How Automated Reporting Enhances Social Media Strategy Execution
In the ever-evolving digital landscape, automated social media reporting has become a cornerstone for businesses aiming to connect with their audience, build brand awareness, and drive conversions. However, executing a social media strategy effectively requires more than just posting engaging content. It demands consistent monitoring, analyzing performance, and adjusting tactics—all tasks that can be time-consuming without the right tools. This is where automated reporting steps in as a game-changer.
The Role of Automated Reporting in Social Media Strategy
Automated reporting leverages technology to collect, process, and present social media data in an efficient and visually digestible format. These reports offer actionable insights without the need for manual data compilation, allowing businesses to focus on decision-making and strategy refinement.
Here’s how automated social media reporting enhances the execution of your social media strategy:
1. Saves Time and Boosts Efficiency
Manually gathering data from multiple platforms—Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.—is not only tedious but also prone to human error. Automated reporting tools consolidate this data seamlessly, pulling metrics like engagement rates, impressions, clicks, and conversions into a single report.
With less time spent on data collection, social media managers can dedicate more resources to crafting impactful campaigns and engaging with their audience.
2. Provides Real-Time Insights
Social media trends shift rapidly, and timely insights are essential to stay ahead. Automated reporting tools provide real-time data, enabling businesses to track campaign performance and adjust strategies promptly. For instance, if an ad isn't performing as expected, real-time metrics allow for quick pivots to improve ROI.
3. Ensures Consistency and Accuracy
Human errors in manual reporting—like missed data points or incorrect calculations—can skew results and lead to misguided strategies. Automated systems ensure consistent and accurate data presentation, reducing the risk of flawed decision-making.
4. Customizable Reports for Stakeholders
Different stakeholders need different levels of detail. While a social media manager may require harsh insights, executives typically prefer a high-level overview. Automated reporting tools allow customization, presenting tailored dashboards that meet the needs of various stakeholders without additional work.
5. Enhances Trend Analysis and Forecasting
Long-term success in social media strategy joint on understanding past performance and predicting future trends. Automated reports often include historical data comparisons and predictive analytics, helping teams identify what works and anticipate shifts in audience behavior.
6. Improves Team Collaboration
Automated reporting fosters collaboration by centralizing data and ensuring everyone on the team has access to the same metrics. This transparency eliminates silos, encourages cross-functional teamwork, and streamlines decision-making processes.
Key Features to Look for in Automated Reporting Tools
To fully reap the benefits of automated reporting, it’s crucial to choose tools that align with your business goals. Look for features like:
Integration with Multiple Platforms: Tools should support data from all major social media platforms and other marketing channels.
Custom Dashboards: The ability to customize reports based on your team's needs.
Visualization Options: Graphs, charts, and heatmaps that make data interpretation easy.
AI-Driven Insights: Advanced tools often provide actionable recommendations based on data patterns.
Conclusion:
Automated reporting is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity for businesses looking to optimize their social media strategy. By streamlining data collection, ensuring accuracy, and providing actionable insights, automated reporting empowers teams to execute strategies more effectively, adapt quickly, and achieve measurable results.
Investing in the right tools not only simplifies reporting but also provides a competitive edge in today’s fast-paced digital marketplace. Embrace automation, and let data drive your social media success.

Using Data Studio to Create Automated Reports for Social Media Campaigns
In today’s fast-paced digital environment, effective social media reporting is crucial for optimizing campaigns and achieving measurable results. At Digital Rhetoric, a leading provider of Social Media Marketing Services in Pune, we understand the importance of tracking performance in real-time. Google Data Studio has emerged as a powerful tool for creating Automated Social Media Reporting and dashboards that provide insightful analytics to measure the impact of your campaigns effectively.
Tumblr media
Why Choose Google Data Studio for Social Media Analytics?
Google Data Studio is a free tool that simplifies Social Media Analytics by allowing marketers to create customizable reports. These reports pull data from various sources like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter, and transform it into easy-to-understand visuals. By consolidating metrics in one place, marketers can quickly interpret trends, measure performance, and make data-driven decisions to improve Social Media Marketing efforts.
