Detective Weaver/Belle French, Explicit

Summary: A Woven Beauty Law & Order-ish AU. Written for Writer’s Month 2019.

Chapter Summary: Belle gets contemplative about her future with Weaver.

Notes: For my August Writer's Month prompt #6: Is that my shirt? This is a bit of filler that only vaguely progresses the plot, but it's necessary to setup Belle's frame of mind for what's to come. Also an excuse to write more flirty idiots because how could I not with that prompt?

The next day, Belle was still riding high on the revelation that Charlie Dunn, the second victim, was also adopted from Nevada.

She woke up early, and was already working and on her second cup of coffee when Weaver finally rolled out of bed around seven. Whatever had been causing her headaches and weird stomach issues, seemed to have left as suddenly as it came, which reinforced her belief that it was a mild bug from something she ate.

It was essential that they obtain the rest of the birth records on the victims as well as the Tremaines’ foster children. She spent most of the morning filling out request forms for the Clark County Clerk’s Office, one for each victim, one for Eloise, and one for her husband. They probably hated her by now, but if things panned out the way she thought they would, she would buy the whole office lunch on her. Her afternoon consisted of making inquiries locally for whatever birth records were available on the other victims. That had yielded little so far, aside from confirming that three more had been born out of state.

Weaver pushed the office door open, and Belle looked up from her laptop.

“We found Eloise Tremaine’s apartment,” he announced, walking over to the desk as he took off his leather jacket.

Belle’s eyebrows lifted. “Where? How?”

He set down a piece of scrap paper with an address on it in Detective Rogers’ handwriting. “Here, and it really helps once you know the victim’s actual name, and the name of the company that actually pays for the apartment.”

She frowned. “What company?”

Weaver dropped down into one of the chairs opposite her. “Robert Tremaine’s. Perrault Developments, Inc.” Belle’s frown deepened, and he continued, “which he inherited from his uncle, James Perrault.”

“Why do I know that name?” she asked, leaning back in her chair.

“I’m told it’s the name of the French guy who wrote Cinderella.”

Her face went through several expressions before she shook her head. “I’m surprised that you know that.”

He laughed. “I don’t. Rogers’s Googled the name and half the results were for Charles Perrault.”

Her lips curled. “So you two fell down a Wikipedia rabbit hole on your way to finding our victim’s residence?”

“Something like that.” He stretched a bit and rolled his shoulders, no doubt stiff from a whole day of driving around the city. “Anyway, the apartment was in the name of the company, and it never came up in any of our inquiries for missing renters, because the rent was still being paid.”

Belle leaned forward and rested her arms on the desk. “By a dead woman?”

“By an offshore account.”

“Of course.” She sighed. “Well, that explains why we couldn’t find any credit history on Eloise if she’s been living off the company money, and paying everything in cash or with the company account.

“Yeah,” he agreed. “We’ve got enough now to get all the information we want on Tremaine’s business. Maybe there’s some other connections to our victims from that.”

She picked up the paper with the address and did a quick search to see what part of the city it was in while he was talking. “Do we have access to the apartment yet?”

“Rogers is working on it. The landlord has already been notified, but he’s being a stickler for having the warrant before he lets us in.”

“Good for him, I guess.” Belle sighed again, and then pushed back from the desk. “I filled all the requests with Clark County, and found almost nothing locally for birth records. Damon, Chelsea, and Melissa, were all born out of state, but I don’t know where yet.”

“That’s something, though,” he said, trying to be encouraging. He knew how much she hated the tedium of paperwork and formal requests. “By next week we should have all of the records back, if not sooner. And tomorrow we get to see how Eloise Gardener lived.”

“I want to go with you.” She met his eyes with a stern look to let him know she was serious and would not be left back at the office while he and Rogers rooted through Eloise’s apartment. “I want to be there.”

He nodded in understanding. “Should have the warrant before lunch.” Then he smiled. “I think that’s enough for now. Ready to call it a day?”

She smiled back, already bending down to pull out her purse. “Yes please.”

He stood and lifted his jacket from the back of the chair. “I was thinking I’d make alfredo tonight.”

