The Cruise (1970) directed by Marek Piwowski - A stowaway sneaks aboard a ship departing on a cruise down the Vistula River. The captain takes him for a Communist Party cultural coordinator and the intruder gladly adapts to his new role, immediately setting to work at manipulating the passengers and crew into silly and vaguely humiliating games. [x]
I'm aware that if you aren't familiar with poland's culture and history this might come off as woefully unfunny, however while the humour might not be universal, the absurd of it all certainly is.
Coffee and Cigarettes (2003) directed by Jim Jarmusch - The film is composed of a comic series of short vignettes shot in black and white built on one another to create a cumulative effect, as the characters discuss things such as caffeine popsicles, Paris in the 1920s, and the use of nicotine as an insecticide – all while sitting around drinking coffee and smoking [x]
"Now that we've quit, we can have one." That's it. That quote is all you need to know about this film.
Casting JonBenet (2017) directed by Kitty Green - Twenty years after the modern world’s most notorious child murder, the legacy of the crime and its impact are explored. [x]
I’m including it mostly because life very literally replaces logic in this one.
A Ghost Story (2017) directed by David Lowery - Recently deceased, a white-sheeted ghost returns to his suburban home to console his bereft wife, only to find that in his spectral state he has become unstuck in time, forced to watch passively as the life he knew and the woman he loves slowly slip away. [x]
It’s pretty and 92 minutes long, which is a perfect length for a film and that should be reason enough for you to watch it.
also the score is wonderful.
Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) directed by Jim Jarmusch - A depressed musician reunites with his lover in the desolate streets of Detroit. Though their romance has endured several centuries, it is tested by the arrival of her capricious and unpredictable younger sister. [x]
the only other title that shows up when you type ‘only lovers’ into letterboxd is “Only Lovers Leave to Die” and I find that hilarious and very on brand for this film.
Annette (2021) directed by Leos Carax - The story of Henry, a stand-up comedian with a fierce sense of humor and Ann, a singer of international renown. In the spotlight, they are the perfect couple, healthy, happy, and glamourous. The birth of their first child, Annette, a mysterious girl with an exceptional destiny, will change their lives. [x]
what a wonderful fever dream this film is
Nomadland (2020) directed by Chloé Zhao - A woman in her sixties embarks on a journey through the Western United States after losing everything in the Great Recession, living as a van-dwelling modern-day nomad. [x]
this one made me fight really hard to not lose my ‘I don’t cry in public’ badge
‘I didn’t want my sailboat to be in the driveway when I died. So yeah. And it’s not. My sailboat’s out here in the desert.’
The Nest (2020) directed by Sean Durkin - Rory is an ambitious entrepreneur who brings his American wife and kids to his native country, England, to explore new business opportunities. After abandoning the sanctuary of their safe American suburban surroundings, the family is plunged into the despair of an archaic ’80s Britain and their unaffordable new life in an English manor house threatens to destroy the family. [x]
100% convinced it was the horse’s ghost that was responsible for all that tension
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019) directed by Marielle Heller - An award-winning cynical journalist, Lloyd Vogel, begrudgingly accepts an assignment to write an Esquire profile piece on the beloved television icon Fred Rogers. After his encounter with Rogers, Vogel’s perspective on life is transformed. [x]
it's been two years and I'm still as confused and conflicted about this film as I was the night I watched this
Corpus Christi (2019) directed by Jan Komasa - A pious 20-year-old juvenile delinquent is sent to work at a sawmill in a small town; on arrival, he dresses up as a priest and accidentally takes over the local parish. [x]
After watching this I spent an unhealthy amount of time trying to figure out how the same person who created Suicide Room could make something this good. turns out he didn't write this one. mystery solved.