One of the biggest advantages of Google Data Studio is its ability to automate data updates. With automated reporting, you can monitor performance in real-time, eliminating the need to manually gather data or create new reports each time. This feature allows marketing teams to save time and focus on implementing strategies to optimize engagement, reach, and conversion rates.
Benefits of Automated Social Media Reporting
Real-Time Insights: With automated reports, you get access to real-time data, helping you make swift adjustments to your campaigns.
Time Efficiency: By using templates and automation, Social Media Marketing Services in Pune can produce detailed reports with minimal effort.
Data Integration: Google Data Studio supports multiple data sources, allowing you to track all your platforms in one report.
Improved Decision-Making: The visuals in Google Data Studio reports simplify complex metrics, making data easier to understand and actionable.
Steps to Create an Effective Google Data Studio Social Media Dashboard
An Automated Social Media Reporting dashboard in Google Data Studio involves setting up data sources, selecting relevant metrics, and customizing the layout to focus on your key performance indicators (KPIs). Here’s a step-by-step guide:
Choose the Right Data Sources Begin by connecting Google Data Studio to the platforms you’re tracking. This may include Facebook Insights, Instagram Insights, Google Analytics, and other third-party connectors. The Data Studio library provides connectors for most major social media platforms.
Define Your Social Media KPIs Define what you want to measure. For most campaigns, KPIs may include impressions, reach, engagement rate, click-through rate, and conversions. Depending on your objectives, you might also want to track metrics like cost per click (CPC) or return on ad spend (ROAS).
Use Data Studio Report Templates for Social Media One of the great benefits of Data Studio is the availability of pre-built Data Studio Report Templates for Social Media. Templates streamline the reporting process, allowing you to set up visually appealing dashboards quickly. Customizable templates make it easy to track specific metrics and adjust the layout to highlight the most important data.
Organize and Customize Your Dashboard Structure your dashboard to show an overview first, followed by a breakdown of metrics for each platform. Visuals like line charts for growth trends, bar charts for engagement rates, and pie charts for demographic breakdowns enhance understanding and make it easy to interpret data at a glance.
Automate Report Scheduling Data Studio allows you to schedule automatic email deliveries of your reports. This feature ensures that everyone in your team or stakeholders receives up-to-date insights, even without logging into the platform. By scheduling regular updates, you can maintain Data-Driven Social Media Campaign Insights that fuel your strategy.
Key Elements for a Successful Social Media Dashboard
To create an impactful social media dashboard, here are some elements to incorporate:
Audience Demographics: Display age, gender, and location of your audience.
Engagement Metrics: Track likes, shares, comments, and overall engagement rate to measure how users interact with your content.
Traffic Sources: Analyze where your traffic is coming from (organic, paid, referral, etc.) to optimize ad spend.
Conversion Tracking: If your goal is to drive conversions, integrate conversion data to monitor lead generation or sales.
Platform-Specific Performance: Break down performance by platform to identify where your campaigns are succeeding and where they may need adjustments.
Maximizing Social Media ROI with Data-Driven Insights
The insights provided by Google Data Studio Social Media Dashboard empower marketers to maximize the return on investment (ROI) for social media campaigns. By analyzing which content resonates most with your audience, you can create more targeted strategies. This approach helps you allocate resources more efficiently and optimize ad spend across platforms.
Automated reporting also enhances transparency and accountability. By sharing visual reports with stakeholders, you can demonstrate the tangible value of social media marketing and make informed decisions on future investments.
Customizing Reports for Various Stakeholders
Data Studio makes it easy to create customized views for different stakeholders. For example, a report for a marketing director may focus on high-level metrics like overall engagement and reach, while a report for social media managers might delve into day-to-day metrics like post-performance and audience growth. Custom views make it easier to communicate insights that are relevant to each role, improving the efficiency of Social Media Marketing Services in Pune.
Staying Ahead with Data-Driven Social Media Strategies
In a competitive market, staying data-driven gives you an edge. Regularly reviewing your Social Media Analytics with Data Studio enables you to adapt quickly to changes in audience behavior and platform algorithms. Whether it’s testing new ad formats, adjusting your content strategy, or experimenting with posting times, the insights you gain from automated reports can guide your decisions.

