"I apologize. I should have informed you about... my absence."
Pain keeps pulsing through his veins, inside his head, in rhythm with a steady heartbeat; Khan is still standing, he won't budge, he won't break under whatever the Admiral is doing to him - not until he's freed his family, including Vega, and himself from that old man's grasp.
A pair of nostrils flare as Khan inhales, then exhales, slowly so, with his bright blue eyes focusing on the massive screen in front of him. This room, existing outside of their prison cells, is accessible to both of them; Similar to an observation deck on board of a starship, it offers a seating area as well as a massive screen to show off the night sky for them to look at in the late evening hours.
It's ironic, in a way - Marcus uses them to his advantage, causes pain both mentally and physically, tortures their minds and bodies... and yet he's offering them this room within what is the designated zone they're allowed to roam freely in, a place to recuperate, basically, until it's time for Khan and Vega to get locked up for the night once more.
He blinks, his head finally turning as he does to have his gaze linger on her instead now, an ocean meeting emeralds. A few seconds pass as silence stretches between them, accompanied by a throat working as Khan swallows; He can still taste copper at the back of his tongue, but his injuries are healing well.

so i've never really posted on here about him i don't think, but i dug up some art of one of my motherfuckers, korthec. he started life as a vatborn OC, then got adapted for tales of arcadia years later, and now i'm adapting him back; as a result the only art i have of him is akiridion!korthec, so while i plan to redesign him for LL-verse again, in the meantime have A He.
he is a nasty bastard who loves war crimes, murder, and cannibalism, he is husband, and i love him. thank you for your time

Odyssey Verse.
this verse follows on from the regular K/DA verse but relies heavily upon @umbane’s kayn being the reason that akali is introduced to anything beyond earth.
she is not well versed in combat, relying mostly upon her training in martial arts when she was growing up as well as what little she’s learned since leaving her life as a pop star behind. she definitely has a talent for it, but still doesn’t match anyone who has years worth of training behind them.
she has a couple of ora augments. as a cyberpunk enjoyer i am very much tearing ideas from there that would benefit her. they primarily serve as a bridge between her earthen abilities & her runeterra abilities, i.e. making up for the years of training she lacks and giving her more of an edge in combat.
augments in her arms & legs primarily focus on making her more agile, and giving her more accuracy.
the third is one that allows her to turn invisible for a short period to disengage from a fight. it works similarly to her smoke shroud, in that it has a finite area and she can still be revealed should anything touch her through it. essentially it’s a bubble of invisibility that lasts about half a minute.
at the meat of it all, she’s still an idol. people know who she is, and know that she’s affiliated with kayn. she doesn’t know anything about the politics of the universe, nor does she know of anything outside of what she’s been shown.
her ego goes from that of an A-list celebrity to someone who starts to think they’re completely untouchable. she relies on her relative safety with the empire but doesn’t really care for it at the same time. her only loyalty lies with herself and that which offers her the most in terms of giving her everything she desires. she’s spoilt.

Tumblr media
“Børa letnar, framom ventar tyngre veg,” she murmurs and it’s heavier than the crown she wears, all black tar and stark-white bone, sings it like a corrupted memory. Ought to have been sweet, at one time; perhaps the time that has passed, that has alluded her, has ripped the mirth from music as well. Gaze set in jade flickers back to @fasciinating, her enemy. Her saviour. Her Sa-te'kru.

XR Today: Why are organizations and companies consulting architects to build their Metaverse spaces?
The fundamentals of virtual spaces are similar to real-life venues, and so is the design process. Our team collaborates with experienced architects when conceptualizing new environments.
We aim to create spaces that—like theaters or arenas—feel thrilling to inhabit, comfortable, navigable, and memorable.
In the same way, you wouldn't feel a desire to return to a harshly lit office or cramped lecture hall. Virtual spaces need to weigh out architectural considerations we'd account for in real life, like human behaviour, space density, etc.
