I’m going to school to be an ece teacher, and here’s how I’ll nurture my students

- Goodbye rituals based on children’s needs and boundaries:

-Good morning rituals that only slightly vary to produce a healthy routine (helps with home sickness and starting the day properly) 

- Guidance over discipline, positive experiences over negative ones. Communication will be key

- Classroom pet that can be observed and taken care of (within the child’s abilities) such as an axolotl or hermit crab. Animal will be properly taken care of and reside in my home during breaks and weekends

- Sensory cooldown spaces for sensory overloads:

Just as I love picture books that are nothing more than sheer, silly entertainment, I also have a weakness for those that, within an age-appropriate framework, challenge expectations and introduce unexpected new concepts, recognizing the neuroplasticity of the young brain and the incredible ability toddlers and preschoolers have to absorb new ideas. One of the very first books I reviewed here was "Stack the Cats" by the wonderful author-illustrator Susie Ghahremani, and her follow-up, "Balance the Birds" (2018) is just as fantastic! Described as "a book of weight, size, and logic," it introduces the idea of relative size through the cleverness of birds balancing on branches, in bold colours that are a delight to look at. There's nothing more fun than discovering that a book is more than it seems! So I was thrilled when I realised that Ekaterina Elkina's "Animal World" (2019), a box of mini board/block books that initially seemed like the sort of run-of-the-mill product that I usually avoid like the plague, was actually AWESOME! A set of nine sturdy little board books of the sort that are perfect for introducing babies to the joys of clutching their very own book in a chubby little fist, these cover animal themes from "Life in the Pond" to "Pets" with simple colourful illustrations and a new animal word on each page. But beyond that, the books can be stacked like blocks, sorted into their box (with magnetic closure) as a matching game with the cover images, AND the back covers make up a simple puzzle to match the illustration on the inside cover of the box!
