2. What's something about your OC that people wouldn't expect just from looking at them?

hmmm,,,, i think people would be surprised to find out how patient he is. his style is grungy and during retribution he purposefully made himself look off-putting/aggressive to discourage people interacting with him, but hes more tolerant of nonsense than he comes across. i mean,, you kind of have to be to be friends with ortega for as long as he has. its just that when he loses his patience, he loses his patience. oh, and i also think people wouldnt initially guess how flirty he is, but hes trained for that stuff! he knows hes pretty, and its an easy way to garner connections. hes the type to casually slip an innuendo into a sentence with a completely straight face and move on to leave the other person wondering if he meant it like That. again, another reason hes managed to live with ortega for so long.

10.What's an AU that would be interesting to explore with your OC?

my aus for cyrus, ceci, and cynthia: oooo wouldnt it be fun if i changed this or put them in that cute little scenario? haha!

my aus for caine: ok so how else do i psychologically torture this man.

there are. So many aus i have of him where every event is nearly the same up until a singular point that changes the trajectory of the rest of the story. but personally, im partial to the one where ortega doesnt find him in the diner, and instead they get discovered by chen during the dog park. its a Fuck ton of fun because it involves chen and caine building the most awkward camaraderie, chen lying to ortega even more (because you bet your ass caine would be begging him not to tell ortega that hes alive), and probably the worst way to reunite with your dead best friend: finding them walking out of your nemesis layer, getting them caught in a car crash, and having them be kidnapped before you get a chance to have a singular conversation with them. all three of them are having So much fun over there.

14. How does your OC want to be seen by other characters?

as both cecilia and lupin, shes always seen as friendly and a little untouchable, and thats exactly how she likes it. it makes it easier to talk to other people while giving herself a modicum of protection from anybody who might think to go against her. not to mention, being feared and loved at the same time is doing Wonders for her ego, and only encourages her to play more into the role that she cultivated for herself.

23. What emotion is the hardest for your OC to process? How about express?

oh definitely anger. on both counts. she was always taught that anger would land her in trouble, that it was too destructive of an emotion. in both the farm and hero work, it was discouraged. she well and truly doesnt know what to do with all the rage shes been given, so she just. represses it. maybe express it in the form of sadness, since that comes easier to her. heartbreak giving her the revenge scar dug up those feelings as a persistent itch, so when the good old fashion repression stops working, she turns the rage inwards. this is what healthy and moral people do, she is sure of it.

CELIA/CECILIA - A WAY WITH ANIMALS

You wanted to cry with frustration. Takakura and you were trying to catch the newest lamb. The terrified baby had an injured leg you were trying to treat. The mother didn’t help as she rammed your leg again when you were almost close enough to grab the lamb. 

“Can I help?” Cecilia’s voice called your attention to the fence line. She must have been passing on her way to the Goddess Spring and seen your struggles. 

“It’s okay. I’d hate for you to get hurt.” 

“Nonsense, we need to get the poor baby taken care of,” the young woman answered, climbing over the fence without care. You scrambled to assist her. Cecilia took only a moment to brush her skirt back into order before walking further into the field. You apprehensively lingered behind her as she knelt and spoke to the mama sheep. All too easily, the ewe walked forward to nuzzle into Ceci’s chest. The lamb weakly limped along after its mother to Cecilia’s side. 

“Here we go,” Cecilia proudly said, gathering the lamb to hold close. “Were you trying to go to the barn?” 

“Yeah,” you weakly replied, following after the brunette. With Cecilia’s help, Takakura and you managed to get the mom and baby into an isolation pen and provide treatment. Cecilia asked if she could visit them tomorrow before waving and resuming her day. You were puzzled. Why did the sheep trust her so quickly over Takakura and you, who cared for them daily? As you dump fresh water and feed into the pen, you ask Takakura. 

“Some people just have a way with animals,” the man shrugged in response.

CODY/GORDY - SPEAKING BACKWARD

“Desoporp t’nevah llits uoy?” the odd sounds from his sister turned your head. 

Gordy glanced at your confused expression before responding to his sister, “thgir neeb t’nsah gnimit eht. Tcefrep sgniht tnaw I.”

“Yrruh ot deen uoy! Ecein a tnaw I.” 

After their brief exchange, the two switched to speaking a language you could understand. You asked as soon as Gordy’s sister left what language they were speaking. When he explained it was the same language you spoke now, just backward, you couldn’t believe it. The man was patient as he repeated phrases you said backward without pause. Stunned by the unexpected skill, you asked how they learned to do it. Gordy laughed and explained it was their secret code to talk to each other without their parents knowing what it was about. 

“So, what were you talking about earlier?” 

“Just about how cute you are,” Gordy’s smile made you feel he wasn’t giving you the whole truth. 

You still haven’t proposed? 

The timing hasn’t been right. I want things perfect.

DARYL - ALWAYS KNOWS THE TIME & WHICH WAY IS NORTH

You had taken to hanging out at Daryl’s lab during your free afternoons. The scientist was surprisingly tolerant of your numerous questions. Though, you felt his patience didn’t extend to everyone in town. You were closely watching Daryl’s latest work when he spoke. 

“Didn’t you say you were meeting Takakura at 2:00 p.m. for a new animal’s arrival?”

“Yeah, why?” 

“It’s 1:57 p.m.” 

“That can’t be right,” you muttered, looking around for a clock. You grabbed a watch from your rucksack when you didn’t see one in the lab. You rarely had anything time-sensitive since moving to the valley. When the watch confirmed it was indeed the time you were meant to meet Takakura, you scrambled from the lab, throwing Daryl a quick farewell over your shoulder. 

A day later, Daryl visited your farm as you puzzled over one of your fields. The field was tilled and ready to plant, but you paused. You explained the issue to Daryl when he asked what you were doing. Vesta and Matthew recommended planting in north-to-south rows for winter when you bought seeds. Now that you were ready to plant, you didn’t know which way was what. The cloudy day didn’t help in figuring out north, and you didn’t have a compass. Without a pause, Daryl indicated which way to plant. 

“How do you do that?” 

“Do what?” the scientist frowned at your question.

“Know direction and the time off hand like that!”

Though he acted like it wasn’t a big deal, Daryl was pleased to have impressed you without trying.

FLORA - PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORY

With all the stress of a new farm, you were immensely grateful for Flora. Working in the mines with Flora helped to distract you from sitting around the farm, hoping your crops would grow. Her calmness and methodical ways greatly offset your panic and worries. During lunch, you would share the journals Takakura left to help you as you both learned about how to run a farm. 

