thoughts on volume 15 of real:
just checked the ao3 tag and there are e l e v e n fanworks in there. two of them are in english. i better start writing i guess. anyway volume live slug reaction:
GOOD LORD this one was intense. there are 4 more chapters that haven't been collected into volumes that i can read now but this volume ends on Such A Cliffhanger. lot to unpack.
first of all it is. quite obvious that the manga went on hiatus between the last volume and this one because this art is. Slick. look at it.
there is a gay love triangle happening in these three panels. ryo's unrequited crush on kiyoharu ("kiyo." since when does ryo get nickname privileges) vs whatever kiyoharu and aoki have going on. they barely even come into direct contact but they live so rent-free in each others' minds. the two worst personalities in the tokyo metropolitan area.
Horrible Things are Happening To Kiyoharu. good. just the kick in the pants this boy needs. he's been cut from the national team and replaced with aoki, and the tigers have just lost a tournament in the first round and nagano is leaving for germany, so their future is not exactly bright. maybe nagano will meet up with noel noa and they can train together.
we got a scene with kiyoharu crying with azumi at his mother's grave which would have been a perfect time for him to confess EXCEPT he didn't do that. he just proclaimed that he wants to win gold at the paralympics.
boy you have a pretty girl who has a crush on you right there and you tell her about Basketball. at least he got to cry it out a little bit. hash out his feelings with his mother and azumi.
takahashi is. not doing well at basketball. not being able to throw or catch the ball yet is demoralizing for him and in True Takahashi Fashion he gives up before he can properly try. maybe he was doing all that speed training because he was scared of what would happen when he tried to shoot. How Ever. the Cliffhanger that the volume ends on is him asking nagai what his position is. little hope spot for him. he may make a turnaround.
even bald he's cute when he cries. i love this boy and his complicated self.
nomiya is in jail. all that fighting caught up to him. we get more insight on his relationship with takahashi while he's reflecting in his cell. they were friends!! now they're enemies!! friends to enemies to lovers? young man yaoi? their backstories parallel each other through their mutual fatherlessness. which explains a lot about both of them.
but we also get a nomiya mother appearance and a hope spot for him as well. he gets a call from natsumi and her manga has gotten published in this universe's equivalent of shonen jump!! we love to see a girlboss winning.
immediately after that he gets a call from kiyoharu telling him to come to what may be the tigers' last practice. if it is i Will cry.
so as of now all six of our protagonists' parents have been accounted for and all three of them are from broken homes which is probably why i love them so much. having two living married parents who love each other is so 1996. anyway. there was a strong focus on Mothers in this volume, mostly on wanting to make Mothers Proud, which will never fail to make me cry. love when a tough guy is a mama's boy.
i realized while reading that kiyoharu is probably too short to play standing basketball. nomiya is five-nine and kiyoharu is consistently drawn a little shorter than him, so...five-six, five-seven maybe? little guy.
i leave you all with cursed noseless kiyoharu

Magia Record sprite index and beta material
I’ve been making a personal catalogue of Magia Record’s various internal minutiae for a while now, and I’ve found enough interesting little details that I figured I could make a whole post out of them. So here they are!
Note: contains spoilers for the entirety of Arc 1 and Arc 2, as well as speculation about future content.
*Details about the game’s BG files and related material are contained in a separate post for length.
---------------------------------------
[Index of battle sprites / Live2D sprites]
Each set of character sprites has a 6-digit ID. The first 4 digits (listed here) correspond to the unique character, while the last 2 digits correspond to alternate costumes, NPC color palettes, or battle sprite variants.
1000s: Magia Record's main story cast (arc 1, then arc 2)
2000s: Madoka Magica OG cast
3000s: Magia Record's supporting cast
4000s: Crossover characters (both Madoka and other franchises)
5000s: ---
6000s: Boss enemies
7000s: Regular enemies
8000s: Live2D NPCs
1001 - Iroha Tamaki
1002 - Yachiyo Nanami
1003 - Tsuruno Yui
1004 - Sana Futaba
1005 - Felicia Mitsuki

