Why is Victoria BC so expensive?
On Reddit, a user asked:
Why is Victoria BC so expensive? I'm in my early 30s and have lived in Victoria most of my life. I briefly lived in the GTA and Vancouver when I was younger. I visit both Vancouver and Toronto often. When I go to those cities I get why it's so expensive. Both have large city amenities ( concerts, professional sports teams, great food from many cultures) etc. I support my family of 4 on about 130k and we are doing ok however this is a pretty quiet and small place. Don't get me wrong, the weather is better than most of Canada, and it's a safe place to raise a family but I sometimes wonder if this is just an expensive place for the fact it's a great place to retire. Rent is basically on par with Vancouver and Toronto and housing a slightly cheaper but not by much. It's like paying big city bucks for a boring quiet place. If I did not have my roots here and extended family to help us with the kids I would be long gone. Am I missing something? What is the reason this place is so expensive lol? I much rather live in Toronto or Vancouver personally.
The most popular responses were:
"The weather and nearby scenery etc. I have family there and I love visiting. Where else in Canada can you mix in a round of golf in the “winter”?"
"It's expensive because everyone wants to live there. It's a beautiful city with the best climate in the entire country."
"Most importantly people want to retire there. And retirees have a lot more money than most of us."

Three Roman Graves Uncovered in Portugal
Three burials dating to the 5th or 6th century AD have been unearthed in the ancient Roman city of Ossónoba in Faro, southern Portugal.
The Ossónoba’s first archaeological evidence dates back to the 4th century B.C., when the Phoenicians settled in the Western Mediterranean. The city was then called Ossónoba From the 2nd century B.C. until the 8th A.D. the city was under Roman and Visigoth dominance being afterwards conquered by the Muslims in 713.
A team of archaeologists from ERA Arqueologia discovered ancient Roman structures and the remains of a man, woman, and child while conducting excavations over a 5,000 square meter area that will eventually house a real estate development.
The excavations, which took place before a construction project, revealed the grave of a man whose skeleton was complete and who would have been between 39 and 45 years old, as well as a young woman under the age of 25, and a baby who would have been no more than six months old, according to archaeologist Francisco Correa.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Francisco Correia, the project’s head archaeologist, said in a statement that the discoveries were made in an old truck repair workshop and are believed to date from the 5th or 6th century.
The tombs appear to have been looted in the past to steal “small bracelets, necklaces, and rings,” according to anthropologist Cláudia Maio. The tombs indicate that the people may have had “some economic status” as they were not simply placed in open graves but instead buried in carefully built graves.
The proximity of the three people’s graves seems to indicate that they were family members, though the team cannot be certain of that. “But we cannot say anything for sure,” the anthropologist said.
To learn more, the researchers hope to be able to provide more precise answers through DNA tests and isotopic analysis techniques used to determine population movements and dietary habits from chemical traces in ancient human remains.
This latest archaeological discovery did not come as a surprise to archaeologists, who had already led similar works which resulted in the discovery of a Roman game artifact believed to date back to the first century AD in 2020.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“We know that we are in an area with archaeological potential where there is a 17th-century convent (of Santo António dos Capuchos) to the west, and to the east lies the area where the mosaic of the Ocean God (Deus Oceano), now a national treasure, was found,” he said.
What did come as a surprise to archaeologists was the location of the tombs.
“Based on previous studies, this would have been an area that was possibly residential or more linked to industrial activities. There are many traces of salterns. Largo da Madalena would have been the entrance to the urban area of the city of Ossónoba. The identified graves are in the Figuras area, near Teatro Lethes, close to the Ermida de São Sebastião and the Pavilion of Escola D. Afonso III. This area is almost within the urban fabric,” the archaeologist explained, adding that this illustrates both the “growth and decline of Ossónoba.”
The graves of the man and the woman “were sealed with limestone slabs,” believed to be reused parts from “some of the most emblematic buildings that would have been here in the area,” he believes.
According to the project manager of ERA Arqueologia, who was co-responsible for the work, in addition to the graves, hundreds of small pieces were also discovered which suggest that there may also have been a mosaic there.
The researchers also recovered Roman artifacts in the area, including ceramics, bone dice, nails, pins, a spoon, possible evidence of a dye factory, and coins minted during the reign of Constantine the Great, between A.D. 306 and 337.