The Farewell (2019) directed by Lulu Wang - A headstrong Chinese-American woman returns to China when her beloved grandmother is given a terminal diagnosis. Billi struggles with her family’s decision to keep grandma in the dark about her own illness as they all stage an impromptu wedding to see grandma one last time. [x]
some people laugh during this one and some cry and all of them are right to do so
Shoplifters (2018) directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda - After one of their shoplifting sessions, Osamu and his son come across a little girl in the freezing cold. At first reluctant to shelter the girl, Osamu’s wife agrees to take care of her after learning of the hardships she faces. Although the family is poor, barely making enough money to survive through petty crime, they seem to live happily together until an unforeseen incident reveals hidden secrets, testing the bonds that unite them.
watched this one sitting on the floor right in front of the screen with someone's knee in my back, it was awful and I would do it again for this film

Turkey signals sweeping regional ambitions
Tumblr media
By James M. Dorsey
A nationalist Turkish television station with close ties to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has dug up a 12-year-old map that projects Turkey’s sphere of influence in 2050 as stretching from South-eastern Europe on the northern coast of the Mediterranean and Libya on its southern shore across North Africa, the Gulf and the Levant into the Caucasus and Central Asia.
Buoyed by last year’s Azerbaijani defeat of Armenia, TGRT, a subsidiary of Ihlas Holding, a media and construction conglomerate that has won major government tenders, used the map to advance a policy that has long constituted the agenda of some of Mr. Erdogan’s closest advisors.
The broadcasting of the map, first published in a book authored by George Freidman, the founder of Stratfor, an influential American corporate intelligence group, followed calls by pan-Turkic daily Turkiye, Ihlas’ daily newspaper that has the fourth-largest circulation in Turkey, to leverage the Azerbaijani victory to create a military alliance of Turkic states.
In a country that ranks only second to China as the world’s foremost jailer of journalists, Ihlas Holding media would not be pushing a pan-Turkic, Islam-laced Turkish regional policy without tacit government approval at the very least.
The media group’s push reflects Turkish efforts to capitalize on the fact that Turkey’s latest geopolitical triumph with Azerbaijan’s Turkish-backed victory is already producing tangible results. The military victory has positioned Azerbaijan, and by extension Turkey, as an alternative transportation route westwards that would allow Central Asian nations to bypass corridors dominated by either Russia or Iran.
Turkmenistan, recognizing the changing geopolitical map, rushed in January to end a long-standing dispute with Azerbaijan and agree on the joint exploitation of Caspian Sea oil deposits. The agreement came on the heels of a deal in December for the purchase from ENI Turkmenistan of up to 40,000 tonnes of petroleum a month by the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR).
The agreement could boost the completion of a Trans-Caspian natural gas pipeline (TPC) that would feed into the recently operational Southern Gas Corridor (SGC), bypass Russia and Iran, and supply Greece and Bulgaria via the former Soviet republic.
Last month, Azerbaijan agreed with Turkmenistan and Afghanistan to develop the Lapis Lazuli transport corridor that would link the war-ravaged country to Turkey. At about the same time, Kazakhstan began exporting copper cathodes to Turkey via Azerbaijan in a first step intended to capitalize on the Caucasian nation’s position as a transit hub.
Azerbaijan and Turkey’s newly found advantage has rung alarm bells among Russian and Iranian analysts with close ties to their respective governments even though the TGRT broadcast may have been primarily intended to whip up nationalist fervour at home and test regional responses.
Russian and Iranian politicians and analysts appeared to take the broadcast in that vein. Nonetheless, they were quick to note that Friedman’s projection includes Russia’s soft underbelly in the northern Caucasus as well as Crimea while Iranians took stock of the fact that the Turkish sphere of influence would border on Iran to the north, south and west.
Turkey and Ukraine have in recent months agreed to cooperate in the development of technologies with military applications related to engines, avionics, drones, anti-ship and cruise missiles, radar and surveillance systems, robotics, space, and satellites. Turkey has refused to recognize Russia’s annexation of Crimea, home to Crimean Tartars, and criticized Russian support for Ukrainian rebels.
Most Russian commentators sought to downplay the significance of the map, leaving Andrei Krasov, deputy chairman of the defence committee of the Russian parliament’s lower house to warn that “if they (the Turks) want to test the strength of the Russian spirit and our weapons, let them try.”