Pausing with her purse strap hanging awkwardly from her hand and one arm in her coat, Belle looked at him wide eyed, starting to smile. “That’s my favorite.”

Weaver licked his lips. “I know.”

Belle sighed and closed her eyes as her head fell forward, letting the hot water run down over her neck and shoulders.

It wasn’t an exaggeration to say she loved this shower. The bathroom had been a huge selling point when they first looked at the apartment, though that seemed like a lifetime ago. It had been too easy to settle back into a routine with Weaver, and while there had certainly been solace in the familiar, especially in the aftermath of being attacked in her own home, there was still apprehension. The conversation over the state of their relationship had never really taken place, and both of them seemed loath to rock the boat while so much was happening with the case, but she had been exploring her thoughts on the matter more and more.

Her session with Dr. Hopper had touched on it as well, and Archie had openly asked her if she wanted to reconcile officially with Ian. That was the penultimate question of course, and leave it to Archie to skip any formalities or attempts to ease into the topic. He knew her too well. Still, the idea made her smile.

A few months ago it would have earned a glare or a door slam, and a firm contradiction, so this was, by any standard, a great deal of progress.

Belle finished her shower and exited the bathroom in nothing but a towel. As she padded across the floor to the bedroom, Weaver glanced up from his laptop with a raised eyebrow and let out a low whistle. She threw him a look before she stepped into the bedroom and heard him chuckling as she closed the door.

Her skin felt tingly and warm, and she knew it was from more than just the water. The last couple of weeks she’d found herself almost distracted by her attraction to Weaver, and the pleasing banter and light teasing they had established between them only made it worse. She had to admit that he was different now than he’d been when they were first together, though she was uncertain what it meant. It made her want to stay, to get back together officially, in a way that left no doubt for either of them. But it also made her want to do all manner of naughty things.

Smiling to herself, she pulled on a pair of soft cotton pajama shorts and started digging in one of her bags for a shirt. Most of her work things were back in the closet, but with only one dresser, her casual clothes were relegated to a suitcase and two duffel bags. Frowning as she pulled out everything except what she was looking for, she reached into the inside pocket of the bag and pulled out something unexpected.

A small black box tumbled to the floor, and she hesitated for a long moment before picking it up.

Belle sat on the edge of the bed and swallowed hard, running her thumb back and forth over the soft velvet. She knew what was inside, but she hadn’t looked at it in a long time. With the way she’d been feeling towards Weaver lately, she wasn’t sure she should, fearful that it might bring up the wrong memories. Closing her eyes for a second, she flipped the box open.

The diamond sparkled even in the low light from the lamp on the nightstand.

She plucked it free, turning it this way and that, and making small shapes on the floor when it caught the light just right. Holding the band, she slid the tip of her finger in and out of the ring, feeling the smooth, cool metal. Before, in the weeks and months immediately after their divorce, she would take it out every now and then, and look at it. It usually resulted in her having a good cry and stress eating an entire sleeve of Oreos. She’d only brought it with her from her apartment because it was with her other jewelry, and though she’d known it was packed into one of the bags, it had been put out of her mind.

On impulse, she pushed it over her knuckle and settled it on the appropriate finger. Her hand flexed as she admired it, pleased that it still fit perfectly and didn’t look to be in any need of cleaning. She expected it to feel strange, since she rarely ever wore rings before she was married, and hadn’t on that finger since their separation. Bracelets and rings had always bothered her when she had to type or write, and throughout university and law school she was forever taking them off and putting them in her bag, finding them days later. But this ring had never been a hindrance, and she barely even noticed it as she worked. It wasn’t heavy or gaudy, and it didn't have so many facets and points as to snag her clothes.

Shaking her head, she quickly pulled it off and set it back in the box, and put the box back in the inside pocket where it had been before going back to looking for her nightshirt. Strangely, she kept looking down at her hand as she rummaged through the laundry basket. After being on her finger for only a minute or so, it made no sense that her hand would be missing the ring’s presence.