"Deprecated Fandoms" Spam Bot Alert!
If you get a comment that says AO3 is "deleting works to conserve server space", that is a Spam Bot. There is no such thing as "deprecated fandom content", nor is there any limit on the number of works that can be posted to a fandom tag (regardless of how "popular" it is). AO3 has not changed its content policies. We are committed to upholding our founding principle of maximum inclusiveness of fanwork content, and will only remove content that violates the AO3 Terms of Service. While non-fanworks are not allowed on AO3, we consider both original works and real-person fiction to be fanworks. Please don't listen to anyone telling you otherwise.
Unlike the previous round of art spam, so far these comments have all been from guests, so our advice for handling them is different! We're working on filtering these comments out, and flagging them as spam is how you can help. Read more below the cut!
To help train our automated spam-checker to block similar guest comments in the future:
If the comment is on your own work:
Note: The "Spam" button only appears when viewing a guest comment directly on your work. This is because the AO3 comment inbox is merely a copy of the work's comments – deleting a comment from your AO3 inbox does not delete the comment from the work itself.
Go directly to the comment on your work, either by clicking on the link in your email or in your AO3 inbox.
Click on the "Spam" button to mark the guest comment as spam and remove it from your work.
That's it! You don't have to do anything else.
If you see comments like these on someone else's work:
Feel free to let the creator know the comment is from a bot and that they should mark it as spam.
You can also report the comments as botspam via the Policy Questions & Abuse Reports form linked at the bottom of every page on AO3.
If you are reporting multiple guest comments, please submit only one report and include all comment links in your report description. (You can get the direct link to any comment by clicking the "Thread" button on the comment, and then copying the URL of that page.)
AO3's Policy & Abuse committee (PAC) does not pre-screen content on AO3; they only investigate if they receive a report. All reports are reviewed by PAC volunteers, who are real human beings. You don't need to worry that your or anyone else's fanworks will be taken down due to a baseless report or a mass-reporting campaign.
If PAC were to determine that you had violated the TOS, you would receive a notification of the violation via the email address associated with your AO3 account—not via comments, social media, or any other method.

we have come to a point where i think we need to acknowledge that social media moderation as a concept is completely broken - rules are created by well meaning people for good reasons, but because of the infeasibility of human moderators actually giving each of these cases due diligence and making a decision that is widely agreed with, it’s largely just automated. it comes down to whoever hits the report button more and when. with social media as a whole being fractured into all of these individual corporate entities with no cohesive unifying operating procedures, there is probably no good solution to this other than moving away from social media platforms and focusing on smaller self-contained / community run online groups.
we’re probably already seeing this happening with the massive popularity of discord communities while social media companies flounder and shrivel up around us. as a matter of fact we have already seen this happen for most of the internet’s existence - they were called “Forums”. it’s pretty obvious that social media was only really good at facilitating the creation of these pockets of community anyways, but the nature of social media as a “platform” that must be as profitable as possible only ever forced these social clusters together in a way that drove engagement via arguments.
as hard as it is to imagine for people who grew up in a world where the default state of being online was competing for massive attention in full view of the entire public on these massive platforms, it’s probably going to be looked back on as a short-lived and failed experiment.

Brian Barrett at Wired (02.27.2025):
If you’ve felt overwhelmed by all the DOGE news, you’re not alone. You’d need too much cork board and yarn to keep track of which agencies it has occupied by now, much less what it’s doing there. Here’s a simple rubric, though, to help contextualize the DOGE updates you do have time and energy to process: It’s worse than you think. DOGE is hard to keep track of. This is by design; the only information about the group outside of its own mistake-ridden ledger of “savings” comes from media reports. So much for being “maximally transparent,” as Elon Musk has promised. The blurriness is also partly a function of the speed and breadth with which DOGE has operated. Keeping track of the destruction is like counting individual bricks scattered around a demolition site.
