Future Story

Thank you Madam Chair and Members of the 2040 United Nations Committee on World Food Security. As a young woman I had the privilege of visiting many of the countries you represent – Peru, Ecuador, Cuba, Philippines and New Zealand. I visited your countries as an ambassador of Hawaii and as an indigenous woman who was interested in understanding the food security movement and the Rights of Mother Earth that each of you played a vital role in establishing as a model for the rest of the world.

Hawaii was once a completely self-sustaining cluster of islands – more remote than any other location in the world. Our reefs, streams and land fed over a million people. We were beyond sustainable, we were prosperous. Within 100 years after contact with western civilization, our indigenous population had been decimated by foreign disease: measles, leprosy, and polio; our language nearly extinct and with it the traditional knowledge of planting, cultivating and harvesting; and our food supply was being imported at a rate of over 90%. Studies showed that the residents and visitors on island had only at best a 3-day supply of food, should the airports and harbors ever be compromised. The introduction of processed foods and fast foods began to slowly kill our people, and new foreign diseases were introduced: diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Technology brought its own silent disease upon our people. Social media crept in and made it so easy to be connected that there was no need to put effort into gathering face-to-face. Once strong family ties eroded and once families fell apart, communities quickly followed. Email, text messaging and tweets encouraged communication to become faster and shorter – our thoughts limited by word counts. Talk story – a long held practice that fostered deep relationship and intergenerational dialogue faded and died. As a people, we became so caught up with western advances in technology, we even began to waiver in our spiritual connection and stewardship relationship to our natural resources. I’m sure the majority of the population saw no need, no connection, and no reliance on these resources, when feeding your family was easily accomplished by driving to a restaurant, or picking up groceries at the store.

In 2015, a group of young Hawaiians began to advocate for the rights of our mountain. Like many of your people, they believed our Mauna, our mountain, had the right to live and be protected just as much as any person. These Hawaiians called themselves protectors, but the media and government referred to them as protestors. They were accused of vandalism when they placed large rocks on the roadway to prevent heavy equipment from making its way to the natural area reserve where 5 acres would be bulldozed and blasted with explosives to make way for a thirty-meter telescope. As a people, we were divided by the lure of technology and the advances it promised, and the deep-seated belief that the mountain is a sacred space and originating source of water for our island.

The scientists and university professors dissuaded the majority of the people to protective action by pointing to research that showed that the water tables would not be affected by the development about to take place on the mountain. The great earthquake of the Aleutian Islands generated a tsunami so large, it completely wiped out all major sea and air ports. We no longer have the infrastructure to support shipping and importing food and goods to support our people. Our only option is to turn back to our land. We have come together as a people. We have asked our land and our ocean for forgiveness. Our tears have soaked the earth, made its way down to the water table we neglected and we are beginning to see our springs return to what the old people remember them to be.

But even still, we have forgotten how to grow food and we no longer have access to seeds that grow into plants that produce fertile seeds.
