Writer in the Dark - Spencer Reid

hello and happy weekend!  these are out of order because I've been catching up with some other songs I've added to my playlist since I've started this blog.  anyways, this one is inspired by Writer in the Dark by Lorde.  this is also coincidentally my favorite song by her, so enjoy!

One day, on a crisp and cool day in November of 2009, Spencer Reid walked into a bookstore that would soon change his entire life.  It was a bookstore that had been up the street from his apartment for years, but he had never made his way to it until now.  His eyes scanned through the many aisles and the second floor, which was a visible loft, with a content grin on his lips.

As he browsed the many aisles, his eyes landed on you.  You stood there, in the biography section, dressed in a pale pink dress that was a little too big for you, but was still made you look absolutely beautiful.  You were placing new books onto the shelves, and you had yet to notice him, or so he thought.  

He didn’t realize that you noticed him when he had entered the store.  Messy curly hair, buttoned cardigan, content smile and all.  He was a lot like most of the men who came into the bookstore.  A scholar, without a doubt.

His face reddened at just the sight of you and he moved quickly, four books in his arms, towards the checkout.  As he walked along the wall towards the large desk with the old register, his eyes fell on a cork board with a quote written in a beautifully messy font on a ripped sheet of notebook paper. 

Doubt thou the stars are fire; Doubt thou that the sun doth move; Doubt truth to be a liar; But never doubt I love.

Spencer’s lips turned up in a small smile as he reached down, digging a pen from his bag and writing below the quote.

Thine evermore, most dear lady, whilst this machine is to him.

With a small and happy smile playing on his lips, he turned back towards the checkout and his eyes landed on you as you walked to the desk and placing a large stack of books on it.  “Hello,” you greeted in a gentle and quiet voice as you gave him a warm smile.   Your eyes were bright, and so innocent, and he thought you were one of the kindest looking people he had ever seen.  “Find what you were looking for?”  You asked him as you held your hand out to take them. 

Spencer’s eyes darted down to your hand, and slowly, he nodded and handed you the small stack.  “Truthfully, I wasn’t looking for anything,” he answered with a slightly nervous smile. 

You laughed.  It was a genuine, happy laugh, and Spencer wanted nothing more than to hear it more.  “I know the feeling,” you replied and began to ring him up. Your eyes scanned the books with a fond look.  “You’ve got quite the collection here.  I assume you’re studying for something?”  You continued to speak so friendly.  Spencer’s mind wandered to the fact that this friendly nature was the typical attributes to the victims he saw in his line of work. 

The thought made his heart drop to his stomach.  “No, actually.  I am just reading these for pleasure,” he explained with the most even voice he could manage. “What’s your name?”

“(Y/N),” you answered with a small smile.  “What do I get to call you?” 

Spencer's mind wandered with a million different options he could say, but simply answered, “Spencer.”  No doctor, no last name, just Spencer.  

You repeated his name then, like you trying to draw a connection to something. “Spencer, like Spenser from Robert B. Parker’s detective novels,” you answered with a crooked smile on our lips.  “You’re not a detective to, are you?”  You asked as you then followed with his total for the books.  

Spencer handed you the money as his cheeks felt warm.  “No, not quite,” he said softly with a gentle smile on his lips. 

You laughed again, and Spencer felt his own heart rate speed up at the sound.  “I always found Spenser, in the novels, to be rather secretive, as well,” you murmured as you placed Spencer’s books in a paper bag and pushed them across the counter to him.  “Stop in again, yeah?”  You asked as you took your own stack of books into your arms again, gave him one final smile, and walked back into the aisles of books, leaving him to his thoughts.

He stared for a moment, at the tall brown paper bag, and smiled lightly, gathering it into his own arms and left, not before glancing at one more at the writing on the cork board.

Just short a month later, Spencer came into the bookstore again.  His mind often thought of you during the last few weeks, your smile, witty words, the relation of his name to a book series, and especially your laugh.  All of it crowded his mind.  

As he stepped into the store, there were a few other patrons, but his eyes scanned around the store for you.  Much to his dismay, his eyes didn’t find you.  Nonetheless, he browsed the store, picking up a mother four books.  As he walked towards the register, where an elderly lady was checking out a line of customers, Spencer paused in front of the cork board again.  There it was again - the messy handwriting on the ripped sheet of notebook paper.

When he looked into her eyes, he learned the most important part of the language that all the world spoke — the language that everyone on Earth was capable of understanding in their heart. It was love.