You may be aware, for instance, that a 19-year-old who goes by “Big Balls” online plays some role in all this. Seems bad. But you may have missed that Edward Coristine has since been installed at the nation’s top cybersecurity agency. And the State Department and the Small Business Administration. And he has a Department of Homeland Security email address and, by the way, also had a recent side gig selling AI Discord bots to Russians. See? Worse than you think. [...] Similarly, you’ve likely heard that the United States Agency for International Development has been gutted and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has been put on ice. All true, all bad. But here’s what that means in practice: Fewer people globally have access to vaccines than they did a month ago. More babies are being born with HIV/AIDS. From here on out, anyone who gets ripped off by payday loan companies—or, say, social media platforms moonlighting as payments services—has lost their most capable defender. Keep going. The thousands of so-called probationary employees DOGE has fired included a significant number of experienced workers who had just been promoted or transferred. National Science Foundation staffing cuts and proposed National Institutes of Health grant limits will combine to kneecap scientific research in the United States for a generation. Terminations at the US Department of Agriculture have sent programs designed to help farmers into disarray. On Wednesday, the Food and Drug Administration canceled a meeting that would have given guidance on this year’s flu vaccine composition. It hasn’t been rescheduled.
Don’t care about science or vaccines? The Social Security Administration is reportedly going to cut its staff in half. The Department of Housing and Urban Development is going to be cut by as much as 84 percent. Hundreds of workers who keep the power grid humming in the Pacific Northwest were fired before a scramble to rehire a few of them. The National Parks Service, the Internal Revenue Service, all hit hard. So don’t make any long-term bets on getting your checks on time, keeping your lights on, buying a home for the first time, or enjoying Yosemite. Don’t assume all the things that work now will still work tomorrow.
Speaking of which, let’s not forget that DOGE has fired people working to prevent bird flu and to safeguard the US nuclear arsenal. (The problem with throwing a chainsaw around is that you don’t make clean cuts.) The agencies in question have reportedly tried to hire those workers back. Fine. But even if they’re able to, the long-term question that hasn’t been answered yet is, Who would stay? Who would work under a regime so cocksure and incompetent that it would mistakenly fire the only handful of people who actually know how to take care of the nukes? According to a recent report from The Bulwark, that brain drain is already underway. And this is all before the real reductions in force begin, mass purges of civil servants that will soon be conducted, it seems, with an assist from DOGE-modified, automated software. The US government is about to lose decades of institutional knowledge across who knows how many agencies, including specialists that aren’t readily replaced by loyalists.
Wired has a solid article on how bad the DOGE-ificiation of government has gotten.

US Treasury Department and White House officials have repeatedly denied that technologists associated with Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) had the ability to rewrite the code of the payment system through which the vast majority of federal spending flows. WIRED reporting shows, however, that at the time these statements were made, a DOGE operative did in fact have write access. Not only that, but sources tell WIRED that at least one note was added to Treasury records indicating that he no longer had write access before senior IT staff stated it was actually rescinded.
Marko Elez, a 25-year-old DOGE technologist, was recently installed at the Treasury Department as a special government employee. One of a number of young men identified by WIRED who have little to no government experience but are currently associated with DOGE, Elez previously worked for SpaceX, Musk’s space company, and X, Musk’s social media company. Elez resigned Thursday after The Wall Street Journal inquired about his connections to “a deleted social-media account that advocated for racism and eugenics.”
As WIRED has reported, Elez was granted privileges including the ability to not just read but write code on two of the most sensitive systems in the US government: the Payment Automation Manager (PAM) and Secure Payment System (SPS) at the Bureau of the Fiscal Service (BFS), an agency that according to Treasury records paid out $5.45 trillion in fiscal year 2024. Reporting from Talking Points Memo confirmed that Treasury employees were concerned that Elez had already made “extensive changes” to code within the Treasury system. The payments processed by BFS include federal tax returns, Social Security benefits, Supplemental Security Income benefits, and veteran’s pay.
Over the last week, the nuts and bolts of DOGE’s access to the Treasury has been at the center of an escalating crisis.
On January 31, David Lebryk, the most senior career civil servant in the Treasury, announced he would retire; he had been placed on administrative leave after refusing to give Musk’s DOGE team access to the federal payment system. The next morning, sources tell WIRED, Elez was granted read and write access to PAM and SPS.