You were excited for Flora to visit the farm. It was her day off, and you got your first sheep yesterday. You could barely contain your excitement in showing off the adorable, fluffy new animal. Flora found you in the field, biting your lip in apprehension. The poor new sheep had an odd spot missing from its wooly hide. 

“Do you need help?” the blonde interrupted your thoughts.

“I just think I used these wrong. Baa-b seemed upset the moment I started,” you explained. “I should recheck Takakura’s notes.” 

“How did you use them?” Flora watched you demonstrate what you did far from the shaken sheep. “Oh, here’s what you’re doing wrong.”

Your mouth dropped open in shock as Flora demonstrated the correct method, both with and without your sheep. She didn’t notice anything amiss until she turned from Baa-b to offer you the shears to try again. 

“How did you do that? I thought you didn’t know anything about animal care?” you questioned. 

“It was in Takakura’s notes we read,” Flora replied, confused by your questions. 

“That was weeks ago! How did you remember that?” 

“I have a photographic memory; I just need to see something once. It simplified classes and helped me get the job with Professor Carter.” 

Flora blushed as you raved about how phenomenal a gift her talent was.

MUFFY/MOLLY - ACTING

Molly and you had decided on a night in. You prepared everything for her arrival in meticulous detail. There were plenty of pillows, snacks, and movies of all sorts lined up to watch. The blonde giggled at your enthusiasm and assured you she felt the same when she arrived. At Molly’s insistence, you picked the first film. You settled for one of your childhood favorites to share with her. 

The movie was about a spunky orphan you had always admired as a kid. You settled into the pillows with Molly as the film began. Molly grew stiff beside you as the title scrawled across the screen and the movie opened. She looked uncomfortable with your movie choice. You offered to switch to a different film. 

“Oh no, darling, it’s fine. I’ve never seen it, and I would like to watch it with you,” with her smile and reassurance, you let the matter go, though you were worried. Did she hate this movie and lie so as not to upset you?  

You soon found yourself distracted from the movie. The spunky orphan looked so much like the woman sitting next to you. It was probably the blonde curls and green eyes, you reasoned. The combination wasn’t too uncommon, but the resemblance felt uncanny. No one knew what happened to the childhood prodigy actress in the film. As a teenager, she disappeared from the limelight and probably lived comfortably in a large house somewhere. You blinked at the screen as the credits rolled, and you recognized a name.

“That was you?” you spluttered, turning to Molly. 

“Well, yes,” Molly hesitated before explaining further. “Life behind the scenes was very different! The world of acting was negatively impacting my life. So, I-” 

“Hey, you don’t need to explain! I’m happy you quit. Otherwise, we’d never be here like this,” you smiled, kissing her.

Aww your baby is the CUTEST!!! And very smol indeed! I unfortunately don't have any pets :( i live with people who are very allergic to fur so i can't really have birds, dogs, cats, etc (meanwhile my boyfriend has 4 cats lol).

BUT!!! I used to have a cat back then, when i was very little. His name was Spike and he used to wake me up for school every morning after i adopted him 🤍 unfortunately i don't have any pics of him, they were all in my old computer that i couldn't save but his cute lil' face will always be in my heart and mind! 🥰

Falling like the Stars

Jace was organizing papers: putting them into specific categories. He accidentally cut his finger on the edge of a piece of paper.

Involuntarily, he said, "Ouch." 

His daughter, who had been coloring a picture for Clary, jerked her head up. "Who hurt you?" her sweet little voice asked in a fierce and protective tone.

It took him a moment to answer, he loved his baby so much and when she did things like this it made him want to fall to the floor. "No one, Celery. I just got a paper cut," he said, tears forming in his eyes. "But, you're so protective and I love you."

She smiled like the sun. "Love you, too, dada," she said. "Can I beat up the paper?"

He laughed. "You can't beat up paper."

"I can."

Yes, she has the stubbornness of both him and Clary, both their babies did.

"How about instead we go start dinner," he said, "I'm kinda done with this paperwork."

"Yay!" she was beaming.

Jace always included his children when he did things like cooking or baking or when he took care of the plants in the greenhouse. It allowed them to spend time together but also he wanted to teach them these things, to pass things onto them so they'll remember forever, and to share memories that they'll hold with them forever.

He also taught these things to his nieces and nephews.

"Alright," Jace said, pulling a stool up to the counter and picking his daughter up and placing her on it. "What do we want to have?"

"Mommy said she's been craving the chicken stir fry you make."

"Has she?" Clary had craved that a lot when she was pregnant with the twins, and even after having them still wanted it often. "Well, mommy has been out most of the day. Let's surprise her with dinner."

"I think she will love that."

Cecie had always been pronouncing words very well for her age, there were moments when Jace wondered if Clary and him had made a genius. Though, maybe every parent thought that. And then Archie had the artistic talent of his mother, Clary had included him in painting since it was safe to allow him to do so, and he was already drawing things very well.

They made dinner and by the time they were finished Clary was back and Archie was back from playing soccer with Max and Rafe. Clary tackled their daughter with kisses while Archie ran up and tackled Jace's leg. "Hey, buddy," he said, while ruffling his son's red curls. Archie took after his mom in looks while Cecie took after him, except their eyes, Cecie had her mom's eyes and Archie had Jace's eyes.

"Mom, you gotta hear what happened to dada today."

"What?" asked Clary.

"A paper cut him," Cecie said, "I threatened to beat it up." She sounded so serious it made Jace want to laugh.

Clary stared at their daughter with a look Jace knew well, it was a look of holding yourself back from squeezing one their children into a hug too tightly. "You're so precious," she said. And hugged her with tears of joy in her eyes.

Jace watched them for a moment with adoration. Archie appeared to be trying to decide if he should tackle them both. Jace picked his son up and then went over to take both his daughter and wife into his arms, three of the most important people in his life. They both laughed and kissed him on his cheeks. His little family.

After dinner they put Cecie and Archie to bed.

"Read this one to me, da," said Cecie.

Archie nodded.

Jace was never able to say no to them. "Alright." He'd lost count of how many times he had read this book to them. It also happened to be the same book Max was obsessed with when he was younger, Jace looked at the book, The Very Small Mouse Who Went a Very Long Way.

Alec couldn't look at the book without remembering the many times he himself had read it to Max. Funnily enough, Alec had regifted it to Jace and Clary when Celery and Artichoke came along, Jace believes this gesture had hidden intentions. Aunt Lily also read it to them, though she also threatened to eat them because they were so cute and sweet, Alec told Jace that Lily didn't actually mean that, and he knew that as well.