With a huff, she gave up trying to find the shirt that matched her shorts, and turned around to look for something else to wear, when her eyes landed on something of Weaver’s that had been mixed in with her laundry. She picked up his very faded and well worn Celtic Football Club shirt, and immediately pulled it over her head. The fabric was soft from years of wear and washing. It might have been her imagination, but even though it was clean there was the faintest hint of his scent on it and she pulled it up to her nose and inhaled.

Smiling, she opened the door and stood there, leaning against the doorframe until she was noticed.

“Is that my shirt?” Weaver asked, setting the laptop down on the coffee table.

Belle shrugged one shoulder and sauntered towards him, letting her desire add an extra sway to her hips. “Is it? It was in the laundry basket with my things.”

“Hmm, was it…” he said, leaning back on the sofa as a grin curved his lips. “Maybe that’s because you’re always stealing it.”

Her eyebrows lifted. “Are you accusing me of a crime, Detective?”

His throat bobbed as he swallowed, watching her step around the coffee table to stand in front of him.

“Do you want it back?” she asked, putting one knee on the sofa beside his hip.

“No,” Weaver replied, licking his lips. “Looks better on you than it ever did on me.”

She brought her other knee down and straddled him, holding her body away from his. He held her waist, already bunching the shirt as she leaned over him. “Too bad.”

"Why's that?"

She felt his hands slide down to her backside and then up, lifting the shirt as his palms moved up her back. His hips shifted forward, and she allowed him to pull her down just a little as a low ache settled in her core.

Her lips brushed his, teasing him with the wet heat of her breath. “I was going to tell you to come and take it.”

august writers month 1/31

okay so i’ve never actually completed a writers month before and because i’ve been binge watching stargate and that my only active muses are for the universe, that i would do this challenge using them and the prompt list that @timelordthirteen​ kindly curated (i apologise for tagging ! i just wanted to make sure i was giving credit xx).

          AUGUST 1ST - NONE OF THIS IS YOUR FAULT.

It’s always hard to let go of something or someone. When they've been there for a long time and they've always been by your side, always said good morning and good night. Someone who has ingrained themselves into your life so properly that it's hard to say goodbye. It’s always hard not to think that they would walk through the front door and tell you that it was just a joke. It’s just very hard to move on.

Elenore's had a lot of experience with losing the ones she loves the most. Her father was killed when she rather young and her mother disappeared in the middle of the night, leaving the young baker to grow up too quickly. She has her ways to cope with the grief and the loss but she knew that a certain Major wasn’t doing too well.

She watched him step into the commissary the morning after the first week, bags under his eyes and his movements sluggish. She had a feeling that he hadn’t slept at all, too busy thinking up ways of trying to find Aiden and to bring him home safely. So, picking up the most colourful tray filled with Athosian fruits, Ellie was determined to cheer him up, even if she was still hurting on the inside herself. Taking a breath, Ellie then made her way over to Major Sheppard’s table.

“May I sit?” She asked him but he didn’t look up from his coffee cup. Ellie frowned, she hadn’t seen him this torn up before. She had done her crying, most of it into Teyla’s shoulder in the privacy of her quarters at night, but she had to put on a brave face for everyone - the crew didn’t really want to have snot and tears in their breakfast. “Major Sheppard?”

John Sheppard wouldn’t be lying when he said he hadn’t noticed her. She was light on her feet, which made her extremely quiet and even more so was she quick to serve everyone, so when she called his name, it took John a second (or two) to realise that she was talking to him. Looking up, grey eyes met blue and Ellie had to clear her throat slightly at the breath that caught at the back of her throat, clutching the large platter she held a little tighter. “Uh yeah, sure go ahead.” John gestured towards the empty set across from him.

Nodding her head more out of habit than anything, Ellie placed the tray onto the table and slid into the empty chair. “Uh, these are the closest looking fruits that the Athosians have.” John raised a brow and pursed his lips. “Teyla said this one taste like an apple.” Ellie reaches over and picks up a long oblong-shaped purple fruit. "I've been trying to work with the ingredients that are available here in Pegasus, but it is tempting to ask Colonel Caldwell for ten crates of fruit every time he comes for a visit."

