It has passed about 8 years since I started recording how I read books on the site "bookmeter". Looking back at the past record, I feel that I am really weird or "ill". Through these 8 years, the site tells me that I have read 1340 books by today (Indeed, I counted as they are two books if I read the same book twice). As you know, I am not Umberto Eco. So I can never reach the stage of any intellectual, or I might have to say that reading books for me is totally a waste of time. While I read books and spent my time in vain, Ryuichi Sakamoto would do the practice of moving fingers. Sorry, I hurt myself too much, but all I can say is reading is not any beautiful activity as growing up or enlightenment. It is just killing boredom, and, if I choose the paradoxical expression, "that's the goodness!" is my opinion. 

I remember Chuck Palahniuk's "Fight Club", Bret Easton Ellis's "American Psycho", and Haruki Murakami's "After dark" and think that I am "broken" (and I also want to introduce a Japanese great author Ryu Murakami). Therefore, I read so many books, listen to music a lot, and learn English. These novels by Palahniuk and Ellis tell me that "I would have to be broken if I wanted to live as a normal man". Other "broken" essences in me...masochistic, alcohol addicted, having a strong obsession, etc. For example, I always carry at least three books because they make me calm. That is really troublesome to go out of my room. Ah, this kind of topic would become "being proud of unhappiness" or "coming out world cup" so I have to stay calm, but at least, I am a freak. Probably, if we did a grand prix of bookworm in Shiso city, I would get any prize. 

The facility manager tried a lot and enabled the Wi-Fi equipment to connect to the internet again. I felt thankful for that and read Teju Cole's "Open City" with The Byrds and Buffalo Springfield's music. I could remind of the word "actual". He writes honestly and straightly as a minority writer (he is an African American) about the weird real world about racism and politics. His brave attitude of writing these things made me respect him certainly (he also writes about 911 itself and his thoughts in an extrovert way).  As I wrote before, this novel reminds me of Sebald's "Austerlitz". It would become this novel if we add the issue of human race in "Austerlitz" I guess, therefore it tastes like an intelligent and brilliant one.

A friend of mine, an ex-hikikomori person, was offered from the city because he is trying to support other hikikomori people and their family. I always respect him, so it is great news for me. I remember that once I learned about hikikomori by Tamaki Saitou's book when I just graduated from my university. At that period, I had never learned the fact that I am autistic, and I was treated as a useless person at my workplace. I also remember that I was a heavy drinker. After that, I met him and my current friends (from the meeting of autism, the "danshu" meeting, Shiso International Association)... Oh my, I am still single and living this life as a gypsy with books and music, but also I might live the wandering and wonderful life. Wandering days from here to there, I have lived with Haruki Murakami and Yoshio Kataoka's books as my bible. It is like a traveler relies on Polaris to check where they are. I live on this life with U2 and Mr. Children's new releases.

Elements Legacy Challenge

Welcome to the Elements Legacy Challenge Rules Sheet! (Wow, what a long introductory phrase!)

This challenge, as you’ll see, is heavily inspired by lilsimsie and alwayssimming’s Not So Berry Challenge (click here to read the rules). It’s evident that the format of the color coded generations & generation’s goals system wasn’t invented by me, but I wanted to make it clear anyway. I hope no one feels offended by the idea behind this challenge. I created this one out of boredom and good intentions! 💛

Basically each generation has its own color(s), material and style. Each one of these characteristics will have to be shown through your Sim’s aesthetic and/or in their house. However, if you don’t want to make a golden dressed Sim, but you’d like to give them a super tacky house, go for it! What matters is that these given characteristics are visible somewhere, even just a room or an object. The colors and materials for each gen are just a starting point, you can add whatever color or texture you like to them! Each generation has a few worlds they can live in, you can only choose among those listed for each gen.