After reading it to them twice, they both finally fell asleep. Jace gave them both a gentle goodnight kiss on the head and shut out the lights.

He headed to his and Clary's bedroom. Once you became an adult and a parent sleep was very much welcomed.

Clary was in their bathroom combing out her wild red curls. "Are our little Shadowhunters asleep?"

"Yup," he said, "after reading that book two times through."

"I do believe Alec gifted it to us as a way to secretly torture us."

"I think you're on to something, my love," said Jace.

She gave him that smile that was for only him. "How was your day?" she asked.

"Good. Celery really did threaten to beat up a piece of paper."

Clary laughed. "How did we get so lucky?"

"I don't know. But I know I can't imagine our lives without those two."

"Me either," said Clary.

They both got ready for bed and went to sleep.

Clary was walking toward her desk to get a pen: she was signing official Clave documents for the Clave in exile.

Sadly she still had clumsy moments and even more sadly she was barefoot, she stubbed her toe on the foot of the desk.

"Ow. Damnit!" she said, then covered her mouth as she remembered her two year old was in the room with her.

"You okay mommy?" Her daughter asked.

She looked down at her daughter, her big green eyes were full of concern. "Mommy is fine," she said, "just hurt my toe on the desk."

"Damnit! Stupid desk," said Cecie.

Fuck! She thought. "Sweety, please don't say that."

"Why not?"

"Well, uh, because it's not a good word."

"But you said it," said Cecie, looking confused.

"Yes. And mommy shouldn't have."

"Okay." Cecie shrugged.

"Hey, mom?"

"What?"

"Do you want a candy to help you feel better?"

Clary teared up. "Yes, I'd like that."

"K, I'll get you one."

She dashed out the door, while Clary clucthed her heart and sat on the floor from how much she loved that little baby.

At that moment Jace peered his head through the doorway and instantly his face changed from amusement to concern.

"Clary, are you okay?" he asked, voice anxious.

She waved a hand at him. "I'm fine. Just lost the ability to stand from the love I have for our daughter."

"Ah," he said, "did she threaten to beat something up for you?"

Clary nodded. "I stubbed my toe and she looked like she was going to fight the desk. Where's Archie?"

"He's getting paper and crayons, he immediately ran to get them when we got back. Saying something about how mama needed a drawing," Jace said. "Our Celery is becoming quite the protecter."

"Yes. And caring, she went to get me a piece of candy to make me feel better. And Archie is becoming quite the artist and kind boy."

At that, Jace looked like he too may start crying from the love for their daughter. "She's such a good Celery," he said. "Archie is a good Artichoke as well."

It was funny how Cecie was like the protecter and Archie was healer, the twins were opposites but loved each other to the moon and back.

Jace had nicknamed their daughter Celery and their son Artichoke after they were born. Clary being exhausted and knowing her husband and that there was no use in arguing with him on these nicknames, gave in and grew to love them for Cecie and Archie as well.

Jace had a thing with giving the kids he felt affection for or loved a nickname, and he of course gave much thought to the nicknames for their children, listing the benefits of them. Clary found it sweet, but also realized Jace was definitely secretly a plant and health nerd. He'd grown a lot from when she had first met him, he was more open with his love now, more open with his gentleness. He still had moments where he fought back reacting the way he used to but he had learned to fight them back, she was extremely proud of how far he's come. Then again, she was always proud of him.

Cecie came running back into the room, dodging Jace's reaching hands. "Hang on, dad," she said, "I gotta give momma this first."

She handed Clary the candy, then kissed her on the cheek. She then ran to Jace's still outstretched arms, and hugged him tight.

A moment later Archie came running into the room with paper and crayons.

"My celery," he said. "How was your day?"

"Good," she said. "Mommy got hurt though." She looked back over to Clary, who was on her feet now, and picked Archie up. walking toward two of the loves of her life.

"Mama's fine," Clary said, ruffling her daughters hair with her empty hand. then kissing Jace's cheek. "Now, we do need to get ready for Magnus' dinner party."

"Ah, yes," said Jace. "That's tonight. He'll be very dramatic if we are late."

"Uncle Magnus is awesome," said Cecie.

"Uncle Alec is awesome too," said Archie. Archie was always following his uncle Alec around, watching him closely. Clary wondered if he wanted to be like Alec. Jace of course thought it was the most amazing thing.

"Yes," Jace agreed. "But, uncle Magnus is also dramatic."

"You're one to talk," Clary teased.

They all laughed.

"Let's go! I want to see Max and Rafe," said Cecie. Who loved her cousins so much, and would tackle them with hugs when she saw them. Max and Rafe were extremely protective of her and Archie, as well. They would always be there when they were first learning to walk to pick them up and kiss their heads. They had always been gentle with them. And when they had first been born, Alec and Magnus brought them to see their new cousins and Max looked at them and said "I'm gonna protect them like little siblings." Clary started crying and Jace lost it too, it had been an emotional couple of days then. Magnus watched this with a kind of loving amusement and Alec patted his parabatai's shoulder.

It was odd and the most amazing thing, Clary thought. How they'd gone from a bunch of misfits who were fighting a lot in the beginning to a family who would do anything for each other and loved each fiercely. To all being married and having kids. She wouldn't trade this for anything.

"Is pop pop and gammy going to be there?" asked Cecie.

"No, but they are coming to take you tomorrow for a sleep over, though," said Clary. Cecie and Archie had started calling Luke pop-pop and Jocelyn gammy. Luke held the title with adoration and now has a mug  that says "best pop-pop in Brooklyn" ( gifted to him by Simon. his and Izzy's son also calls Luke pop-pop)

They went to Magnus' dinner party. They laughed and had fun and ate a lot. Magnus as usual threw a magnificent dinner party. This was their big family and it was home.

Natsu frowns as he closes the fridge door. This morning when he went to work, he was so sure that he had left the last one of his precious chocolate mousse in it, hidden behind a bunch of vegetables because he knows how much Gray, one of his four room-mate, is equally fond of them as he is. He has been looking forward to this moment all day long, enduring his classes with the promise that once he’ll get home, everything will be fine again because he could drown himself in the chocolate.

But here he is instead, hands empty and craving for something he can’t have.

“Gray!”

He accepted his defeat, but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t fetch for answers.

He hears the opening of the door and then it closes, and a few seconds later, a dark-haired male stands in front of him, a bored look on his face.

“What now?”

“Are you the one who ate my last and precious chocolate mousse?!” He asks vehemently.

“There was chocolate mousse?” Gray questions instead. “How come I never know when there are some in the house now!”

