Round up of my wildlife watching week 25th February-4th March 2023

It has been a week of avian splendour and spectacle. Splendour from three glorious species I added to my year list last weekend, some of my key species seen this year; a satisfying Iceland Gull sighting at Redbridge Wharf only my third ever seen, magnificent views of exquisite Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers at Acres Down in the New Forest and an unexpected and valuable first couple of Crossbills (one of each sex) of 2023 on the same morning at Acres Down. This brought me to 149 species seen this year on my earliest ever date, making it the highest a year list of mine has ever been to end a February too and I’m about a month ahead of where I was last year for seeing species currently.

The spectacle thanks mostly to the amazing times I had at my local Lakeside Country Park watching the astonishing sights of the Great Crested Grebe courtship ritual, getting incredibly lucky in the confines of my lunch hour walks at Lakeside on working from home days to see mirrored movements from the pair in contact, a bit of the iconic chest to chest and weed dance the first time I’d ever seen this and witnessing the nest building. I even saw a bit of this from a distance from a pair at Blashford Lakes yesterday too. This all allowed some brilliant photo opportunities and I was proud to be a part of this big moment in the nature calendar for many here and take some shots. That Blashford Lakes trip yesterday also produced something very notable, an emerald finch fest with the most Siskins I’d ever seen at once heard and seen well in the woods and so many Greenfinches with them as well from and before getting into the woodland hide in a great taste of winter still. This was breathtaking to be immersed in.

Lakeside Great Crested Grebes on Monday 

A strong supporting cast this week was led by the transfixing moment of seeing a Water Rail very closely on a visit to Winnall Moors on a Winchester office working day lunch break, such a beautiful bird to see. A three day run of seeing Jays very well started there and also included Lakeside on Friday and Blashford Lakes yesterday, great moments with one of my favourite birds. Another in the form of Kingfisher dominated at Blashford yesterday too with a thrilling sighting. Lesser Black-backed Gull was a good early spring patch regular enjoyed at Lakeside this week, with good moments with both Canada Geese and Greylag Geese too. Common Gull seen at Lakeside and Peregrines at Lower Test, a good week for seeing Long-tailed Tit and Wren and another two woodpeckers Green Woodpecker and Great Spotted Woodpecker seen and heard nicely this week were also great parts of the week.

The flower year took a stride into spring for me this week with the daffodils and snowdrops, species to herald the imminent change of season, continuing to really take hold with spectacular scenes of them enjoyed. But also blossom in the landscape increasingly and the pleasing sight of an early spring gem of golden colour, lesser celandine with me enjoying these at different places across the week. These are a delight to see, and alongside a fair few things flowering with gorse notable a lot this week on the way back from Winnall on Thursday I was overjoyed to see something I was hoping too soon some speedwell. All of this led to quick sightings of bee/hoverfly on sunny Thursday. 

Lesser celandine at Lakeside Country Park on Friday 

Due to the woody theme of my locations visited over the past week I also saw an increase in fungi sightings and as well as turkey tail the key one I saw was wonderful scarlet elf cup, seeing a great variety of this ruby delight of this time of year. These were powerful moments seeing one of my favourite species of fungi which I’ve had a good year for so far. As much as anything this week on the weekend and working days when out I found myself feeling positively embraced by the wild and invigorated to be outdoors in beautiful wild places.
