Zines. Continuing the Zine Publication workshop, I focused on refining my designs and assembling the final versions of each zines. It was exciting to see how each person’s booklet took shape, reflecting their unique interpretation of the Assemble theme.
By the end of the week, I had finished copies of my zines, showcasing creativity through a mix of collage, text, and illustrations.

Week 4 LSAD 10/10/2024. Brief 2 "Assemble"
Zine publication with Fiona
I feel like I touched on Japan a little in this work. I realized how important energy-saving technologies are and how unique it is to work with a risograph that saves energy and is eco-friendly, knowing that my creative result is part of that process. I also think there’s a small hint of Japanese minimalism in my works.

A few of my zine print outs before they were folded. I find the different papers change the mood of the zine slightly. I like how bright the colours come out on the white paper but I feel the brown-ish paper gives the story a more organic touch. I do like the yellow as well as it brings a positive mood to the zine, however it can be a bit to much, especially with the bright orange.

Tuesday 15/10 - The Finished Zine!
I'm really really happy with how this project turned out, I was a bit nervous the 2nd layer wouldn't turn out the way I had envisioned but I feel like it came out even better.
My favourites are probably the Yellow and Brown zines, I like how the warmer tones of the paper dull the blue and make the pink really pop.
Overall very happy with this work, I think I will look a lot more into the history of zines to try bring my work forward and maybe make a few more over the next couple of weeks.

Assemble Workshop - Zine Publication
Today I started the zine workshop, we got a tour of the publication station and learned about the sustainability behind the risograph.
We then were tasked woth actually making our zine so that it can go through the risograph tomorrow.
It was really great to mix in some collage with drawings or varying simplicity. The layering also allowed me to add some depth to my work.

New hobby just dropped (new hobby has been brewing for the last 3+ years)
1: 64mo blank book, aka 1/64 of a letter sized piece of paper. Total 1.5 sheets, dimensions ~1x1.5 in.
2: progress pic, the 64mo textblock. second binder clip is an attempt to make something even smaller than a 64mo
3: progress pic, the 64mo cut and folded signatures, ready to be punched and sewn
4: sticker of my bindery logo, which I designed myself :) + quarto notebook bc I made the textblock forever ago as practice, started using it as a notebook, and then figured if I was gonna use it, I should put a hard cover on it. It currently serves as my reference guide (paper size, suppliers, margins, etc).
Anyways it's so over. I'll see you in hell (WIP list)
#book shenanigans (hand binding tag)#i got tired of using fanbinding as the tag bc it's very inacurate now#ok time to hit the big fics (i've been making octavos aka 1/8 paper size. but i have some long ones on my list)#it's a lot easier if you mess up on a smaller one to redo#also i've scavenged like half my supplies from what i already has so i'm a little catious regarding barreling into a hobby wallet first#last thing: you can find me @/violoncellobindery which is where i'll keep most of this stuff. idk how i wanna divide it yet#post there rb here? post here rb there? never complete a project never post? 👀#ugh gotta work on my zine pieces. don't percieve me#what if i made multiple copies of alice in wonderland instead#as the others say this is many hobbies in a trenchcoat which is unfortunately all the hobbies i already dabble in#typography sewing reading hoarding handcrafting papercrafts etc#50% hoarding. 5% typesetting 10% printer issues 20% assembly 15% working up the courage to ask authors for binding perms#lol. i should try shutting up more.#bookbinding#book binding

ASSEMBLE zine
I started my journey into zine-making by planning my zine pages out. The inspiration for the piece was based off of old furniture catalogues and instruction manuals for furniture building. As to keep with the theme of the piece i decided then to create the piece in isometric perspective, while keeping the front and back pages to a more eyecatching graphic style. I also was basing the furniture off of my own personal taste and as so named the zine ‘Adakea’ as a portmanteau of my own name and the furniture brand. Also based on my self all of the writing in the piece is based on my own sense of humour and quips about my own taste and habits.

I started by designing my zine in a light yellow as to not be picked up by the Riso machine, and then going over it in a darker pencil colour. To create the orange accents on the final piece i used a paint marker to create graphic blocks of colour that would pop in the final piece. If i were to go back and do this project again i would use a darker colour as i am not fully satisfied with the opacity of the orange accents on the final booklets.

When put into the RISO machine The piece gave me a few test prints before the machine had fully reached the opacity it would start its finished prints at.

Update
I completed folding the zines I had to leave to dry. I’m extremely happy with how these turned out and I think zine was an extremely beneficial workshop to have taken part in and I throughly enjoyed it and will definitely use this again.
It was interesting to see how different colours can change the mood of the zine completely with yellow feeling electric and fun and blue feeling more calm but communicative.

Zines. I chose a workshop focused on zine publication, where we continued to explore the theme of Assemble. We created small booklets and brochures based on this idea, which was really engaging. Designing each page was particularly interesting, and at times, the results were completely unexpected. I enjoyed experimenting with various materials and colors, often working through collage techniques.

I also touched on the concept of assemblage, which refers to creating artwork by bringing together different, often found, objects and materials. This idea of combining seemingly unrelated pieces fits perfectly with the overall theme, emphasizing how disparate elements can be unified into a cohesive whole.

Week 4 LSAD 07/10/2024. Brief 2 "Assemble"
Zine publication with Fiona
It was fantastic workshop, I really enjoyed the process and the publication station. And now I know more about Risograph printing.
Risograph is a machine (looks like a photocopier, but!) that prints fast and in layers, with each color printed separately.
Riso printing inks give an unique texture, resulting in a hand-printed and tactile finish. The inks are soy-based and non-toxic, which means they can take longer to dry.
Risograph printing is also eco-friendly and sustainable. It uses these inks, which are better for the environment. The machine uses less energy since it doesn’t need heat to print, unlike regular printers. It’s great for printing in bulk with little waste, making it a sustainable choice for artists.
For my project I wanted to make a simple graphic story.
*Into the Dill Spirit* is a narrative that explores the life cycle of a plant, focusing on how it is born, takes shape, grows, and gathers energy. This story gives my private viewpoint on the natural process of growth and energy assembly. The use of dill as the central figure represents a common, everyday plant, making the complex process of energy transformation feel more accessible. Here I also convey the idea that dill’s inflorescences resemble a form of assembly.

Timeline update: You may have noticed my sudden burst of productivity after leaving this project on the back burner for a while XD That's because this is the gap between my summer classes and the start of the fall semester, and I have latched onto this as something to keep me occupied in the meantime. I'm glad for it, because I was starting to worry this would stretch past being a summer project—but it's looking like the zine could very well be finished this weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing the finished product with everyone :)
#zine updates#remaining to do list:#wrangle indesign into setting up the print layout for me or do it the annoying way by hand#do some test prints to see if it looks ok in both color and b&w#make adjustments as necessary#assemble a sample copy to make sure the pages are in order + to take some pictures of the physical zine#set up everything so it can be downloaded easily and make a release post#not much left :)