Buying a home in the Toronto area has long been completely out of the question for most who live here thanks to real estate prices skyrocketing ever further beyond what anyone can afford on a typical income, but rentals are quickly catching up, too, not just in the city but across Ontario.
As not just owning, but also leasing becomes progressively less tenable and forces people to consider leaving the province, new data puts into perspective just how bad the situation has gotten over the last few years, even for those who have accepted that they will be tenants forever.
The Canadian Rental Housing Index released by the B.C. Non-Profit Housing Association on Monday outlines how rent prices have escalated in each part of the nation from 2016 to 2021, and the findings are jarring.
The assessment, which examined rent prices, income levels, density, and housing quality across locations and demographics, indicates "a staggering increase in rental costs and significant housing challenges faced by renter households across the country" on top of "a number of other worrying affordability trends." Canada to be Short 3.45 Million Homes by 2030
Blog/Real Estate
Posted Oct 2, 2023 by Martin Armstrong
The demand for housing in Canada drastically outweighs the supply. The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) has confirmed that fewer new builds are expected for 2024. In fact, the agency anticipates that Canada will be short by 3.45 million homes by 2030 – right on time. Better yet, the gap is certain to widen if/when Canada expands its immigration policies.
The CMHC expected Canada to build 18.58 million new dwellings by 2030 but recently revised that estimate down to 18.19 million. Ontario has the largest current supply gap with a deficit of 1.46 million homes. Nova Scotia, Quebec, B.C., and Alberta experienced a notable decrease in supply compared to last year’s projections. Despite Canadians having nowhere to call home, Trudeau plans to open the border to 500,000 immigrants by 2025.
youtube
“This report again highlights the crucial role of increasing housing supply if the goal is to make housing affordable for everyone in Canada. It also demonstrates the importance of examining both economic and demographic variables given the recent changes that have been experienced in both,” Aled ab Iorwerth, deputy chief economist at CMHC, said in the report. The CMHC also admitted that the supply gap will widen if immigration persists.
Therefore, expect Trudeau to extend his current immigration policies. This is precisely what is needed for the government to take over and create 15-minute cities to solve the crisis they created. It is all spelled out on the United Nations website. As you can see in the video below, people want to do the right thing by housing the homeless, but that is not financially possible and avoids the core issue. When there are encampments throughout the nation, the people will be less reluctant to deny government assistance. Government assistance equates to using tax dollars to subsidize housing for others, which will make it increasingly hard for those barely getting by. In comes 15-minute cities with free transportation and that affordable housing everyone has wished to see, yet it will only be affordable because you will be renting from the elite indefinitely. You will own NOTHING.

