Just as I love picture books that are nothing more than sheer, silly entertainment, I also have a weakness for those that, within an age-appropriate framework, challenge expectations and introduce unexpected new concepts, recognizing the neuroplasticity of the young brain and the incredible ability toddlers and preschoolers have to absorb new ideas. One of the very first books I reviewed here was "Stack the Cats" by the wonderful author-illustrator Susie Ghahremani, and her follow-up, "Balance the Birds" (2018) is just as fantastic! Described as "a book of weight, size, and logic," it introduces the idea of relative size through the cleverness of birds balancing on branches, in bold colours that are a delight to look at.