Spencer’s mind immediately drew the connection.  Again, he dug in his bag for a pen and wrote beneath it. 

Something older than humanity, more ancient than the desert. What the boy felt at that moment was that he was in the presence of the only woman in his life, and that, with no need for words, she recognized the same thing. 

Once he finished, he capped his pen, and was about to walk away when a voice behind him spoke, “Because when you know the language, it’s easy to understand that someone in the world awaits you, whether it’s in the middle of the desert or in some great city.”  Spencer turned, knowing that voice and with rather excited eyes, he saw you standing behind him, one book in hand.  Your smile was soft, sweet, and your face was as innocent as they come. 

Spencer licked his lips briefly, and replied, “And when two such people encounter each other, the past and the future become unimportant.”  His smile was undeniable, and quite honestly, neither of you paid any attention to your surroundings as you stared at one another, refusing to break eye contact. 

“There is only that moment, and the incredible certainty that everything under the sun has been written by one hand only.”  You murmured and stepped forward, closer to Spencer. 

Spencer took a step forward as well, so that you were a mere foot away from one another. “It is the hand that evokes love, and creates a twin soul for every person in the world.”  His voice was as even as ever, as surprising as that was, being around you. 

Your smile grew slightly, and your spoke without skipping a beat, “Without such love, one’s dreams would have no meaning.”  You finished the passage, your hands still gripping the book in your hand and your eyes excited and almost sparkling.  

Spencer glanced down at the book in your hand, and he chuckled.  “The Alchemist,” he nodded to your hand.

“My favorite, for this reason exactly,” you explained as you motioned to the board.  “Surprisingly, not many people have been able to pinpoint this quote.  Its been up since you were in here last,” you added as your eyes searched his face.  Suddenly, your face reddened and you looked down.  “Not that I have been counting the days, or anything, but its been a while,” you tried to cover, but knew you were only digging yourself in a deeper hole.

He laughed.  It was light, joyful, and made you smile a bashful smile as you ducked your head down and looked at your feet.  “I originally read it in Portuguese,” Spencer told you as he fought the urge to talk far more to you.  “But reading it in English is what made it one of my favorites.

You looked up, impressed.  “Small world,” you laughed softly as Spencer looked confused.  “I originally read it in Portuguese, too,” you explained and held up the cop you had in your hand, which was indeed in Portuguese.  

Spencer raised his eyebrows, and smiled.  “You can read in more than one language?”  He asked incredulously. 

“Four, actually.  Working on five,” you said with a wide smile.

Spencer was in awe, to say the least.  You were witty, funny, educated, and could speak multiple languages?  You had to be some sort of dream of  his.  “Impressive,” he breathed out. 

You blushed and gave him a smile.  With a small breath, you began speaking, “Listen, if you're not busy tonight, there is a book signing up the road at the library you might be interested in.  Stephen King is in town,” you offered with a small, nervous smile.  “We could get coffee after.  It might be fun.”

For a moment, Spencer was quiet, weighing his options and calculating the rusk of going out with you tonight.  With a smile he couldn’t hide, he spoke, “Doubt thou the stars are fire; Doubt that the sun doth move; Doubt truth to be a liar; But never doubt I love,” he said without skipping a beat.

You giggle, knowing exactly that he was referring to the words you wrote on the cork board over a month ago, and you nodded.  “I’m taking that as a yes.  Meet you here at seven?”  You asked hopefully.  Spencer nodded, causing a small smile to only grow on your face more.

You nodded in return, turned away from Spencer and walked away quickly, up the stairs towards the loft, leaving him to watch after you.  His mind swirled with all he could imagine how the night could go, what could happen, but no matter what he thought of, it was going to be a wonderful night.

its 11:34 pm and tōru oikawa the “grand king” was still not in your bed with cuddles like he normally was. of course as his girlfriend of 1.5 years, you knew him and he knew you. so u called iwa.

“haji?” you question once the ace picks up after the second attempt of calling him. “is oiks there?” already dreading the answer.