B.C. government seeks to seize properties allegedly linked to $165-million stock fraud
B.C. Civil Forfeiture Office alleges a $1.6-million house on Mission Ridge Road in Kelowna and a $524,000 condo at nearby Big White ski resort are the proceeds of crime
Tumblr media
The B.C. government is suing to seize properties in the B.C. Interior that it alleges were linked to a $200-million-plus international stock fraud.
In a lawsuit filed in B.C. Supreme Court this month, the B.C. Civil Forfeiture Office alleges a $1.6-million house on Mission Ridge Road in Kelowna and a $524,000 condo at nearby Big White ski resort are proceeds of crime and should be forfeited.
The properties are owned by Cuatro Cienagas Inversiones Ltd., incorporated in Hong Kong in January 2017 and registered in B.C. three months later as an extraprovincial company.
Named in the suit are Benjamin Thomas Kirk; Kayley Tyne Johnson, the current or former spouse of Kirk; and Carlos Gomez Brana. Kirk and Johnson’s last known address was at the Mission Ridge home and Brana is believed to live in Mexico.
None of the defendants has responded to the civil lawsuit. It contains allegations that have not been proven in court.
Among the allegations of unlawful activity against the trio are breaches of the U.S. Securities Act and the B.C. Securities Act, possession of proceeds of crime, fraud, manipulating stock prices, laundering money and tax evasion, according to court documents.
The forfeiture office alleges that Cuatro Cienagas Inversiones is owned and operated by one or more of Kirk, Johnson and Brana and was set up in B.C. to receive and distribute money from a stock fraud investigated by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
In the fall of 2018, the SEC said it halted the penny stock fraud scheme by freezing assets of two individuals, including a British citizen, Roger Knox, and their companies.
The SEC said the scheme generated more than US$165 million in illegal sales of shares of at least 50 micro-cap companies, those with a value of $50 million to $300 million. Knox, and his Swiss-firm Wintercap SA, formerly Silverton SA, concealed stock ownership, allowing stocks to be pumped up in price and dumped for a profit, according to the SEC.
Knox faces criminal charges in the United States for the scheme.
The SEC’s complaint alleges Michael T. Gastauer aided the fraud by establishing several U.S. companies, including virtual financial firms, and allowing Knox to use the bank accounts to disburse the proceeds of his illegal stock sales.
According to the forfeiture office’s court filings, proceeds from the scheme were transferred to or on behalf of one or more of Cuatro Cienagas Inversiones, Kirk, Johnson and Brana.
Cuatro Cienagas then used that money to buy the properties in the Interior, according to the civil forfeiture office’s claim.
On March 22, 2017, Cuatro Cienagas used accounts set up by Gastauer to transfer $101,000 to Norwich Real Estate Services Inc. in Kelowna. On May 10 and 11, another $1.529 million was transferred in three instalments to an unnamed Kelowna law firm.
On May 18, Cuatro Cienagas bought the Mission Ridge home for $1.6 million in cash.
From May 30 to Oct. 23, 2017, Cuatro Cienagas transferred in three instalments $250,500 to a Bank of Montreal account. In December, Cuatro Cienagas also directed the Swiss firm, formerly known as Silverton, to transfer in three instalments $548,000 from another Bank of Montreal account to the unnamed Kelowna law firm.
On Jan. 10, 2018, Cuatro Cienagas bought the condo at Big White ski hill.
The unnamed law firm acted as Cuatro’s lawyer in the property purchases, according to the court filings.
According to the civil claim, Kirk was charged in 2013 of violations of the U.S. Securities Act. In 2015, Kirk admitted to breaches of the Alberta Securities Act and agreed to pay a fine of $100,000.

Virtual Assistance Career
Thursday, March 14th, 2024
I used to have low self esteem as I was bullied when I was in Grade 2. But this has changed ever since I began my career as a virtual assistant.
I started from scratch. With only my vast educational history and my previous employment as the assistant manager of our family owned business, I was very lucky enough that clients hired me on Elance. That was in January 2008. Only after a month of job searching, I got hired by a client based in New Zealand for a data entry project. I believe after two months, I got hired as a Support Coordinator for an IT Consulting Company based in Cranberra, Australia and as a Marketing and Distribution Representative by documentary film directors based in Sydney, Australia. I believe my clients who hired me when I was just a newbie in the freelancing world saw the potential in me and believed that I will be a valuable asset to their companies.
In January 2013, I applied for virtual assistance certification with a virtual assistance certification company based in Surrey, Vancouver, B.C. CANADA (VAcertified) and my application was approved in August 2013. I was granted the title VAcertified. I have been working as a virtual assistant for 16 1/2 years.
To those who want to be a part of the virtual assistance world, may I suggest that you take up a virtual assistance course and decide which niche you would like to specialize in.
I specialize in Administrative Support and Customer Service, however, I can also do Data Entry (this is my forte), Lead Generation, Market Research, Real Estate Virtual Assistance, Content and Creative Writing, and Social Media Advertising. I’m a “Jill of All Trades”. What more can you ask for? I plan to study Amazon Product Researcher, Bookkeeping, and Accounting. I have a never ending love for learning!
If you’re interested in hiring me, send me an email at [email protected] and I will respond within one business day.
Thank you in advance for your interest in hiring me and have an amazing afternoon!

British Columbia is expanding the tax it created to clamp down on real estate speculation and ensure homes in rental-strapped communities don’t sit empty.
A statement from the Ministry of Finance says the Speculation and Vacancy Tax now includes the municipalities of North Cowichan, Duncan, Ladysmith, Lake Cowichan, Lions Bay and Squamish.
Starting early next year, homeowners in those areas will join owners in 40 other B.C. cities, districts and towns who are required to declare how their property was used in 2023.
The statement says 99 per cent of people who live in B.C., can expect to be exempt for the 2023 tax year, but homeowners in the new municipalities, along with those already covered by the tax, must make formal declarations in the new year.