It also means attention to detail. We experience the virtual environment up close and visitors to the VR space will notice the building materials vividly. Users will still feel the details if they don't specifically note down the choices.
It is essential to consider even the smallest design decisions, from light temperature, wood grain, tiled surfaces and window views.
We wanted to position our spaces in environments worthy of the destination, from Manhattan to the Mediterranean coast, all without having to worry about the limitations of real estate.
This spatially grounded approach to real-world fundamentals while leveraging VR's ability to transcend strict physical limitations is a philosophy our team calls 'rare but real'. '.
Establishing basic familiarity and adhering to traditional design principles makes the VR space accessible even to those who have never stepped into the Metaverse. From there, we can build on the complexity and fantasy elements of the experience.
Can you give us a brief overview of some architectural requirements from previous projects?
The general comments we hear - and a standard that we hold fast to - is to make sure we create a space that feels upscale. We avoid cheap materials (like light strips and plastic finishes) or decor that can be too theatrical (like a medieval torch) in favor of thoughtful, upscale design.
Regarding specific architectural requirements, when designing a theater, for example, where the audience is concentrated on a stage or screen, we had to make some adjustments to accommodate the technology. .
VR avatars tend to distract the human eye more than real people, so the audience needs a wide and distinct view from the seats to the stage. The audience's center of attention must also be larger and more prominent than in real life.

Can you explain why the user experience is equivalent to a successful metaverse space launch?
User experience is key when introducing a new metaverse space. For many of our visitors, this will be their first time using VR, so it's essential to us that they feel supported every step of the way.
We aim to provide consistency, inclusion and emotional connection to all of our clients. We provide a space where people can have meaningful conversations with colleagues or friends.
When you enter a virtual space, you build a first impression, just like you would in real life, by observing and noting the overall aesthetic, comfort, and spectacle.
If you walk into a virtual space with other people, one of the first motivators you'll notice is comfort; users need more personal space than in real life.
Personal space preferences vary across cultures, but we've found that most people need about 50% more space in a VR environment.
Currently, a room that can accommodate 150 people in real life usually only feels comfortable for about 100 people in the metaverse. Comfort is essential to a successful space, aesthetics aside. People will not want to stay or come back if they feel uncomfortable.
Sound design is a key interactive feature to make our spaces as engaging and immersive as possible. For example, spatial audio magnifies the proximity of another avatar in a virtual location, while environmental audio, narration, and commentary all add tangibles.
VR has the advantage of infinite adaptability. We customize these spaces with a range of interactive features, from presentation rooms where employees can share 3D PowerPoint presentations to interactive whiteboards.
How do you use storytelling in your immersive worlds to increase engagement between brands and clients?
Storytelling is an important and powerful part of a successful virtual reality experience. We believe that every VR event tells a story with a beginning, middle, and end, just like a real-life event or performance.
Considerations like music, settings, themes, and storytelling make the experience as rich, engaging, and emotional as possible.
It helps provide clues based on elements of the writer, with a clear, emotional story rhythm and classic three-act structure.
For example, at the start of every event it's time to stage and showcase:
Greet your guests with original information, inspiration, and entertainment.
The second act will culminate with a speech or event, and the third act is equally important. At the end of the main event, make sure your guests are led by your hand until the very last moment, creating opportunities for small group conversations or providing instructions on how to leave the space. transparently virtual.
Overall, this approach allows participants to immerse themselves in the experience and avoid confusion.
When they leave, we want them to feel - like the experience of seeing a great performance in real life - refreshed, inspired, entertained and ready to come back.

How plausible sentence generators are changing the bullshit wars
Tumblr media
This Friday (September 8) at 10hPT/17hUK, I'm livestreaming "How To Dismantle the Internet" with Intelligence Squared.
On September 12 at 7pm, I'll be at Toronto's Another Story Bookshop with my new book The Internet Con: How to Seize the Means of Computation.