As for money, the first gen is the only one with specified starting funds. In the following ones you can choose if you want to keep the money your family has, or if you want to start with less money to make the gameplay more challenging 😊

Then, each generation has of course some tasks and aspirations to complete, some skills to max and other stuff to do! When you play a generation, be sure to take a look at the following one as well, because sometimes there will be things that need to be taken care of before the start of the following gen!

You can play in whatever lifespan you want. It's a new challenge for me, too, so I don't know what's the best one to use.

To play some of the gens, a couple of packs are kind of necessary, like: Cats and Dogs, Seasons, Discover University, Get Famous, Eco Lifestyle, Spa Day, Realm of Magic and Jungle Adventure. Get Together, Parenthood and others are also somewhat important but you can do it without them. If anyone's interested I can do a basegame compatible version of the challenge!😊

If the challenge becomes "popular", I'll add some more generations🤩

Getting It Right

I’m not afraid of death, I just don’t want to be there when it happens

It delights me that Buddhists talk about death a lot. At my first retreat nearly two decades ago (10 days silent and solo — what was I thinking?) my teacher said on the first morning, “Let’s face it, we learn to meditate in order to prepare for death.” I blinked.

I sat cross-legged in front of her, wishing I had worn my sweater. The basement meditation room was damp and chill with B.C. coast rain. Hints of incense and mould intermingled. Sunshine glared behind Teacher, rendering her a silhouette like someone in a witness protection TV interview. I had hoped to hear something more along the lines of meditation guaranteeing tranquility and bliss. Still, I felt heartened. That rogue elephant in the room trumpeting its truths that we all try to ignore was finally being addressed. I adjusted my rosewood mala beads and straightened my spine. I was in for the long haul.

When it comes to disposing of my carcass, I would choose a sky burial. This Tibetan Buddhist tradition is considered an act of compassion towards hungry fellow creatures. Friends and family could haul my wrinkles and folds to a high point somewhere; maybe Foley Mountain near Westport or Champlain Lookout in Gatineau Park. There I would be hacked into pieces and left for critters to devour.

With luck, turkey vultures would arrive. (I simply must tell you here that a group of these birds flying is called a “kettle”. If they are sitting in trees they are a “committee”, but clustered around my corpse they would become a “wake.” Perfect.) 

For decades cremation was my plan. I wouldn’t be taking up land and my ashes could be sprinkled somewhere bucolic. But then I read mortician Caitlin Doughty’s hilarious and thoughtful memoir, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes and Other Lessons From the Crematory. I learned that after flooding a corpse with formaldehyde and rubbing alcohol, a single cremation requires enough fuel for an 800 km. car journey, and releases about 400 kg. of CO2 into the atmosphere along with vaporized mercury from teeth, toxins from prosthetics, bone cement from common surgeries, sulfur dioxide, volatile organic compounds (VOC) and more. A U.S. study states we have 219 toxins in our bodies. One of them, BPA, causes reproductive and neurological damage, and is found in 93 per cent of humans aged six and up. 

If you don’t like acknowledging elephant’s in your house, don’t read Doughty’s book. 

Meanwhile, in another favourite book, Vulture: the private life of an unloved bird, Katie Fallon tells us that the birds play an important role in the health of an ecosystem. Vultures are peaceable, harmless and helpful.

“They are perfectly adapted to cleanse, purify and renew,” says Fallon. Kind of like the Buddha’s teachings when I think of it.

Anyway, I’ve rethought the sky burial scene. Even if I could convince my family to carry me furtively to a hilltop by the misted light of a half moon, they would probably balk at hacking me up and would have to hire someone in a dark alley and at great expense. Not good.

Buddhist teachings also remind me to do no harm to any beings, including creepy-crawlies. So surely I need to consider them in my carcass disposal plan. My ancient form is already full of mercury and lead (I have the medical print outs to prove it) along with prednisone, Cipralex and 2 kinds of glaucoma eye drops which I imagine could cause gut-wrenching indigestion or death to fellow scavengers — at least if the pharmaceutical handouts of symptoms and toxicity are to be believed.
