In a whirlwind of aspirations and eclectic personalities, our hottest new reality show, "Notorious," has begun. The show's concept revolves around thrusting ten ordinary individuals into a lavish villa in Italy, where they'll vie for the spotlight and a chance at fame. With a diverse cast of characters who aspire to be recognized for various reasons, the first week of "Notorious" was nothing short of electrifying.
A CAST BREAKDOWN
After weeks of hints, we finally got to see all of our cast. Among the fascinating revelations, Ximena Ruiz stood out as the resident catfisher. Formerly a Disney Tinkerbell and online camgirl, we have high hopes for Ximena on the show.
Gideon Wessex, the local lawyer with a taste for the luxurious, lived up to his reputation as the confident rich boy. His audacious entrance, which involved shedding his shirt mid-interview, set the tone for his cocky demeanor.
Zariyah Alder wasted no time in catching everyone's attention with her bold moves. Her twerking prowess during the audition tape left an undeniable mark on the minds of both contestants and viewers alike, making her a focal point of discussions.
Veronica Stone, the Staten Island stripper with a attitude, made it clear that she wasn't there to play games. Her daring declaration of readiness to mess with anyone who crosses her path raised eyebrows and anticipation about how far she's willing to go.
Aster Andreou is our Las Vegas blackjack dealer, though he looks more like a high school senior. This young looking guy says he likes to party. We'll see about that. He's started out as our lowest ranking cast mate, but that doesn't mean much.
Ashton Chakrii, a livestock handler and financial manager, emerged as a notable figure from the start as he was listed as "Lucifer". He stuck out as having the most controversial opinions of the case. We'll see if he'll be just as controversial.
Jesse Vargas, the mysterious local janitor...or intern..or something else entirely, made everyone raise an eyebrow as people began to realize that..something doesn't add up. His ambiguous background and demeanor has us keeping our eye on him.
Mona Garcia, the beauty with brains, set herself apart as the resident PhD student. Her potential to command respect and assert herself became evident, since she's the main one to have dragged the boys for their cocky attitudes. Someone had to. Thanks, Mona!
Julian Dean Van Buren's charming sweetness was hard to ignore, especially when he gushed about his affection for his mother. As the guy who works at a local doggy daycare, he seems like the sweetest boy of the bunch.
Juliet Marki, the survivor of an alien abduction by night and hotel maid by day, evoked curiosity and amusement. Everyone seems sure that the show is going to eat her up and spit her out, we'll see.
The debut week saw the housemates cast their initial votes, with Mona Garcia rising to the top and Aster Andreou finding himself at the bottom. As the weeks unfold, these rankings will play a pivotal role in shaping alliances, rivalries, and strategies within the villa.
Fashion took center stage during the first week, with Ximena Ruiz and Zariyah Alder emerging victorious in a fashion competition that left everyone in awe. Meanwhile, Ashton Chakrii's discontent following the competition hinted at the potential for clashes ahead.
From Gideon Wessex's pizza-making fiasco to sparks of flirting and camaraderie, the first week appeared to be relatively tranquil. However, given the fiery personalities within the villa, the peace might prove to be short-lived.
Who do you think will be the most Notorious?

Welcome To Our Maldives Trip ...Amazing Stay at Soneva Fushi A lovely #family holiday & our first flight for in almost 2 yrs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40KA455DuVY Here is our first video in a series of 4 describing our wonderful family trip to the Maldives... We stayed at Soneva Fushi which is absolutely stunning and an incredible example of sustainable  luxury.
While we continue to hope and pray we all, everyone stays fine and safe and covid becomes a thing or the past, and the good parts of normal like physical school for our kids resume safely soon touch wood:), and while we are always aware that so many people have had a really difficult time in these last two years, that it still does not feel fully right to post really happy things, but the truth is, I do think sharing joy also spreads joy and hopefully indicates better times for all. So, I am sharing this post and photos and videos of our wonderful trip as it really brought our kids, who have been in over 21 months of homeschooling now, and all of us such joy and I hope it does for you too and if you are planning a trip, whether near of far, expensive or not, with family or without, a little change really helps, re energise and revive! Here goes...
It was our first flight in almost 2 years, since lockdown began, and we were so excited.

Tumblr media
We are a beach, sea and swimming loving family and had been dreaming of a trip to the Maldives for a long time, so were thrilled it worked out. Nothing could have prepared us for how beautiful it is. The blue blue blue crystal clear water, the turquoise rings around each island that one sees from the sky. We wondered if it seemed even more amazing because of the hard times all round due to the pandemic and whether, not having travelled much, except a few lovely local getaways, made this first international trip even more exciting, but truth be told, the next 5 days unfurled to prove this is a stunning place at any time. But yes, a great first trip after long lockdowns, for sure!