“Answer me, dumbass.”

“Well, the response I gave you should be enough of an answer right? I didn’t even know there were some in the fridge!”

“I was waiting for this moment all day!” Natsu whines. “If you ate them I’m going to take my revenge and—”

“Natsu for fuck’s sake I was in the class all day, you saw me on the campus and we came home at the same time not even five minutes ago; explain to me at what moment I could have got a chance to eat the damn thing?”

Natsu opens his mouth to retaliate before closing it again, lost at words. Gray has a point, it could not be him.

“Then if not you, who? Is it Rogue?”

“Rogue is allergic to chocolate, Natsu.” Gray rolls his eyes, passing next to him to open the fridge and take a bottle of juice. “We’ve been living together for two years now, one would think you paid more attention to us and—”

“Yeah yeah, then if not him who?” Natsu interrupts Gray, clearly not ready to hear him complain about how shitty of a friend he is.

Gray stops what he is doing to turn and look at Natsu, dumbfounded.

“Natsu, remind me who you are living with again?”

“You, Rogue and Sting,” he says factually.

“Alright. You already know that I didn’t eat your damn mousse and that Rogue didn’t do it either. Now tell me who is left in your pretty little list?”

Natsu narrows his eyes at Gray, crossing his arms on his chest.

“Sting would never do—”

“Think about it again. Your pretty boyfriend was home all morning, alone in the house. Unless we have a ghost living with us, you need to face reality. He betrayed you,” Gray finishes with a smirk on his lips.

Natsu gasps at him, this time his eyes wide in horror.

“No… How could he do this to me.”

The pink-haired boy shakes his head in denial as he makes his way out of the kitchen to go in the bedroom that Sting and he share.

But no matter how he turns the situation in his head, he knows Gray is right.

Sting has, indeed, decided to betray him.

When Sting passes the front door and ends up in the living room, facing a Gray with a smug look on his face, he knows he is in trouble. Rogue is here too, a stupid smile on his normally straight face, looking directly at him from the couch, a hand running through one of their cat's fur. The only person missing is his boyfriend, and that in itself manage to make Sting more nervous.

“What? Why are you looking at me like that?” He asks as he lets his keys on the table.

“I hope you have a very good excuse for what you did,” Gray laughs as he makes his way to sit next to Rogue.

“What do you mean?” Sting enquires with a frown.

“Chocolate mousse.”

It’s all Rogue needs to say before realisation strikes him and his eyes go wide.

“Shit…”

“Shit, indeed,” Gray laughs some more. “I know he is your boyfriend and all, but that doesn’t give you all the rights in the world.”

“In my defence, I was craving something sweet and it was the only thing left in the house, and I actually planned to come home early with a new set of it but I got stuck with a project and my teacher wouldn’t let me go...damn how mad is he?”

Rogue shakes his head, amused as Gray simply continue to laugh at him.

“Well, I’m pretty sure he went through the denial phase already. I heard him cursing earlier so I guess he went through some anger. But it’s been calm for a few minutes now so... my guess is, he’s sulking like the baby he really is.”

Sting sighs, closing his eyes for a moment.

“Well… I dug my own grave. It was nice knowing you guys.”

The blond decides to muster the courage and slowly makes his way towards their bedroom.

“Don’t be dramatic, you’ll be fine, idiot.”

It’s the last thing he hears Rogue saying before he lets himself go into the room.

The first thing he sees is obviously Natsu. He is sitting on the bed, back against the headboard. There are a few papers and book sprawled around him, he seems unaware of Sting’s presence for now, which gives the blond some times to just admire the man he loves before hell rises.

Sting always found it endearing the way Natsu tends to focus on his works, no matter how much he likes to guff around, he always treats his studies seriously and always comes home with good grades.

Sting is proud of him, especially since he knows how much Natsu struggles to keep his attention on something sometimes.

Shaking his head fondly, he decides to drop his bag somewhere near their door before he makes his way toward the bed. The movements manage to grab Natsu’s attention, and for a split second, there’s the beginning of a smile on his face, before it’s replaced with a cold stare and a pout. Sting fights back a smile as he sits next to his boyfriend, who only grabs his stuff so they are closer to him, while he moves a few centimetres back, so there is more space between them.

“Hey,” Sting greets him.

“I’m mad at you,” comes the immediate answers. There’s no heat behind the words though.

“I know. And I’m sorry.”

Natsu looks at him without saying anything for a moment, before he goes back to his work, ignoring Sting. He can see Natsu is trying hard not to give in, by the frown on his forehead.

“Baby... I’m really sorry. I was craving something sweet and I swear I wanted to bring more after classes but I got more things to do and completely forgot. I promise I’ll buy some more tomorrow.”

There’s no reaction from his boyfriend and he waits a few minutes before he takes the pen out of Natsu’s hand, and scoots the books and paper away from them. He can see that Natsu is ready to protest but he cuts him short by taking place on the boy’s laps.

“Now you can’t ignore me like that.”

Sting smiles gently at him, and Natsu huffs, turning his head on the side, his mouth in a pout.

“Come on baby, you can’t really be mad at me for it, I promised to buy more and I already said I was sorry.”

“Pff. As if it’s enough.”

Sting rolls his eyes and this time he brings his hands to Natsu’s face and turns him toward him. He doesn’t let the boy time to complain and simply presses his lips against his. He feels Natsu going limp against him, as if he was waiting for this moment to happen and Sting can’t help the grin that appears on his lips now.

After a few seconds, he parts away, keeping his hands on Natsu’s cheeks, caressing softly his cheekbones.

“This is unfair. I was ready to stay mad at you for at least a week!”

“A week? As if you could have resisted me for that long.”

Natsu only sticks out his tongue at him which only makes him laugh.

“You’re too cute baby.”

“I’m not cute. And I’m not a baby.”

Sting gives him an unimpressed look before placing another kiss on his lips.

“Sure. Whatever makes you sleep at night.”

“What are you doing?” 

Gabe doesn’t jump, thank you very much; he just wasn’t expecting EJ to come into his classroom without knocking. Which was probably his first mistake. 

“Nothing.” 

“Do you just stand around staring into mirrors when the kids aren’t here?” EJ asks, perching on Gabe’s desk. 

“No,” Gabe retorts. He steps back from the mirror after one more shake of his head, then turns to glare at EJ properly. “I was just checking that I didn’t have any paint on me.” 

“Uh-huh.” EJ raises his eyebrows. “It’s last period. No one’s here to see you after this.” 