“oh... hey,” you hear iwa say obviously mouthing something to someone near him. “uh- yeah. he is,” he admits with a sigh.

you quickly hang up, keys already in ur hand as u drive to aoba johsais gym. once you arrive iwa is standing by the door, a faint hearing of volleyballs being dribbled on the gym floor and a smack: tōru’s favorite serve. you nod at iwa telling him silently, ‘you can go ive got this. dont worry, im so beating his ass.’

as you storm inside you dont see ur confident, cocky, gorgeous boyfriend practicing serves as you thought you would. instead you see a shell of the man you know, someone staring at their hands seeming to bear the weight of the world on their shoulders frim their posture. as you see what was happening, him comparing himself to kageyama, all anger lf him overworking himself were long forgotten as you rush to him, hugging him as he let out a sob that wracked through his body.

“am i- am i just not good enough princess?” he asks, the chocolate haired setters normally clear eyes swarming with unshed tears. “wouldnt u like someone like iwa more?”

you shush the setter and hug him murmuring how much you love him, why you love him, and why u dint love anyone else.

by the end of the night in the car, oikawa driving, music is blasting, the two of you are singing along; until u yell out of the blue “GODDAMNIT TOORU NEVER EVER DO THAT AGAIN OK I LOVR YOU SO MUCH AND UR OVERWORKING URSELF AGAIN. I WILL MURDER U IF U KEEP DOING THAT.” as oikawa looks at you with admiration and fear in his eyes. “now keep ur eyes on the road goddamnit.”

and the two of you drove home to cuddle some more, conflict resolved.

Despite the appearances he puts up, Tobias is constantly questioning his worth to other people. Due to being given up or back multiple times up until later teenage years by people that decided they didn’t want him anymore he has never seen himself as good enough or being someone worth someone else’s love. (not to mention his fear of repeating family history despite never having actually met his birth parents. alongside not wanting to lose Peter, this is a major factor in his not wanting to grow up.)

What is something you’ve accomplished that you are proud of: I know it sounds odd but I am still thankful that I got through senior year of high school because it was a struggle. My grades were great - they always were - but school never came easy to me and especially not testing, specifically, and so most of my senior year was spent skipping 2nd period so I could cry in the bathroom. Don’t get me wrong; I had a nice, mundane, average high school experience - no bullying, little-to-no drama, and friends I loved to varying degrees but still very much enjoyed being with each day. I enjoyed high school, and I was that kid that enjoyed learning and enjoyed the challenge of advanced classes, for the most part. Just, some of the school aspect was a soul-sucking bitch that I just couldn’t handle properly those last few months.