1016 - Kanagi Izumi
1017 - Mitama Yakumo
1018 - Tsukuyo Amane
1019 - Tsukasa Amane
-The members of Team Mikazuki Villa are listed in order of appearance, with the exception of Sana and Felicia, whose positions are swapped. This is also the order in which they show up in the Arc 1 OP.
-Nemu is listed separately from the other two Magius, possibly as an artifact of earlier story drafts where she was a separate third party. (eg. a handful of comments by Inu Curry in Magia Archive vol.1 & 2 mention that Iroha and Touka's Doppels were designed to be similar from the start, while Nemu's was revised to match theirs some time afterward)
(If the Arc 1 OP is anything to go by, maybe Mifuyu could’ve been a full-time Magius herself in that early draft?)
-Karin and Asuka are the only supporting cast members listed up here. Another artifact of early drafts? Or maybe just because they're also Aoki Ume designs?
1020 - Kagome Satori
1021 - Yuna Kureha
1022 - Hikaru Kirari
1023 - Ao Kasane
1024 - Juri Ooba

1038 - Mikage Yakumo
1039 - Sudachi Sawa
1040 - Yozuru Sasame
1041 - Livia Medeiros
-Arc 2 characters are listed with Kagome first, then by group affiliation: Promised Blood, Tokime Clan, Neo Magius, Folklore of 0, then the unaffiliated duo and Puella Care. The group leaders pictured in Arc 2′s logo and OP are listed first in their respective groups.

-Seasonal variant units for a given character are listed as 11xx, 12xx, 13xx... etc., with xx being the last two digits of the character's regular ID.
-Unlike other characters’ alternate sprite sets, Holy Alina's Chapter 10 sprites are listed as if they’re an entirely separate variant unit. (Might have to do with her separate voice lines?)
2001 - Madoka Kaname
2002 - Homura Akemi
2003 - Glasses Homura
2004 - Sayaka Miki
2005 - Mami Tomoe
2006 - Kyouko Sakura
2007 - Nagisa Momoe
2008 - ---
2009 - Mayabu Aki
-OG series characters are listed in order of their first on-screen appearance in said series. Glasses Homura is the one exception, listed directly below Stoic Homura.
-...Who’s the gap at 2008 for? The girl from the Walpurgis Rising trailer?
2100 - Haregi Madoka
2101 - Ultimate Madoka
2102 - Madoka-senpai
2103 - Ultimate Madoka-senpai

-Unlike the Magia Record cast, the OG cast's seasonal variants are listed at 2x00, 2x01, 2x02... etc., with x being the last digit of their regular ID. The main MagiReco cast presumably uses a different numbering system because x quickly reaches double digits for them.
3001 - Kanoko Yayoi

3044 - Ranka Chizu
3045 - Rion Yuzuki
3046 - Ryou Midori
3047 - Chika Aoba
3048 - Hotaru Yura
3049 - Kanae Yukino
3050 - Yuuna Kaharu

3504 - Bridal Masara & Kokoro
3505 - Leila & Seika (& Mito)
3900 - Kuro (Dark-type)
3901 - Yusa Yumeno
3902 - Shii
-Sakurako is oddly listed in the middle of the 3000s, despite being both a limited-time Fate Weave character and fairly important to Arc 1, and had the name "Kanon Aira" in her Live2D parameters between her debut in Chapter 8 and the Live2D update in 2021. This is likely because her design was repurposed from a scrapped character(!)-- according to her artist commentary in Magia Archive vol.2, her original design concept was "a former A.I. that became human", with the power icon on her neck explicitly being her Soul Gem.
→ (Interestingly enough, her seasonal unit is likewise listed as “Kanon Aira”, and hasn’t been updated yet. I imagine it was just a holdover for internal consistency’s sake, in that case?)
-Even back when she only existed on the North American server, Ashley's Live2D parameters similarly identified her as "Ashley Moran" in Japanese text. Combined with her position in the middle of the 3000s, this suggests that she was drawn up at the same stage in development as everyone else before eventually being assigned as the NA exclusive.
4001 - Oriko Mikuni
4002 - Kirika Kure
4003 - Yuma Chitose
4004 - Final Oriko
4011 - Kazumi (+ fellow clones / Michiru Kazusa, not playable)
4012 - Umika Misaki
4013 - Kaoru Maki
4014 - Kazumi Subaru (listed internally as simply “White Kazumi”)
4015 - Saki Asami (not playable)
4016 - Nico Kanna (not playable)
4017 - Michiru Kazusa (not playable)
4021 - Darc
4022 - Liz Hawkwood
4023 - Melissa de Vignolles

