1998 Birmingham - Number 12 - B.I.G. - "Ingen annan väg"

What do you get if you cross the anthemic Beatles worship of Oasis with something far more clean-cut and Melfest friendly? Why B.I.G. of course! It doesn't get b.i.g.ger that B.I.G. They are a band formed in 1996 from the ashes of several previous bands. Led by Peo Thyrén (previously of Noice) they entered Melodifestivalen 1997 and came fifth, but still had a hit single with that song.

They're back in 1999 with Ingen annan väg (No Other Way). It is a simple singalong pop-rock song, here orchestrated with rich strings. The lyrics suggest a vague but uplifting number, celebrating the delights of knuckling down and getting on with it. There's a guiding star, a single path to walk down, a destination in the distance. It'll all be worth it in the end. What's that? You're telling me this is religious?!

Yes. B.I.G. or Brothers in God to give them their full name have harnessed stadium pleasing pop-rock to push generalised uplifting messages to their large audience and promote religion. It doesn't sound nearly so churchy as some other less religious songs in Eurovision, but there we are. It's all highly inoffensive. In fact it's kind of hummable. Look, you caught me humming it.

This was hummable enough to finish second in Melodifestivalen. It wasn't particularly close to winning, but it was well clear of third. Sweden liked it and they liked B.I.G. enough for them to release another four albums and several singles over the next four years or so. Ultimately they split up. Peo went back to Noice to play bass and everything went back to how it was before. All that remained were the earworms.