“Looks more like an eggplant,” John replied. “I don’t know if I’d eat it like an apple.” Ellie snorted before it fell into silence, except for the murmur of people around them and the sound of the waves crashing against the city below.

“You know that none of this is your fault right?” Ellie mumbled - placing the fruit back on the tray, her hands tucked into her lap. John’s eyes snapped up and narrowed ever so slightly. He had heard from Teyla about the sleepless nights that Ellie's had over the past week. Not once has she spent the night alone, she always was turning up to her shift a little late and was trying to conceal it all behind the bare minimum of makeup that they were allowed to bring.

“You know that’s not true.” He mumbled back the grip on his mug tightened.

“Aiden made his choice.” Ellie was finally at the point where she knew that what Aiden did, that running away, away from the help that he could have received - away from her, wasn't her fault. Or John's. “He chose that he didn’t want our help.”

“I could have done more to stop him from leaving,” A hand moved from the mug and ran over his face, coming to rest his chin in the palm of his hand and scratch at his beard. “Should have been there to stop that Wraith." Ellie sucked in a slight breath, she should have been there to help as well - even if she was just the chef - she knew how to hold her own. "I just hope he’s okay.”

Silence once more between them and Ellie couldn't believe what she did next. Taking her hand away from her lap, she leaned forward and rested it against his arm. Swallowing, Ellie tried not to think about it too much. “I know Aiden Ford, he’s more than resilient.” Even with that Wraith venom running through him, Ellie knew that he could fend for himself and if he wanted them to help, they would find him again.

John heaved out a sigh and looked down at her hand, which was still resting against his arm. Ellie cleared her throat and started to pull away before John’s hand came and rested on top of hers. The brunette froze, eyes lingering on their hands. A deep breath in and a smile crossed her lips then. His hand was so much bigger than hers. “I hope you’re right.” John finally spoke up.

“I’m always right.” and with that the conversation turned back to discussing the strange looking fruit once more, their hands still lingering awfully close to each other.

Fun fact, Ami Radunskaya, former president of the Association for Women in Mathematics, and current and eternal badass, spoke directly to me in a hallway to thank me for coming to her talk at the Joint Math Meeting and asking questions. I, of course, then proceeded to stutter and thank her for uh, being herself, I think. As a result I am now deceased.

She told us a little bit about how she got to where she is. She told us about how she saw that boys got to do different things than girls, in dance and in music and in school. She studied music in college because math wasn't for girls. But then, later in her life, she went back, and studied math, even though people told her she couldn't, she's too old, she's a woman, no one will take her seriously, whatever. She said her mother was Polish Catholic and her father was Jewish and they had to run away to get married and "I think maybe that's where I got a little bit of my rebellious spirit."

She's just perfectly lovely. Brilliant and strong and warm and she does such good math and she's so skilled at sharing it in ways that can be understood.

Black Tupelo History: The Hill

Elvis Presley lived IN black neighborhoods, particularly the black Park Hill neighborhood in Tupelo. The litlle family lived on the commercial fringes of the "'cross the tracks" famous black ghetto called Shake Rag but not in the residential part of it. They lived behind a Shake Rag business, basically in a shed - just one payment from homelessness.

And then - and no one knows how, they somehow found their way to "The Hill." There were about 3 or 4 "dogrun" style two-family houses designated "white" and they rented half of one of them. It had hot and cold running water! A first for Elvis and his parents. Only one unusual white boy visited him there, ever. Elvis' little running buddies "on The Hill" were all black. 11, 12 and 13 year-old little boys. They went to the movies together (and SAT together! Elvis literally "jumped Jim Crow" by jumping over the railing that separated black and white: he'd sit on the floor with the sticky soda and candy all over it.) They played baseball together, played marbles, wrestled, gently teased each other, had nicknames - totally different from his less than happy school experience with the white kids - but he had to go there. He couldn't go to the school his friends went to. It was against the law then.