On February 3, Politico reported that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Republican lawmakers in the House Financial Services Committee that Musk and DOGE didn’t have control over key Treasury systems. The same day, The New York Times reported that Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, said that DOGE’s access was “read-only.”
The significance of this is that the ability to alter the code on these systems would in theory give a DOGE technologist—and, by extension, Musk, President Donald Trump, or other actors—the capability to, among other things, illegally cut off Congressionally authorized payments to specific individuals or entities. (CNN reported on Thursday that Musk associates had demanded that Treasury pause authorized payments to USAID, precipitating Lebryk’s resignation.)
On February 4, WIRED reported that Elez did, in fact, have admin access to PAM and SPS. Talking Points Memo reported later that day that Elez had “made extensive changes to the code base for these critical payment systems.” In a letter that same day that did not mention Musk or DOGE, Treasury official Jonathan Blum wrote to Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon, “Currently, Treasury staff members working with Tom Krause, a Treasury employee, will have read-only to the coded data of the Fiscal Service’s payment systems.” (Krause is the top DOGE operative at Treasury and CEO of Cloud Software Group.) The letter did not say what kind of access the staff members actually had.
Sources tell WIRED that by afternoon of the next day, February 5, Elez’s access had been changed to “read-only” from both read and code-writing privileges.
That same day, a federal judge granted an order to temporarily restrict DOGE staffers from accessing and changing Treasury payment system information, following a lawsuit alleging the Treasury Department provided “Elon Musk or other individuals associated with DOGE” with access to the payment systems, and that this access violated federal privacy laws. The order specifically provided a carve-out for two individuals: Krause and Elez. At a court hearing later that day, Department of Justice lawyer Bradley Humphreys asserted that the order said their access would be “read-only.”
“It’s a distinction without a difference,” a source told WIRED. Referring specifically to the PAM, through which $4.7 trillion flowed in fiscal year 2024, they said Elez should not have had “access to this almost $5 trillion payment flow, even if it’s ‘read-only.’ None of this should be happening.”
The Treasury Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Elez did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The White House and Musk did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
“People will be held accountable for the crimes they’re committing in this coup attempt,” Wyden tells WIRED. “I’m not letting up on my investigation of what these Musk hatchet men are up to.”

A new study by researchers at Zhejiang University has highlighted the disproportionate health challenges faced by sexual and gender-diverse (SGD) individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic. By analyzing over 471 million tweets using advanced natural language processing (NLP) techniques, the study reveals that SGD individuals were more likely to discuss concerns related to social connections, mask-wearing, and experienced higher rates of COVID-19 symptoms and mental health issues than non-SGD individuals. The study has been published in the journal Health Data Science.
The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed and intensified health disparities, particularly for vulnerable populations like the sexual and gender-diverse (SGD) community. Unlike traditional health data sources, social media provides a more dynamic and real-time reflection of public concerns and experiences. Zhiyun Zhang, a Ph.D. student at Zhejiang University, and Jie Yang, Assistant Professor at the same institution, led a study that analyzed large-scale Twitter data to understand the unique challenges faced by SGD individuals during the pandemic.
To address this, the research team used NLP methods such as Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) models for topic modeling and advanced sentiment analysis to evaluate the discussions and concerns of SGD Twitter users compared to non-SGD users. This approach allowed the researchers to explore three primary questions: the predominant topics discussed by SGD users, their concerns about COVID-19 precautions, and the severity of their symptoms and mental health challenges.
The findings reveal significant differences between the two groups. SGD users were more frequently involved in discussions about "friends and family" (20.5% vs. 13.1%) and "wearing masks" (10.1% vs. 8.3%). They also expressed higher levels of positive sentiment toward vaccines such as Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Johnson & Johnson. The study found that SGD individuals reported significantly higher frequencies of both physical and mental health symptoms compared to non-SGD users, underscoring their heightened vulnerability during the pandemic.