With Iran excluded from TGRT and Stratfor’s projection of Turkey’s emerging sphere of influence, Iranian officials and analysts have largely not responded to the revival of the map.
Yet, Iran’s actions on the ground suggest that the Islamic republic has long anticipated Turkish moves even though it was caught off guard by last year’s Azerbaijani-Armenian war.
For one, Iran has in the past year sought to bolster its military presence in the Caspian Sea and forge close naval ties with the basin’s other littoral states - Russia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan.
Viewed from Tehran, TGRT’s broadcasting of the Stratfor map was the latest in a series of provocative Turkish moves.
They include Mr. Erdogan’s recital of a nationalist poem while attending a military parade in Azerbaijan that calls for reuniting two Iranian ethnic Azeri provinces with the former Soviet republic and publication by state-run Turkish Radio and Television’s Arabic service of a map on Instagram, depicting Iran’s oil-rich province of Khuzestan with its large population of ethnic Arabs as separate from Iran.
The Instagram posting came days after the disclosure that Habib Chaab, a leader of the Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahvaz, or ASMLA, had been kidnapped in Istanbul by an Iraqi Kurdish drug baron in cooperation with Iranian intelligence and transported to Iran. Mr. Chaab had been lured to Istanbul in October from his exile in Sweden.
While senior Iranian officials talked down the Turkish provocations, Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency left little doubt about what Iran’s true sentiments were.
“Those who have greedy eyes on the territories this side of the Aras River had better study history and see that Azerbaijan, specifically the people of Tabriz, have always pioneered in defending Iran. If Iran had not helped you on the night of the coup, you would have had a fate like that of former Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi,’ protesters chanted in front of the Turkish consulate in Tabriz, the capital of Iran’s East Azerbaijan province.
The protesters were responding to Mr. Erdogan’s poem recital and referring to the failed military coup against him in 2016 as well as the toppling of Mr. Morsi in 2013 in a takeover by the Egyptian armed forces.

Thursday Thoughts: The Best Walt Disney World Rides
Since I work at Walt Disney World, people often ask me what my favorite ride is. The thing is, I can’t pick one favorite, because I like different kinds of rides for different reasons!
So instead of attempting to rank them all in order to pick one favorite, I’m going to hold my own little theme park awards ceremony. I’ve divided the current forty-nine Walt Disney World rides into nine categories – now let’s see which rides win!
Tumblr media
Best In-Park Transportation
This first category is an often-overlooked type of Disney Park attraction. While most rides drop you off right back where you started at their completion, these rides serve a purpose as in-park transportation. The Magic Kingdom has multiple rides like this, including the horse-drawn carriages on Main Street and the rafts to Tom Sawyer Island. Disney’s Animal Kingdom also has the Wildlife Express train, which gives its passengers glimpses of the animal barns on their way to and from Rafiki’s Planet Watch.
Tumblr media
Call me a sucker for nostalgia, but for me, the best in-park transportation is the iconic Walt Disney World Railroad. This classic ride takes you on a scenic tour around the Magic Kingdom, with stops in Frontierland, Fantasyland, and Main Street. U.S.A. The four locomotives that travel this route are actual narrow-gauge steam trains, originally built in the early 1900s and restored for use today. Though at the time of writing the railroad is temporarily not operating, the train is still at the station for photo ops, and I eagerly await its return.
Best Carousel
When I say the word “carousel,” an image of wooden horses prancing in a circle likely comes to mind – like the Prince Charming Regal Carousel in the Magic Kingdom. But Walt Disney World features a much wider range of spinning attractions, from aerial carousels like Fantasyland’s Magic Carpets of Aladdin, Tomorrowland’s AstroOrbiter, and DinoLand U.S.A.’s TriceraTop Spin. I even consider high-speed spinners like the classic Mad Tea Party and the new Alien Swirling Saucers as a more thrilling type of carousel. For a moment I considered being clever and naming the Carousel of Progress show as my favorite carousel.