Elvis at 12, when he lived on The Hill

The first time Elvis Presley ever played piano was in a house in the Park Hill section. He knew a little girl named Janice Scales whose family invited him in. He was drawn to the piano like a magnet and tried to play it. Elvis went to black gospel tent revivals when he lived there and listened to live blues at the black Elks Club on The Hill. He learned a lot also on the porch of Mayhorn's Grocery which now has an official city plaque noting that Elvis and his little guitar were there. It's still standing but is no longer a grocery. And he snuck peeks through the windows at Saturday night fish frys and juke joints in Shake Rag according to local musician, the late Charles "Bo" Clanton. None of the other boys were with him; it was forbidden.

Several kids who lived there went on to be community leaders. Willie Pooch was a very talented bluesman who remembered playing baseball with Elvis, Robert Jameison - who had happy memories of playing marbles with Elvis, became a prominent minister and was involved in the Civil Rights Movement. Dr. Walter A. Zuber was a well-known black medical doctor in that area of the state. His daughter, Dr. Etta Zuber Falconer¹ went on to much greater fame. She made history as one of the first black women to get a Ph.D. in Mathematics, among her many other accolades.² She was just a couple of years older than Elvis and had to have known him at least for a brief time because her dad treated the family as a physician. She sadly was stricken with pancreatic cancer and passed away at only 68.

Another friend, probably Elvis' bestie there, was Sam Bell, who is kind of the unofficial historian of the historic Park Hill neighborhood. It's gone now, torn down and grown over for an Interstate highway. There's a log that marks the spot where Elvis and his parents lived. Nothing is written on the log. It might have been a happy accident of nature. Or someone may have placed it there.

The Presleys had to move because Elvis' daddy was running white lightning to make the rent money. He had to get the heck out of Mississippi. They then moved to Memphis. Quickly.

There's an old blues phrase that went "the only thing I did wrong/Was stay in Mississippi a day too long." Another story for another day. His daddy always did what he had to do to feed his little boy and his wife. From the beginning it wasn't easy.

¹Dr. Etta Zuber Falconer went to college at age 15. So she would have known him only briefly. She was obviously very studious - and a girl. She wasn't playing baseball and marbles at 14. She was studying trigonometry.

Detective Weaver/Belle French, Explicit

Chapter Summary: Belle feels out of sorts, and Weaver makes another crucial discovery.

Belle groaned and rolled over, facing away from the sunlight slanting in through the gap in the blinds and tucking her face into the pillow and sheets.

Weaver pulled a t-shirt over his head, and glanced at her. “Alright?”

She lifted her head and squinted at the clock. It was nearly eight. “Am I dead?”

He snorted softly. “If you can ask the question, then I think the answer is automatically no. Still not feeling well?”

Turning around, he moved to the bed and sat on the edge, reaching out a hand to feel her forehead and the side of her face. “No warmer than usual.”

“My head is killing me,” she mumbled, finally rolling onto her back. “And my stomach is...blah.”

Two days ago, Belle had awakened to a mildly nauseous feeling, but assumed it was the burritos they’d had for dinner coming back to haunt her. It was carried out from a new place down the block, which was always fraught with danger, both in terms of how the food might taste, and the reaction one’s body might have later, but their meal had been delicious, and Weaver had felt no ill effects. Last night, a headache had sent her to bed early, and seemed to have gotten worse overnight.

Frowning, he ran a soothing hand up and down her leg. “Maybe you need to see someone.”

She sighed and pushed herself up. “I have my last follow up appointment today, from removing the stitches. If it hasn’t gone away by then, I’ll bring it up.”

Weaver nodded and stood to finish getting dressed. “When do you see Archie again?”

“After my follow up,” she replied, pausing on the side of the bed to press a hand to her forehead.

“Did you, uh, still want me to go with you?” She looked up, and he shrugged. “Not today, but sometime?”

“Yeah, not - not today.” Then she made a face and then asked, “Can you get me some Tylenol or something?”

“Yeah, sure. And coffee?”

At that, Belle smiled. “God yes.”