"Our large-scale social media analysis highlights the concerns and health challenges of SGD users. The topic analysis showed that SGD users were more frequently involved in discussions about 'friends and family' and 'wearing masks' than non-SGD users. SGD users also expressed a higher level of positive sentiment in tweets about vaccines," said Zhiyun Zhang, the lead researcher. "These insights emphasize the importance of targeted public health interventions for SGD communities."
The study demonstrates the potential of using social media data to monitor and understand public health concerns, especially for marginalized communities like SGD individuals. The results suggest the need for more tailored public health strategies to address the unique challenges faced by SGD communities during pandemics.
Moving forward, the research team aims to develop an automated pipeline to continuously monitor the health of targeted populations, offering data-driven insights to support more comprehensive public health services.

Tumblr media
Well, looks like it’s time for another round of spambot Whack-a-mole. Every so often I’ll get absolutely inundated with spambot follows, and this week seems to be serving up a fresh batch. Today it was only about 75 (I get 2-3 of the above emails every day when it's really bad). The past few days it's been over 100 every 24 hours.
And yes, I go through the effort to report and block every single one. First of all, the last time I messaged Tumblr about this they said that this was the best way to help them, since it lets them know what profiles to check out. Moreover, I want to have an accurate idea of how many followers I have, and this is the only social media profile I have that gets such onslaughts of fake profiles. So I painstakingly go through and delete them every day—even on a quiet week there are usually at least a few. (I really wish Tumblr staff could figure out a UI that allows bulk blocking, instead of having to click on each one individually.)
A few observations under the cut:
--I’ve gotten to the point where if the username is a string of nonsense words, there’s no profile pic, and the tagline is “untitled” in one language or another, it gets instantly blocked. I am trying to be really careful to not just go on autopilot and block every single new follow without paying attention, because I am getting actual people following me in the midst of this spambot storm. I’ve probably blocked a few actual profiles from newbies or people who just never got around to customizing their profile, but I’m not going to click through to every one of several hundred profiles over a matter of days.
--Even if there’s a PFP, if the tagline is still untitled or if they have one recently posted/reblogged post that doesn’t say anything about them, and if they’re missing a bio, that’s a block. (If they have only one post but it’s from five years ago, I let it slide, because I doubt any bot is going to commit to the bit that long and it’s more likely someone who remembered that they actually have a Tumblr.)
--If someone went through the trouble to put together a custom blog theme, they’re probably not a bot.
--Profiles that are obviously pr0nbots/spammers/AI? Also blocked. (This week’s themes seem to be real estate scammers and automated reposters of spammy medical/science YouTube videos. One time a while back it was cannabis and psilocybin dealers, probably because a post I made about culinary mushroom foraging went mildly viral.) Sometimes a profile will have the PFP and banner and a bunch of posts, but they’re all advertising something, with no self posts, random reblogs, or other posts to suggest an actual human being with varied interests.
--I hate that I’ve had to block so many pr0nbots that my first inclination on seeing a PFP that is a conventionally attractive young female-presenting person in a cute outfit is to just block them because most of the time I’m going to click through to their blog and it’s going to be photos and/or videos of their naked, variably bouncy fleshy bits everywhere, but I have to remember that there are also still people who are conventionally attractive who just want to share cute photos of their outfits with no intent of also taking pictures without said outfits. (And sometimes blogs full of nekkid people are just curated by actual humans who enjoy pictures of nekkid people.)
--While some of the usernames are random strings of words and sometimes numbers, other times I think Tumblr may be recycling the usernames of deleted accounts, because they seem like the kind of thing a Tumblr user would come up with circa 2014.
--I have to wonder how many people who claim to have however many thousand or million followers on whatever social media platform have their numbers inflated with terrifying numbers of bots, and it’s now made me kinda skeptical of high follower counts, not just here but on other platforms. Like are all 807,168 of your followers actual people? Your social media follower count has become increasingly important in getting things like book contracts, music deals, etc., but no one ever asks whether you cull the obvious fake profiles.
--Oddly enough, the spambots who leave spammy comments in replies to my posts rarely ever follow me. They still get blocked.
