It's got a lot of redeeming qualities, namingly;

More ahead with technology than previous schools

Smallish, with a high student/teacher ratio (so there's less students per class than with the public schools)

Staff seem nice and understanding, have experience with both mental disasters and ex-homeschool kids

Building is new

Close to the Cambridge Red Line T-system station, so I don't have to change trains to get there

Not Ivy obsessed like other private schools in my city

Patti Yasutake has passed away.

Remembering Patti Yasutake, born September 6, 1953 and passed away August 5, 2024.

She appeared 16 times as Nurse Ogawa during the run of Star Trek: The Next Generation, as well as in Generations and First Contact.

In 1993, she also played Alyssa Ogawa in a Hallmark television commercial in North America where she is seen questioning the shipboard computer about the features of the USS Enterprise-D "Keepsake" ornament.

She started her acting career in the 1980's and was featured in episodes of T.J. Hooker (1985) and Scarecrow and Mrs. King (1985 and 1986).

In 1986 she was cast as Umeki Kazihiro in Ron Howard's drama Gung Ho.

She also played this part along with Scott Bakula, Stephen Lee, and Clint Howard in the following short lived television series Gung Ho (1986-1987).

Further television work includes episodes of Duet (1988), CBS Summer Playhouse (1988), Mr. Belvedere (1987 and 1989), Tales from the Crypt (1989), Sons and Daughters (1991), Murphy Brown (1991), Picket Fences (1992), Rhythm & Blues (1992), Murder One (1996), Living Single (1996), Dangerous Minds (1996), and Crisis Center (1997).

Throughout the 1990's, she was many times cast for television movies, often playing doctors or a nurse. Her credits include the drama Without Warning: The James Brady Story (1991), the crime drama Fatal Friendship (1991), the drama Blind Spot (1993), the action film Donato & Daughter (1993), the drama Lush Life (1993), the drama Abandoned and Deceived (1995), the drama The Road to Galveston (1996), the drama A Face to Kill for (1999), and the movie Incognito (1999).

Following her Trek connection, she had guest parts in episodes of Judging Amy (2000), HBO First Look (2000), ER (2003), She Spies (2004), Crossing Jordan (2004), Grey's Anatomy (2005), Bones (2005), Boston Legal (2006), Just Legal (2005 and 2006), The Unit (2007), Cold Case (2007), and FlashForward (2009).

More recently she played Mrs. Hong in the television drama Dad's Home (2010, with Beau Billingslea) and Judge Wilkerson in an episode of The Young and the Restless (2011).

She also reprised her part of Cathy Tao in the 2011 The Closer episode "Under Control" following her two previous guest parts in episodes in 2008 and 2009.

She made her film debut in Lesli Linka Glatter's Academy Award nomination short film Tales of Meeting and Parting in 1985.

For her next film, the 1988 drama The Wash, she received an Independent Spirit Award nomination in the category Best Supporting Female in 1989.

Further film credits include the action comedy Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot (1992), the drama Dangerous Intentions (1995), the comedy Clockwatchers (1997), the comedy Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999), the comedy The L.A. Riot Spectacular (2005), and the crime drama The Coverup (2008).

She passed away after a long battle with cancer.

The summer of 2006. I just moved out of my childhood home into one in Bumfuck, MO that my step dad built. It's a smaller ranch style version of a McMansion that he would advertise being for those with "caviar taste on a hamburger budget". No really. He planned on selling it but literally the housing market crashed soon after it was built and we had to move in . I hate, and even back then hated, the mid 2000s Tuscany look and my parents, being boomers were fucking obsessed with that trend so every inch of the walls was colored like Dijon mustard (that my step dad insisted was buttercream) . I was not allowed to have posters in my room because my mom was deathly afraid of me ruining the walls, so I developed a hobby of scrapbooking on every composition notebook I ever owned. If I wasn't in summer school waiting for the world to end on June 6th, because we were all edgy emo kids who thought 06/06/06 was the coolest day ever I was hiding in my room from my parents and my dying grandmother who would scream obscenities and outrageous claims after sundown every night before she died that August.. I really miss the internet of those days, I'd pirate the neighbors' signal and spend all day on fan forums, Myspace, Yahoo messenger, YouTube etc.

Week 06 - Summative hand-in

Rationale

For my manipulated image I was put in a bit of an awkward spot. I struggle greatly with image manipulation, and find myself struggling with 'convincing' image compositing. I also find the standard photo manipulation to be a bit boring. The act of photoshopping an object in to a space that it typically shouldn't be in feels like a bit of a novelty. It's fun in the abstract, but in practice often feels quite vapid and uninspired. I wanted to take a more interesting visual approach to this brief, injecting my own style into the photo manipulation process. I drew inspiration from both photo manipulators and designers, as my visuals take a bit of a graphic approach.

I was greatly influenced by the art genre 'Vaporwave'. While the style derived from a plunder phonics genre of music, the term is commonly associated with pink, neon and nostalgic visuals. It borrows a lot of cultural elements from the late 90's to 2000's, and often takes inspiration from Japanese graphic design from the 80's-90's (particularly with typography). I similarly wanted to explore this sort of visual style, as it allows a piece to be about a lot of things simultaneously, while still feeling grounded within a similar genre. In particular, I was inspired by the album cover of "Floral Shoppe", a significant album in the then-nascent genre of Vaporwave. The cover's use of the Helios bust, backdropped by a warm pink and skittering tiles is both eye-catching, but also unique. With these influences in mind, it’s clear that Im not exactly trying to trick viewers into believing what they see in front of them. In the case of my manipulated image, the camera always lies, and everyone is in on it. in this instance I am using photography as a tool, or a vessel for the themes and messages I want to convey. In concept, I would compare my final image with the work of Lisa Reihana, who uses digital compositions to create these visceral and stunning scenes that may suspend belief, but still pack a great deal of punch conceptually.

For my final Manipulated image I used Four photographs from our Image Bank. My piece is meant to feel dystopian, with a strange mix of modern and new. I really like the clash between the vintage phone and the pixelated and digital background. My final image serves as a criticism of nostalgia, and looking back on things with rose-tinted glasses. Forced nostalgia and the yearning for times long past is something that has become frustratingly common within popular culture. It becomes troubling when people like to look back and romanticise a time when we didn't exactly have everything sorted out. People can look back at the 60's with longing for aesthetics, but forget the constant plight of equality, civil rights and acceptance that plagued these time periods. I wanted to represent that in my work through the blood smattered face of the mannequin.

Edward Lansing Gordon III (August 17, 1960) is a television journalist known for his association with BET over four different decades. A native of Detroit, he is the son of an Olympic athlete named Ed Gordon. He was BET’s main news anchor (1988-96) and (2000-01) before hosting the interview show BET Tonight (2001-02) and another interview show, Weekly with Ed Gordon (2010-11).

He worked for NBC News (1996-2000), CBS News (2004-05), and NPR (2005-06). He hosted the syndicated talk show Our World with Black Enterprise (2006-2010).

He was born in Detroit. His father was a schoolteacher who won gold in the 1932 Summer Olympics for competing in the long jump, and his mother Jimmie was a teacher. After graduating from Cass Technical High School, he graduated from Western Michigan University with a BA in Communications and Political Science.

He considered law school, aspired to be a television journalist, and took an unpaid internship at WTVS, the PBS affiliate in Detroit. At WTVS, he worked as a production assistant (1983-85). He became the host of a local weekly talk show, Detroit Black Journal. He worked as a freelance journalist at the then-fledgling cable network BET.