Tumblr media
Day 1 saw us arrive and jump straight in the sea, soon after we were introduced to our lovely barefoot butler Faali, who explained the No News, No shoes, policy, where we would be barefoot for our whole stay. After we received our negative RTPCR test results, we went for a scrumptious dinner in the wonderful company of Sonu and Eva, the founders of Soneva Fushi, and an eclectic bunch of friends. Then back to our beautiful villa on our bicycles and to a comfortable night's sleep. Watch to find out what Day 2 and beyond have in store!

Days 2 and 3
It was a little rainy on day 2 but that didn't deter us from doing lots of fun and adventurous stuff anyway. After a scrumptious breakfast of literally everything, including visits to the chocolate room and ice cream room and lots of options for Roopak who is vegan, we had a snorkelling lesson in the water sports centre pool by the super instructors, followed by snorkelling in the crystal clear blue ocean. We saw some wonderful marine life, right there by the shore.
Tumblr media
The next day being Monday, our kids did their online schooling and we then went in a boat to Hanifaru Bay, a UNESCO protected Manta Ray zone, and had an incredible experience of snorkelling with hundreds of huge manta rays. The Manta Rays were magnificent and seemed unaffected by our presence though of course we had been briefed on how to behave and not to touch or spook them.  https://www.instagram.com/p/CURg_q5lElR/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link https://www.instagram.com/p/CUXDUn-lWA9/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
Tumblr media
Fortunately a friend told us to get an underwater cover for our phones, so we were able to film these amazing underwater visuals. Wow what a day 3. Stay tuned for 4 and 5 coming up.

Day 4 - #ScubaDiving #EcoCentre #Sustainability and more..
Wearing all our fun beachwear against the stunning backdrop of the crystal clear blue sea and soft white sand of Soneva Fushi in the Madives, had me frequently doing little mini fashion shows haaha, with Roopak who is a loving but usually reluctant photographer of my mad antics, humouring me by obliging!
Tumblr media
The video begins with a montage of some of the lovely outfits I was gifted and or bought or was given to wear. We then went to the Eco Centre where Neela, the wonderful expert there explained how they recycle everything at Soneva Fushi and also all the other super work they do on conservation making Soneva Fushi a real example of walking the talk with sustainable luxury and being a truly eco friendly resort and way of life.
Tumblr media
The evening before, wonderful Bart had explained their mosquito traps and also given us details of their wonderful children’s programs at the Soneva Academy. Something we would love to try next time. We then went scuba diving. I have a Paddy one star license but as I got that a long time ago on a wonderful trip to Lakshwadeep with Lacadives, I had forgotten a lot, so our lovely instructors here, Francessca and Shian did a refresher come beginner session for us so Roopak and our kids could dive too. Wow, we all loved our diving experience. Of course wonderful meals were interspersed into the day as was chill time and online school for the kids. So all in all, another wonderful day full of new experiences.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Video 4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0XyisuvPfA
Day 4 & 5 #Watersports #Kayaking #SurfBoarding #DolphinSafari #Observatory Must admit we weren't ready to leave stunning Soneva Fushi and the gorgeous Maldives on day 4 of our trip, which is when we were meant to. So when our kids pleaded we stay a day, while initially for work and other reasons we weren't sure, when it all worked out, we were all thrilled. Especially as it was a bright, sunny day and as we had has a few rainy ones at the start, there were a few things we hadn't tried and this was the perfect way to try everything! But of course not compromising on school, so once the kids did their online classes, wi fi was good at the breakfast area too, so we were out and about, but still connected, we then went straight to the water sports centre and had a wonderful afternoon of learning to and then getting quite comfortable with kayaking and stand up paddle boarding and just relaxing and enjoying swimming in the gorgeous crystal clear blue sea.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We then showered, changed, and went on the fabulous Dolphin Safari. Wow , we saw loads of jumping dolphins. The kids were so excited as were we, and watching dolphins against the stunning setting sun with our often bickering with each other kids, being all loving to each other, made it a quiet, peaceful, calm round up of the day. Well not quite goodnight yet, as bicycles to the beautiful Out of the Blue restaurant for a delicious dinner followed by a visit, again on our cycles to the Observatory to look at Saturn and Jupiter, amazing and then a cycle ride back to our lovely villa and to a sound night's sleep.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We woke up on day 5 satisfies, the extra day had been a great surprise joy and now it felt good after a wonderful 5 day break to be heading home too. However fabulous a trip, it is lovely to be back home too. A loving welcome home by our doggie Tia, help and my Mum. The kids were full of stories to tell and all of us armed with wonderful memories and resolute to try and go back to Soneva Fushi again and often safely and successfully touch wood:)!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now it’s back to routine and we hope school opens safely soon and all the good parts of the old normal and the good parts of the new normal too touch wood:). One of the silver linings of these times I think, is valuing everything so much more than before, perhaps. Memories of this trip are etched into our hearts and we hope you all have lovely things to do and experiences, as life, after all is a culmination of all these things, and more and as a teacher said to the children, travel is such a wonderful education.