--Sometimes there are so many spambots that I end up having to use the actual real people profiles mixed in as milestones along my path of mass-annihilation-via-report-and-block. Like “Oh, wait, I remember that name, they followed me in between yesterday’s Spambot #89 and Spambot #90. I must be at the end of the most recent bot-salvo.”
--I probably missed a few bots who managed to slip through the above filters and convinced me they were real people. But hey, I'll take a few over thousands cumulatively over my tenure on Tumblr.

This is a summary of how court cases go. Partly inspired from posts about recent events that show me just how much the general public doesn't know about what happens after arrest and before prison (or acquittal).
Warning: Much of this is specific to my state. Not even just my country: my state! I've tried here and there to mention other ways things are done, but I have almost ten years of experience in this one and approximately zero in any other.
Part 1: How Cases Begin/"Investigation"
One question seems to come up a lot in true crime cases. That question is: why are the police so bad at this? Why didn't they canvass the scene? Why didn't they get witnesses? Why didn't they (insert incredibly basic investigative step here)?
Sorry to bust your bubble, but police rarely do any actual investigating. Cases most commonly begin in the following ways.
1: Case directly reported to police. There are several different types of this. The most common two are via 911 call and via citizen report (i.e., coming into the police station to report a crime). However, in recent years, we've seen the rise of automated reporting of certain crimes via social media companies, most famously with regards to child sex abuse material. The police will simply get a report that x IP address accessed/shared/downloaded Y image at Z time.
2: Traffic stop. The police saw a car committing a minor traffic violation (ran a red light, headlights out, failed to come to a complete stop at a stop sign, changed lanes without signalling, etc.) and they stopped it. They found a pretext or got "permission" to search the car from the driver (who likely did not really know they could refuse). Or they got a drug dog to run around the car. (Drug dogs are not nearly as accurate as people think they are; overwhelmingly drug dogs respond to the signals of their handler and not the presence of drugs. I can cite studies if requested.)
3: Narcotics investigation. This is a distant third, but worth mentioning because it's probably the most proactive that most police departments get on a regular basis. They will have undercover officers or informants do controlled buys of narcotics on video, meticulously documented before and after. They take a level of care with this type of investigation otherwise only really reserved for the most violent felonies.
This all isn't to say that cases can't come up any other way. Sometimes police departments really do just do long-term investigations of things. Mostly, I find, they spend so much time picking the low-hanging fruit (guy who had drugs on traffic stop, yelling drunk homeless person) that the more complex and complicated cases just get dropped.
What happens next?
Next, the police are supposed to investigate. Gather evidence? Talk to people?
This is going to be disappointing to many people as well, but police tend to do the absolute minimum necessary investigation to establish the case and get a conviction, then pass it over to the prosecution. This is even if there are leads and suspects they haven't cleared. They'll just leave that kind of thing out of the final report, unless the defense comes specifically nosing around.
Let me give a few specific examples.
Example 1: 911 call for assault and battery. Officers arrive to find that two brothers absolutely beat the ever-loving shit out of each other at grandma's funeral. Brother 2 has left. Brother 1 remains. The police talk to Brother 1, who has a broken nose. Brother 1 fully blames the aggression on Brother 2, claiming that Brother 2 attacked him unprovoked and broke his nose. Brother 2's wife backs him up. The police, having gotten two witnesses saying one version of events, bring a malicious wounding charge without ever having spoken to Brother 1. A different officer serves Brother 1's arrest warrant and does not interrogate him in any way.
This is not unusual. Once the officers have found enough to arrest one person, often the last thing they want to do is generate more work for themselves by then finding a reason the case isn't so simple and easy. That would mean they then have to talk to many more people, examine evidence, and make a decision as to who the "primary aggressor" was, which will require a judgment call. Meanwhile, their extra investigation has just made it easier for the defense to win at a trial later on, because now the defense has loads of helpful info. They helped the “bad guys” by doing their job better. Can y’all see why an officer wouldn’t even bother? Would just go on to the next easy case instead of staying late and tracking down another witness?
In my past assault and battery cases, it has been just about as common for officers to have spoken to both parties as it was for officers to have only spoken to one party.