Tumblr media
In my latest Locus Magazine column, "Plausible Sentence Generators," I describe how I unwittingly came to use – and even be impressed by – an AI chatbot – and what this means for a specialized, highly salient form of writing, namely, "bullshit":
https://locusmag.com/2023/09/commentary-by-cory-doctorow-plausible-sentence-generators/
Here's what happened: I got stranded at JFK due to heavy weather and an air-traffic control tower fire that locked down every westbound flight on the east coast. The American Airlines agent told me to try going standby the next morning, and advised that if I booked a hotel and saved my taxi receipts, I would get reimbursed when I got home to LA.
But when I got home, the airline's reps told me they would absolutely not reimburse me, that this was their policy, and they didn't care that their representative had promised they'd make me whole. This was so frustrating that I decided to take the airline to small claims court: I'm no lawyer, but I know that a contract takes place when an offer is made and accepted, and so I had a contract, and AA was violating it, and stiffing me for over $400.
The problem was that I didn't know anything about filing a small claim. I've been ripped off by lots of large American businesses, but none had pissed me off enough to sue – until American broke its contract with me.
So I googled it. I found a website that gave step-by-step instructions, starting with sending a "final demand" letter to the airline's business office. They offered to help me write the letter, and so I clicked and I typed and I wrote a pretty stern legal letter.
Now, I'm not a lawyer, but I have worked for a campaigning law-firm for over 20 years, and I've spent the same amount of time writing about the sins of the rich and powerful. I've seen a lot of threats, both those received by our clients and sent to me.
I've been threatened by everyone from Gwyneth Paltrow to Ralph Lauren to the Sacklers. I've been threatened by lawyers representing the billionaire who owned NSOG roup, the notoroious cyber arms-dealer. I even got a series of vicious, baseless threats from lawyers representing LAX's private terminal.
So I know a thing or two about writing a legal threat! I gave it a good effort and then submitted the form, and got a message asking me to wait for a minute or two. A couple minutes later, the form returned a new version of my letter, expanded and augmented. Now, my letter was a little scary – but this version was bowel-looseningly terrifying.
I had unwittingly used a chatbot. The website had fed my letter to a Large Language Model, likely ChatGPT, with a prompt like, "Make this into an aggressive, bullying legal threat." The chatbot obliged.
I don't think much of LLMs. After you get past the initial party trick of getting something like, "instructions for removing a grilled-cheese sandwich from a VCR in the style of the King James Bible," the novelty wears thin:
https://www.emergentmind.com/posts/write-a-biblical-verse-in-the-style-of-the-king-james
Yes, science fiction magazines are inundated with LLM-written short stories, but the problem there isn't merely the overwhelming quantity of machine-generated stories – it's also that they suck. They're bad stories:
https://www.npr.org/2023/02/24/1159286436/ai-chatbot-chatgpt-magazine-clarkesworld-artificial-intelligence
LLMs generate naturalistic prose. This is an impressive technical feat, and the details are genuinely fascinating. This series by Ben Levinstein is a must-read peek under the hood:
https://benlevinstein.substack.com/p/how-to-think-about-large-language
But "naturalistic prose" isn't necessarily good prose. A lot of naturalistic language is awful. In particular, legal documents are fucking terrible. Lawyers affect a stilted, stylized language that is both officious and obfuscated.
The LLM I accidentally used to rewrite my legal threat transmuted my own prose into something that reads like it was written by a $600/hour paralegal working for a $1500/hour partner at a white-show law-firm. As such, it sends a signal: "The person who commissioned this letter is so angry at you that they are willing to spend $600 to get you to cough up the $400 you owe them. Moreover, they are so well-resourced that they can afford to pursue this claim beyond any rational economic basis."
Let's be clear here: these kinds of lawyer letters aren't good writing; they're a highly specific form of bad writing. The point of this letter isn't to parse the text, it's to send a signal. If the letter was well-written, it wouldn't send the right signal. For the letter to work, it has to read like it was written by someone whose prose-sense was irreparably damaged by a legal education.