Do write in and interact. Tarataratara!!

Organizing Gravediggers, Cereal Makers and, Maybe, Amazon Employees A group of gravediggers in Columbus, Ohio, who just negotiated a 3 percent raise. The poultry plant that processes chicken nuggets for McDonald’s. The workers who make Cap’n Crunch in Iowa. The women’s shoe department at Saks Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. The Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union is not the largest labor union in the United States, but it may be one of the most eclectic. Its membership, totaling about 100,000 workers, seems to reach into every conceivable corner of the American economy, stretching from the cradle (they make Gerber baby food) to the grave (those cemetery workers in Columbus). And now it is potentially on the cusp of breaking into Amazon, one of the world’s most dominant companies, which since its founding has beaten back every attempt to organize any part of its massive work force in the United States. This month, a group of 5,800 workers at an Amazon warehouse in Bessemer, Ala., are voting whether to join the R.W.D.S.U. It is the first large-scale union vote in Amazon’s history, and a decision by the workers to organize would have implications for the labor movement across the country, especially as retail giants like Amazon and Walmart have gained power — and added workers — during the pandemic. The Amazon campaign, said Stuart Appelbaum, the union’s president, “is about the future of work and how working people are going to be treated in the new economy.” For some labor activists, the union and its early success at the Bessemer warehouse represent the vanguard of the modern organizing campaigns. It is outspoken on social issues and savvy on social media — posting a TikTok video of support from the rapper Killer Mike and tweeting an endorsement from the National Football League Players Association during the Super Bowl. “It’s a bit of an odd-duck union,” said Joshua Freeman, a professor emeritus of labor history at Queens College at the City University of New York. “They keep morphing over the years and have been very inventive in their tactics.” The union is also racially, geographically and politically diverse. Founded during a heyday of organized labor in New York City in 1937 — and perhaps best known for representing workers at Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s — most of its members are now employed in right-to-work states, across the South and rural Midwest. While the union’s overall membership has stagnated over the past decade, the number of members in its Mid-South office, which includes Alabama, Tennessee and Louisiana, has nearly doubled, to about 9,000 from 4,700 in 2011, driven by aggressive recruitment efforts in the poultry, warehouse and health care industries. More than half of its members across the country are workers of color. In the Mid-South office, which is leading the organizing at Amazon, local officials begin almost every meeting with a prayer, lean in favor of gun rights and say about half their members supported Donald J. Trump’s re-election bid. (Unlike the national union, which publicly backed President Biden, the southern office did not issue an endorsement of either candidate.) “We are known as the church union,” said Randy Hadley, president of the Mid-South Council. “We put God first, family second and then our jobs.” The retail and wholesale workers union is run nationally by Mr. Appelbaum, a Harvard Law School graduate and former Democratic Party operative from Hartford, Conn., who has written about his identity as a gay, Jewish labor leader. Since becoming union president in 1998, Mr. Appelbaum has created a niche by organizing workers from a wide variety of professions: airline caterers, employees in fast fashion stores and gardeners at a cannabis grow house. “When you buy a joint, look for the union label,” Mr. Appelbaum said jokingly. The strategy has helped the union to keep flourishing, even as its core work force in brick-and-mortar retail stores continues to shrink as shopping moves online. The union often ties its organizing campaigns to the broader struggle to advance the rights of vulnerable workers, such as the predominately gay, lesbian, trans and nonbinary employees in sex toy shops in New York and undocumented immigrants working in the city’s carwashes. After World War II, the union advocated for Black servicemen who were being shut out of jobs at Macy’s, which paid the highest commissions. “It has a history of being a militant, feisty, left-wing crowd,” Professor Freeman said. Even the Alabama office, which leans further to the right on some issues, has stood up for workers in ways that are locally unpopular. Mr. Hadley said one of his biggest accomplishments was negotiating a paid holiday on Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan, at a Tyson poultry plant in Tennessee, where a large number of Somali immigrants work. “We had Muslims in the facility, they said, ‘We look at that day like Christmas,’ and I thought, ‘Who am I to judge?’” recalled Mr. Hadley, a former meat cutter. “I said, ‘Let’s do it.’” The president of the union’s Mid-South Council, Randy Hadley, back row, center right, with other leaders and staff in Birmingham, Ala. The Mid-South office is leading the organizing at