4052 - Fate T. Harlaowne
4053 - Hayate Yagami
4061 - Chisato Nishikigi
4062 - Takina Inoue
4121 - Isabeau de Bavière (Witch ver.)
4122 - Isabeau de Bavière (Puella Magi ver.)
-Spinoff and crossover characters are listed at 40xx. The third digit groups the characters by their series of origin-- Oriko, Kazumi, Darc, Suzune, Monogatari, Nanoha, LycoReco-- and the fourth digit counts up for each specific character within a group. If the amount of characters in a group exceeds 9, as is the case with Isabeau, those additional characters go in 41xx under the same third digit.
-The Oriko trio are the only 4000-series characters who are always available in the Premium Fate Weave. Based on this, Oriko’s Doppel Challenge, and their lack of presence outside each of their personal stories, some speculate that they were planned to have a larger role in Arc 1′s storyline before being cut.
6000 - Teresa
6001 - Candy

6225 - 10^-5 (Saturn)
6226 - --- (would be... the sun or moon?)
6227 - 10^-7 (Yin/Yang)
-With the exceptions of Teresa, Candy and Shitori Egumo, "main storyline" bosses are listed in order of appearance at 60xx, while "miscellaneous" ones are listed at 61xx. The first list goes straight from Arc 1's Rumors to Arc 2's Feelings, with no gap in between. The second list also includes witches who first appeared in the anime.
-Teresa and Candy's positions are most likely mid-development holdovers. According to Inu Curry, Teresa was originally meant for the prologue before being replaced with Patricia. Pre-release material (see sister post) indicates that Candy was originally the witch chased by Iroha and Yachiyo in Chapter 1, before being swapped out with Zenobia.
-I guess Shitori Egumo gets a special position at the start of the 6100s because she's a final boss?
-The empty slots surrounding 10^-43 correspond to different variants of her minions in the 72xx section.
-The 6300s and 7300s don't have anything currently assigned to them.
6400 - Patricia

6501 - Kamihama Saint (battle sprites)
6502 - Giant Iroha-chan
-And then 650x is just kind of a catch-all, apparently.
-Matasaburo is the only "reskinned" boss to have a completely different ID from its base version. All other bosses and minions have their seasonal variants listed at the same 4 initial digits, and are differentiated by only the last 2.

-Shitori Egumo only has one minion, so the empty slot after said minion is filled by the letter-carrying Kirico Keepers. (Maybe this is because they regularly showed up in Main Story missions, whereas their Daily Labyrinth siblings didn’t until the end of Arc 2?)

[Beta item graphics]
(I made this section for Paola’s flag, but it’s officially available in-game now! Huzzah. So there’s no unused item graphics ATM.)
---------------------------------------
[Voice lines]
Every playable character has Doppel summoning lines, Awakening lines from 3 to 5 stars, and so on, regardless of how high or low their initial rarity is. Since at least a few characters’ rarities were up in the air during development (eg. Himika), it makes sense that they’d record enough voice lines for every possibility in advance.
Additionally, here’s a couple things I found particularly interesting:
-Each character has one more login line after their Max AP and BP lines. Much like how Max AP lines generally mention a witch nearby and Max BP mentions Endless Mirrors, this third line tends to mention a large conflict between nearby Magical Girls. While I haven’t checked the most recent characters and costumes, these lines were still included for every character well into the endgame of Arc 2, so the game element they were recorded for was probably still being considered at that point. (Some kind of PvP raid?)
-Each character has one more unused Awakening line after their 5-star one, plus an extra victory line/MGS menu line that would presumably be unlocked alongside it. I wasn’t sure what this was at first-- like, maybe it could also be for maxing out the skill tree?-- but as it turns out (thanks to firankamipinska for telling me about this!!), it’s explicitly a 6-star Awakening line. As in, MagiRepo Iroha-chan and Rena-chan’s lines literally say “omg I’m a 6-star now! :U” in just as many words.
→ ...If that ever happens, I’m going to have to revise all my spreadsheets... ( ;∀; )
(Also, I haven’t checked every voice line from every character, so if there’s any other stuff I missed, feel free to let me know!)