Here's the thing: the fact that an LLM can manufacture this once-expensive signal for free means that the signal's meaning will shortly change, forever. Once companies realize that this kind of letter can be generated on demand, it will cease to mean, "You are dealing with a furious, vindictive rich person." It will come to mean, "You are dealing with someone who knows how to type 'generate legal threat' into a search box."
Legal threat letters are in a class of language formally called "bullshit":
https://press.princeton.edu/books/hardcover/9780691122946/on-bullshit
LLMs may not be good at generating science fiction short stories, but they're excellent at generating bullshit. For example, a university prof friend of mine admits that they and all their colleagues are now writing grad student recommendation letters by feeding a few bullet points to an LLM, which inflates them with bullshit, adding puffery to swell those bullet points into lengthy paragraphs.
Naturally, the next stage is that profs on the receiving end of these recommendation letters will ask another LLM to summarize them by reducing them to a few bullet points. This is next-level bullshit: a few easily-grasped points are turned into a florid sheet of nonsense, which is then reconverted into a few bullet-points again, though these may only be tangentially related to the original.
What comes next? The reference letter becomes a useless signal. It goes from being a thing that a prof has to really believe in you to produce, whose mere existence is thus significant, to a thing that can be produced with the click of a button, and then it signifies nothing.
We've been through this before. It used to be that sending a letter to your legislative representative meant a lot. Then, automated internet forms produced by activists like me made it far easier to send those letters and lawmakers stopped taking them so seriously. So we created automatic dialers to let you phone your lawmakers, this being another once-powerful signal. Lowering the cost of making the phone call inevitably made the phone call mean less.
Today, we are in a war over signals. The actors and writers who've trudged through the heat-dome up and down the sidewalks in front of the studios in my neighborhood are sending a very powerful signal. The fact that they're fighting to prevent their industry from being enshittified by plausible sentence generators that can produce bullshit on demand makes their fight especially important.
Chatbots are the nuclear weapons of the bullshit wars. Want to generate 2,000 words of nonsense about "the first time I ate an egg," to run overtop of an omelet recipe you're hoping to make the number one Google result? ChatGPT has you covered. Want to generate fake complaints or fake positive reviews? The Stochastic Parrot will produce 'em all day long.
As I wrote for Locus: "None of this prose is good, none of it is really socially useful, but there’s demand for it. Ironically, the more bullshit there is, the more bullshit filters there are, and this requires still more bullshit to overcome it."
Meanwhile, AA still hasn't answered my letter, and to be honest, I'm so sick of bullshit I can't be bothered to sue them anymore. I suppose that's what they were counting on.

MOON IN HOUSE AND EFFECTS PART =2
Tumblr media
As explained in the preceding issue, the Sun is regarded as the generator of power that gives spirit and life to all planets, the Moon is considered to be the conductor of power lent by Sun and rules over the lives of the beings on this earth. Sun represents individuality, whereas Moon shows one’s personality
Tumblr media
MOON IN 6 HOUSE
This house is affected by the Mercury and Ketu. The Moon in this house will be affected by the planets placed in the 2nd, 8th, 12th and 4th houses. The native will receive education with obstacles and will have to struggle a lot for reaping the benefits of his educational achievements. If the Moon is placed in the 6th, 2nd, 4th, 8th and 12th houses it is auspicious. The native would enliven a dying person by putting a few drops of water in his mouth. But if the Moon is malefic in the 6th house and Mercury is placed in the 2nd or 12th house, the native will have suicidal tendencies. Similarly, if the Moon is malefic and the Sun is placed in the 12th house, then the native or his wife or both will have severe eye defects and troubles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Moon in 7th house
The 7th house belongs to Venus and Mercury. When the Moon is placed here, the results of this house will be affected by the Venus, Mercury and Moon. Venus and Mercury combined together give the effects of the Sun. The 1st house aspects the 7th house. Consequently the rays of the Sun from the 1st house would be enlightening the Moon if placed in the 7th, which means that the things and the relatives represented by the Moon will provide highly beneficial and good results. Educational achievements will prove fruitful for earning money or wealth. He may or may not have properties but will certainly have cash money in hand always. He will have good potential for being a poet or astrologer, or else he will be characterless and will have great love for mysticism and spiritualism. The 7th Moon also denotes conflict between the native’s wife and mother, adverse effects in milk trade. Disobedience towards mother will cause overall tensions and troubles.