Amazon.Credit…Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union Ratified in 2008, the Muslim holiday took the place of Labor Day as one of the paid holidays that workers were allowed at the facility, and was criticized by some as being un-American. Over the years, the union has faced some powerful enemies. In the 1960s, its Black organizers were threatened — one was even shot at — while trying to sign up food industry workers across the South. Johnny Whitaker, a former dairy worker who started as a union organizer in the 1970s, said he had grown up in a white family in Hanceville, Ala., without much money. Still, he was shocked by the working conditions and racism he witnessed when he started organizing in the poultry plants years ago. Black workers were classified differently from their white counterparts and paid much less. Women were expected to engage in sexual acts with managers in exchange for more hours, he said. Many workers could not read or write. Despite threats that they would lose their jobs if they organized, thousands of poultry workers have joined the R.W.D.S.U. over the past three decades, though the industry still is predominantly nonunion. When a small group of Amazon workers contacted the union in late August about their interest in organizing the Bessemer warehouse, Mr. Whitaker acknowledged, “there was a lot of doubt” internally about the idea. The R.W.D.S.U. had tried to lay the groundwork for organizing Amazon’s warehouse in Staten Island in 2019, but the effort failed when the company pulled the plug on its plans to build a second headquarters in New York, known as HQ2, partly because of political pressure to allow organizing at its facilities. “What we learned from HQ2 was that Amazon was going to do anything it possibly could to avoid having a union at any of its workplaces,” Mr. Appelbaum said. At the time, Amazon said it canceled its plans after “a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward with the project.” But the more the workers in Alabama kept talking to the union about their working conditions, the more Mr. Appelbaum and others believed the warehouse was fertile ground for organizing. The workers described the control that Amazon exerts over their work lives, including tracking their time in the restroom or other time spent away from their primary task in the warehouse. Some workers have said they can be penalized for taking too much time away from their specific assignments. “We are talking about bathroom breaks,” said Mr. Whitaker, an executive vice president at the union. “It’s the year 2021 and workers are being penalized for taking a pee.” In an email, an Amazon spokeswoman said the company does not penalize workers for taking bathroom breaks. “Those are not our policies,” she said. “People can take bathroom breaks.” The campaign in Bessemer has created some strange political bedfellows. Mr. Biden expressed his support for the Alabama workers to vote freely in the mail-in election, which ends later this month. Republican Senator Marco Rubio of Florida went even further, encouraging the Bessemer workers to unionize in order to protect themselves against the “woke culture” at Amazon. If the union wins the election in Bessemer, the effort to court workers will continue. In a right-to-work state, workers are not required to pay union dues even if they are represented by a union. At a Quaker Oats plant in Iowa, which is also a right-to-work state, the R.W.D.S.U. finds ways to motivate workers to join the union by posting the names of workers who have not yet joined on a bulletin board. “In a right-to-work state, you are always organizing,” Mr. Hadley said. Early in the afternoon of Oct. 20, Mr. Hadley met with about 20 organizers before they headed out to the Bessemer warehouse to begin their campaign to sign up workers. The plan was for the organizers to stand at the warehouse gates talking to workers early in the morning and in the evening when their shift changes. In a pep talk with the group, Mr. Hadley invoked the story of David and Goliath. “We are going to hit David in the nose every day, twice a day,” he told the group, referring to Amazon. “He’s going to see our union every morning when he comes to work, and I want him thinking about us when he closes his eyes at night.” Source link Orbem News #Amazon #Cereal #employees #Gravediggers #Makers #organizing

Albums Turning 20 in 2020
Tumblr media
It’s hard to believe that 2000 was 20 years ago. The turn of the century brought about a lot of culturally important albums that would define where music would be heading in the new millennium. Pop artists from the late 1990s would further establish their careers in the bubblegum sphere that defined those early years of the 2000s. Bands who found their niche earlier in the previous decade would continue to reinvent themselves as musicians and songwriters for an ever-changing world. 2000 also saw the emergence of new artists and sounds that would have a major impact on what tastemakers would be listening to another decade later.
In the spirit of nostalgia, Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, is taking a look back at some of the most important albums of 2000. From one-hit-wonders to pop, hip-hop and rock’s heavy hitters, here are 10 albums from 2000 (and a few more) celebrating their 20th anniversary milestone.
