The Big Ten as Westerosi Houses

The Big Ten welcomed its four new members with an updated version of their infamous map commercial, which is a riff on the opening credits of Game of Thrones.  While some schools do not have much history with the century old membership, there are some similarities with the great houses of Westeros.  Below are associations of each football program in relation to the families and groups in George R. R. Martin’s fiction. 

The better version with actual stadiums:

Purdue – House Strong of Harrenhall

The idea of the Big Ten was first initiated in West Lafayette.  Harrenhall was the first large fortress before the Conquest. 

Illinois – House Tully of Riverrun

Lord of the Mississippi, Ohio and Illinois Riverlands.  Descendants of the First Men and the Andals.  

Northwestern – House Frey of the Twins

The Freys resent their overlords in the Riverlands.  Like to tax crossings in Chicago, even though alumni from Illinois outnumber them. Established in 1851 to serve the historic The Northwest Territory in the Neck.

Wisconsin – House Stark of Winterfell

The First Men who won a Big Ten Championship in 1896.

Minnesota – House Bolton of the Dreadfort

It is said that the enmity between Houses Stark and Bolton goes back to the Long Night since Minnesota and those badgers have the longest football rivalry in the nation. 

Michigan – House Lanaster of Casterly Rock

Think they should be Hand of the King and run the Conference as Golden Maize and Blue.

Iowa – House Arryn of the Eyrie

Birds of a feather should flock together.

Indiana – House Velayron of Driftmark

Once proud house whose exploits are better known in the seas called basketball. 

Ohio State – House Targaryen of  King’s Landing

Dominated the Conference since their Conquest and the Ten Years War with Woody Hayes. 

Michigan State – House Greyjoy of the Iron Islands

They do not sow.  Love to pillage on the west coast of Michigan. 

Penn State – House Baratheon of Storm’s End

Thought they would be king when joining in 1994. 

Nebraska – Night’s Watch as Castle Black

The Blackshirt Defense mans the Wall in Lincoln.

Rutgers – House Tyrell of Highgarden

Relatively new lords in the prosperous Reach of New Jersey and York

Maryland – House Hightower at Oldtown

Proximity to the old capital.  Their seal even looks like the globes at the Citadel.

USC – House Martell of Sunspear

Westeros rotated 90 degrees is the size of the USA, thus Dorne is California.

UCLA – House Dayne of Starfall

The Sword of the Morning was forged where a meteor named Lew Alcindor landed. 

Washington – House Mormont of Bear Island

The Pacific Northwest is akin to Bear Island, Longcraw’s pommel was changed to a Huskie. 

Oregon – the Free Folk at Hardhome

Our last addition to the conference is a wilding invasion.

Lovers & Strangers - Chapter 26

As the summer went on Ethan and I had very limited communication. I did cry some nights about it but everything that happened on nights I felt alone. The next time I was forced to see Ethan was when our families decided to go to Kelowna together. This time it was just Ethan and I’s family along with Denise, Will and the kids. 

The whole time in Kelowna, it was like a switch flipped in him. He acted so differently than the last time. The first day was a little weird but the next morning I was forced to sit beside him during breakfast, he acted fine. After breakfast, I headed back to my room to put on my bathing suit. I put on Mark’s B1G champs t-shirt before making my way out to the kitchen to help the girls put their sunscreen on. 

After we are already to go we made our way down to the boat where the Edwards family along with the rest of my family and Will was waiting for Denise, the girls and I. We hop on the boat and I am forced to sit beside Ethan again. 

“Can we talk later?” Ethan asks me and I nod awkwardly before looking away, “We don’t have to”

“No, I want you” I say to him faking a smile

“Do you guys kiss?” Riley asks Ethan, making Brett laugh hard beside Ethan, “What?” Riley asks looking at Brett now

“You are one big shit disturber kid” Brett laughs and Riley grins

Ethan and I look at each other and awkwardly smile before looking away. The boat stops and we all drink as we let the boat just float. 

“So, are you two excited to go back to Michigan?” Will asks Ethan and I

“Yeah, excited to be back with the team” Ethan says and everyone continues to talk about Ethan’s hockey and then Brett’s hockey. 

I look over at Denise and she pats the seat beside her. “Tell me about your roommates this year” she says to me smiling, knowing I feel like the unimportant sibling to two brothers who aren’t even my brothers.

“Yeah, I’m rooming with my best friends this year; Nicole, Cassidy, Khloe, and Savannah”

“That’s so exciting!” She says, “What about your old roommates?”

“Ew” I say and Denise laughs

“And how is Mark?”

“Still going strong” I smile. I see Ethan shift uncomfortably across from me, obviously he heard. 

Later that night, I went back into my room and shut my door. I hear a knock on my door seconds after I walked away from it and I yell out that it is open. Ethan walks through the door, and I take a seat on the bed, “You hear to talk?” I ask and he nods, taking a seat across the room from me.

“I just wanted to apologize”

“Oh what else do you regret?” I say to him rolling my eyes

“I regret saying I regret everything” he says taking a breath, “I thought it would be easier to get over you if I broke your heart. In the long run I guess I broke my own because that allowed you to love Mark more”

“Ethan, can we please just be friends?”

“Y/n, I need you to know that I still love you” he says standing up, “and I take back what I said in the spring, I will always catch you when you fall. If being your friend is what keeps me in your life, then I’ll be your friend”

He walked out before letting me say anything, but I was shocked. 