“No one,” Gabe agrees, glancing at the clock over EJ’s shoulder. Five minutes to the end of the kids’ arts period. Ten minutes to the end of school. 

“And if you were really worried, you’d have checked at the beginning of your free period,” EJ goes on, thoughtfully. 

“Get to your point,” Gabe snaps. Four minutes. He needs EJ out by then. 

EJ follows his look over his shoulder at the clock, then grins and pulls out his phone. “What are you doing?” Gabe demands. He doesn’t trust EJ even a little. 

“Checking NHL schedules,” EJ says. He’s not actually pressing any buttons on his phone. “Avs are home and don’t have a game, do they?” 

“Maybe. I don’t know.” 

“And it’s a Wednesday,” EJ goes on, still doing that stupid smirk. “Which means…” 

“It means nothing.” 

“And has nothing to do with a certain defenseman whose daughter is in your class?” 

“Cecy’s a great kid,” Gabe says, trying for calm. Three minutes. At least when the kids come back, EJ will have to leave. Or shut up. 

“With a father who you think is–” 

“He’s a good player,” Gabe interrupts, before EJ can go into exactly what Gabe has said about Tyson Barrie when he’s drunk and an Avs game happens to come on. So maybe he plays pretty hockey and is cute and solid in a way that makes Gabe want to mess up and is even cuter and snarkier and funnier in person and always picks up his daughter from school when he’s home and doesn’t have a game and is, Gabe found out after some guilty googling, single. That has nothing to do with Gabe making sure he looks good. “And a good dad.” 

“And that’s why you’re preening.” 

“I’m not preening.” 

“You’ve got a hair out of place.” 

“I don’t!” But Gabe glances at the mirror again, and ignores EJ’s laughter. So he wants to look good. That’s not a crime. 

“Don’t worry,” EJ says, somehow still intelligible through his laughter. “You’re still very pretty.” 

“Excuse me, I am the prettiest,” Gabe informs him. One minute. “And it has nothing to do with Tyson Barrie.” He pauses. “He’s not behind me or anything, is he?” 

“No, unfortunately,” EJ shakes his head. “But you know, the school year’s almost over.” 

“Yeah, I noticed.” 

“And that means his daughter won’t be in your class anymore.” 

“That is how school years work, yeah.” 

“So are you going to ask him out, then?” 

Gabe snorts. “Yeah, sure, I’ll just ask out the NHL player. Who has a daughter. With a woman.” 

“Have you heard his interviews? That man is not straight.” 

“EJ.”

“Fine, I’m not speculating or anything.” EJ holds up his hands. “Just saying. You’ll have nothing to lose.” 

“Cecy’s still in my class, I can’t think about that now,” Gabe informs him. There are things EJ doesn’t need to know. Like all his silly daydreams about the dates he’d take Tyson out on. But he’s right, too. As long as his daughter’s in his class, Gabe shouldn’t be thinking about that. And yeah, his interviews are–well, Gabe might daydream about what they mean–but Tyson’s never been connected with a man in his career, and Gabe’s not going to define him. 

EJ snorts. “You definitely aren’t thinking about anything, for sure.” 

“I–” The bell rings, and Gabe straightens, checks his hair one last time. “You’ve got to go.” 

“But I want to watch! I–”

“Out,” Gabe orders, and EJ sighs and goes. He pauses at the door. 

“Three months,” he points out. 

“Out!” Gabe repeats, and EJ goes as the kids stream back in and back to their desks, gathering up their stuff, and then it’s the usual chaos of getting the bus line sorted out as the kids whose parents pick them up wait. Getting everyone sorted actually does distract Gabe, until he straightens up from making sure Matt’s shoes are properly tied and there he is, helping his daughter put her jacket on. 

Really, it’s Gabe’s job to check in with the parents. That’s why he goes over to them. “Hi,” he says, and Tyson jumps and makes a noise that is clearly biting down on a swearword. 

“Oh, f–hi!” he says, with a guilty look at his daughter, who Gabe is certain has heard worse. “You’re here. Mr. Landeskog. Hi.” 

“You said that already,” Cecy points out. She’s a cute kid, with Tyson’s smile and curls and her mother’s eyes and build and snark that could have come from either of them, probably. 

“Yes, thank you, Ceec.” Tyson ruffles her hair. His cheeks are a little red. “Let’s definitely talk about how much of a mess daddy is, that sounds great.” 

“I’ve seen worse,” Gabe puts in. 

“Yeah, but maybe I’d like not to be in the bottom half of the messes you’ve seen,” Tyson tells him with a wry smile. “Just so I have some dignity left to keep me warm at night.” 

Gabe bites his lip on the offer to keep him warm at night. 

“Anyway,” Tyson goes on. “So. How’s Cecy been? Making trouble?” 

“No!” Cecy protest. “I was good. Right, Mr. Landeskog? I’ve been good?”

“Eh…” Gabe wiggles his hand, and she gives the most betrayed look Gabe’s ever seen. 

“No! That’s not true.” 

Tyson tilts his head at Gabe. “Hm. I don’t know…” 

“Daddy,” she whines, and Tyson laughs. 

“Yeah, of course. I guess I trust you more than Mr. Landeskog.” 

“I’m hurt,” Gabe tells him, and Tyson grins. 

“Well, if she’s been good, we can get ice cream.” 

“I see. So it’s an ulterior motive?” 

“Always. Because ice cream is…” he looks at Cecy expectantly, and she recites, 

“Definitely one hundred percent in daddy’s diet plan.” 

“That’s right.” He holds up his hand, and Cecy smacks it in a high five. “Okay, you good to go?” 

“Yeah–Cara!” Cecy yells, and then darts away to her friend, who’s talking to her mom. Tyson laughs, shakes his head. 

“Good thing I’m not in a hurry.” 

“Yeah.” Gabe nods. “That was a good game last night.” 

“You watched?” Tyson’s eyes go wide, then he keeps going. “I mean, of course you watched, you’ve said you’re a hockey fan before, but it could have been the SHL or something else in Europe, and even in Denver a lot of people keep to the hometown teams, and–” 

“I watched,” Gabe interrupts. “That was a nice goal in the second.” 

“Oh, thanks.”

“And a good post-game interview,” Gabe goes on, and Tyson groans and glares. “You watched that? Come on, that’s not fair.” 

“How many years of interviews have you given?” 

“Don’t you know you’re not supposed to ask a boy his age,” Tyson retorts, then adds. “And here I thought maybe I had some dignity left.” 

“Dignity’s overrated.” 