1.       Radiohead, ‘Kid A’: ‘Kid A’ was a controversial album when it was first released in October of 2000, but eventually became one of, if not THE most revered of the band’s works to date. Radiohead’s fourth studio album was supposed to be a departure from the guitar-rock sound they had been known for all throughout the 1990s, instead opting for a more synth-heavy touch. Pitchfork described it at the time as “the sound of a band, and its leader, losing faith in themselves, destroying themselves, and subsequently rebuilding a perfect entity. In other words, Radiohead hated being Radiohead, but ended up with the most ideal, natural Radiohead record yet.”
2.       Coldplay, ‘Parachutes’: It may not be their biggest-seller or even the band’s favorite album of theirs, but Coldplay would not be in the position they are today without the success of debut album ‘Parachutes.’ “Yellow” was a breakthrough track for the band, first at college radio and then on a wider scale. It led to the album reaching double-platinum status and an even more revered album, ‘A Rush of Blood to the Head,’ two years later.
3.       *NSYNC, ‘No Strings Attached’: Freshly independent from the slug that was Lou Pearlman after several years of legal issues, *NSYNC were ready to show off who they really were, and ‘No Strings Attached’ was the magnum opus that did so. The hysteria that ensued after the release of first single “Bye Bye Bye” said it all for the kind of career trajectory the group and pop music in general were taking in the early 2000s. ‘No Strings Attached’ became the best selling album of the year and led to a first-week sales record that would not be broken for 15 years. Justin Timberlake became a star. The album still holds weight today, as *NSYNC mania has increased with nostalgia for the late 1990s and early 2000s coming into fashion.
4.       Britney Spears, ‘Oops…I Did It Again’: After the runaway success of Britney Spears’ 1998 debut ‘…Baby One More Time,’ the singer “did it again” with her sophomore effort, ‘Oops…I Did It Again.’ Thanks to singles “Oops…I Did It Again,” “Stronger” and “Lucky,” the album sold half-a-million copies in its first day and more than 1.3 million in its first week, a record for sales by a female artist that would also last for 15 years. The album proved that Spears had staying power past her first album, as well as the place pop would take in the musical spectrum over the decade.
5.       Linkin Park, ‘Hybrid Theory’: The debut album from “nu-metal” juggernauts Linkin Park, ‘Hybrid Theory’ introduced the world to the band’s aggressive sound and personal, emotion-fueled lyrics. “One Step Closer,” “Crawling” and “In The End” found endless rotation on MTV and radio, leading the album to sell millions of copies and going on to become the “best selling debut album of the 21st century.”
6.       Green Day, ‘Warning’: By no means their most popular (the album didn’t sell as well as any of their previous releases), ‘Warning’ brought Green Day into the new millennium with as much brash force as their 1990s fare, only with a little wiser, more eclectic touch. Songs like “Minority” and “Macys Day Parade” marked the first time the band got truly political on a record, giving rise to what would be coming from them just four years later.
7.       Dashboard Confessional, ‘The Swiss Army Romance’: The debut album from Dashboard Confessional (the solo project of Further Seems Forever’s Chris Carrabba), ‘The Swiss Army Romance’ is a necessity for anyone who claims to be into “emo.” Led by single “Screaming Infidelities” the album is full of passionate, at times self-deprecating lyrics and acoustic melodies meant to be sung along to at the top of your lungs.
8.       P!nk, ‘Can’t Take Me Home’: P!nk’s debut solo album ‘Can’t Take Me Home’ proves she’s always been a no-nonsense powerhouse pop singer, acrobatic live shows or not. “There You Go” was the big “f--- you” that most of the pop princesses weren’t doing with their music. The rest of the songs follow suit in being fiercely independent, slightly rock informed pieces.
9.       Eminem, ‘The Marshall Mathers LP’: After finding a bit of fame the previous year with ‘The Slim Shady LP,’ Eminem returned in 2000 with the even more polarizing ‘The Marshall Mathers LP.’ While the album had its humorous, tongue-in-cheek moments with songs like “The Real Slim Shady,” it also got dark and violent with songs like “Stan” (about an obsessed fan who kills himself and his pregnant girlfriend) and “Kim” (which made up a scenario where he killed his wife). Despite the album’s intense nature, it became one of his most successful, selling more than 20 million copies worldwide and going diamond in the US.
10.   Baha Men, ‘Who Let The Dogs Out’: Hard to imagine, but “Who Let The Dogs Out” (both the single and album of the same name) turns 20 this year. The song became inescapable that year, and even breaking the top ten on charts all over the world. It continues to be used during sporting events to this day (although not as heavily).
Additional Selections Turning 20:
·         Nelly, ‘Country Grammar’
·         Matchbox 20, ‘Mad Season’
·         Nelly Furtado, ‘Whoa, Nelly!’