Tumblr media
However, I must give Dumbo the Flying Elephant the honor of best carousel ride. It’s the Goldilocks of aerial carousels – not too high and not too low, not too skinny and not too wide, not too fast and not too slow. When I visited the Magic Kingdom as a child, flying with my mother on Dumbo was the perfect thrill and delight. Today, I find it a wonderfully relaxing flight, and so I still make a point of visiting Dumbo whenever I pass through Fantasyland.
Best Dark Ride
“Dark rides” are indoor attractions which carry you along a track and – in true Disney fashion – through a story. Whether you climb aboard a clamshell at Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid, hop into a honey pot at the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, or drive a Doom Buggy through the Haunted Mansion, you will encounter beloved characters and classic songs that you will never get out of your head. The Magic Kingdom isn’t the only park with dark rides – Epcot ferries you through time, the big blue ocean, and a quirky science lab via Spaceship Earth, The Seas with Nemo and Friends, and Journey Into Imagination respectively.
Tumblr media
A star among these cherished attractions is Peter Pan’s Flight. The original version of this ride took its first guests to Never Land on Disneyland’s opening day, and it’s been a guest favorite ever since. Even though there are now five versions of this attraction around the world, and so many newer attractions competing for guests’ attention, it’s still nigh-on impossible to get a Fastpass for the one in Walt Disney World, and for good reason! The journey is chock-full of details for Peter Pan fans to discover, and it employs many simple tricks to bring the magic to life even for adults. The moment when your ship lifts off of the railing and takes to the sky gives me chills every time!
Best Game Ride
As I said at the start, I like different rides for different reasons. Therefore, I am taking two “dark rides” and setting them apart in their own category. Rather than carry you passively through a story, these “game rides” challenge you to take part in the adventure, hitting targets in a video-game-like setting. The classic example of a game ride is Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin in Tomorrowland, in which you work to defeat the Evil Emperor Zurg.
Tumblr media
But the game ride I much prefer is Toy Story Mania at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Perhaps it’s unfair to compare two rides with vastly different technological platforms, but I find the gameplay of Midway Mania much easier to learn than Space Ranger Spin’s, making it a less frustrating and more engaging time for someone like me who does not have a lot of experience with video games. For the more serious gamer, this ride also offers many opportunities to strategize with your copilot and rack up the big points! Not to mention that the breakneck speed and the catchy tunes always put a smile on my face.
Best Slow-Moving Boat Ride
Many Walt Disney World attractions involve stepping onto a boat and taking a trip down a gentle river. From the musical Gran Fiesta Tour and “it’s a small world,” to the educational Living with the Land, to the hilarious Jungle Cruise, these rides are a great option for anyone searching for an experience without a height requirement. If you want a little excitement with your boat rides, Pirates of the Caribbean and Frozen Ever After both throw a dark drop into the middle of the otherwise peaceful journey.
Tumblr media
For some people, that thrill would put a ride at the top – but when I get on a Disney boat, I’m looking for relaxation. That’s why Na’vi River Journey is the best slow-moving boat ride in all of Walt Disney World. This calm voyage completely immerses you in the breathtaking bioluminescent rainforest of Pandora, complete with up-close encounters with the flora, fauna, and Na’vi who live there. If I could ride it around and around all day, I would!
Best Car Ride
While putting rides into categories, I came across a few which didn’t seem to fit into the other categories well. Then I realized that these attractions all take you for a ride on a car! The Tomorrowland Speedway lets you steer your own two-seat racecar, Epcot’s Test Track lets you design a vehicle and put it through testing, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s Dinosaur takes you on a bumpy trip through the late Cretaceous, pursued by both carnivores and meteors.
Tumblr media
My favorite Walt Disney World cars are the trucks at Kilimanjaro Safaris. This open-air guided tour through the African savanna lets you see and learn about the thirty-four species that live there. You come away with incredible pictures and a call to action to help protect the creatures with whom we share this planet! Best of all, every single journey on Kilimanjaro Safaris is unique – the animals call the shots, after all!