[Creature design credits]
OG series witches (incl. Paola): Concept by both members of Gekidan Inu Curry, in-game supervision by Doroinu. Patricia, Elly and their minions are an exception, with Doroinu credited for both concept and supervision.
Game-original witches and Uwasa: Concept by f4samurai, in-game supervision by Doroinu. Etteilla, Shitori Egumo and her minions, the “Mr. Purrs-a-Lot” Rumors, the Witch of Mirrors, and the Witch of Symbols are exceptions, with Doroinu credited for both concept and supervision. (*The Purrs-a-Lot puppets were also created by dollmaker LIEN!)
Kimochi: currently unspecified.
Doppels for game-original and OG casts: Both concept and supervision by Doroinu, unless otherwise noted. Exceptions are below:
-Madoka-senpai: concept and supervision by PAPA/Doroinu.
-Himika, Felicia-chan, Rena-chan, Kokoro, Yukika, Hanna, Yozuru, Sudachi, Olga, Gunhild, Toyo, Mitsuru: concept and supervision by each of their respective artists and designers.
-Livia, Ryouko, Rui, Yuuna, Shizuka, Jun, Halloween Kanagi & Momoko, Mikage, Mitsune, Sae, Nayuta, Surfing Sayaka, Yuna, Kushu, San, Miyuri, Sunrise Shizuka, Asahi, Himena, Urara, Lavi, Summer Kuroe, Kagome, Tsuyu, Chizuru, Ebony, Heruka, Ayaka, Rika, Amaryllis: concept by f4samurai, supervision by Doroinu. (Many of which were presumably because Doroinu was swamped with work on the anime. ;;^^)
Spinoff witches and Doppels: concept and supervision by their respective spinoffs’ artists and designers (with the exception of the Monogatari crossovers, which have Doroinu for both, and Kazumi Subaru’s Doppel, which has f4samurai listed for the OG concept).
---------------------------------------
[Beta creature designs]
Most of f4samurai's initial enemy concepts haven't been published, but a few have seen the light of day here and there. I’ve compiled them in an imgur album (since I’d have to shrink them to embed directly in the post, orz).
(also the transparencies might be kind of messed up on mobile?? double orz)
Teresa - Was present on Arc 2's website before being replaced with her canon design. Can still be viewed via the Wayback Machine and on certain sub-pages. (The part in her Archive description about “originally being the witch of pendulum clocks” is a literal reference to this initial design.)
Candy - From Arc 2's website (now replaced). A color version was repurposed as a "generic unknown witch" stand-in during Iroha's text conversation with Ai in Chapter 5. (Inu Curry’s comment in Magia Archive volume 1: “She was definitely cuter in a more ordinary way before we revised her design. Sorry about that.”)
Huygens(?) - From Arc 2's website (replaced, though still present on sub-pages and the mobile site).
Joseph - From early gameplay footage (see sister post). Not sure whether this is from before or after Inu Curry's revisions. Different head object; elements are differentiated by head and cape color.
Kirico Keepers (I) - From Arc 2's website (now replaced).
Kirico Keepers (II) - From Arc 2's website (now replaced).
Kirico Keepers (IV) - From Arc 2's website (replaced, though still present on sub-pages and the mobile site).
Oscar - From Arc 2's website, as well as early gameplay footage. Not sure whether this is from before or after Inu Curry's revisions. Elements are differentiated purely by color, rather than different head markings and bowties.