【TRANS】 Singles March 2017 Issue – Interview

Your collaboration song ‘Nosedive’ with Dynamic Duo won 1st place on a music broadcast after occupying the music charts. This happened just yesterday. When I saw the article I was really surprised. Every 1st place is special, but the fact that it won 1st place without promoting it on broadcast once was really unusual. Dynamic Duo and Chen’s combination was honestly a little surprising. How did the work start? The first time I went to hang out at Gaeko hyung’s studio. Hyung and I talked about this and that. When I said that I listened to Dynamic Duo’s music while growing up, ‘Then what if we did a work together?’ came out. The fact that a song with ‘Dy-Du’ hyungs was announced. It was another one of my dreams come true. There seems to be a lot of people who received comfort from listening to this song. The thing I most worried about when singing the song was delivering the lyrics. I wanted to deliver the lyrics cleanly and purely more than focusing on emphasizing my voice. The contents matched well with the atmosphere of the music video. Dynamic Duo hyungs' faces or my face didn’t appear once. Just Ryu Bok-sung senior’s presence was more than enough to be cool. Last year you alone showed diverse and exuberant activities. EXO announced three albums as a group, and individually EXO-CBX did a drama OST. 2016 was a year where I came to have a lot of greed as a vocalist. Especially when promoting as EXO-CBX. It was to the extent of immediately talking about the next album after finishing promotions of ‘Hey Mama!’ with Xiumin and Baekhyun. I don’t know when the next song or comeback will happen, but the plan is still in motion. It is said that your OST ‘Everytime’ sung with Punch for Descendents of the Sun was a scene highlighter. I am thankful if you say it like that. But actually on the contrary, I watched the drama because of the actors. And through that song, many people got to know my voice. You also participated in the OSTs for It’s Okay, It’s Love and Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo. When you sing songs to be inserted into a drama, what do you focus on? When I participated in the OST for It’s Okay, It’s Love, I received a lot of help from D.O. I was looking for advice on how to sing the song so that it would match the drama. These days, I try to understand the message behind the music more than the drama or characters themselves. I’m not an actor, so I think it is right for me to approach it through music. If I sing the song honestly, I think that it will match the scene thoroughly. I heard that normally when singing songs, you have to deliver the lyrics and emotions carefully. These days, young singers seem to focus on technique or method. First of all, I want to sing through a way that I like and am good at. Because people listen to me singing the lyrics first when hearing songs, I want listeners to focus on the lyrics first. If the lyrics are delivered well, the emotions will turn out well, and in contrast if the emotions are well-filled, the lyrics will be delivered effectively. But that’s not to say that skills aren’t important. There are a lot of people who are lacking, so it is important to keep practicing. You are EXO’s main vocal, do you acknowledge that you as a vocalist exceed the team? I’m still far from that. I have never been satisfied when I listen to my recordings. There are so many people in the world who sing well. As a vocalist, what part of music do you want to strengthen? I’m weak at groove. There is a wide gap in ability when singing ballads versus singing R&B. On top of that, because we are on a team, it is clear to realize what each member’s strengths and weaknesses are. There must be some motivation among the members. It has been six years since debut. Now when we enter the recording studio, I can see how the members have improved in abilities. I can understand how much our experiences in recording thus far have helped us. Naturally, when it is my turn, I also want to try hard. There haven’t been too many opportunities for you to show your abilities as a vocalist in an OST or King of Mask Singer, for a member in a performance group. Do you feel a thirst for singing? After promoting as a team, all the individual activities and time to promote oneself takes the same amount of time. I sing all the songs I want to sing individually in the practice room. So there is a solution to some extent. My ultimate goal is to sing a song that I have composed in a style that I like. What do you sing in the practice room lately? Beyonce’s ‘Hello’. It’s not a song that has come out recently, but I heard it by chance when driving a while ago. It’s high in a female key, but I wanted to sing it in a key that matches me because it’s a good song. I remember you recommended a song by Lucia and Epitone Project on a portal site’s music page. I try to keep it as open as possible when it comes to listening. I was adding indie songs to a playlist and came across a blossoming song. So I came to know the song ‘Are you going to love me for just one season like a flower?’ (T/N: listen here, such a nice song!) Are you saying that it’s possible to understand the feelings of a member of a boy group that is enjoying its peak popularity? I have… an analog sensitivity. I don’t go on SNS or Internet that much. I don’t have a special reason, but it just ended up like this. My friends tease me by saying that I’m technologically illiterate. Is it okay for you to be unaware of things that everyone else knows? I don’t really care that much. I seem to live in my own time. You’re your own self. I think that I have to have my own convictions. If I don’t, I will be trapped by many things and shaken. It is more comfortable to walk along a path that is certain for me. Honestly, that’s why I’m waiting a bit to write my own songs. My surroundings tell me to try different things to find what I want, but it seems fit for me to start after definitely figuring out what kind of music I want to do. I have the ease of “I’ll do it when it’s time”. I’ll do music for the rest of my life, anyway. Like a fruit, I trust that I’ll ripen with time. What has changed the most from before debut to now? Before, I was introverted and didn’t have confidence. I was nervous in front of people and didn’t speak well, but that has changed a lot with promotions. They call you and Xiumin ‘Kim Brothers’ among the EXO members. You have acknowledged that you have a close relationship, but when do you feel that Xiumin knows you too well? Hyung knows everything I like and don’t like. So when we go around, he prepares for the things I like and tries to avoid the things I don’t like. Sometimes his dedication feels like he’s my manager. Of course he’s comfortable with me… but he naturally understands people. I get goosebumps when he’s accurately aware of things about the other members that I had never known until now. Xiumin has said that he wants to emulate your professionalism. But there hasn’t been a time when you showed a deficient appearance. Aren’t there times when you’re scattered due to a busy schedule? Sometimes I show a naive appearance or catch myself making mistakes. I don’t like being embarrassed on stage. I don’t go on the Internet, but I definitely monitor my stages. In earlier times, I would feel guilty for a small mistake, but now I don’t have a lingering attachment to past issues. There is no end to the list of records that EXO has achieved domestically. EXO is six years old, but what is one thing that you are still dumbfounded at and can’t believe? Four consecutive years of receiving a Daesang! It’s not easy to receive a Daesang once in your life, but the fact that we have received it four times, it is a thankful and amazing thing. If you hadn’t debuted as EXO’s Chen, what would you be doing now? I’m often curious about that too. Um, I originally wanted to major in practical music. If I had studied music, I would probably be preparing to be a trainer or teacher? I would like it if listeners would enjoy music as much as I release stress through singing.