Weaver left the bedroom, and Belle forced herself to stand up. After a moment of dizziness, she realized she felt a bit better, and wondered if she had just slept wrong. She was actually looking forward to getting her official, clean bill of health from the follow up visit, and to discussing something particular with Archie - the matter of how to approach her questions with Ian. She had started thinking about the miscarriage in her head, whispering about it to herself in the shower at night, telling the story over and over, and finding that as she did it became easier. A passing reference to such a thing even a few weeks ago would have made her clam up and try to pretend she never heard it. Now it was becoming part of her, much in the same way her mother’s death had, though that had been more of a factor of time and distance than any real effort on her part.

Throughout the morning Weaver seemed to be paying her extra attention, to the point where it was starting to get annoying. Her headache abated before they’d even left the apartment, and her stomach settled with some eggs, toast, and strong coffee. At the office, he was constantly side-eyeing her, stealing little glances, with none of the winking or cheeky smiles that had passed between them in the preceding days. The pressure was back on, and she was sure the stress of the case and the looming court date were the cause of her recent ills.

“You’re sure you’re alright?”

Belle huffed and pulled on her suit jacket. “Yes, I’m fine, and shortly I’ll have an actual medical doctor confirm it. Then you can stop worrying.

Weaver leaned back on the sofa, a file folder open across his lap. “I’m unlikely to ever stop worrying about you.”

She tilted her head and gave him a small smile. His concern came from a place of love, and she had always thought his protective nature was one of his best qualities.

Her purse strap went over her shoulder, with a quick flip of her hair, and then she walked over to where he was sitting. “Then maybe just stop peeking at me every five minutes?”

He reached out and took hold of her hand, rubbing his thumb over the back of it as he looked up at her. “No peeking,” he confirmed. “Got it. How about gazing?”

She snorted and bent down to plant a kiss on the top of his head.

“Ogling?” he offered with a grin. “Leering?”

She shook her head and let him pull her hand in for a kiss before pulling away. “Put your eyes on those records, Detective, instead of my ass.”

Weaver pursed his lips and blew her a kiss as she sauntered through the office door.

Belle tapped her foot against the metal step of the exam table as she scrolled through her messages.

She’d left the office barely twenty minutes ago and there were already more than thirty unread items in her inbox. Most of them were automatic responses to her requests for more of Eloise Tremaine’s records from Nevada. While the online submission system Clark County had was far more convenient than calling around city buildings and being passed from clerk to clerk, the web forms and extra emails were much less helpful than an actual human being. Still, progress was being made, and she was sure that if they could find the tie between Eloise and the Branson brothers, that they’d have exactly what DA Midas wanted.

She sighed and rubbed her left temple, feeling her earlier headache trying to return. She need to take another dose of painkillers before she got to Dr. Hopper’s.

Abruptly, the exam room door swung open and Dr. Whale came in. “Miss French.”

She looked up and smiled. “Dr. Whale.”

“Good to see you again,” he said, setting a tablet on the small counter to the side. Then he slipped on a pair of gloves and lifted her hair out of the way as he eyed the scar left from her head wound.

“Not bad,” he muttered. “There’s still some redness, but that will fade. Have you been using the ointment I gave you?”

Belle nodded. “I used up the tube, but I don’t think I need it now. The skin’s not tender anymore.”

He gave a curt nod and stepped back. “All the other superficial cuts seem to have disappeared.”

“Good moisturizer and concealer,” she said, and he laughed. “But yes, they all healed up pretty quick, thankfully.”

“Yeah, I can imagine.” He sat down on the small stool at the counter and entered a few things into the app on his tablet. “Well, I will have the necessary form faxed to your workplace, and then I won’t have to see you until it’s time for your annual check up.”

She exhaled and smiled, pleased to have at least one thing behind her for now. “Good.”

“So, the nurse said something about a headache?”

“I, uh, yeah, I had one this morning, why?”

“Not frequent, then?”

She shook her head, which caused a mild throbbing wave across her forehead.

“Migraine, or just a regular headache?”

She gave him a look. “It’s just a regular headache, I shouldn’t have even mentioned it.”

Dr. Whale leaned on the counter and regarded her for a moment. “Is it coming back now?” Reluctantly, she confirmed it was. “Any other symptoms?”