Yukimura Family Tree
The Yukimura family are a prominent family in Japan. The main family, now headed by Yukimura Sanbo, is the family Asuna comes from. However, she’s the daughter of one of the middle sons, and therefore her family wasn’t criticised as much for leaving the country. They’re well known in Japan, but not so much in the UK (think like, a Japanese version of the Black family, except they honestly care more about ethnicity than blood status). They’re very traditional still, following with clan traditions as well as their own. Betrothals occur frequently, and are usually between prominent wizarding families, with the occasional rich muggle in the extended family (cousins of her grandfather, not her aunts or uncles). As well as holding many investments in wizarding and muggle Japan, since Izumi moved his family to Scotland, the Yukimuras have held many investments in British wizarding and muggle businesses as well.
Yukimura Kotoko, née Nakamura, & Yukimura Izumi | mother & father | fc: Ishida Yuriko & Sanada Hiroyuki | age: 53 & 63
Kotoko grew up in Tokyo, Japan, where she attended Mahoutokoro School of Magic. She was the eldest daughter of Nakamura Michiko and Yuta, both prominent members of the Japanese Ministry for Magic. She met Yukimura Izumi, who was ten years her senior, when she was seventeen, when he was visiting his great grandparents for a summer, and the two became quick friends. Izumi came from another prominent family, and was the second oldest of his brothers, so he didn’t have the pressure to be perfect like his eldest brother did. However, he still followed tradition closely and despite Kotoko being younger and marrying her for love, she came from a family who his parents would have considered an arrangement with whether he was in love with the daughter or not. They got married when she turned 19, and had their first child, Emi, and then Misa, a year later. Asuna was born five years later, and the family relocated to Scotland when she was born, when Izumi was offered a position as the Japanese ambassador in the British Ministry.
Asuna was very close to her parents growing up. She was the baby, spoiled beyond belief, even despite their hesitance over Augustus. However, six years ago, when Augustus’ father passed, Asuna and her parents grew apart because she broke off a betrothal they’d arranged to move in with Augustus and help take care of his siblings and him. Although they’ve moved past this, things have never quite been the same. Now, more and more of her conversation with her parents are questions over whether she’s going to settle down, get married, and have kids soon, and even a resigned approval of Augustus.
Lee Emi, née Yukimura & Yukimura Misa | sisters | fc: Sawajiri Erika & Ishihara Satomi | age: 33 & 33
Asuna and her sisters were never close, likely because of the slight age gap between Misa and Asuna. Neither of her sisters ever seemed to want to spend time with her. But they were protective of each other, and more likely to take each others’ sides in things than another’s. The exception for Asuna, however, was always Augustus.
She learned everything she could about herbology so she could be closer to Emi, but she and Misa never really found common ground.
Emi is a socialite and housewife. She was in an arranged marriage with the son of the Korean Ambassador in the ministry, and Misa is a dragon trainer, although her parents are hoping she’ll settle down soon.
Murata Michiko & Yuta | maternal great grandmother & grandfather | fc: Hayakawa Sessue & Aoki Tsuru | age: 95 & 97
Michiko and Yuta met in school. They knew they were going to be married from a young age, as it had been arranged early. Therefore, against the wishes of their families, they got to know each other and were the best of friends as children. They had eight children together.
Nakamura Chiyuki, née Murata & Ayato | maternal grandmother & grandfather | fc: Umeki Miyoshi & Shigeta James | age: 75 & 78
Chiyuki was the youngest child of Murata Michiko and Yuta. She and Ayato didn’t know each other well, although they had years at Mahoutokoro where they were both there. They’d barely spoken before their wedding day. The wedding itself was beautiful, and they ended up very happy.
Yukimura Hinami & Sanbo | paternal grandmother & grandfather | fc: Kirin kiki & Morita Noriyuki | age: 85 & 97
Sanbo was the eldest of three brothers and five sisters. He became head of the clan when he was thirty, and took great care to look after not only his siblings and children, but the extended family and clan members.
Yukimura Akahana, Risa, and Tsubaki | cousins | fc: Myoui Mina, Minatozaki Sana, & Hirai Momo | age: 26
The Yukimura triplets are Asuna’s cousins who live in Japan, but visit every other year. The years they don’t come to Asuna, she goes to them. The four correspond with letters at least once a month and they’re quite close, despite not having lived in the same country since Asuna was three. Akahana, Risa, and Tsubaki all work in the Japanese ministry, and usually when Asuna visits, she floos directly to Tsubaki’s office.
Risa is the only person in her family who knows ( at least who’s positive ) that Asuna is in love with Augustus.
Yukimura Nina & Asuma | cousin & uncle | fc: Ishibashi Brittany & Gerald | age: 39 & 65
The father and older sister of the triplets. Her father’s older brother and best friend. Asuna was named after him, sort of, the kanji for his name reading ‘bright’, ‘sun’, and ‘true’, and that of hers reading ‘bright’, ‘sun’, and ‘calm’, and she’s quite close to him & Nina both as well. Asuma is the heir and is a prominent member of Japanese Ministry and wizarding society, as well as having business investments in the muggle world as well. Nina is set to inherit from him, since he has no sons. Nina is very independent and not always very traditional, and despite concerns for her lack of tradition, the family supports her because when she married her current husband, she kept her name and her children all have both hers and her husband’s name, so the Yukimura name will continue with the heir despite her being a woman.
Other living relatives:
Yukimura Tatuya & Yukito ;; uncles, younger brothers of Izumi.
Yukimura Ayaka & Sakura ;; aunts, sisters of Izumi.
Yukimura Miki, Mina, Yuto, Ken, & Momo, among others ;; other cousins.
Yukimura Chibo and Bo ;; paternal great-uncles.
Yukimura Yui & Akari ;; paternal great-aunts, wives of Chibo & Bo.
Yukimura Azumi, Ayumi, Yasuko, Kazuko, & Shizuka ;; paternal great-aunts, sisters of Sanbo, Chibo, & Bo.
Nakamura Nico, Sana, Tina, & Sota ;; cousins on her mother’s side.