·         Outkast, ‘Stankonia’
·         Papa Roach, ‘Infest’
·         Eve 6, ‘Horrorscope’
·         Disturbed, ‘The Sickness’
The musical landscape has changed a lot in the last 20 years. However, looking back on the popular albums of 2000 gives you a unique perspective on where certain trends came from. Reminisce with us on the albums above and let us know about your favorite albums turning 20 in the comments below.

TravelCon Update: Why You Should Be in the Room Where it Happens
Tumblr media
Posted: 4/29/2019 | April 29th, 2019
TravelCon is now only TWO months away!
This is going to the biggest travel media event of the year and the only one that focuses on all sides of the industry: traditional writing, blogging, YouTube, Instagram, and photography.
If you’ve been thinking of getting into the travel industry, don’t wait much longer as we expect to sell out again. We only have 130 tickets left and, when we sell out, that’s it.
Here’s a recap of last year’s event:
Tumblr media
So how will TravelCon help you?
Think of the millions of blogs, Instagram accounts, vlogs, and freelance writers out there.
How do you stand out among them all?
How do you become more than just another email in someone’s inbox?
By becoming a face.
What gets lost in this age of online hyper-connectedness is that old-fashioned face-to-face networking wins. When people know you personally, they are more willing to work with you. When they’ve talked to you and shared a beer with you, they WILL open your email.
Because you are no longer just another random stranger on the Internet.
You’re a cool — and REAL— person.
Someone they want to work with.
For example, last year, one of our attendees struck up a conversation with a rep from Czech Tourism — and ended up producing an ad campaign for them:
youtube
(Great video, huh?)
That’s the power of in-person events.
It allows you to talk in a way online pitching and communication can’t.
You’re only as successful as your network — and that network is strongest when it’s based on real-life connections.
And, if you’re worried you’re too much of a beginner, an attendee came last year who knew she wanted to do something in the travel industry — but she wasn’t sure what. Well, now she is running a successful tour company based on what she learned!
All within less than a year.

DualShockers’ Favorite Comforting and Relaxing Games
March 27, 2020 4:00 PM EST
From Borderlands to JRPGS to Animal Crossing, here are the relaxing games that DualShockers turns to for comfort and stress relief.
With the growing concerns over the coronavirus outbreak across the world, things are certainly stressful and uncertain right now for everyone around the world. Thankfully, video games have been able to help take us out of dark times before, and with so many countries turning to shelter in place orders and more drastic measures, gaming is certainly a welcome distraction and source of escape right now.
In light of these heavy times, the DualShockers staff gathered to share some of our favorite games that we turn to when we need them most. Consider these our “comfort food games” – the games that we like to use as outlets for relaxation, stress relief, and a bit of warmth when they’re needed.
Kris Cornelisse, Staff Writer
As odd as it sounds, my relaxation games of choice are usually some flavour of strategy title. Stellaris or Civilization 6 might have a lot going on, but once you sink the time, in they become fairly rote.
At that point, I’m just juggling resources and expanding my influence across the map. Amass my technology, build my armies, paint the planet(s) the colour of my empire…the whole thing becomes fairly cathartic. Throw in a podcast to listen to, and you have my wind down method of choice.
For something a little more short duration than those, I’ll play a round of Frostpunk or Northgard, but the same principle applies regardless.
Ricky Frech, Senior Staff Writer
When I think about my video game comfort food, there are a few nostalgia-filled games that come to mind. I could easily make this entry about something like World of Warcraft, Diablo II, NCAA Football 2014, or literally any Yakuza game. However, when I look at my YouTube history since my personal quarantine began, the answer is clear. The number of hours I’ve already spent watching The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past randomizers is kind of shocking, but it makes sense.
A Link to the Past is my favorite game of all-time. Rarely would I call a game perfect, but if any game is, it’s this one. And when the team behind the randomizer put out their first release, an incredible thing was born. I’ve played through the original ALTTP more times than I can count. It’s been in my regular rotation since my parents got me a SNES in 1994. I know that map about as well as I know the back of my hand. So, to get something that completely switches all of that up and surprises you at every turn is an absolute joy. No two runs are exactly the same and your game knowledge is often tested in ways you never expected.
Obviously, I wouldn’t recommend you play the randomizer first. If you haven’t played ALTTP‘s original version, please, do yourself a favor and do so now (and easily accessible through Nintendo Switch Online). Like, right now. But once you’ve played through the game a time or twenty, give the randomizer a try. It will not disappoint.