Best Drop Ride
Let’s now move into the realm of thrills! This first thrill-ride category is a small one, for those rides which are not a roller coaster but nonetheless feature a drop that will make you scream! Some of these drop rides are also water rides, like Splash Mountain in the Magic Kingdom and Kali River Rapids at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
Tumblr media
I much prefer the objectively best example of a drop ride – the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror! This spooky Hollywood Studios ride looms over Sunset Boulevard, daring you to enter. Now, historically, I am not a fan of scary rides. I was incredibly surprised to discover that I absolutely love Tower of Terror! The adrenaline rush makes me scream with delight more than fright as I fall faster than the speed of gravity. This attraction has something in common with Kilimanjaro Safaris as well, in that no two rides are the same! Will you go up first, or down? How many times will you rise before you fall for good? It’s impossible to know until you step aboard!
Best Roller Coaster
If you’re looking for a thrill, you can’t beat a roller coaster. Disney’s roller coasters beat the average amusement park coaster with their devotion to story and theming alongside the adrenaline rush! There’s a coaster for everyone, whether you prefer the rocky ride of Big Thunder Mountain or the smooth-swinging carts of Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, the eerie void of Space Mountain or the colors and lights of Slinky Dog Dash, the easy pace of Barnstormer or the zero-to-sixty loop-de-loop rush of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster.
Tumblr media
Though many new coasters have arisen over the years, my favorite remains Expedition Everest: Legend of the Forbidden Mountain. It’s my top example of how Disney tells a story entirely through your surroundings, starting in the queue and continuing all the way through the ride itself, as you first prepare for your voyage, next are warned about the legend of the Yeti, and finally come face to face with the creature. For the thrill-lover, it has multiple drops, including one that sends you backwards in total darkness!
Best Simulator
Simulators are experiential rides that use a combination of video screens and g-forces to bring the high-flying adventure to life all around you. And like I said at the start of this article, I love them all for different reasons. When I’m in the mood for a relaxing glide, I let Soarin’ carry me around the world. Other times, I’m in the mood for the realistic gravitational pull of Mission: SPACE as I live out my childhood dreams of being an astronaut. I’ve ridden Star Tours: The Adventure Continues countless times to get the different combinations of heroes, villains, and planets.
Tumblr media
But I have to pick one to call the best, and that one is AVATAR: Flight of Passage. Once again the moon of Pandora hits you with full immersion as you ride on the back of a banshee. This ride is like all my daydreams of flying brought to life. It’s a gorgeous experience in every detail, from the wide, sweeping landscapes you soar above, to the subtle sensation of the banshee breathing between your legs. There’s a reason it’s still such a high-demand attraction two whole years after it opened! The first time I rode it, I ran outside with a huge grin on my face, already eager to get back in line.
Are there any great attractions you love that I forgot? What categories would you use to rate your favorite attractions? Is there truly one greatest Disney World attraction of them all? Reply, reblog, retweet, or comment with your thoughts!
All images in this article are from the Walt Disney World website.

🌍 Why to choose #Paphos for your next holiday 🌞? It’s no surprise that the coastal city of Paphos is one of the most popular places to visit on a holiday to Cyprus 🇨🇾. The birthplace of Aphrodite and a gentle hustle and bustle that can be sped up or slowed down, this thriving destination is a blissful mixture of Blue Flag beaches, delectable restaurants, exciting attractions and historical sites with the prestigious UNESCO stamp of approval, making it teasingly diverse and suitable for travelers of every kind. 🌍
🌟 Prices from £300pp* (All Inclusive options from £460pp). Prices will vary according to your details and preferences
Any destinations in #Europe and beyond are available. Please ask
👉 1. Blue Lagoon: Described as the most beautiful place on Cyprus 🇨🇾, the Blue Lagoon is arguably the best and most unforgettable attraction. The isolated lagoon is tucked into the rugged coastline of Akamas National Park, on a peninsula between Paphos and Latchi therefore easily accessible by boat from either destination. The boat drops the anchor in the lagoon so visitors can swim in the warmest, clearest, most azure waters they’ve ever seen.
