I was talking to a friend of mine about face pareidolia, which is the phenomenon of seeing faces or facial features in inanimate objects. The subject of aspen colonies came up and he said something that will stick with me a long time: "I don't know if angles are real, but if they are, aspens are angels."
He went on to talk about how it's both beautiful and creepy that all those little notches look like eyes, and since it's all the same tree, they can see everything for miles around. You can't cut it down, you can't burn it down, if you try, you're just cutting off an eye stalk. It'll be stronger when it grows back, and because the rest of the tree saw you, it'll remember you, and it'll be angry.
I said yes, maybe the trees remember who tried to hurt them, but they'll also remember if you were kind. If you were a good person, maybe they watch over you and protect you, especially if they really are angels.
Just... something something firewatch, something something the Aspens remembered Mumbo. Something about the tree watched Grian, saw his tears, and witnessed his love.
Their love will forever be stored in that angel that is the aspen colony, and now I'm crying again.
DANGIT I SHOULD HAVE MENTIONED PAREIDOLIA AT SOME POINT IN THIS FIC
I love your interpretation of that conversation a lot. Your friend's version of it is definitely pretty creepy (great natural horror fodder), but I don't really view nature like that. Indifferent, certainly. Vengeful? Not really. But I do like the idea of the trees remembering you if you were kind :) You're connecting that to the fic in a really wonderful way, I think. I used the aspens as an analogy to single out Grian's aloneness since it was what the scene needed then, but I also like the idea of the colonies as like....a collective hug, maybe.
Aspens are cool trees. I've always thought they were beautiful whenever I saw one because they stick out so clearly from all the other trees. Their trunks with all the "eyes" are so interesting. You really do feel a little stared down by them.

I managed to get one of my Jellycat holy grails- Monty Dragon! The small one was the first... And kind of an accident; I didn't read the size correctly in the listing, but that is completely my fault and he's still very cute! So now I have siblings Catalpa (left, rainbow collar) and Aspen (right)!
[Image description: a medium and small green Jellycat Monty Dragon are laying on a blanket, facing the camera. The medium one, Catalpa, is wearing a rainbow cat collar with a bell. The small one, Aspen, has no accessories. End ID.]