Belle gave him a wane smile. “Yes, I know. I’m - I’m seeing Dr. Hopper about it.”

“Ah. Well, that’s good,” Dr. Whale said as he pushed to his feet. “Look, I think we should do some tests, just to be sure.”

Her eyes narrowed. “What tests?”

“A basic chemistry panel, maybe a blood count, see if you might have an infection coming on.”

She frowned again, the wrinkling of her forehead causing another small wave of pain. “Sure, I guess.”

“I’ll send the vampire in to take your samples, okay?”

That earned him a soft snort and a nod. “Okay.”

Belle waited a few minutes for the nurse, and then several more as she filled up three tubes with blood. Her arm was aching after it was done, and she wondered how she’d explain the bandaid and bruise in the crease of her elbow to Weaver. If he knew Whale wanted blood samples, he’d worry even more and become unbearable. He’d probably insist on packing her off home and waiting on her in bed.

Still, as she left the clinic and stepped out onto the street to walk down to Archie’s building, she was glad she let them do the tests. If she was getting sick, she wanted to know right away so she could be back to one hundred percent to finish out the case well before the trial started.

Weaver spread out the pictures across the top of the conference table, and placed the associated forms beneath.

He wanted to have everything laid out by the time Belle returned from her appointments, so he could show her what he had found. Another break only a short time after the revelation of Eloise’s true surname had him buzzing with excitement. This was what he truly loved about his job, digging out the pieces and putting the puzzle together. The part where they hopefully got justice for the victims was satisfying, but there was something about the mental and physical effort of investigating, the late hours and countless pots of coffee, that was only second to being with Belle.

That he got to do it with Belle again made it even better, and he hoped that things would continue as they had into the future. They had yet to discuss their relationship in any detail, but she wasn’t in any rush to leave the apartment, and the last two weeks had been among the happiest since the early days of their marriage. He wanted to wait until the stress of the case was over before approaching the subject again, but for now everything seemed perfect.

The office door opened and he turned to see Belle, who looked a little worse for wear than when she had left just a couple of hours earlier.

“You okay?”

She sighed heavily as she put her purse in its usual bottom desk drawer, and said nothing as she took off her suit jacket.

“Belle?”

“Yeah, fine,” she replied. “Just tired. Talking to Archie takes a lot of out of me I guess.”

He nodded, but remained quietly unconvinced. She had been out of sorts the last couple of days, which certainly could have been stress related, but Belle usually thrived under the deadline of a trial. Right now she seemed barely able to drag herself across the room to see his newfound evidence.

“Well, maybe this will wake you up,” he said. “I got something on our second victim, Charlie Dunn.”

“Oh?” Belle perked up a bit at that, and kicked off her shoes before padding across the room. “What did you find?”

“This,” he said, giving her a sly look as he pointed to the faded pink carbon copy form under Charlie’s picture.

Her eyes narrowed as she scanned the page, and then she picked it up. It was the cover page to an adoption agreement with Charlie’s name on it from nearly twenty years ago. He would have been about six or seven at the time. What struck her though, was the state seal at the top.

“This is from Nevada.”

Weaver grinned. “Yep.”

She looked at him wide eyed. “Charlie was adopted.”

“From Nevada,” he added, nodding towards the paper.

She set the paper down on the table and looked over at one of the other victim’s pictures. “Just like Molly was.”

“Yep.”

She straightened and turned to him, eyebrows raised. “You don’t think -?”

His grin widened. “Oh, I do think.”

“If the others are adopted too…” she started.

He nodded. “Or were foster children…”

Her mouth fell open as she finally caught on to his line of thinking. “Of Eloise Tremaine.”

Belle jumped forward and pressed a hand to his chest. He could feel her body shaking with the same excitement he’d had at the discovery and what it might mean. Instantly she looked refreshed, and he was glad to see that it was probably the case dragging on and the stress that had gotten her down.

Weaver picked up a stack of papers and handed them over to her. “I took the liberty of filling out all the forms while you were gone. Including the fax cover sheets.