Cameron Hawkins, Staff Writer
While it’s not normally a game people play for relaxation, my go-to title whenever I sit down to unwind is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. I like playing competitive games, so whenever I know that I don’t have much time to play, don’t want to start a new game, or trying not to be super active in what I’m doing, I play Super Smash Bros. To me, Smash is just that type of comfort food gaming where I know I can always go to it and turn my brain off for a little. There are times where I play in a more serious fashion to try and better my skills, but normally, I like to kick back, go through a few rounds on auto-pilot, and call it a day.
All I’m waiting for now is for Sakurai to announce Sora in the new Fighters Pass. That’s all I want Sakurai. Please.
Allisa James, Senior Staff Writer
Normally some grinding sessions or mini-games in my favorite RPGs is more than enough to soothe this soul. But desperate times call for even stronger coping mechanisms, and so I turn to two games that exclude relaxation.
The first is Flower, which is a title developed by and released by Thatgamecompany in 2009 for the PS3. The player controls the wind as it blows a flower petal through the air. As you fly close to other flowers, you bloom them and attract more petals. There’s no enemies, no time limits, and the sounds and music are borderline ASMR in how peaceful and tranquil they are. Flower, with its stunning and colorful visuals that convey a subtle message of environmental conservation, is the perfect game to wind down to when the world is too much to handle (especially right now).
The second title is a game that I’ve raved about before: VA-11 HALL-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action. The aesthetic here is much different, as it takes place in a dark and grim cyberpunk future. But instead of focusing on an epic tale on class warfare, you play as an ordinary bartender that serves her eclectic customers as they pour their hearts out. The graphics are straight from a PC-98 Japanese visual novel, and it features an incredible retro soundtrack that you can fully customize. Getting to know each customers’ story while making them drinks in a fun mini-game that lets you endlessly restart bad drink mixing is a great way to wind down, and reminds you to see the everyday humanity in even the worst of situations.
Otto Kratky, Associate Staff Writer
Alright, let’s be frank. The world’s on fire right now – people are getting sick, international markets are crashing worse than Sonic ’06, and most of us have been told to stay indoors. In short, everything sucks right now, which means it’s a great time for some escapism. While most people are ditching the real world for their Animal Crossing paradises, me and my friends have opted for something a little more active, and therefore more distracting.
I’m talking about Stardew Valley, Concerned Ape’s farming simulator. Sure it’s not the most relaxing game, but it’s one that you can get into the rhythm of and suddenly hours have passed. See, in Animal Crossing, there’s hardly ever any direction: you just have your chores for the day and then you can go fishing or catch bugs – it’s pretty loose in structure like that. But in Stardew Valley you’ve got to take care of your plants and your animals, then you have to go to the mine to get iron for sprinklers, and it goes on. It’s much more active and absorbing, not to mention that with friends, you get a wonderful social experience that a bunch of us may be missing right now.
Is Stardew Valley really comfort gaming? Kind of. It’s not high-stress, and it doesn’t raise my BPM like DOOM Eternal does. But it takes me away from it all and gives me something else to focus on without stress or worry. I think that’s something all of us could use a bit of right now.
Ryan Meitzler, Features Editor
While gaming in general tends to be one of my favorite sources of relaxation when I get home, there are only a few types of games that I generally turn to time and again for stress relief or comfort. Generally, the two that I tend to come back to the most for good ol’ comfort food gaming are Super Smash Bros. Ultimate or Destiny 2. They’re super easy for me to jump into for either short play sessions or longer periods of time, and I can pretty much always find time to play them with friends to hangout and chat with them in Discord.
When I’m looking for something more single-player focused or when I’m not in a competitive mood, my comfort go-to games are either open-world games or RPGs. It’s always soothing to me to get lost in a gigantic world or to grind and level up my characters in the JRPG that I’m playing at the moment on my Switch while listening to some music or a podcast. Open-world games especially tend to just click with a certain part of my brain that loves activities and checklists, which is part of the reason why I put over 90 hours into Assassin’s Creed Origins.
In the current pandemic environment, right now I’ve been delving into Tokyo Mirage Sessions on Switch among other games, though I think I’m finally going to take the opportunity to jump into Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Persona 5 soon enough.
Laddie Simco, Associate Staff Writer
Like many others, I’ve recently found myself temporarily out of work and quarantined due to the coronavirus. In this troubling time, I’ve sought comfort through video games. Through online games like Destiny 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, I’m able to mingle with friends and still practice social distancing. Animal Crossing, the game everyone seems to be playing right now, has provided me with an opportunity to leave my state of isolation and visit a bright island that allows me to virtually go about life without the fear of a virus.
With all of this extra time, I’ve also been revisiting various games and one that has been very soothing these days is Concrete Genie. It ended up being one of my favorite games of 2019 and I’ve been meaning to wrap up the few remaining trophies I need to turn the concrete into a Platinum. This mostly entails finding certain collectibles that I missed.