Tumblr media
Moon in 8th House
This house belongs to Mars and Saturn. The Moon here affects the education of the native ad- versely, but if education goes well the native’s mother’s life will be shortened and very often such a native loses both -education and the mother. However, the evil effects of the Moon in the 7th house will be mitigated if Jupiter and Saturn be placed in the 2nd house. The 7th Moon often deprives the native of his parental properties. If there is a well or pond adjacent to the parental property of the native, he will receive adverse results of the Moon all through his life.
Tumblr media
Moon in 9th House
The 9th house belongs to Jupiter, who is a great friend of the Moon. Hence the native will imbibe the traits and features of both these planets - good conduct, soft heartedness, religious bent of mind and love for virtuous acts and pilgrimage. He will live upto 75 years. A friendly planet in the 5th house will augment comforts and pleasures from the son and develops intense interest in religious deeds. A friendly planet in the 3rd house ensures great increase in money and wealth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Moon in 10th House
The 10th house is in every manner ruled by Saturn. This house is aspected by the 4th house, which is similarly ruled by Moon. Hence the Moon in the 10th house ensures a long life of about 90 years for the native. Moon and Saturn are inimical, therefore, medicines in liquid form will always prove harmful to him. The milk will act as poison if taken during night. If he is a medical practitioner, dry medicines administered by him to the patient will have a magical effect for cure. If a surgeon, he will earn great wealth and fame for surgery. If the 2nd and 4th houses are empty money and wealth will rain on him. If Saturn is placed in the 1st house, the native’s life will be destroyed by the opposite sex, especially a widow.
Tumblr media
Moon in 11th house
This house is strongly influenced by Jupiter and Saturn. Every planet placed in this house will destroy its inimical planets and the things associated with them. In this way the Moon here will destroy its enemy Ketu’s things, i.e., the sons of the native. Here the Moon will have to face the combined power of its enemies Saturn and Ketu, which will weaken the Moon. Now if Ketu is placed in the 4th house, the life of the native’s mother will be endangered. The business associated with Mercury will also prove harmful. Starting house construction or purchase of a house on Satur- days will strengthen the Saturn (the Moon’s enemy) which will prove disastrous for the native. Kanyadan after the midnight and participating in any marriage ceremony on Fridays will damage the fortunes of the native.
Tumblr media
Moon in 12th house
This house belongs to Moon’s friend Jupiter. Here the Moon will have good effects on Mars and the things associated with Mars, but it will harm its enemies Mercury and Ketu and the things associ- ated with them. Hence the business and things associated with the house in which Mars is placed will provide highly beneficial effects. Similarly, the business and things associated with the houses where Mercury and Ketu are placed will be strongly damaged. The Moon in the 12th houses causes a general fear in the native’s mind about numerous unforeseen troubles and dangers and thus de- stroys his sleep and peace of mind. Ketu in the 4th house will become weak and affect the native’s son and mother very adversely.

Fiction Podcasts: Characters Going Through It / Experiencing the Horrors
Gore warning for most, here's 15 to get you started:
I am in Eskew: (Horror) David Ward is arguably the Guy Going Through It. Stories from a man living in something that very much wants to be a city, and a private investigator who was, in her words, "hired to kill a ghost". Calmly recounted stories set to Eskew's own gentle, persistent rain. The audio quality's a bit naff but the writing is spectacular. If you like the writing, also check out The Silt Verses, which is a brilliant show by the same creators.