“Easy for you to say, you look like a Disney prince had a baby with a Norse god even after a day of dealing with third graders.” Gabe refuses to have a reaction over that. Or at least, not until he has some privacy. “Some of us don’t have that luxury.” 

“You seem to get by all right,” Gabe points out. 

“Yeah, it’s amazing what an NHL salary will do,” Gabe bites down on the definitely inappropriate things he could say about how little an NHL salary would matter to the right person. “Yeah, that was a revelation,” Tyson agrees. “First time I saw a teacher in the grocery store I ran and hid behind a pyramid of chicken soup, and then i knocked it over and almost got a concussion.” Gabe can’t help bursting out laughing. Tyson shakes his head, looking rueful but also amused. Of course he’s charmingly self-deprecating. “Now I get that feeling with coaches.” 

“They can’t be that much older than you.” 

“Are you calling me old, Mr. Landeskog?” Tyson retorts, stressing the ‘mister.’ “Because I’ve got an entire hockey locker room who can vouch for the fact that I’ve never grown up.”

“Well, I’ve seen Cecy’s registration forms, Mr. Barrie,” Gabe replies, smirking. 

Tyson makes a face. “Ugh. Please no Mr. Barrie.” 

“Is that your dad?” 

“No, that’s the front office whenever they’re pissed at me. Or my agent, which is worse. I mean, the front office can fire me, but my agent can really fuck me over.” 

“You’ve played in the same town for most of your career.” 

Tyson’s eyebrows go up. “Which you know?” he asks. “Are you a fan, Mr. Landeskog?” 

“I told you I watched your game,” Gabe tells him, willing down the blush he knows is coming. 

“Yeah, but there are fans and there are fans. I knew you were a fan, but that’s different from being a fan and knowing player histories. Especially mine, I mean. There are people who know Nate’s name, and then there are people who know my name, eh?” Tyson grins. “So are you a fan?” 

Gabe glances around, but Tyson grinning at him and fuck it, there are only a few months left of school. He can do this much. “Maybe I’m just a fan of yours.” 

Tyson’s face goes red, and his mouth does something that doesn’t make noise but does make Gabe have to concentrate not to look at his lips. “Well, then you’re one of the only ones,” he finally comes to the conclusion. “But I’m glad to have one, at least. And one like you.” 

“Like me?” 

“You know, a fu–freaking–prince.” Tyson glances up at him, and Gabe is definitely not imagining that look. He wasn’t going to speculate about interviews, but he knows what it looks like when he’s being checked out. “Could do worse, I guess.” 

“I’m flattered,” Gabe retorts, and opens his mouth to say more, but then–

“Dad!” Tyson’s hit with four feet of eight year old. “Can we get ice cream now? Can Cara come?” 

Tyson’s focus immediately shifts, but his ears are still red. “Did Cara’s mom say she could?” he asks. 

“Yes!” Cecy insists, stomping her foot. “Da-ad, let’s go!” 

“Duty calls,” Gabe tells him, and Tyson looks at him, sidelong. 

“Yeah,” he says. “I guess it does. It was nice talking to you, Mr. Landeskog. I mean, it always is, but it was especially nice today. Not for any particular reason. Just because–”

“Dad!” 

“Yeah, right.” Tyson runs a hand through his hair. “See you later.” 

“Yeah,” Gabe agrees, and watches as they go, Tyson’s hand slipping easily into his daughter’s. 

He waits until they’re out of the room before he fist pumps, because he has that much dignity at least.

“Oh, shit.” Tyson nearly drops his bottle of water, juggles it a little, but manages to catch it. “Oh, shit,” he repeats. 

“It’s okay, I know you’re not smooth,” Gabe manages not to laugh as he slides into place next to Tyson and the big blonde guy next to him who is definitely Nate Mackinnon. 

Tyson makes a face at him. “I’m a professional athlete, I’m usually at least coordinated.” 

“Didn’t you break your leg off the rink at Worlds a few years ago?”

“Yes, and no one knows why–no one,” Tyson stresses, stabbing a finger at his friend, who’s laughing behind his hand. “No one, Nate, shut up.” 

“Shutting up.” Nate holds up his hands, then looks at Gabe, definitely sizing him up. Gabe lets him, meets his eyes squarely. “So you’re the famous Mr. Landeskog?” 

“Nate!” Tyson groans, elbowing him. Gabe can’t help but grin. He was pretty sure he wasn’t reading this wrong, but this sort of confirmation is always good. 

“I think we can say Gabriel, now that the school year’s over.” Gabe holds out a hand. 

Nate takes it. “Nate Mackinnon.” His handshake isn’t hard, but it’s strong in a way that makes it clear this is a man who works with his body for a living. “I’m glad to finally meet you.” 

“And now he’s going to go find Cecy, and distract her for a few minutes” Tyson announces, shoving at Nate. “And not be here. Good bye.” 

“But Brutes–” 

“Not here,” Tyson repeats. It’s unclear the shoving is actually doing anything, given the good six inches Nate has on him, but Nate goes regardless, with a jaunty wave to Gabe. “Anyway. Sorry about him. He’s here because Cecy loves him but I meant to keep him away from you before he embarrassed me. I don’t need help with that.” 

Then he’s just smiling at Gabe, an eyebrow raised like it’s half a challenge, and Gabe considers beating around the bush, doing more of their half-flirting they’ve been doing for months, but it’s been months. “So, as of today, I’m no longer Cecy’s teacher.” 

“I thought teachers were supposed to be observant,” Tyson retorts, and when Gabe snorts, Tyson shrugs. “I don’t have to be nice to you to make sure my daughter gets a good grade. You can get the full Tyson Barrie experience now.” 

Gabe takes half a step closer. “I’d like that,” he says, making sure to pitch his voice low. He can see Tyson’s adam’s apple moves as he swallows. “Maybe over drinks?” 

Tyson swallows again, and his eyes dart around, to all the parents milling about the yard. “You know, there are things I can’t–I won’t be able to do, until I retire,” he says slowly. His eyes are fixed on Gabe, wary now. Serious. Gabe wonders if this is what he looks like on the ice; what he’d look like in bed. “It’s shitty, but that’s how it is.” 

“Yeah, I know, I get it.” Gabe takes the second half of that step closer. He’s thought about that. Thought about that, and thought about Tyson’s smile and how he is with Cecy and his arms and his humor. “I’d still like those drinks.” 

“Really?” Tyson bites at his lip. “Because I’d get it if you didn’t, being a secret can suck–” 

“Well, let’s be real, you’re getting old anyway,” Gabe says, and Tyson bursts out into a laugh even as he reaches out to the nearest flat surface to knock. “And, whatever. Let’s see how much the NHL can speculate about a bromance.” 

