Playdate season 1 - week 12

My first season of games comes to an end! A couple of thoughts:

1) Every game on this system saves automatically, invisibly, and exactly where you want it to. Immaculate. No notes.

2) The seasonal model is delightful, and it only works because the games are quite compact. Unlike the monthly AAA release model on PS Plus or the steady trickle of games on the other subscription services, this isn’t blasting you with content you don’t have a hope in hell of even touching. Two games per week is just enough to give a bit of choice but not make you feel like you’re paralysed by the options. It actually feels like the glory days of the Vita where you’d get one nice indie game per month on PS Plus and have plenty of time to really dig in to it.

3) I’m nowhere near done playing or writing about these. I’ll continue to post as I finish - or finish with - particular games.

So, here’s the last couple of releases. Spoilers!

b360: the “b” stands for “Breakout”: it’s a circular block breaker from Panic themselves. There’s a really quirky arcade-style framing device about you being on a space ship destroying asteroids. Going to dig in to this some more later.

The Ratcheteer seems to be a top down adventure in the style of Zelda: A Link to the Past with really chunky graphics. It’s a nice bookend to go with the first week’s Casual Birder. One of those games I’m going to set aside some evenings to do in its totality.

might be a bit of a boring question but how do you feel about the Mazda b series? and if you have nothing to say about that one then I'd love to hear your thoughts on the tacoma

So thoughtful of you to give me a backup question, but worry not! If I've got nothing to say about a car, I will find it, goddamnit, if it'll take me two months! Which it very nearly did. Sorry. Anyhow! In reverse order of generations:

1. 5th

it would take state-backed effort to get me to care for -hell, care about- this last one, which did not excel in looks nor performance nor, from what I can tell, reliability nor comfort. It feels like it would be a very complex thought experiment to come up with the buyer this would be the best choice for, even in its time. (However, while the enthusiasts' metric of evaluation is competition, the owners' metric is their own expectations, so it is certain and valid and good that millions of owners were chuffed about their purchase and I love that for them and do not whatsoever seek to rain on their parade.)

2. 4th

Neat! Even beyond the spectacular decals, I just love Japanese pickups of this era (the ones yankees call "small pickups" and we call "pickups" because we don't have those useless fuck-off-gargantuan shit yankees love to pretend has any use). So much so that I want two of them. Neither are this (they're the Toyota Hilux and the Nissan D21), but objectively they're all about the same and my preferences are purely based on aesthetic minutiae.

3. 3rd

First I see of it! The front is kind of unfortunate, but it reminds me of the Yugo so it's on my good side. The rear taillights also have a kind of Soviet quality to them, I'm sure there's some -az car with rear lights just like those.

4. 2nd

HELL FUCKING YEAH *checks pronouns* SISTER! I love this thing. Especially the REPU, where PU stands for Pick Up and RE stands for...

Yep :D, this was the time when Mazda was shoving rotaries left and right into applications they were comically unsuited for absolutely no discernible reason, and we're all glad that they did, because Lord knows no one else had the lack of sense to do it.

Yes the ROTARY POWER* on the back of it is factory! *BITCHES

5. 1st

Yeah, this is at the edge of car period that excites me. Not that I think it looks bad or is bad or anything, it just starts to feel too... historic for me to connect to? I guess a Mazda pickup from the early '60s is just not for me.

It seems I guessed wrong.

This Ghibli-esque little thing is the 1959 Mazda K360, being a kei truck with the then maximum of 360cc of engine. It was a popular taxi (taxi!) in Myanmar...

...where it kept being produced until the early '70s, when it got replaced by the other other truck Mazda was making by the early '60s, the B360.

Wow I really was wrong there huh.

These were probably a sort of "Eastern Europe getting Fiat's scraps" kind of deal, since while these were manufactured in Myanmar from '72 to the mid-90s (mid-90s!), by 1972 Japan had already long been getting the B360's replacement i.e. the Mazda Porter, which OOOO0000°°°°°ººººº⁰⁰⁰⁰⁰⁰⁰ my GOOOOOODDDD

A pair of B-1 bombers flew over the North Sea on June 5, participating in a broad air exercise in the Nordic region.