VAST Horizon: (Sci-Fi, Horror, Thriller/Suspense Elements) And Dr. Nolira Ek is arguably the Gal Going Through it. An agronomist wakes from cryo to discover the ship she's on is dead in the water, far from their destination, and seemingly empty, barring the ship's malfunctioning AI, and an unclear reading on the monitors. I think you'll like this one. Great sound design, amazing acting, neat worldbuilding, and plenty of awful situations.
Dining in the Void: (Horror, Sci-Fi) So, the initial pacing on this one is a little weird, but stick with it. A collection of notable people are invited to a dinner aboard a space station, and find not only are they trapped there, but they're on a timer until total station destruction: unless they can figure out who's responsible. And there's someone else aboard to run a few games, just to make things more interesting. The games are frequently torturous. If that wasn't clear.
The White Vault: (Horror) By the same creators as VAST Horizon, this one follows a group sent to a remote arctic research base to diagnose and repair a problem. Trapped inside by persistant snow and wind, they discover something very interesting below their feet. Really well made show. The going through it is more spread out but there's a lot of it happening.
Archive 81: (Horror, Weird Fiction, Mystery and Urban Fantasy Elements) A young archivist is commissioned to digitize a series of tapes containing strange housing records from the 1990s. He has an increasingly bad time. Each season is connected but a bit different, so if S1 (relatively short) doesn't catch your ear, hang in for S2. You've got isolation, degredation of relationships, dehumanisation, and a fair amount of gore. And body horror on a sympathetic character is so underdone.
The Harrowing of Minerva Damson: (Fantasy, Horror) In an alternate version of our own world with supernatural monsters and basic magic, an order of women knights dedicated to managing such problems has survived all the way to the world wars, and one of them is doing her best with what she's got in the middle of it all.
SAYER: (Horror, Sci-Fi) How would you like to be the guy going through it? A series of sophisticated AI guide you soothingly through an array of mundane and horrible tasks.
WOE.BEGONE: (Sci-Fi) I don't keep up with this one any more, but I think Mike Walters goes through enough to qualify it. Even if it's frequently his own fault. A guy gets immediately in over his head when he begins to play an augmented reality game of entirely different sort. Or, the time-travel murder game.
Janus Descending: (Sci-Fi, Horror, Tragedy) A xenobiologist and a xenoanthropologist visit a dead city on a distant world, and find something awful. You hear her logs first-to-last, and his last-to-first, which is interesting framing but also makes the whole thing more painful. The audio equivalent of having your heart pulled out and ditched at the nearest wall. Listen to the supercut.
The Blood Crow Stories: (Horror) A different story every season. S1 is aboard a doomed cruise ship set during WWII, S2 is a horror western, S3 is cyberpunk with demons, and S4 is golden age cinema with a ghostly influence.
Mabel: (Supernatural, Horror, Fantasy Elements) The caretaker of a dying woman attempts to contact her granddaughter, leaving a series of increasingly unhinged voicemails. Supernatural history transitioning to poetic fae lesbian body horror.
Jar of Rebuke: (Supernatural) An amnesiac researcher with difficulties staying dead investigates strange creatures, eats tasty food, and even makes a few friends while exploring the town they live in. A character who doesn't stay dead creates a lot of scenarios for dying in interesting ways
The Waystation: (Sci-Fi, Horror) A space station picks up an odd piece of space junk which begins to have a bizzare effect on some of the crew. The rest of it? Doesn't react so well to this spreading strangeness. Some great nailgun-related noises.
Station Blue: (Psychological Horror) A drifting man takes a job as a repair technician and maintenance guy for an antarctic research base, ahead of the staff's arrival. He recounts how he got there, as his time in the base and some bizzare details about it begin to get to him. People tend to either quite like this one or don't really get the point of it, but I found it a fascinating listen.
The Hotel: (Horror) Stories from a "Hotel" which kills people, and the strange entities that make it happen. It's better than I'm making it sound, well-made with creative deaths, great sound work, and a strange staff which suffer as much as the guests. Worth checking out.
