and the one who stole his brother away. Quick as a whip he lunged at the fruit as Dream simultaneously took to snatch him away, and took the biggest bite he could manage.

Something bubbled in his chest as a darkness formed over him. A comforting hold. The apple had taken the primitive shape of a soul. He had become mortal. His head spiraled with voices, not of his own, he could hear the cries and pleas for help. For hope. The comforts of sadness. The community in isolation. It’s deep…it hurts. He knows. The loneliness dissipates, as he knows what he must now do. The apple is safe.

He accepts his fate.

He pulls a sword from his magic, black as obsidian with a sheen that could drive envy from a diamond. Nightmare took to defensive stance. This was a warning

Dream had watched grossly, repulsed by this…clod’s..actions. Who did he think he was? He looked over to the once beautiful tree.

“No sense in leaving this stump around, hm?”

Suddenly the tree was sliced, forever severed from the connection of the two brothers. As if there was any salvaging it to begin with…

Nightmare turned towards the creature but only to be met with a dagger in his body.

That was not to plan.

As Night turned to ash, not dust, but ash, Dream realized what he’d done. He tore through the ashes in search of the apple and had nothing to show for it.

Something inside of him squirmed. The little guardian of light had one last request.

The ashes were spread across the stump of the tree as a final goodbye.

With that, Dream fled, never to be seen again within the foreseeable future.

Everything good was lost.

And it was all Nightmare’s fault. Or, so he thinks it is.

Over the course of nearly 500 or so years, after many days and nights and through much weather, the stump began to evolve in shape. Into the shape of a somewhat familiar figure.

The 500th year came about…the figure finally hatched. The Phoenix had not risen alone, the Guardian of Magic had been keeping close eye and informed him of the incoming plans led by his former brother.

Phantom was startled. Almost unprepared.

This is how he became a True Guardian.

Can I request some comfort from delusion to reader who had a bad dream and struggle to sleep?

Delusion would listen to you talk about your bad dream, then gently pull you closer to himself, starting to rub your back lightly. He understands having nightmares; he had them almost every night himself. "It's alright, Y/n, I'm here with you." He presses a kiss against the top of your head, letting out a soft hum.

While you try to fall back to sleep, he would talk to you to distract you from the nightmare that you had, and anything else. If he has to, he would take away your negative energy. It would leave you with an empty feeling, but that is better than nothing, right?

If the Dreamswap cast had to sing a song during karaoke night what song would they sing?

(Not naming actual songs bc I don’t want my bad music tastes to become apparent)

Dream would probably refuse to sing, but would end up being roped into it by Nightmare (In a best outcome scenario) so he would probably end up, singing something completely out of character for him.

Ink would half-ass a popular pop song, so he can go sit in a corner and draw on a shitty drawing app on his phone

Blue would sing his heart out to Taylor Swift and you can’t tell me I’m wrong.

Cross would sing show tunes, something like Noel’s Lament (from Ride the Cyclone) or alternatively: he would sing something 2018 Gacha Fandom.

Nightmare would sing a country song bc he thinks it’s funny and fumble over the lyrics all while trying to do a really shitty southern accent.

Error would probably just sing a random song Nightmare asks to duet with him (He’d refuse to do another forsaken country song)
