Burrow's End is an absolute masterpiece.

In the span of ten episodes Aabria and Co. weave an exciting and emotional adventure story about a family of sentient stoats. It delivers huge laughs, interesting societal criticism, remarkably emotional and well-acted scenes and concludes with a series of epilogue scenes that feel appropriate for each character, some heartfelt and subdued and others bigger than life and all the funnier for it.

Siobhan and Izzy play the perfect pair of siblings. They fight and argue but they also love each other. Jaysohn (Siobhan) looks up to Lila (Izzy) and believes she's the smartest stoat in the world (and by the end she probably is) and Lila hypes up her little brother's athletic skills. They both fully embodied these kids and I could watch them do fun stuff for more episodes. Give me a version of Saved by the Bell with them. Stoat by the Bell.

Brennan and Rashawn, playing sisters, also knock it outta the park, showing a more mature sibling dynamic. Brennan portrays Tula as the quintessential overtired single mother of excitable kids, and Rashawn as younger sister Viola straddles a very interesting line of being intimidating to outsiders but very much more naive and looking to her older sister when she starts a family.

Jasper as Thorn, a guy everyone just lets be a cult leader because he really wanted to, is fantastic. His is a difficult role as the only non-blood relative. Jasper plays Thorn with such real humanity of a guy in over his head and letting his ambition wife call the shots, but also one who agrees with her goal, really loves her and has moments of real menace. He has some very funny scenes, his big speech is perfect, and I just enjoy him.

Erika is wonderful. They play the epitome of generational trauma as many have said but as much trauma as Ava has, she is also loving and willing to learn. The fact Erika took this adversarial role is incredible. The tense dramatic scene primarily between Ava, Tula and Viola is amazing. They act their asses off and make hard choices that I imagine are difficult even for such an experienced player.

Aabria's DMing always feels fun. She doesn't get bogged down in the rules. She knows them. She plays by them. But as a master, she knows how and when to break them too. Her seasons on Dimension 20 have all had a tenseness, a particular edge to them that can give me anxiety during dramatic scenes between two characters. It always feel like one of her NPCs may say something devastating and the tension between characters reaches really thrilling heights. This is present in other seasons, but I don't think anyone does it as well as she does. The first season of hers to have battle maps, Aabria really swung for the fences and gave us some of the wildest maps to date.

Shout out to Carlos Luna's voice acting. He did an incredible job. And shout out to the whole crew who have put together one of the best seasons of D20. They keep finding ways to build on what's come before and they should be commended for it.

Dimension 20 is most successful when the concept is very streamlined. They don't do huge 100 episode campaigns capable of handling huge winding complex narrative, but short focused D&D stories, which is why many of the Side Quests have been so fantastic. They embody this philosophy most clearly, but it's apparent in the most beloved Intrepid Heroes seasons as well—John Hughes/High Fantasy, Game of Thrones/Candyland, Retrofuturism, Film Noir but in a Brain... Burrow's End fits this perfectly. It's streamlined concept paired with great storytellers and great chemistry sets it up to be a smash hit before it begins. And goddamn does it deliver.

Stick figure headcanon!!

Aight. Sooo, what if stick figures (excluding the hollow heads) change color as they grow older? Cause in the few parts in AvA where u get to see stick city, all the sticks are duller colors. And then the CG plus Purple are all brighter, cause they’re kids!

So my theory is that when a stick figure is born, they are born with very bright colors. Like, they all look kind of the same. You’ve got blue, green, red, etc. but as they grow older, let’s say 5 years old, their color begins to change, becoming more unique. Let’s say a blue baby turns into a sapphire color! (It’s very rare for a stick to stay an original color, like Blue, Red, Yellow, and Green, but it is possible) Then as they continue to age, their colors grow duller and duller. Then, once they’ve grown old and are close to death, they become a very pale version of their original color, or just grey all together.

Also, if they ever become very sick, they may start to lose their colors.

And scars. Large scars are literally grey patches on their skin. Like most of Blue’s lower half is grey, due to the burn scars.

I also have a random headcanon that RGYB weren’t actually generated onto the stickfight website, but they were actually abducted at a very young age and they would’ve had a normal family and life at one point. But we’ll save that for another time.

Also I have yet ANOTHER headcanon that the hollowheads are ageless cause they were created by humans. Kinda immortal I guess? They can die if something or someone kills or deletes them, but they can’t die of old age. Technically, Second could live forever if nothing kills him.

Aabria is so good at what she does! Episode 6 has a lot, but what has struck me is the parallels between our stoat family and Last Bast.

Viola and Thorn were literal cult leaders who believed that Thorn could harness the power of the blue as a means of protection and also social power. When they first arrived at Last Bast they both said "someone did it! Someone did what we wanted to do, but bigger!"

So far, Last Bast's approach to "trouble makers" is subtle threat, almost passive aggressiveness. The Population Support do not outright attack, they inform you that you are being tracked and watched, and there is only the implication for some kind of threat. Ava and Tula operate in similar ways when trying to enact control both in their former burrow and also within the family. They rarely outright attack, but instead use passive aggressive language and behaviors to get others to comply with what they want.

It is important to note that Lila and Jaysohn both buck under the structure of their previous burrow, the familial systems, and the control of Last Bast. They are expected to fall in line, but for various reasons either cannot or choose not to. However the expectation of the family and Last Bast is the same: eventually they will "mature" into compliance.

There is a reading of these parallels that Last Bast is just a larger, more formalized version of the unhealthy power dynamics already at play within this family: hubris, fear, greed, and passive aggressive manipulation. And what's worse, is that Last Bast is also an "Animal Farm"-esque recreation of human power structures and dynamics.

But Aabria said early on that she is going save this stoat family, and I think that she's right. Our stoat family is not motivated by the selfishness of the First Ones (they are using the thousands of stoats as a meat shield, no question) and already we see the needed changes to their family dynamic necessary for their survival. Because, without a confrontation with Last Bast, our stoat family would have been doomed to simply recreate it on a smaller scale in some other burrow, and I think Aabria's story suggests that would not lead to generational thriving but rather generational oppression and control.

My version of Yellow became a scared baby for 3 weeks after AvA 5 and followed Blue around like a puppy because she was scared after watching him get killed by the Dark Lord. She would also not be able to fall asleep in her room and would sleep with Blue for comfort.
