It is best to accept that missing your baby’s milestones is probably going to happen. Even if you are a stay-at-home mom who rarely leaves her baby it can happen. My daughter is suddenly a toddler and I desperately miss the baby days -- those tiring days and sleepless nights. Her gurgles have been replaced by screeches and temper tantrums. I wouldn't trade anything for who her is today or try to hold her back in her development, but I'm sad that her cuddly baby days are already over. Expecting a second child with cleft palate| Family finds hope with Shriners Hospitals team

Michael and April H. are excited to be expecting their second child this December. Initially they kept the news of their growing family quiet. The couple had already endured multiple miscarriages after the birth of their older daughter. Once the period of initial worry about keeping the pregnancy passed, the family was happy to share the news of the child they’ve already nicknamed “Baby Miracle.”

But their journey took another unexpected turn. The family got a shock when an ultrasound indicated that Baby Miracle would likely be born with a cleft lip and palate. After processing the news, April made a phone call to Marisa Foss, nurse practitioner at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago.  “When I called to say we were having a son with a cleft palate and the first ultrasound also indicated a potential heart defect, Marisa spent 45 minutes on the phone with me, calming my nerves, and answering my questions about what to expect,” April said. “It melts my heart and makes me cry to think of it.”

The mom and clinician already had a close relationship. The family’s first daughter, Terilyn, had been born with a cleft lip and palate. Having another child who has a cleft only occurs to 2-5% of the time, according to the American Cleft Palate Craniofacial Association. “A part of what we do is provide support for patient families and we’re happy to do it,” Foss said. “We’re here for families even when they are not physically in our building. Whether that’s an issue with school or a question a parent has.”

The parents had selected the care team at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago even before birth after learning about Terilyn’s condition through ultrasound. “It is not uncommon for a parent who has just received a diagnosis to call us. We arrange a visit to meet with members of our care team. Because information is powerful for parents,” Foss said.

In the years since, pediatric plastic surgeon David Morris, M.D. has performed surgical repairs of Terilyn’s lip and palate. Ear, nose and throat physician Arthur Curtis, M.D. inserted ear tubes, a common treatment for children born with a cleft palate.  “We’ve literally worked with everyone on the cleft team at Shriners Hospital. Every year we see all the specialists,” April said. Terilyn’s speech continues to be evaluated in an annual visit to the hospital, in coordination with private speech therapy in her hometown.

The care and experience has been excellent. “We have a very confident little girl. The team at Shriners gave us great advice. They encouraged us to try and do things for ourselves after Terilyn was born. For instance, we worked to feed her, even with her cleft lip, instead of letting the nurses do it. We also have let everyone in her life know she may always have a special scar.”

To help classmates in her pre-K program understand Terilyn’s special smile, her “trademark” as they call it, the family put together a photo book about her cleft lip repair surgery and her treatment at Shriners Hospitals. The teacher said it was helpful to have Terilyn present the book and explained her condition to her classmates.

Although they never expected to be preparing for a second medical journey with the team at the Chicago Shriners Hospital the family is filled with hope and expectation of a great result for their unborn child. And they look forward to sharing the process with Terilyn this time around. “We have a strong faith. God is blessing us with exactly what he wants too…putting another child into our lives with a cleft. Terilyn is going to see what she went through, when she was too young to know what she went through. She will be able to support her little brother in his own journey.”

As April and Michael think about what’s ahead, they are grateful for the preparation and hope they’ve received from the care team at Shriners Hospitals. “I know from my experience with Terilyn there will be times I sit here and cry my eyes out. But for us, Shriners Hospital has helped us be prepared with how to handle what’s ahead. We both come from a very supportive family background and have helpful friends.”