“Oh it’s a lot,” Tyson says, but he’s still laughing. “But, then. Drinks sound good.” 

“Great.” Gabe knows he’s smiling like a lunatic–if only because EJ is giving him ridiculous thumbs up from the doorway where he is talking to, of all people, Nate Mackinnon, which Gabe thinks would make him nervous if he wasn’t so happy. “Tonight?” 

Tyson’s eyebrows go up. “I’ve got Cecy tonight. Tomorrow?” 

“That’ll do,” Gabe allows. “I can text you the details?” He holds out his phone for Tyson’s number. Tyson enters it, and his fingers deliberately brush Gabe’s palm as he hands it back. 

Then he pauses. Gives a smile that’s halfway to a smirk. “You know, I can also sign an autograph, while we’re there. Maybe bring a jersey to sign. If you’re such a fan.” 

“I could be into that,” Gabe retorts, mock-thoughtful, and Tyson goes red but looks considering. Oh, Gabe thinks. This is going to be good.

Atelier Totori Plus Opinions

Those who paid attention to my rankings are already aware that, at the end of the day, this is my least-favorite Atelier game in the series.  Which is something that really bothers me, because there are a lot of great elements to this game. The game has a strong alchemy and combat system, and introduces a serious storyline that spans the whole game (sort of).  Totori herself also winds up being my favorite of the Arland alchemists, and characters as a whole are fairly strong, barring a few exceptions.  There are just a lot of things that, I feel, hold it back. The game is still fantastic, and even the lowest-ranked Atelier game is more enjoyable to me than most other games out there, but, well, someone had to be at the bottom of a list.  And unfortunately, that's Totori.

CHARACTERS As a whole, characters are fairly solid, with a few that stand out as among my least-favorites in the entire series.  Those who are good are fantastic, and those who are bad are intolerable.  Thankfully, the good outweighs the bad.

Totori - Totori is adorable.  She's the most serious of the Arland alchemists, and shows a level of competence that we didn't get too often with Rorona, who was portrayed in a more joking fashion despite her talents.  Yes, a lot of characters talk down to her about her abilities, but I think what she accomplishes ultimately shines past Gino being an insufferable little shit all the time.  Totori is incredibly precious and enjoyable, and is a great mix of serious and studious with goofy and somewhat awkward.  I love her to pieces.

Gino - We begin with the bad. Gino is insufferable.  He's just obnoxious.  He is hyper to a fault, and is direct to a very dire fault.  Instead of a fairly endearing portrayal, they went for the option where he has zero social skills, is constantly a rude little shit, and does nothing of value but be a putz and whine about when Totori starts out-performing him.  His entire character story is him being a butthurt baby over Totori being stronger than him now.  Gino is awful.

Melvia - but he was not the worst.  Melvia gets that spot.  She would be generally fine.  She's portrayed as the strongest of the group, and is very direct in her interactions with others.  However, she loses massive points for the same reason that, say, Nozomi from Love Live loses points: the groping other people gag.  I think it only happens with Rorona when you have them explore together, but trust me, once is enough.  In fact, most of her initial interactions with characters when you go exploring are unpleasant.  Melvia is basically just a sexual deviant, and quite frankly, that's an automatic failure in my book.

Mimi - The best girl of this game.  Mimi is basically Cordelia 2.0, but with a bit more of a history.  Mimi's mother died of illness, and she's very focused on making her family name famous.  She's abrasive toward Totori, while at the same time being very clearly attached to her.  It's really cute, to the point it’s honestly one of the few ships I have attachment to at all.  Mimi tries her best, but has the same issues as Cordelia of being unable to honestly express her feelings toward others.  Unless that feeling is anger.  Then she's fine.  Like I said with Cordelia, struggling with their own emotions is a character trait I adore in all its facets, so surprise that I like Mimi best.

Marc - Marc is hysterical.  He's all about robotics, and is a man of science.  Of course, that comes with not always understanding the intricacies of social etiquette (”What, you didn’t know I was joking about using a live cat’s skin to cover the cat robot?”).  He just winds up being funny and engaging, and I generally appreciate his presence.

Rorona - Rorona returns, and she's fantastic.  Seeing Rorona in a teaching role really is something else.  She's still her air-headed self.  Very competent and skilled, but cannot teach for the life of her.  But, she's trying her best, and really wants to be a good teacher. It's sweet to see her interactions with Totori, literally the only one who understands her inane directions.

Cordelia - YEAH, CORDELIA!  Cordelia returns, as head of the adventurer's guild.  She's just as forceful as always, but has calmed down a bit since Rorona. She's more in control of her anger, and seems a bit more honest with herself, which is great.  I love to see that kind of development.

Iksel - Iksel came back!  I'm sure all five of his fans are very happy.

Sterk - The final returning character, and possibly the most involved?   Arland is a republic now, and thus Sterk has lost his standing as a knight.  Sterk is less than thrilled about it, and continues to insist he is a knight and acts accordingly, while hunting down Gio to establish the old monarchy once again.  Sterk's character is one burdened by regrets and the loss of his only perceived calling in life, and this really shines with his interactions with Gino.  While Gino winds up being obnoxious because he's just sad Totori beat him, Sterk presents as someone who is understanding of his position, having lost to Rorona and felt the blow to his pride as a knight who is weaker than the one he's protecting, but also forceful in how to overcome it.  It's a good balance, I feel.

Ceci - Totori's sister can be precious, though she doesn't have a lot of presence, I feel, until you start getting into her own history as an adventurer and why she stepped down. She's good, just not super interesting to me.

Guid - Can I just remark how much his recurring gag of being invisible irks me?   Because it does.  Still, he's alright.  Like Ceci, nothing interesting about him until he starts building the ship and re-kindles that passion he once had.

Gerhard - or whatever his name was.  Bartender man.  He’s okay.

Pamela - the ghost girl returns, but alive this time?  Or something?  We’re not too sure.  She sure continues to be a great source of entertainment though.

Peter - So my housemate Pat has this really hilarious nerd voice he does for characters like Peter, and I wish I could project it through text, but instead, here’s a link to Peter’s actual english voice.  They’re almost the same tone anyway.  Peter’s a nerd loser, and thankfully the game treats him as such.

Tiffani - She’s back.  Same issue as before.  I really don’t care for the drunk Tiffani trophies...

Hagel - Hagel has been promoted to the best shopkeeper of all time for commenting that if Totori is feeling embarrassed about the clothes she wears that she should maybe put on a pair of tights.  While part of me is definitely just happy that someone suggested a more conservative look (which I always appreciate), the specific suggestion for tights is an immediate bonus.  Hagel knows what’s good.