As part of the Arctic Challenge Exercise 2023, the B-1s of Dyess Air Base, Texas, flew over the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford and integrated into the F-35 of the U.S. Air Force and the Royal Norwegian Air Force, as well as United States Navy Aircraft.

“The U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy routinely conduct operations in the Far North alongside Finnish, Swedish and Norwegian air forces and naval, and the Arctic Challenge provided enhanced opportunities for NATO allies and partners to integrate with U.S. strategic bombers and Ford aircraft carrier class in a new environment,” said a U.S. Air Forces press release in Europe.

The B-1s are in Europe as part of a deployment of the Bomber Task Force at the RAF Base in Fairford, United Kingdom. Since they arrived two weeks ago, the aviators and the aircraft have been busy. On May 23, a B-1 was intercepted by a Russian fighter in the Baltic Sea region. On May 30, a bomber flew over Bosnia and Herzegovina, in a demonstration of support amid the ongoing unrest in the area. And on June 1º, a B-1 integrated into the allied forces during a small strength exercise in France and Belgium.

His participation in the Arctic Exercise Challenge, however, marks his greatest training opportunity so far - and the first time American bombers have flown in the biennial exercise since it began in 2013.

In addition to the B-1, the U.S. Air Force is flying F-35 and F-15 from the 48ª Fighter Wing of Lakenheath RAF Base, UK, in the exercise, as well as KC-135 from the 100ª Air Refueling Wing of the RAF Base of Mildenhall, UK, and the Maine National Air Guard.

Sweden is leading the exercise, with aircraft also stationed in Norway and Finland. The USA, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Canada, France, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark and the Czech Republic sent personnel and aircraft.

"By training and performing realistic exercises in the Far North, such as the Arctic Challenge Exercise 2023, U.S. forces and allied and partner nations improve skills, adjust interoperability, nurture important relationships and adapt to the inherent challenges posed by the struggle in the extreme conditions of the Arctic," said a USAFE press release.

　世の中には面白いことを考える人がいるようで、このコッククロフト回路はn倍電圧が得られる不思議な整流方式です。図の上から順に、2倍電圧整流、3倍電圧整流、4倍電圧整流となっています。この調子で5倍、6倍・・・n倍整流が可能です。ただし、倍率が高くなるにつれて得られる出力電流は激減してゆきます。電流はほとんどいらないが高い電圧が欲しい、という時のために知っておくと便利です。

Netherlands selects AARGM-ER missiles for its F-35 fleet

The Dutch Ministry of Defense announced the decision to purchase AARGM-ER (Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile Extended Range) anti-radiation missiles, produced by U.S. defense giant Northrop Grumman, to equip its fleet of F-35 aircraft.

According to the Dutch Ministry of Defense, AARGM-ER missiles serve as a response to the growing A2/AD (Anti-Access/Area Denial) capabilities possessed by potential opponents, including sophisticated air defense systems. Without AARGM-ER missiles, engaging in such hostile territories would entail substantial risks, restricting the freedom of military operations.

"Improving the armament of the F-35 was a concrete objective outlined in last year's Defense White Paper. The newly acquired missiles, known as AARGM-ER, are supplied by the American manufacturer Northrop Grumman. This option was the only one that met all the requirements, leading the Dutch Ministry of Defense to acquire them through the United States government," the Dutch Ministry of Defense said in a statement.

By acquiring these AARGM-ER missiles, the Dutch Ministry of Defense not only gains a formidable and scarce capacity, but also addresses the shortage of anti-A2/AD ammunition in Europe. Training with the new ammunition and support systems will allow the F-35 to participate in innovative concepts of air operations on an international scale. This acquisition contributes to the innovative capacity of the Dutch Armed Forces.