The High School Fleet anime originally aired on April 7, 2016. Yuu Nobuta (A Good Librarian Like a Good Shepherd) directed the project at Production IMS, with Naoto Nakamura providing character designs. Reiko Yoshida (The Cat Returns, Girls und Panzer) was in charge of series composition for the show.
The title spawned an OVA, which hit retailers in 2017.
Aniplex of America currently holds the domestic rights to the High School Fleet anime. They describe the title as:
Living by the sea, protecting the sea, and journeying across the sea…They’re the BLUE MERMAIDS! Because of a shift in tectonic plates around 100 years ago, Japan lost much of its area to submergence. To preserve Japan’s territories, Coastal Cities sprung up, one after the other. Eventually, they became Marine Cities, and along with the expansion of sea-lanes to connect them, the need arose for a sizable staff to protect the seas. At the same time, maritime jobs were becoming more popular among women. Hence, the BLUE MERMAIDS, tasked with keeping the seas safe, had become every female student’s dream job. This is when childhood friends Akeno Misaki and Moeka China enroll in a marine high school in Yokosuka, along with other girls who share their goal of “BECOMING A BLUE MERMAID.”

thoughts on volume 14 of real
YAMA UPDATE 🍾🍾🍾 AND HE'S NOT DEAD!!! AND HE WILL LIKELY NOT BE DYING IN THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE!!! FUCK YEAH!!!!!
celebration aside this version of yama that now needs supplemental oxygen and has a carer, this is the happiest we've seen yama since. like. volume 5. i think the "technological advancements" in duchenne muscular dystrophy treatment that the characters were talking about here happened As The Serialization Was Ongoing so the bait-and-switch with yama's mortality makes sense in that context. also i was mad at first that they didn't name yama's disease, i had Figured it was dmd just based on how yama was talking about it, but we got confirmation in this volume that that's what it is.
ough i love yama so much. guy of all time.
I COULD CHANGE MY URL TO BE ABOUT HIM holy shit. i just need to take out the g. i'm not going to. (but i could)
nomiya has been given some Advice from some Old Friends and it seems he's creeping ever closer to finding out what he's made for. one of those friends was natsumi!! hi natsumi!! not a fan of the whole "character gains weight to indicate that they've hit rock bottom" but this was 2014 so i can let it slide a little bit.
we have nomiya's arc meeting up with kiyoharu's through the character of ota, one of nomiya's old coworkers, who's quit martial arts and gone into nursing care and physical therapy. he's yama's carer. when yama comes to the tigers' practice, they have a brief little moment of recognition. i hope this goes somewhere in regards to nomiya's character arc.
azumi is. in london. in school. with No Conclusion on the Unresolved Romantic Tension. :killing: and fumika is not handling her new manager position very well.
and takahashi is bald again. i redact what i said in volume 6 about his hair. but his character development is still barreling forward!! and so is the man himself. he's realized that he needs to be able to move faster in his chair to keep up with the dreams and that's his temporary short-term goal. he wants to be a big scorer like fujikura, but the other people on the team are nudging him toward trying to learn from nagai. in the dreams' game in this volume, nagai was a Big Deal on the court, but since takahashi was so focused on fujikura we never found out why. nagai and takahashi are probably the same point class and i'm still waiting for that to come up.
while i'm obsessing over side characters i like aoki a lot. did we ever learn his first name?
ough. One More Volume and then i'm caught up. i am not ready for this