Example 2: Reported Property Damage. Girlfriend walks into a police station and says "my boyfriend broke my phone." (In my jurisdiction, a person can just walk straight in front of a judge, swear that what they said was true, and the judge will issue an arrest warrant. This is not true in all jurisdictions and is in fact completely fucking buck wild.) Police ask her a couple questions, look at the phone, bring a warrant, it's done. Maybe they call the boyfriend and ask him what happened. This is most likely the extent of the investigation.
You notice both of these are incredibly low-effort cases that result in easy arrests and immediate prosecutions. Wow, could that help an officer’s statistics? Could it actually hurt his stats if he takes longer and does a better job?
Okay, what happens now? The police have a suspect, they (in theory) know what happened.
Next, police seek an arrest warrant.
This involves going before a judge and swearing that there's probable cause to believe that their suspect committed their crime as alleged.
1: The Affidavit. There are very few rules for what they can and can't say in these affidavits to get their search warrants. Police officers can attest/swear to things that other police officers saw, because of "imputed knowledge." They can quote witnesses. They can decline to identify informants, as long as they say that their informant has a history of being reliable. (They do not have to provide any evidence of that history.)
They don't have to include all the facts. They don't have to include facts that contradict their version of events. They're not supposed to lie, but sometimes these affidavits are not provided to defense counsel and are sealed, so the defense can't even find out later what they said. And they can shop around for judges who are the most friendly. If one judge says "no," they can try another.
On top of that, all they have to show is "probable cause." Nobody is willing to put a percentage likelihood on "probable cause," but places tend to agree to things like: if there are four guys in a car and you find drugs where all four could reach it, you have probable cause for all four. It's not that you probably did it. It's more than a suspicion that you did it. In my experience, "probable cause" means that there's literally any reason to believe that this person might have actually done this thing.
2: No-Knock Warrants. The media has made a big deal these days of no-knock warrants and nighttime "warrant service." These are when the police bust into someone's house without announcing themselves, at night, in order to take everyone by surprise. This is horrendously dangerous! And yet, police seem to crave it. They get really, really mad when anyone tries to take it away.
My jurisdiction banned arrest warrants after dark, but didn't do the same for search warrants. Guess when all search warrants seem to get served? Goddamn midnight, that's when.
Furthermore, police seem to be able to request exceptions to the no-knock, daytime only rules. Recently, I saw a case where that exception was granted for the following reason: "drugs can be consumed or sold with great speed so might not be there in the morning." Okay, cool, if that's a good enough reason to dispense with the knock-in-the-daytime requirement for one case, that means that literally every other drug case qualifies for dispensing with that requirement too.
3: When to serve the warrant? After business hours on a Friday, obviously. That means that the person they arrest will be in holding over the whole weekend before getting to see a judge on Monday. That's like forty-eight extra hours of jail time, in which they won't have a lawyer, for police to visit them and try and pressure them into confessing, or just intimidate them into feeling like shit.
4: What happens when warrant is served? The suspect is arrested in whatever they were wearing, sometimes allowed to grab phone and wallet but sometimes not for reasons I can't even attempt to explain, they are driven to the jail, and they are processed in. They then wait until they can see a judicial officer to hear about the question of bond. But that's the subject of the next post!
See tomorrow for information on bail, bond, pretrial supervision, counsel at first appearance, and why it all matters. Edit: Bail and pretrial post here.

Must be able to tolerate spreadsheets, accept mission-based metaphors, and be hotter than his temper.
@MidnightRescueThots:
What if I accidentally fell into danger so accidentally Scott Tracy would have to rescue me and accidentally carry me bridal style?
@BluerThanScott:
Sorry, but we don’t need sense when there’s Scott Tracy jawline appreciation hour
I am reconsidering the wisdom of EOS collating these summaries 😳
I have no idea why people are wasting their time talking about my forehead or my jawline but I really must interrupt to say:
PLEASE DO NOT PUT YOURSELVES IN DANGER OR FAKE RESCUE SITUATIONS.
This will not endear any of us to you, and doing so could mean we are unavailable for a genuine disaster.
However this man does endorse the suggestion to let the man rest.