A couple weeks later we ended up going back to Michigan and it was almost like nothing happened. He started dating a new girl, Sophie, during our first week back in Michigan. I wanted to like her, but I couldn’t. Ethan asked if she could come with us to the Football game and the after party so of course I said yeah. 

As we were pregaming at my house, he began talking about our boyfriends and soon our sex lives. I kept my mouth shut as having Sophie here felt like having a mole in the room. “So Sophie, spill. How is Ethan?” Nicole says, I cough uncomfortably 

“You don’t have to answer” Savannah says for my sake

“Oh I don’t mind” she starts and my teeth begin to grind, “We only have once”

“Once?!” Nicole says

“Don’t make her feel bad” Khloe says

“Excuse me” I say standing up and leaving the room. I make my way up to my room and begin tearring the pictures of my and Ethan off my wall. I don’t even know why I am so upset, he should be able to do whatever he wants since I’m with Mark. I rip the pictures, throwing them all out until I came across one picture that always makes me smile. The picture was Ethan and I as toddlers kissing. Ethan has the same picture in his wallet. I put the picture on my desk, unable to rip it. 

I open my closet and pull out a bottle of vodka from my stash I hid, so Mark can’t see it. I’m not really supposed to be drinking, only under my parents supervision or Mark’s because my parents trust him. I down as much of the vodka as possible until my body feels numb. I forgot the greatness that comes with feeling numb.

I make my way down the stairs as there was a knock on the front door. I open the door for Ethan, Mark, Frank, Dylan, and Gavin. Mark wraps his arms around me and presses his lips on mine before quickly pulling away. He looks at me almost with a hurt expression on his face. 

“Are you drunk?”

“Wouldn’t you like to know” I say walking away from him and he follows behind me sitting beside me on the couch. 

“How much have you had to drink?” Mark says

“Stop killing my vibe Mark”

“Should we go to the party now?” Savannah says and everyone agrees as we make our way out of our house and begin walking to the party. Mark reaches and grabs my hand. 

“I’m sorry, I just worry about you” Mark says to me and I smile at him

“You shouldn’t”

“I know-”

“Did you know Ethan and Sophie have had sex?” I ask Mark and Ethan turns around from in front of me and Mark coughs, clearing his throat. 

“Um- yeah y/n, they are dating” Mark says and I stop him

“Why haven’t we fucked since we’ve been back?”

“We have”

“Yeah like once”

“A day”

“But I want more”

“Let’s just get to the party” Mark says, grabbing my hand. 

We continue following the group to the party and I sneak away from the group as Mark and Ethan are talking about something and make my way around the house to find booze. Nicole catches up to me and smirks at me

“Help me look for booze”

“Of course, so glad my partner in crime is back” She says handing me a cooler she has in her hand, “Oh, I was hanging out with Caleb over the summer”

“What?”

“Yeah, He wanted me to tell you how sorry he was”

“He isn’t here is he?” I say and my breathing becomes heavier and heavier

“No, you’re okay!” she says, “here” she cracks the can open and hands the cooler back, “drink”. 

“Is she okay?” Cassidy says

“Get Mark” Nicole says as I begin to cry

Cassidy leaves and Nicole rubs my leg. “He isn’t here” she tries to reassure me, “take my arm let's go outside” she says holding her arm out. 

As we make our way to the front I see Mark pushing people out of his way to get to me as fast as he can, “Hey, what’s wrong?”

“Mark” I say, wrapping my arms around him and he hugs me tighter. 

“I brought up Caleb and she just started having this panic attack”

“Hey, he isn’t here” he says pressing his lips in my hair kissing me, “he knows better”

“Mark, take me home” I say and he nods

“Let’s go”

Mark takes me home and helps me get undressed and ready for bed. I lay on the bed and Mark began to leave the room, “You’re leaving?”

“No, I’m going to get you some water. I’ll be right back”

“I don’t want water. I want you”

Mark takes his shirt and pants off leaving him in just his boxers as he slides in bed beside me, I start to cry and he pulls me into his chest. “I’m sorry Mark”

“Why?”

“I kissed Ethan in Tampa” I say and Mark doesn’t say anything. “Mark?”

“I heard you”

“Are you mad? Please don’t because I only love you. I would marry you Mark. You just keep proving that you are the best option for me. I know exactly how you felt when you said you couldn’t live without me”

“How long will that last though? Until Ethan gives you attention again?” Mark says

“No, because he tried and I didn’t fall for it”

“Go to bed”

“No I can’t. Not when you are mad at me. Mark please just tell me why you love me”

“Everything about you Y/n” he starts, “I should be so fucking mad at you right now, but I see too much good in you”

“Than ask me to marry you”

“You’re drunk Y/n” he says chuckling

“You don’t want to marry me?” I ask him, “nothing about us is normal, let’s just get married”

Mark sighs and stands from the bed then walks over to my keychain on my lanyard snapping it off putting the ring on my desk before adding the keychain to another ring attached to the lanyard before grabbing the steel keychain ring and sitting on the bed. 

“Y/F/n” he says and I smile, “will you marry me?” He continues holding up the keychain ring. 

“Of course” I smile and he adjusts the ring so it is stretched out enough to comfortably fit on my finger.