Filly - Esty’s younger sister.  She’s an oddball.  Nothing against her at all, but she doesn’t really stand out beyond the super relatable characteristic of hating her job.

STORY Totori has a real story!  Totori's mother was an adventurer who once went exploring across the ocean, and never returned.  Totori is sure that her mother is alive out there somewhere, and is determined to become an adventurer to search for her mother.  The people in her home village of Alanya are worried, but ultimately Totori persists and becomes an adventurer and begins her search.  It's easy to get sidetracked from this, but after three years and renewing your license, the search begins in earnest as you construct a ship and start to re-trace your mother's footsteps, straight into a village designed to be sacrificed to a demon within the tower nearby.  Your goal then is to fulfill the mission your mother could not and defeat the demon within.  Your path winds up encompassing both your quest to become a proper adventurer, but also to succeed your mother.  It's honestly a really strong element to the game.  I’ve said this before, but it bears repeating: you don’t need a super complex plot to be a successful one, and Totori is a good example of that. 

SETTING It's still Arland, only expanded to include Alanya as well.  Both locations do feel highly distinct, with Arland being a clear city compared to the small town of Alanya.  What really makes this world feel open is that you stop at several points along the way, and it has a much more significant feel of adventure.  When the ocean opens up, it really feels like there's a ton of extra metaphorical ground to cover, and seeing only a piece of the other continent opens up the potential for the Totori and Mimi Adventures ending, where they seek to travel beyond the areas already known.  The only drawback is that there still isn't much that's been dug into.  Arland is a republic now.  Nothing has changed.   Gio commented that it wouldn't, but it's still obnoxious to see how literally nothing about this dramatic shift in government structure had an impact on the region.  It's just those kinds of things that could be explored to some degree that would make for interesting story points that just...are never addressed.

SYNTHESIS SYSTEM Unlike Rorona Plus, Totori Plus has a very simple synthesis system, in that there's no combining of traits.  This allows for the perfect traits to show up way earlier than usual, and require little to no chaining of items to obtain what is needed.  In a way, this is kinda nice.  It simplifies the system considerably, and removes unneeded anxiety around getting just the right skills.  On the other, it takes away some of the engagement of trying to find the optimal assortment, and chaining items to achieve a goal.  The Cost system returns, but with no traits to increase cost, so it's all just a matter of having the better ingredients, which is how they get you to chain traits to other items.   It's not bad, necessarily, but it does feel much more simplified and bare-bones than the other games.

BATTLE SYSTEM Totori is like an inverse Rorona.  Equipment matters, but nowhere near as much as items.  In early-game, you are going to use items constantly, because they are hyper-vital.  In late-game, equipment and skills can account for a lot, but ultimately your items are going to determine what's best. A good N/A and Himmelstern combined with a good Dimension Egg is how you beat virtually every major boss, with everything outside of Orthogalaxen going down to this combo without even getting a turn.   When you use Rorona to double up on the fun, basically nothing in the game stands a chance.  This is an element I adore. I really feel like it's appropriate for the items you craft to be the thing that leads to victory.  It just feels right, you know?

OTHER MECHANICS Unfortunately, wholesale will not retain the best traits, which means you cannot register your ultimate bombs and buy them back infinitely.  Instead, you need the Chims!  Rorona creates her own versions of Hom called Chims, and you can get up to five if you find the Water of Lifes. Waters of Life? The Chim-Maker items. Each Chim can then duplicate ingredients or items you have in your inventory. Unlike Hom, Chims are best used to duplicate synthesized items, as they make exact copies without having to use ingredients.  As a result, you can make a few good N/A, and have Chims copy them to maintain your stock.  The only downside is that they're fairly slow.  It can take a tremendous amount of time to copy the good bombs and Elixers, which means your stock is never too high.   So resources need to be used conservatively and only as needed.  Which isn't too tough, considering how quickly you run train on the post-game superbosses with the right trait setup.

There's also the license points.  License points are used...primarily just to increase rank.  Rank increases will open up new areas and new explicit tasks to complete.  Sometimes, this involves making stronger boss enemies appear in previous locations, and other times it's opening up new large areas. It's basically how you determine where you can and cannot go, one step at a time, without opening up the entire map at once.  I really don't know how I feel about it.  It's a little...arbitrary?  But I can't complain.  I do think Meruru had the more interesting way to open up a world map, though.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS I mentioned in Rorona that the Arland trilogy is the trilogy with a few more uncomfortable fan-service moments than I would like.  None are as bad as Totori.  Comments on "sex appeal" are more frequent than I'd like (read: above 0), Melvia is the way she is in most interactions with new female characters, the swimsuit contest is a thing that happens, and oh god the Guardian hunt...  The raw number of times this game made me wish it would stop is unfortunate.

There's also a bigger issue in the events.   Like Rorona, character events occur when they reach certain friendship levels.  Unlike Rorona, Totori has two central areas, and events are exclusive to each location.  Often without any indication that they're happening, and frequently with time-specific activation periods.  So you can miss entire events just by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The conditions are also super obtuse. At one point in my playthrough, I tried setting up for the Spring Cup trick, only to realize I didn't have the recipe for the Spring Cup.  Rorona was supposed to give it to me, but hadn't.  Why?  Because I had to synthesize a specific item in the OTHER atelier, to activate a scene with Ceci, before Rorona's scenes would miraculously start occurring.   Then there's the time I completely lost access to Pamela's shop for the rest of the game because I went to one place first before going to her shop, and the scenes played out of order and locked me out of her return.  It's that level of obtuse nonsense that drove me up a wall while playing, and it's honestly this piece that causes it to rank at the bottom.  I can tolerate a lot.  But I cannot tolerate being constantly frustrated by not knowing where or when things will happen. Just a simple indication through an exclamation point over the town things are happening in would ease problems a lot.

There's also no development items, which I guess is fine, but I love those things and think it's nonsense that they didn't add them in the Plus version.  At least let me travel faster on the map, you butts!

CONCLUDING THOUGHTS Atelier Totori Plus is still a fun game, but it is, bar none, the most obtuse and frustrating of the games.  There are pieces that I enjoy tremendously, but there are also pieces that are just incredibly irritating to experience.  I still love the game, and I'm at a point where I think I've figured out the obtuse portions of the game and how to get events to activate.  But wow, it's such a frustrating learning curve at times.  Definitely worth playing, but also definitely worthy of the least-favorite spot in the series.