Traversing Denska without a care in the world (now that I have completed the story) is often a zen-like experience. I can stop and fill an empty wall with my fantastic murals that seemingly come to life. The adorable Genies are there to lend a hand or play hide and seek or even basketball with. There’s also the VR mode that offers a free paint mode where you can add your personal touch to some of the memorable places from the game’s campaign and then feel as if you have stepped inside of your painting.
For me, Concrete Genie has been the perfect calming game to counter the craziness that is our life right now, as well as the stress of missing a jump in DOOM Eternal.
Josh Starr, Associate Staff Writer
I certainly wouldn’t describe these two games as relaxing, but they are my gaming comfort food. These games are second nature to me and provide exciting moments, while being the perfect time to chat with my friends.
The first of these is Smite. I’ve been playing Smite since its first season, and even had a brief stint in the professional scene. I’ve tried every MOBA available, but this is the one for me. Its behind-the-back, third-person camera angle is one way it drastically differentiates itself from other MOBAs, while its mythological theme gives it a more widespread appeal. Its heavy emphasis on skillshots also makes it one of the most difficult games to master in the genre.
Ultimately, Smite can be as casual or competitive as you like. There is the hardcore Conquest mode which can take tons of practice to master, while other modes like Arena are easy to approach and enjoy. It’s an awesome game to play with friends, and there will undoubtedly be playable characters you recognize. Now is a great time to give Smite a shot, as it’s free to play on PC, Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and has crossplay enabled between platforms.
My second comfort game is Borderlands; right now, that means Borderlands 3. Now Borderlands 3 received some criticism for its lackluster writing, which is completely warranted. However, Borderlands has never truly been about the story for me. It’s a wonderful zany looter-shooter that gives you the option to completely ignore the story while you run around with buddies searching for the next mind-shattering weapon.
Honestly, aside from the story, Borderlands 3 is the series’ best game in every possible way. Combat is greatly improved with thousands of new weapon options, improved special abilities, and increased movement options. Even the car combat, which was abysmal in previous titles, has been greatly improved here. Borderlands 3 promotes replayability as each subsequent playthrough increases your likelihood of finding ultra-rare weapons.
Borderlands 3 just released on Steam, and with another DLC pack being released this week, it’s the perfect time to grab some pals and drop onto Pandora’s surface. I’d go as far as saying that Borderlands 3 is the best group multiplayer shooter in recent years, even if sometimes you feel like turning down the game volume and blasting Spotify instead.
Nick Tricome, Staff Writer
I love hockey.
I watch it, play it, and depending on the need, even coach it.
I can’t do any of that right now, and probably won’t be able to for quite a while. The current circumstances; they suck. Not having that major outlet to escape them for at least a little bit makes it all feel so much worse.
Video games have had to fill that escapist void now more than they ever have, both for myself and I’m sure millions of others. And while there have been plenty of great new releases to turn to (Hey, Animal Crossing), I’ve found a lot of comfort in spending hours upon hours on NHL 20’s virtual rinks.
Now look, I buy NHL every year and would’ve spent hundreds of hours playing this season’s edition regardless. But the coronavirus pandemic has derailed nearly everything, the NHL season included, turning EA’s annual hockey franchise from a constant in my life to suddenly one of the few constants that remain.
It’s no replacement for the actual sport, it never could be. But in the meantime, taking my Be A Pro into the World of Chel’s pond hockey rinks just to mess around in Ones or drop-in Threes for a bit, or trying to create my best lineup possible through Hockey Ultimate Team, will get the job done. It kind of has to right now.
Please come back soon, Flyers

For me, there is a special kind of comfort I find in the grind of RPGs. It’s calming and relaxing to me when I can just set about fighting monster after monster, working towards a goal like learning a special skill or trying to get a rare drop. The repetitive nature of grinding in an RPG lets me go on autopilot, freeing up my mind to take a load off, work through a problem, or just disconnect if I so choose.
The RPG grind is nice because even though you are tuned out and relaxed, there is still a benefit to what you are doing. Your characters are still getting stronger, you’re still getting money, learning skills, etc. A lot of games that will help automate this process somewhat. Bravely Default, the Tales series and Final Fantasy XII for example will allow you to focus on just running around if you want, leaving most of the grunt work to the computer controlled characters.
Another nice thing about RPGs is that if you get sick of grinding for levels, more often than not there is some sort of mini-game that you can grind thrugh instead. I have spent far too much time with the likes of Triple Triad in Final Fantasy VIII or that plushie creation mini-game in Bravely Second than I care to admit. And you know what; that’s ok. I’m thrilled that there are a few big RPGs right around the corner to help me relax this next month or two!