👉 2. Tombs of the Kings: Is a remarkable world-famous attraction that simply can’t be missed on a holiday to Paphos. This UNESCO World Heritage Site overlooks the sea and dates back to the era of Alexander the Great and was used for burials of aristocrats and statesmen.
👉 3. Kato Paphos Archaeological Park: Another UNESCO World Heritage Site in Paphos that will stand strong in your holiday memories is the Kato Paphos Archaeological Park. Here is where you can admire sites and monuments from 4 BC through to the Middle Ages and the Roman period, evident from the intricate mosaic floors of the Roman villas which depict various scenes from Greek mythology. The seaside location is the icing on the cake, as well as the fields of wild flowers that are perfect for stopping for a picnic under the sunshine.
👉 4. Baths of Aphrodite: Although there are plenty of places to take a scenic stroll in Paphos, nothing quite compares to the Baths of Aphrodite. Engulfed by a majestic history and fascinating legend, this shady pool on the Akamas Peninsular just outside of Paphos is said to be the location where the Goddess of Love went to bathe and is rumoured to make a woman grow younger. The pool is covered from the sunshine by an ancient fig tree while the verdant foliage and twisted branches give the whole area a mythical feel that’s shrouded in magic and complemented perfectly by the gentle sounds of the surrounding wildlife.
👉 5. EDRO III shipwreck: Those with a passion for photography can’t miss out on the EDRO III Shipwreck. Located directly on the shore just a few miles from Peyia and the Sea Caves, this 83-metre-long cargo ship looks like an abandoned garden on first glance but once you get up close and personal, you’ll be face to face with a fascinating piece of recent history.
👉 6. Tsangarides Winery: The gorgeous Paphos countryside lends itself exceptionally well for verdant vineyards, not to mention that the Cypriot wine industry dates back nearly 5,000 years. The award-winning Tsangarides Winery is one of the biggest and most key wineries in Paphos, coupling Cypriot traditions with a youthful energy to produce red, white, rosé and organic wines that are truly distinctive and full of body and character.
👉 7. Paphos Aphrodite Water Park: For both the very young and the young at heart! Paphos Aphrodite Water Park is the perfect family day out and the biggest water park in the region, so boredom certainly isn’t on the agenda. Think high-speed water slides, a wave surge pool, a lazy river that stretches as far as the eye can see, a splash area for kids, plenty of swimming areas and so much more. Thrill seekers will adore the likes of Kamikaze, Gravity and Aqua Infinity which provide an adrenaline rush like no other.
👉 8. Troodos Mountains: Are a sight to behold. Set within the stunning 35-square-mile Troodos National Park and considered the beating green heart of Cyprus, these lush valleys, spectacular vineyards and verdant forests are worth every second of the 90-minute travel time from the centre of Paphos. The mountains themselves are the largest range on the island, dominated by the 6,400-foot-high Mount Olympus which is four times higher than Ben Nevis. Expect criss-crossing hiking and walking trails that vary in terrain but also plenty of cycling routes for mountain bikers, perfect for admiring the rivers and waterfalls that are scattered throughout the range on the way to the summit of Mount Olympus.
👉 9. Paphos Old Town: Everywhere you turn in the Paphos’ city centre you’ll find an abundance of historic charm that will send tingles down your spine. In 2017, the Old Town received funding to restore its public spaces and historic buildings but its authentic charisma still stands – expect to still find the maze of winding streets, quaint boutiques and family-run restaurants where dining al fresco for a spot of people watching is a must. Uniquely, the town has two separate geographical locations that were developed in different periods of time; Kato Paphos and Pano Paphos.
👉 10. Coral Bay: A beach day in Cyprus is a given but there’s nothing quite like whiling away the hours at Coral Bay on a holiday in Paphos. This Instagram-worthy Blue Flag Beach is famed for its soft white sands and crystal-clear waters, making it a popular spot for locals and tourists alike.
